[quote] The marriage only lasted about 2 years.
They were together for much longer than that. They started seeing each other in 1964. The press had a meltdown during a cruise they took back in the day. According to Ryan o'Neal, Mia asked him to point at Sinatra when he was shooting on the adjacent lot, she didn't know which one he was, and the next day she was there is a see-through baby doll slip. Sinatra's butler wrote in his memoir that Mia was very sexy, very beautiful at the time, in a Kate Moss kind of way, and was constantly naked around the house, flaunting her body. She was skinny, but the right amount of everything at the right place. I , for one, had a rush on her watchind peyton Place as a kid, and I still think she was at her most beautiful during her marriage to Frank, and the most beautiful starlet of the 60's

I suppose there was a trend toward those pale ethereal waif types. The men who are attracted to them are fucked up. I suppose by the time Woody Allen got her, she had beefed up her intellectualism and was a bit more substantial.

I think I can understand why they were attracted to each other. She was unique, like a "sprite." I think she intrigued him and he felt tenderness towards because I guess she did seem like a fresh, naive kid to him. I think she was attracted to him because he had a strong, masculine presence and she felt protected with him. Of course their relationship didn't work as a marriage. He would make dumb jokes in his act like "I finally found a broad I can cheat on" that were offensive to her. And she wanted a career and he didn't want her to work. So they divorced. But their remained friends forever afterward. In fact, when the Woody Allen fiasco hit the fan Frank offered to have Woody's legs broken. I thought that was pretty cool. Mia should have taken him up on that one.

I don't think Mia ever appeared like a naive kid to anyone except the unsuspecting audience. She was a muse of Dali who hosted the most notorious orgies in NYC, and Burton wrote in his bitchy autobio something along the lines of "her shtick - I was born last week, I have no idea what happened ever in Show business or who was who before that, look into my big innocent saucer eyes" was very tired

People are so focused on her private life they forget how talented she was - even Woody admits it.

[quote] What I never get about her story - her Dad died and the family was broke so she reluctantly became an actress
They were destitute after Farrow's death (= living in the 11 rooms rent control flat in central park west LOL) and Poor Mia had to work. Her godfather, uncle George (Cukor) was paying her to attend shows and take notes for him. I think 50$ / evening. then Maureen sent Mia to an audition for THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, of course she got the part and mama called auntie Vivien (Leigh), who not only attended the show, but had her sign with her agent and made a few calls to have her signed with Fox, as a personal favor. That's how she got Peyton Place. In the clip below, at 4"06 she says that she knew she would get the part in the Wilde play. Extremely self-assured, very beautiful, and flirting shamelessly with andrews

by Anonymous | reply 118 | September 1, 2021 1:26 PM |
Nobody envied Mia in the '80s, she wasn't making money or winning awards. Woody paid her scale and she couldn't get work with any other half-decent director--which is why she chased down Woody in the first place because her acting career was over by the late '70s
Frank divorced Mia because she didn't even pretend to hide her extramarital affairs, most notably with John Phillips from the Mamas and the Papas. Then she stole her friend Dory Previn's husband, André, and the two of them slept around, including Mia's dalliance with the cinematographer Haskell Wexler--which is understandable, André was ugly as hell and like all classical musicians was probably a throbbing asshole.
When Mia first got together with Woody in 1980, after she wrote to him praising the film Manhattan (where Woody dates a 17-year old), she willingly participated in threesomes with Woody and other women, including 17-year old Christina "Babi" Engelhardt.
During the custody trial Mia tried to seduce Mike Nichols while trying to land a role in that movie "Wolf" (which ultimately went to Kate Nelligan) and then after the whole mess with Woody dated another neurotic misanthropic Jew, Philip Roth.

R119 you can read Christina Engelhardt's interview with the Hollywood Reporter from 2018, the autobiography of Frank Sinatra's valet, George Jacobs along with any book written about John Phillips/Mamas and the Papas, and a People magazine story on Mia from December 1979 that notes her affair--my mistake, it was with the cinematographer Sven Nykvist, not Wexler.

