HOT MESS: Matthew Modine threatens to sue Fran Drescher for slander!
This all relates to several KTLA interviews with members of Modine's SAG faction, which Drescher said violated Union rules. Modine is facing off with Drescher to lead the SAG Union in next month's elections.
“I’m ashamed of Fran Drescher,” Modine said tonight during a MembershipFirst town hall meeting. “I’m disappointed. But she’ll be judged by the people in the world after she’s gone, or by whatever god she worships.”
This is getting to be as nasty as the epic Valerie Harper vs. Melissa Gilbert battle of 2002!

As soon as people start bringing “god” into an argument, I can’t take them seriously anymore. Sounds very Republican-like. He’s starting to sound like he’s too emotional for the job. No wonder he lost last time.

Oh please R3. Drescher was implying Modine and his supporters were racist a couple of weeks back. She even tried bringing George Floyd into it.
Meanwhile, I don't think any of Fran's co workers have endorsed her, but several have publicly endorsed Modine.

I read Modine's plan on the website & I couldn't find a single thing wrong about it.
He sounds like he has learned from the mistakes of past few presidents & will fix lots of things that are wrong or neglected.
Fran seems to be running for something to do in her senior years.

Wonder how that will play with the voters. Seems like an unforced error since she's not likely to win.

Matthew Modine is part of the Membership First/GOP party. Fran is part of the United in Strength/DEM party.
FWIW the last time Matt ran for SAG office, a union that represents people who make their living off their appearance, he did not bother to get his missing canine tooth repaired. When brought to his attention he treated he was baffled that people noticed it. It made me wonder why he could not afford to get it fixed.
I see from the photo above he is putting a bit more effort into this round.

R18 not being familiar with their positions, are you saying that Modine's are more closely align to GOP principles, and Drescher Democratic principals?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 28, 2021 11:24 PM

That is how it appears to me. I do not think it is the official party line. MF looks like a lot older more established actors with not as many members and mostly likely will spend their efforts protecting the big earners. UFS looks more diverse with more members who make up the group known as working actors. The people whose faces you know but not their names, who don't have a team of lawyers, accountants, publicists, etc. but work a lot. They will most likely protect on set and wage issues.

R21 Thank you. An acquaintance just ran as a union delegate (I assume) and I checked his FB page and he's aligned with UFS, which makes sense given the person I know him to be. Team Fran then!

Apparently the whole drama is about an email she wrote where she made the point that one TV station gave more air time to Modine and his campaign than her and that was breaking the rules. And she added a link to an official article that stated the very same thing.
If I were a member, Fran would get my vote. Her and Anthony Rapp as co-chair (treasurer)? Fuck yeah. Modine comes off as a whiny douchebag in both elections (he ran against Andrea Zu ... uh, Gabrielle Carteris as well).

To someone like me (who has no connections to the entertainment industry) it's a mystery why anyone wants this job.

r26, I think the point is that any A-Lister (past or present, like can you imagine Johnny Depp campaigning for that position now that he's blacklisted?) wouldn't do this in the first place. Carteries did it, because she went after IMDB for making age discrimination easier in the casting process.

R29 the guy I know who ran as a delegate is a good person. I know his political leanings and i agree with him on those matters. He would align himself with people who are decent and working for the best for their members. I don't have a horse in this race so I don't really care. Just reading the thread, I questioned what R18 was insinuating by describing Modine and GOP and Drescher as DEM, so I asked. If my friend is aligned with one "side", which happens to be Fran's, then I expressed a hope that she wins, so that he wins.
Why does that bother you?

From the SAG Wikipedia entry:
[quote]The president of SAG – future United States President Ronald Reagan – also known to the FBI as Confidential Informant "T-10", testified before the committee but never publicly named names. Instead, according to an FBI memorandum in 1947: "T-10 advised Special Agent [name deleted] that he has been made a member of a committee headed by Mayer, the purpose of which is allegedly is to 'purge' the motion-picture industry of Communist party members, which committee was an outgrowth of the Thomas committee hearings in Washington and subsequent meetings ... He felt that lacking a definite stand on the part of the government, it would be very difficult for any committee of motion-picture people to conduct any type of cleansing of their own household".

Dresher is an opportunist. Some facts: A total of 122,154 ballots were mailed. Of the total number of votes, 32,362 were returned, equating to a return of 26.49%. In the election for president, Drescher received 16,958 votes, followed by Matthew Modine with 15,371 votes. For the post of secretary-treasurer, Fisher received 18,547 votes, followed by Anthony Rapp with 13,593 votes.

What was his plan on securing good health care? Vincent D'Onofrio is a supporter and on Twitter he shared a story about his acting influence losing coverage. Someone asked him what was Modine's plan and he directed the person to Membership First's site but even that didn't spell out what their plan was outside of wanting someone who could give transparency from the trustees. What is the actual plan for securing good health care?

First of all, Modine seems a bit unhinged. No one like that should be the president of SAG. But isn't Dresher a conspiracy theorist? And Rapp is okay with a Michael Jackson defender on the ticket? A mess.
Also: I side-eye anyone who uses "woke" as a slur. Are they calling out fake progressives or just triggered by certain social issues getting too much positive attention?
