Wikipedia co-founder: I no longer trust the website I created

[The] battle of ideas on Wikipedia’s platform formed a crucial part of the encyclopaedia’s commitment to neutrality, which according to [Larry] Sanger, was abandoned after 2009. In the years since, on issues ranging from Covid to Joe Biden, it has become increasingly partisan, primarily espousing an establishment viewpoint that increasingly represents "propaganda". This, says Sanger, is why he left the site in 2007, describing it as “broken beyond repair”.

Everything comes to an end.

r1, Reality, itself, has not come to an end, despite the propaganda.

That video desperately needs more Freddie (preferably shirtless).

Media Matters, the SPLC the ADL as well as the Open Society Foundation all have employees who do nothing all day but edit wikipedia entries. In other countries there are similar organizations doing the same thing in other languages.

Not just on present day people, but on historical people and events.

This is one reason revisionist history is now taking such a hold, despite the obvious ahistoricism often on display and lack of factual basis for the "new history" claims.

Perfect example, r6.

And once all these seniors are dead from CV19, there will be no history. Any of us who reference the past will be told we're experiencing The Mandela Effect or something.

I remember during the very early years of wikipedia, one European court ( in German?) banned wikipedia in the court room, it doesn't matter it's all hearsey!

by Anonymousreply 9September 4, 2021 5:32 AM

Was he the one fucking some wingnut twat and helping her "adjust" her wikipedia page to cover up her crimes? I know people will think I'm crazy, but seriously, there was some shit like that. Anyone else remember that?

Certain important topics have become the monopoly of a narrow but highly committed group of people. Israel and Indian politics, for example, are dominated by right-wing nationalists from those countries. They will revert any edit they dislike, and they will abuse Wikipedia's kilometric list of rules to make their reversal look objective and dispassionate. Reading and editing Wikipedia can be incredibly exhausting and infuriating depending on the subject you look at.

Freddie Sayers is so hot -- I wonder if he's gay? He used to work for Yougov, and pollsters are not rarely gay.

I didn't watch this one yet Freddie usually does a good job - I've watched a number of his interviews.

I learned years ago that the pit bull articles are done by a pit bull advocate. The advocacy bias is obvious on any number of topics.

Editing wikipedia was fun in the early naughts. But it became more and more exhausting. Some topics are riddled with errors and propaganda, it became more maggots than meat.

So I was interested to read

[Quote] Media Matters, the SPLC the ADL as well as the Open Society Foundation all have employees who do nothing all day but edit wikipedia entries.

And not surprised that

[Quote] Israel and Indian politics, for example, are dominated by right-wing nationalists from those countries. They will revert any edit they dislike, and they will abuse Wikipedia's kilometric list of rules to make their reversal look objective and dispassionate.

Yes, I gave up editing.

He's been described as a pollster before, r13. In any case, "literature major" hardly screams macho to me. Also, looking at his personal Facebook page, which is half set private, he's a Hillary Clinton fan. An English dude who was #WithHer? For some reason that sounds very gay to me. Speaking as a non-American, I know straight dudes outside the US weren't fretting about a Trump victory the way women and gays were.

I actually know this guy, Larry Sanger. He's pretty emotionally fragile--I don't think this has much to do with wikipedia.

by Anonymousreply 17September 4, 2021 5:59 AM

Well I call BS on Mr. Wikipedia when he claims that FOX news is unfairly laughed at and not allowed to be used as a legit fact source. It's the most propaganda driven news site out there. And that's not my opinion, there have been actual studies done on all media sources. Yet he is bitching that Wiki is becoming a propaganda machine for establishment.

My favorite thing about Wikipedia is what I call “touch o’ Canada.”

Busy Canadian beavers quickly descend on any topic with the remotest connection to the Maple Leaf State and start inserting their non-sequetorial Canadian Content in the first paragraphs.

As gay people, I guess we know what it’s like to be an invisible minority dwarfed by a far larger culture- but we are not as adamant about it.

I tried updating my employers website about 10 years ago because it was nothing but a glowing media ad. Boy was I in for a surprise. They had someone on there full time removing and flagging everything no matter how factual it was like law suits they lost on pubic record. We went around and around until I tired and finally gave up. It's totally a propaganda machine depending on who is monitoring the page. It was a for-profit college. At first they wouldn't even allow those words. Scummy mother fuckers.

The Wikipedia cofounder is a right wing awhile and wants to destroy the truth. He wants unfounded right wing conspiracy theories to be included in Wikipedia pages and this make the website irrelevant. He is moron and idiotic asshole

by Anonymousreply 21September 4, 2021 6:28 AM

Freddie Sayers used to be an actor. He played Prince William when he was younger.