She was and is a much better actress than she's ever given credit for. her reputation was spoiled by her choices in england, but nobody could shine in drecks like "see no evil". IMO she's the most versatile of that brood (fonda/dunaway/deneuve/redgrave)

[quote]Ava Gardner (actual quote)
It was almost certainly NOT an actual quote.
Kitty Kelley initially claimed she hired some guy named Michael Thornton to interview Ava because Ava wouldn't agree to be interviewed by Kelley, and he was the guy who got that quote from her. After the book was published and people questioned her sources, she admitted that Thornton hadn't interviewed Ava for her at all, he'd done some interview for a London magazine. The quotes (including this one) never showed up in the London magazine article.
Over the years Thornton has told the Daily Mail and other tabloids that he got Ava drunk and she "confessed all" to him but it doesn't seem likely.

[quote]I'm telling you. Frank is not Ronan's father. Frank JR, is!!!!
I was under the impression that Frank Jr was gay - based on rumors when he was kidnapped in 1963, and lack of real marriage to anyone. I don't care how many children he supposed to have had out of wedlock, or a . Rona Barrett (who was close to the Sinatra family at one point) thought that Frank Jr staged the kidnapping to get attention from his father. His father totally ignored Jr because he saw him as a weak sissy mama's boy. Rona thought Frank Sr's closeness to daughter Nancy bordered on "unnatural."

R146, I worked on a film with Mia about 20 years ago and she didn't do any press for it, saying no one had ever asked her to do a press junket before. She was very nice and gracious about it, but her appearance on Letterman was definitely a rarity. Mia doesn't chase publicity.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | September 1, 2021 3:34 PM |
R146/R151 it was very rare for a film star to appear on TV talk shows to plug a movie until the 1980s. For instance, none of the big 1970s male movie stars did Merv Griffin or the Tonight Show with the exception of Burt Reynolds - no Jack Nicholson, no Al Pacino, no Robert Redford. Women stars - no Faye Dunaway, no Barbra Streisand.

Where did you hear that? In Polanski's memoir he mentions nothing about an affair with Mia Farrow, and he was not shy about revealing the names of famous women he slept with. I don't believe they ever "fucked."
There's no evidence Mia Farrow ever "fucked" Steve McQueen, either. Lord knows, they were not each other's types. He was just a friend in the social circle Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate ran around in.

True story...I was at one of the those hodge podge auctions Julien's has from time to time a few years ago, and one of the random things up for auction was a huge, wooden giraffe sculpture owned by Mia. The kicker was that the buyer had to pick it up from her estate in Bumfuck, New England. (I forget where she lives.) From my recollection, no one bid on it...either in the auction house, or online. She was also selling a few other things, but the giraffe sticks out to me.
And yes, she does post a lot on IG about the "good ol' days." Nothing about Woody, of course, but lots about Frank and the people she knew back then. It seems most of the people she knew were her parents' age; very few friends her own age.

For the cunt at R174, from Mia's memoir "What Falls Away".
"In September I returned to Beverly Hills to film the pilot for Peyton Place. My school friend Tisha Sterling was now living at 809 North Roxbury Drive, the house where my family had lived and where my father died. Tisha’s mother, Ann Sothern, had rented the house, furniture and all. I accepted their invitation to stay for the three weeks of rehearsal and filming, and I gave no thought to ghosts. Now, one year later, the contents of the house were eerily unchanged. Each chair and lamp and book was in its place, exactly where my parents had left them. Ms. Sothern now slept in my mother’s sorrow bed, and my old room had become a crowded beauty parlor equipped with a professional hair dryer and a big drop-backed chair, a makeup table and a mirror framed in light—Ms. Sothern was a famous television star. Tisha and I slept in my sisters’ old beds. Sometimes in the middle of the night we were awakened by the sound of the heavy Spanish dining-room chairs being moved on the wooden floor beneath us, and often I went to work in the morning exhausted."

What this thread and the Sharon Tate thread taught me is that these hippie, long haired men from the 60s/70s were all a bunch of slimy, disgusting creeps.
by Anonymous | reply 244 | September 3, 2021 8:34 PM |
Not particularly on topic I suppose, but my parents had them up to the house for dinner now and then when I was a kid, maybe circa mid 60s. Of course we were quite young and had no idea who they were. They were both quite gracious, lovely and friendly to my sister and I.
I guess you can never tell what goes on behind closed doors.

Frank and Mia?
Andre and Mia?
Maureen and John?

