Who is the Bigger Pain in the ASS - Bette Midler or Barbra Streisand?
by Anonymous | reply 202 | April 15, 2022 3:26 AM |
Streisand by a CUNTree mile.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 30, 2021 5:26 PM |
Bette has had far more people who refused to ever work with her again.
Barbra is exacting, but Bette is difficult.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 30, 2021 5:27 PM |
Barbra is a perfectionist who isn't able to get out of her own way.
Bette is just a miserable cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 30, 2021 5:27 PM |
It all depends, OP. Who is a bigger pain in the ass in regards to... what?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 30, 2021 5:28 PM |
Babs is more delusional and demanding, Bette is just a miserable, angry cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 30, 2021 5:28 PM |
Barbra is exacting, but Bette is difficult.
Yes.
Midler is outright disliked by many former colleagues, who all think she's a big cunt. Some people have Streisand frustrating, but only insofar as she's been trying to achieve EXACTLY what she thinks is best for whatever she's working on.
Streisand is really a perfectionist, who can come off as pain because of that. Midler is nasty for stature's sake.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 30, 2021 5:30 PM |
I remember something posted here years ago. A DLer was renting his place in Laguna Beach and Bette Midler came to look at it. She brought an assistant.
All of Bette's questions were asked through the assistant and the DLer was only allowed to address the assistant.
To me, that screams someone with issues.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 30, 2021 5:34 PM |
According to a sound engineer who has worked with many famous recording stars, Streisand is at least not as bad as Anita Baker.
Artists hardly ever bad mouth each other backstage at the Grammys. But Al Schmitt, who won the Best Engineer award for his work with Diana Krall, managed to shoehorn in a put-down.
While praising Krall as "easy to work with," he contrasted her with Anita Baker, whom he called "very difficult." He elaborated with another comparison.
"She [Barbra Streisand] can be tough. But at least you know what she wants and there's a light at the end of the tunnel. With Anita Baker, that's not true."
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 30, 2021 5:52 PM |
Oh, Anita Baker is famously loathed in the industry. Major cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 30, 2021 5:53 PM |
Barbra at least has the talent to warrant being difficult, Bette is just trashy and tacky.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 30, 2021 5:56 PM |
Bette has had far more people who refused to ever work with her again.
That's because she's not and has never been as big a star as Babs.
And "Barbra is exacting?" Ha ha, very funny. I think R5 nailed it, "delusional and demanding."
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 30, 2021 5:58 PM |
Bette has always been brassy and loud. A lot of people don't like her style of outspokenness. Barbra is more "do" than "talk"
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 30, 2021 6:03 PM |
Could they not both be shrieking harridans?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 30, 2021 6:04 PM |

I would say Midler, because she's very marginally talented. In fact, her talent is completely indiscernible.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 30, 2021 6:06 PM |
Bette Midler. She's stupid. Nothing personal, I like her, but I like my dog, know what I mean ?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 30, 2021 6:07 PM |
That's Miss Bacall to you, R15. And don't you forget it! Besides only my friends call me Betty and you most certainly aren't a friend.

Those recording breaking grosses for Hello Dolly! would tell you otherwise.
I would say between that and Hocus Pocus becoming a beloved Halloween classic for the younger generations, Bette's more well known than Streisand is currently.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 30, 2021 6:09 PM |
Wow this is a tough one. They’re both notorious class-A cunts. I’d say it’s a pretty even tie, with maybe Bette being a little more of a bitch than Babs.

"She [Barbra Streisand] can be tough. But at least you know what she wants and there's a light at the end of the tunnel..."

A little off-topic, why is Midler's former fugly tub manager/boyfriend Aaron Russo left out of her Wiki bio?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 31, 2021 2:07 AM |
Anita didn't quit, she just burned all her bridges. Every one of them. Shame really. And unnecessary.
Bette is awful, really awful. Her rotten behavior stems from her insecurity. She is well aware of her many inadequacies. Being cunty is a defensive thing.
As for Barbra, not a fan but I can recognize her talents. Her glory days may be long gone but at her best she was fire.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 31, 2021 10:55 AM |
I'm surprised by these responses. They're both rotten, but Streisand brags about it.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 31, 2021 2:55 PM |
Based on the stories posted about her over the years, Anita seems to be more in the vein of a Faye Dunaway, then just your basic stone cold bitch a la Dionne.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 31, 2021 5:18 PM |
R17 I've worked with Bette. Whatever else you think, she is far from stupid. Actually she's quite bright and intellectually curious.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 31, 2021 5:23 PM |
R35, that's a direct quote from co-star James Caan. He also worked with Streisand, but she was too powerful in the film industry at the time for him to dish. Though much later he did dis Babs over her liberal political views.

