The show seems uneven in parts, but they had some good characters, including this hottie Jason Cramer. As I recall, Oz was popular with edgy straight people who thought prison was cool and layered - just as they did more recently for Orange Is the New Black.

Loved it for the griping drama, the real-life (though I’m normally squeamish about such things), great eye candy, and the amazing cast. I mean, come on — when Charles Busch went to the chair in full Susan Hayward drag with Rita Moreno’s support!

I love watching pricks get their comeuppance, but also seeing the bad guys win sometimes.
I would've felt sorry for Winthrop and Guenzel, but they violently raped a woman for fun. So their getting turned into suck-fest prison bitches maybe taught them some empathy. Plus, Winthrop apparently got to be very good at sucking cock.

Not gay, but I watched it religiously. Or until its brutality and despair became ridiculously forced during the last season. I get the hopelessness, but not when it became so contrived. After awhile it became like Oscar Wilde’s “you need a heart of stone not to laugh”.