[quote] And yet Woody and Soon Yi's marriage lasted far longer than any of Mia's did.
Of course it has. What else can they do but be married to each other? Woody had to marry her to save face, to make it seem like he was having a genuine relationship with her instead of just wanting to pound her pussy. They have an image to protect, the image of a happily married "in love" couple. It's such a farce. Pictures of them are so hilarious; Soon-Yi is almost always blank faces and Woody always looks like he's very ill at ease.
How could Woody Allen and Soon-Yi be allowed to adopt children, GIRL children? Woody was accused of child molestation. It seems to me that even if he was not convicted of anything that alone should have kept him out of the running for adopting children forever. And Soon-Yi doesn't strike me as an ideal candidate for an adoptive parent, either. Oh well, I guess if you have enough money you can buy yourself a few babies.

In that documentary in which they travel around Europe together on some jazz tour they seemed to have a great rapport. I liked her a lot. Very dry. Very direct.
Though I am not condoning what they did to Mia (& her whole family) in any way.

R247, right. A person of Allen's wealth can BUY children, girls or boys. He likes girls more.

The trouble with Mia, is that people high schoolishly feel they have to take sides with Mia and Woody and drag it into any discussion of Mia herself, even here where we're talking about her earlier life.
I've always thought that regardless of what one thinks about the Mia-Woody business, she was always pretty limited as an actress--the same waifish performance. She's the weakest thing in "Hannah and Her Sisters" even though she's the star. She's also the least interesting thing in "Rosemary's Baby". thank God Ruth Gordon steals the movie and Cassavettes seems perfectly cast as her husband. Tuesday Weld would have been terrific in the part but it probably was close to real life for her. Sandy Dennis and all her quirks also would have been a more interesting Rosemary. Mia's compulsive need to adopt is quite odd--I've worked with people like this and the foster care and adoption systems encourage this because there is a permanent shortage of suitable homes esp. for older children. Her family sounds quite mad--the alcoholic father, child molesting brother. Her marriages all seem to have involved odd pairings with father figures.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | September 4, 2021 3:29 AM |
R251, you're a lunatic. Mia's performance in Rosemary's Baby is fantastic, perhaps the greatest in any horror film. Sandy Dennis as Rosemary?? You are truly insane. Mia was also wonderful in Hannah. She was luminous and underplayed perfectly, but has several powerful scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 252 | September 4, 2021 3:57 AM |
R252 One of my favorite scenes in Hannah is when Mia goes over to her parents’ place to look after the alcoholic mother. Things calm down, the father starts playing “you are too beautiful“ on the piano, and there’s a close-up of Mia that is so beautiful, full of love and longing and disappointment. I rewatched the movie recently and thought what a good actress she is, shame she never got an Oscar.

