Did he get a fair deal or was he cancelled.
He had a rough childhood (so what?), but he became arguably the first real superstar of film. But he threw it all away by wading into politics far deeper than his education or occupation should have allowed him to. Once he started spouting off nonsense in that charged climate, he had to go.
He was the Susan Sarandon or Natalie Maines of his day. Shut up and sing!

This is ancient history, OP.
I doubt you will get any balanced or sensible response.

[quote] he had to go.
Lots of studio stars left Hollywood to do stuff in Britain, France and Rome at that time. It was a great time!

What do you want to cancel him for, OP, the left-wing beliefs that got him driven out of the country during the Red Scare of the 1950s, or his fondness for underage girls?
Because yes, he liked girls in their early or middle teens, and married a few.

R4 He was already cancelled in the 50s, and he's been fuckin' dead for over 40 years.
Should we dig him up and yell at him, OP?

Didn't he leave in 1949?
Does anyone here have ANY facts?

The OP did NOT say that, learn to read

Why not compare yesterday's cancel culture to today's? Maybe you'll learn something.

That would be interesting.
I compare the current hysteria to the 1950s Red hysteria and the 1690s Witches hysteria and. I suppose, the 19th century Bowdlerised-literature hysteria and the 1930-60s Hays Code Hysteria.
But I'd like some clever person to give us a better analysis why otherwise-sensible adults start behaving like Henny-Penny.

What did he do to deserve getting cancelled?
I got to be honest I’ve tried to watch his films and it’s hard. I could watch Buster Keaton all day but Chaplin has been tough.

I find them both unamusing, R10. And Virginia Woolf agrees with us. She (and I assume her husband) went to see The Dictator in February 1941 and confided in her diary—
[quote] 'We have been to Charlie Chaplin. Like the milk maid we found it boring.'

He was a pedophile and a creep.

Thought he pulled a Polanski split before he got jailed for being a pedio. Supposedly left Old; Blighty his 'true home' for the same reason, He notoriously cheap & Switz. way more costly than England. They do charge lots to white wash & look the other way re: your cough..'hem hem picadillos. In Switz. money talks & anything walks
