NBC Correspondent Shaquille Brewster Accosted On Air During Live Shot Of Hurricane Ida Aftermath

Shaquille Brewster, an NBC News and MSNBC correspondent, was doing a live shot on the Hurricane Ida aftermath in Gulfport, MS, when a man jumped out of a white pickup truck and ran toward him and began shouting something at him.

Brewster tried to reorient the crew away from the intrusion, telling host Craig Melvin, “I am going to turn this way, because we deal with some people every once in while.” He then went on with his live shot, but then said he would throw it back to Melvin as the man continued shouting. The man then got back into the frame and confronted Brewster face to face.

“Hey, hey, hey, hey,” Melvin responded, telling viewers, ‘We’re going to check back in with Shaq Brewster just to make sure all is well. There’s a lot of crazy out there. A lot of crazy.”

Melvin went on to another segment but later said that Brewster was OK.

“Appreciate the concern guys. The team and I are all good!” Brewster later wrote on Twitter.

Melvin later wrote, “This is beyond unacceptable and disgusting. @shaqbrewster was trying to do his job on a beach in Gulfport, MS. Shaq is ok. This guy who nearly attacked him clearly is not.”

He told viewers, “I do want to note here for a moment, you probably saw or heard a few moments ago a correspondent was disrupted by some whacky guy in his live shot there in Mississippi. Pleased to report that Shaquille Brewster is doing just fine. Shaq is okay.”

MSNBC President Rashida Jones said in a statement, “Shaq Brewster is an exceptional journalist. Like the consummate professional, he did not let someone intimidate him from doing his job. We’re glad he and the team are safe, and we couldn’t be more proud and supportive of their work.”

Dan Shelley, executive director of the Radio Television Digital News Association, wrote, Among the dangers facing journalists today — angry members of the public who either don’t like, or don’t understand, the news media’s role in society. We @RTDNA are grateful @shaqbrewster is OK.”

Well that fucking sucks.

It's pretty clear that black people aren't safe any where in the US.

If you can be attacked while working for a major news network broadcasting LIVE on air? You can be attacked any where.

by Anonymousreply 1August 30, 2021 8:18 PM

We really don’t need to see reporters being blown around by hurricane winds anymore. We got it, wind strong, make move.

by Anonymousreply 2August 30, 2021 8:18 PM

Qanon Trump freak probably going psycho about fake news.

by Anonymousreply 3August 30, 2021 8:21 PM

Add in some home-grown racism, and you have the MAGA recipe, r3!

by Anonymousreply 4August 30, 2021 8:30 PM

He probably wanted to make sure everyone was fully vaccinated and socially distanced. I think I heard him ask if anyone needed a mask.

by Anonymousreply 5August 30, 2021 8:56 PM

R1, Really? I heard it was because the guy was sick of the out of town news and their storm porn down there.

I heard nothing about fucking race. Not everything is about race.

by Anonymousreply 6August 30, 2021 9:41 PM

I saw that happen live. I swore the obnoxious guy was black too...

by Anonymousreply 7August 30, 2021 9:57 PM

R6, how dare people report on current events!

If they ignored the hurricane you'd attack them for that.

The man was just doing his job, no need to be a cunt about it

by Anonymousreply 8August 30, 2021 10:00 PM

This happened five years ago in Iowa. "Cities" there are generally fine; small towns are racist AF.

Maybe guy is angry reporter not wearing mask.

I wear a mask whenever I’m around the Donald.

by Anonymousreply 10August 31, 2021 5:49 AM

I'm not condoning tr behavior of the woman in R9, but her son had just been shot and killed by cop the day before, which was why the news crew she accosted was there filming in the apparent trailer park. She appeared to be out of her mind.

It's not like she was some rando hanging off her porch with a Sundance cig hollering slurs at someone reporting on a city council meeting or something.

by Anonymousreply 11August 31, 2021 5:53 AM

Trump made it vastly worse of course, but the republicans have been brainwashing their “base” for decades not to believe anything you hear in “the liberal media” — only believe Republican controlled news media, they are told.
It was hard to hear what the man was saying, but he seemed to be yelling, “Report it accurately!”

The hurricane? Really? Like, what could Brewster be saying about it that could be potentially inaccurate, sufficiently so that it required white male admonishment?

The guy's head was misshapen, like his mom had practiced headbinding on him as an infant.

R12- YIKES.

by Anonymousreply 14August 31, 2021 7:43 AM

R6, where the fuck would you have heard that since no one knows who the hell he is and there is no video of him saying whatever the hell you think he thinks?

by Anonymousreply 15August 31, 2021 7:46 AM

Do people not understand that you don’t get in a reporter’s face just because you don’t like the way they cover a topic? Or to give them advice on how to do their jobs?