Barbra is the worst.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 31, 2021 11:52 PM |
Barbra by far. She and Steven Spielberg have for years sabotaged my career. Bette was so nice and tried to get me the Helen Slater role in Ruthless People but Barbra spoke to Disney and I was dumped.

They're on LSA. She and Luther Vandross toured together. She'd come out first and sign off her final number with "I hope you got your money's worth" and Luther would open with "How about my OPENING act?"
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 12, 2021 5:06 AM |
Midler by a mile.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 19, 2021 4:48 PM |
I think Midler has mellowed with age (I hope). She is hilarious on Twitter. Both she and Streisand often tweet about similar things, but Midler's posts are funnier and more thoughtful. Barbra takes herself way too seriously.
Anita Baker has always been a notorious cunt. I love how she paints herself as a retiree. Well, nobody wants to work with you anymore so I guess it's better to call it retirement than a career ending because you're a cunt and nobody wants to work with you anymore.

Bette Midler.
Barbra, as already stated, is a perfectionist.
Bette didn’t get her way during “Songs for the New Depression” and basically gave up on her music career.
Barbra doesn’t have that type of attitude.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 19, 2021 5:23 PM |
I’m curious about Anita Baker now too.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 19, 2021 5:25 PM |
Anita Baker just won back the rights to the masters of her first five albums. So if she isn't now, she will be sitting pretty well financially soon.
The woman may be crazy, but she did something a lot of entertainers in her age range are still fighting to obtain.

Anyone post this yet?
Bette and Barbra are two of the most talented singers ever. They also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout their lives. Despite that, both have a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood. At a time when gay people were oppressed beyond belief, we identified with their struggles and as they did with ours.

Barbra is a bigger pain in the ass due to her insecurity and perfectionism but Bette can be downright mean to people sometimes.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 19, 2021 11:14 PM |
Barbra can be exhausting, but she always has a vision. She wants to achieve a certain performance and she can get frustrated when she can't quite get it right, and she'll keep working until she gets it. Bette is just mean for the sake of being mean.
It's true that Anita Baker burned a lot of bridges with her nasty attitude, but her style of singing also went out of fashion which was a big reason why she kind of disappeared. Her crooning Quiet Storm type of R&B was replaced by hip hop and New Jack Swing in the early 90s.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 20, 2021 12:16 AM |
Fun fact about Anita Baker: When "Sweet Love" (her first single) first came out it was featured at the end of an episode of Moonlighting, and ABC got inundated with calls from viewers wanting to know who sang the song (that's how things worked in those pre-Internet days). That helped make the song a big hit.

Bette Midler is what one would call typical if one wanted to risk misunderstanding. Barbra also is typical, but she truly is mad. Midler is more grounded in the fact of her luck and "trajectory."
Neither will be a pain in the ass if they need you and know it.

It's terrible when a singer yells at her band or the sound people DURING a concert. I've seen that a few times, most recently with Cyndi Lauper. If there's a problem, do it with a smile. It turned off the audience when you're being mean to others