Has anybody seen Woody Allen and Soon walking around uptown? The hold hands and never seemed to shy way from the public.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | September 4, 2021 5:02 AM |
R251, Mia was perfection in "Rosemary's Baby".
by Anonymous | reply 255 | September 4, 2021 6:10 AM |
R254, I have seen them together. She looks like his home health aide. I’ve alseen her without him and the word that popped into my head when I recognize her was “morose”. But I think she has resting bitch face.
Also my SIL was at Marymount with her and said she was very quiet but seemed smart, like “still waters run deep”.
by Anonymous | reply 256 | September 4, 2021 7:18 AM |
Woody and Soon-Yi's daughters are grown now and neither one has so much as hinted that he was ever inappropriate with them. For that matter, the only accusation of that nature ever, in sixty years of public life, came from Mia and Dylan, which is highly unusual since child molesters tend to be serial offenders. Once one victim speaks out, many others come forward...except in this case. Hmm.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | September 4, 2021 9:13 AM |
R252: Diane Wiest acts rings around her in "Hannah and her Sisters"--the film would have been like Interiors (not in a good way) without her. She is basically Allison McKenzie in NYC in "Rosemary's Baby". Sandy Dennis and her tics were made for the part.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | September 4, 2021 11:44 AM |
Yes, the operative word for Woody is "accused." Not "convicted."
by Anonymous | reply 259 | September 4, 2021 12:15 PM |
R254 I saw them together on Madison Avenue shortly after the scandal in the 90s. Woody looked like Woody, Soon-Yi looked terribly young and was wearing a little mini dress. They were indeed holding hands and politely fending off a gawker. It looked a little like the scene in Annie Hall where Alvy Singer is accosted by boorish fans.
by Anonymous | reply 260 | September 4, 2021 12:26 PM |
Does Soon Yi have any relationship now with Mia and her siblings?
by Anonymous | reply 261 | September 4, 2021 2:39 PM |
R258, I think you don't understand acting. Dianne Wiest has the flashier role in Hannah so you can actually see her acting. Nothing against Wiest, she's wonderful. Mia's role is more subdued. She's the supportive sister, but you can she the hurt in her eyes and she conveys the confusion of her predicament with precision. She's fantastic in the film.
by Anonymous | reply 262 | September 4, 2021 3:34 PM |
Mia seems to be telling us who Hannah is (so giving.....) rather than showing us. The Wiest character has to point out her superiority because Mia is "too subtle" to show it.
by Anonymous | reply 263 | September 4, 2021 3:38 PM |
Why is this a strange couple? Mia liked masculine accomplished artistic men. He surely fucked her to heaven many time with his huge dick. Plus, their bodies probably fit well together. Other than the cock, Frank was a pipsqueak. She was beautiful and young. Why wouldn't he want to enjoy her?
by Anonymous | reply 264 | September 4, 2021 3:42 PM |
[quote] For that matter, the only accusation of that nature ever, in sixty years of public life, came from Mia and Dylan, which is highly unusual since child molesters tend to be serial offenders.
Not necessarily. Some pervs fixate on one child, as in the case of Mary Kay LeTourneau. She started having sex with a 13 year old child when she was 34. She couldn't keep her hands off him. But he was the only child she ever went after sexually. My guess is that Woody was the same with Dylan; he wanted HER, not a slew of little girls.
by Anonymous | reply 265 | September 4, 2021 3:47 PM |
The case was thrown out by the fucking Yale-New Haven Child Sexual Abuse Clinic, not some random unqualified loons. People gloss over this all the time. The way that an incredibly reputable organization has been smeared by crazy Mia to peddle her revenge for decades is insane.
And yes, child molesters have some sort of past oddity or fixation, if not victims. Woody was into 17 year olds, which is a universe away from a prepubescent child. It's retarded how often people bring up Manhattan as "proof" he's a pedophile.

It was a way for Sinatra to gain Swinging-Sixties relevancy.
And it was a way for Farrow to elevate her image.
In 1966 when that segment aired, she was still known as a TV actress.
The marriage was a win-win for both of them. It served its purpose and then was dissolved.

Female pervs are very different that male pervs. Men are more inclined to continuously look for victims in numbers. You cannot compare the two.

Oh come on. You can't say all male pervs act one way and all female pervs act another way. Every situation is different. I think Woody Allen because besotted with the little blonde girl who was his adopted daughter, so besotted that he wanted physical intimacy with her. He definitely was fixated on her. Observers would comment on how he was always all over her showering her with physical affection and closeness. Sounds like the behavior of a perv to me.

I had no idea Mia was that famous or considered such a beauty! I have always thought of her as Woody Allen's frumpy actress girlfriend. I've never seen Rosemary's baby, just a few short snippets on tv when I was a kid.
She certainly seems to have something men respond to, I watched the Letterman clip posted earlier and he was totally into her.

Coincidentally, this morning I watched The Barretts of Wimpole Street on TCM starring MGM's Queen of the Lot Norma Shearer, but with Mia's mom Maureen O'Sullivan in a prominent supporting role. as her younger sister. As Elizabeth Barrett was a sheltered invalid, confined to her fainting couch, the director had everyone around her, but mostly Maureen O'Sullivan, frantically prance around Norma in the most hyper-maniacal fashion, flouncing petticoats and swishing ruffles from every dress edge to create a little energy on camera.
It was quite funny. At least it was a change for Maureen from Johnny Weissmuller and the chimp.

There have been so many many threads about her - she just keeps on giving. She's a real character. But bottom line was an exceptionally good understated actress.
It's a shame she missed the 70s - stuck in England with Previn making stuff like this.
A good friend of mine lived next door to the run down house where this film was shot. They just used the house as it was. Very few people own these whole houses anymore. They were all broken up into flats now worth millions a piece.