How stupid is it to argue that the guy was just sick of the “out of town news”? Wtf? I’m sick and tired of many things, but I don’t get in anyone’s face to criticize or correct them while they’re doing their jobs.

by Anonymousreply 16August 31, 2021 7:49 AM

Moreover, R16, the guy couldn't possibly have know how Brewster was covering the topic. He jumped out of a white pickup truck or SUV some distance down the beach, and ran towards the reporter. Brewster shifted his position in order to get the approaching guy out of camera view, but then he charged into the shot, getting between Brewster and his camera, yelling inarticulately.

R7, no, the guy was not black.

by Anonymousreply 17August 31, 2021 7:59 AM

^^ known

by Anonymousreply 18August 31, 2021 7:59 AM

R6, Yeah, right.

by Anonymousreply 19August 31, 2021 8:59 AM

Only one political bent in this country has a leader who calls the media "the enemy of the people."

Whether race was a factor or not, we know that man's addled mindset.

R22 I think it the wind reshaping the guy's hair that makes it look so odd from that angle. I never thought that a closely clipped natural would be so convenient in hurricane winds. You go Shaquille girl - go!

So, from OP's photo, are they arguing about who could top 20 inches?

by Anonymousreply 33August 31, 2021 3:44 PM

R6 not everything is about race, but many things are. There’s no way to say definitely that the reporter’s race didn’t come into play when the guy decided to attack him for whatever reason.

by Anonymousreply 34August 31, 2021 3:48 PM

R29, surpassed only by the morons who "liked" something so stupid.

by Anonymousreply 35August 31, 2021 4:02 PM

R6, currently, in the south, everything IS ABOUT RACE AND POLITICAL PARTY AFFILIATIONS.

I understand that this seems unbelievable to many, but it isn’t. Trust me.

I tried eotking a job out here (in the south) in order to put more money away, before moving back to California. I told no one that I was moving back. My boss IMMEDIATELY asked me where I was from, and as soon as I said, “California”, I became public enemy number one.

One must look at these recent events from an insider’s POV, in order to clearly understand what is currently happening in America’s Midwest and South.

Millions of white men across America are blaming ALL OF THEIR STRUGGLES AND PROBLEMS ON PEOPLE OF COLOR, IMMIGRANTS, WOMEN, AND THOSE WHOM THEY PERCEIVE TO BE PROGRESSIVES.

It really is that simple. And guess what? MANY African Americans down here are going along with the irrational white man’s program , in order to survive and keep their jobs and homes.

It’s HORRIBLE out here. People have zero issues with getting in the face of those whom they perceive to be “taking something away” from them.

If you’re anywhere but in these areas, you’re gonna believe the bullshit about “not everything is centered on race”.

In the south? EVERYTHING is centered on race.

I cannot wait to GTFOH. Horrible place to live for anyone who isn’t a white, evangelical Christian who is a hardcore conservative. Please believe me when I say this. It’s not hyperbole at all.

by Anonymousreply 36August 31, 2021 4:20 PM

That is a lie, r36.

There are white progressive and liberal voters in the South.

Granted we are outvoted everytime, but we are here.

by Anonymousreply 37August 31, 2021 4:36 PM

He looks like they put one of those Turkish fez caps on his head when he was a child and left it on as he was growing up and his head shape is now reflective of that fact..

by Anonymousreply 38August 31, 2021 4:41 PM

R37, I NEVER said white liberals aren’t living in the south, did I?

Please read what I wrote. This has nothing to do with us liberals of any color living in the south. What I wrote is that liberals are treated like shit in the south by conservatives.

by Anonymousreply 39August 31, 2021 4:46 PM

Pardon me, r36.
Suspect Identified In On-Air MSNBC Assault, Arrest Warrants Issued By Mississippi Police

A man who might have violated his probation in Ohio by traveling to Mississippi is being sought by police in the storm-hit state as a suspect in yesterday’s on-air assault of MSNBC correspondent Shaquille Brewster.

The Gulfport Police Department in Mississippi has identified the suspect as Benjamin Eugene Dagley of Wooster, Ohio, and today issued arrest warrants charging him with two counts of Simple Assault, one count of Disturbance of the Peace, and one count of Violation of Emergency Curfew.

According to the department, the suspect was traveling in a Ford truck on Highway 90 during a city-wide curfew caused by Hurricane Ida. After public assistance in identifying the man, police reviewed Dagley’s criminal history and contacted Ohio’s Cuyahoga County Adult Probation Department regarding a potential violation of probation. One of the conditions of Dagley’s probation is a travel restriction.

Gulfport police believe that Dagley is no longer on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and is traveling in a white 2016 Ford F150 bearing Ohio License Plate number PJR1745. The police ask anyone knowing of his whereabouts or spotting the truck contact their local law enforcement agency.