by Anonymous | reply 96 | September 21, 2021 4:00 AM |
I miss the old days when older female artists like Anita Baker and Tina Turner could have huge careers in their 40s. And Barbra, Bette, Dionne, Diana, Gladys, Patti and KT Oslin were all still going strong on the charts. I'm not sure what happened to end all of that, but I sure miss it. Those days are long gone.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | September 21, 2021 4:50 AM |
Not really. Diana was down on the Billboard charts by 40. Tina's solo career was huge outside the US but the follow ups to Private Dancer didn't do that well stateside. KT Oslin was a country artist, not pop. Dionne was done by about 1986. Ditto Aretha. Bette's album from around the time of Beaches was a blip, she'd been a bomb as a recording artist past the mid 1970s. Babs sold albums, that has to be acknowledged, but she meant little on the pop charts in 1980s (same as the 1960s, really.)
by Anonymous | reply 98 | September 21, 2021 4:54 AM |
There are still vital older women artists such as roots artists like Lucinda Williams, but the Easy Listening genre is dead.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | September 21, 2021 4:55 AM |
I think Linda Ronstadt was the last older female who was still getting Top 10 hits in her 40s. I can't think of anyone after her, except for Sia, but she made a point to hide her face and be anonymous because she was older.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | September 21, 2021 5:02 AM |
Madonna was still getting hit songs in her 40s.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | September 21, 2021 5:26 AM |
I think Barbra has severe OCD and a lot of her troubles (the perfectionism, the mall) come from that. People don't follow her rules and she gets fixated on small things. Some see it as being demanding but I think she can't help it. There's a youtube video where she is giving the editor a hard time on Yentl because a beat of music is missing. (She's actually right though. The song did sound better when she got her beat back.)
Midler seems like she can just be nasty sometimes. I remember Sandra Bernhard telling a story of how she met her and said what a big influence Midler was on her. Midler said something like so what? What do I care.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | September 21, 2021 5:31 AM |

[R46], I never heard of Bette not getting her way on "Songs for the New Depression." Or that it caused her to give up on her musical career. I do remember reading in Rolling Stone or Creem mag (this was 1974, so you have to forgive the dim cloud that hangs over the memory) that Bette was 'tearing her hair out' looking for material to record for, what I believe turned out to be SFTND. Do you have more information?
by Anonymous | reply 104 | September 21, 2021 5:58 AM |
Wasn't Rapture actually Cuntita Baker's second album? I think she recorded The Songstress on a different label and that was her first album. Rapture, her big breakthrough, was her second album.
Giving You The Best That I Got was her most successful, netting her a ROTY nomination as well as one for AOTY. By the early 90s she was starting to fade a bit although she did remain a Grammy favorite, winning again for Compositions. The night Mimi Carey got humiliated by losing all six of her nominations for Daydream, one of the people she lost to was Baker. La Baker won Best R&B Female for I Apologize over Mimi's Always Be My Baby.

Anita Baker's career ended because she was a mega-bitch to everybody she had to deal with, and also her style of music fell out of favor in the early 90s when hip-hop and New Jack Swing took over. The Quiet Storm/Adult Contemporary sound was done.

I remember when [italic]10[/italic] with Bo Derek came out and a tabloid magazine ranked all of the top female entertainers on a scale of 1 - 10. Hollywood's top makeup artists, modeling agency execs and others were on this panel, rating women like Stefanie Powers, Farrah Fawcett, Jane Fonda, et al. It seems incredibly sexist and shaming now. Bette was rated as a 4 or 5, with some queen on the panel saying that she had "the nose of death". But what worked for her was her sheer force of personality. I think that they savaged Liza Minelli's looks too, but they really, really came for Bette. She's tough as nails, but it had to suck with people telling you that you weren't pretty enough to be in films.

Streisand? Midler? Anita Baker? Lauren Bacall? They all have their moments, but they have all delivered on an epic scale.
How about Batty Buckley and Tovah Feldshuh? Neither are untalented, but neither are worth nearly enough to have to put up with them. Vile. Mean. Petty. Narcissistic. Awful people.
Honorable Mention: Linda Lavin and Anne Meara.

R78 R104 Maybe I should say gave up on her recording career. She admitted this herself.
“Songs For The New Depression” was supposed to be her artistic breakthrough album where she became a singer-songwriter and shed her Divine Miss M image, hence the cover.
It was supposed to be a concept album based on a story of a mother and daughter’s perspective of when a daughter falls in love for the first time. Side A was supposed to be the daughters perspective, Side B was the mother’s perspective. In the album booklet, the artwork based on this concept is still there.
However the record label rejected the songs and scrapped the concept and added outtakes from “The Divine Miss M” (“Old Cape Cod”, “Marahuana”) and doing a disco cover of “Strangers in the Night” and “Buckets of Rain” were label suggestions Bette resented.
So she said after that whole ordeal, plus the album under performing, she lost interest in her recording career. It’s really her only album she wrote multiple songs for and they all but one was scrapped.
There used to be an incredible website for her called Bette on the Boards that had everything about her career.
It also had live outtakes from live performances for the filming of “The Rose”.
She had performed a cover of Ben E. King’s “Spanish Harlem” and this big huge song called “Roll The Holy Bones” which would have been awesome had it made the movie. You can hear the original version on YouTube by Daniel Moore, it’s more mid-tempo whereas Bette’s version was more along the lines of Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” but had that bluesy funk the songs in the movie had. Unfortunately it seems like it’s lost now that the site is gone.