Brewster, an NBC News and MSNBC correspondent, was doing a live shot in the hurricane’s aftermath yesterday when a man jumped out of a white pickup truck and ran toward him, shouting and seeming to rush up against the reporter.

Watch footage of the incident below.

The live shot quickly cut to MSNBC host Craig Melvin, who appeared startled as he said, “Hey, hey, hey, hey. We’re going to check back in with Shaq Brewster just to make sure all is well. There’s a lot of crazy out there. A lot of crazy.”

Brewster later tweeted, “Appreciate the concern guys. The team and I are all good!,” though Melvin later wrote, “This is beyond unacceptable and disgusting. @shaqbrewster was trying to do his job on a beach in Gulfport, MS. Shaq is ok. This guy who nearly attacked him clearly is not.”

MSNBC President Rashida Jones later said in a statement, “Shaq Brewster is an exceptional journalist. Like the consummate professional, he did not let someone intimidate him from doing his job. We’re glad he and the team are safe, and we couldn’t be more proud and supportive of their work.”

The on-air incident apparently isn’t the first time the suspect has been caught misbehaving on camera: A 2017 Cleveland Plain Dealer report indicated that Dagley faced criminal charges after being caught on tape breaking into an electroplating company he previously owned and drilling holes in various chemical tanks. A security guard at the Cleveland Plating company required medical attention after being exposed to the hazardous chemicals from the tanks.

[bold]Arrest warrant issued for Ohio man accused of confronting NBC's Shaquille Brewster on live TV[/bold]

Mississippi police issued an arrest warrant Tuesday for an Ohio man who they say confronted NBC News' Shaquille Brewster on live television.

The man, Benjamin Eugene Dagley, of Wooster, Ohio, will be charged with two counts of simple assault, one count of disturbing the peace and one count of violating an emergency curfew, Gulfport police said in a statement.

He could also be in violation of his probation in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, if he traveled without authorization, police said.

Dagley had not been arrested by late Tuesday afternoon, and he could not be immediately reached at publicly listed telephone numbers.

His ex-wife in Ohio declined to comment.

Court documents in Ohio showed the 54-year-old once pleaded guilty to vandalism, inducing panic and attempted assault.

Cleveland.com reported that Dagley was arrested on suspicion of drilling holes into tanks of dangerous chemicals in 2017.

The break-in occurred at Cleveland Plating, an electroplating company that Dagley once owned, according to the report.

Representatives for Cleveland police and Cuyahoga County prosecutors could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

It wasn't immediately clear why Dagley was in Gulfport, Mississippi, nearly 1,000 miles south of Wooster, Ohio, and in the middle of a major storm.

Brewster was doing a live MSNBC shot from Gulfport, reporting on Tropical Storm Ida in coastal Mississippi, when a man pulled up in a white pickup truck and sprinted toward him.

The man got in Brewster's face before Brewster calmly ended the report. The man could be heard shouting at Brewster to "report accurately."

Ohio is quickly becoming the sister state to Florida.

by Anonymousreply 45September 1, 2021 12:59 AM

r45, from what I hear from family who live there, they're already at that point. Psycho deplorables live there.

“Hey Ohio! Keep your crackpots up there. We have sufficient, thank you!”

by Anonymousreply 47September 1, 2021 5:07 AM

So we're just using the word disgusting to describe any behavior we don't like? And what is this "nearly attacked" bullshit? I don't yelling at a reporter is that big of a deal.

by Anonymousreply 48September 1, 2021 10:58 AM

Fuck off R48. Getting in someone's face and yelling during a pandemic is assault AND an attack.

by Anonymousreply 49September 1, 2021 1:09 PM

R48, are you so far-gone that you think literally getting into someone's face when they did nothing to you is perfectly normal? I bet you bitch about "woke" nonsense yet disgusting behavior like that is rational to you. Sick fuck.

by Anonymousreply 50September 1, 2021 3:58 PM

I wouldn't call it normal but I would stop short of calling it disgusting. I think it's obnoxious but not a personal attack. Sorry I don't someone should be executed for being an asshole. You use of the word woke tells me that you're a massive idiot and I don't care if you hate me.

by Anonymousreply 51September 1, 2021 6:47 PM

And I NEVER called it perfectly normal. You can't argue with me without telling a bald-face lie. Now that is disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 52September 1, 2021 6:48 PM

You're not worth hating. You're also a hyperbolic moron for thinking anyone said anything about "executing." You are in fact the type of person who waves off something like this, yet you will bitch about some woke nonsense - that was my point. And you've proven it.

by Anonymousreply 53September 1, 2021 6:50 PM

Wow look at you getting your big important point proven. Here is your trophy for being such an impressive man. Eat shit, I hope some psycho screams in your face.

by Anonymousreply 54September 1, 2021 6:52 PM

You're ill, R54. You are ill.

by Anonymousreply 55September 1, 2021 6:54 PM