Speaking of “The Rose”, because I’m a raging queen and it’s one of my favorite movies, I cried tears of joy a few years ago when I had discovered Janis Joplin had actually done a live cover of “Stay With Me Baby”, just like in the movie. It’s on YouTube.
Also, before “Songs for the New Depression”, Bette had recorded an album called “Miss M Goes Motown” and it was scrapped in 1975.

Even though the 70s were before my time, I like a lot of Bette's music from this period. Her song selections were interesting and she really could sing. There's also a sense of fun to all of her albums. I don't like much of her 80s output when she got the Adult Contemporary makeover i.e. songs like Wind Beneath My Wings and From A Distance, which is one of the worst songs ever written. Just Lite FM garbage. Those songs made her a bloody fortune, though.

Yes. I would much rather listen to Bette than Barbra. Barbra's voice is an incredible instrument, but it's so perfect that it bores me, if that makes sense. I admire Barbra's voice and technique but I feel Bette's connection to her songs.
I feel Bette's connection to her songs.
She does connect to her songs. But it only happens when she's just Bette Midler singing. On her own, she can make a simple song a three act play. But only then.
She cannot play a character. The woman cannot act. She's had many opportunities, but she can't do it. She's Bette Midler and that's it. After all these years in the business, she's no better than a student in a first semester acting class. She will NEVER give up being Bette Midler. That's the only character she's ever played.
So many old films from early Hollywood have disintegrated and are lost. Sadly, Midler's GYPSY is not one of them. OMG.

Midler is more genuine and accessible to fans and strangers. Streisand cannot let her hair down unrehearsed with anyone but her small inner circle. She so pretentious she smells.
How DO I KNOW? I made it up.

There was a Jewish lady in our legal secretary pool who’d always attendour holiday potlucks to get these appetizers another secretary would bring every year. Mushrooms stuffed with cream cheese, crabmeat and bacon. She’d shrug her shoulders and say, “So what? It’s only once a year. It’s not like I have to go to confession, right?”. And she’d manage to get the last ones to take home too…I thought it was hysterically funny.

The story back in the day was that Bette's music career derailed because she punched a radio bigwig at an industry party and he had her stuff pulled from many of the top stations. At least that was what was reported in the gossip columns at the time. He said something snarky about her current single and she hauled off and slugged him. I can't remember if they said she had been drinking as well.
Bette did struggle after her first album's success until she did The Rose. There was a sense that she wasn't going to measure up to her initial hype , while those who worked for her like Barry Manilow and Melissa Manchester were fairing much better. The Rose put her back on the map in a big way, only to have it crashing down two years later with the Jinxed debacle.

Did Jane Russell have a face lift in the 1960s or early 1970s? Someone linked to a Dinah featuring Russell, Debbie Reynolds, Jane Powell etc. and Russell looked very pulled (and with very lesbian hair).
by Anonymous | reply 192 | October 3, 2021 8:35 PM |
Of course Jane Russell had a facelift, R192, all of them did. Since she was 40 in 1921, it would have been in the 60s or 70s. Whether she was a lesbian has been rumored since forever, probably because of her butchier than butch demeanor. And a story about her an a chorus girl in one of her roadshows.
I remember something posted here years ago. A DLer was renting his place in Laguna Beach and Bette Midler came to look at it. She brought an assistant. All of Bette's questions were asked through the assistant and the DLer was only allowed to address the assistant.
I've heard of other celebrities doing this, like Lucille Ball, who would only allow flight attendants to ask questions of her ("Would you like a glass of champagne, Miss Ball?") through her assistants.
Some Dataloungers will claim celebrities [italic]need[/italic] some sort of protection from the hoi polloi, but that's just bullshit that enables ridiculous and snobbish behavior. The truth is that genuinely emotionally secure celebrities would never do this--the only ones who do this are celebrities who were once poor and who secretly fear being poor again.

Bo Derek really was gorgeous. Those movies she made (mostly “directed” by her husband) were just abysmal, though, and exposed her lack of even rudimentary ability.
But to bring this full circle, Babs and Bette would have sacrificed their firstborn child to look like her.
