My Gym Won't Comply with Indoor Mask Mandate

My state (Illinois) imposed an indoor mask mandate that goes into effect on Monday. I asked my gym about it, and they said that people would only be required to wear masks entering and leaving the building but not anywhere else. They said that they are complying with the CDC recommendations and will not require them to be worn. They said they don't plan on changing this anytime soon. So, I guess I have to find a new gym. They were requiring them everywhere in the gym up until this summer, and I guess they think Covid is over now. I thought if the state issues a mandate, businesses have to comply, but maybe I am wrong.

by Anonymousreply 39August 30, 2021 12:32 AM

Don't know about Illinois, but I'm in Oregon where we also have an indoor mask mandate, and there's a hotline for reporting businesses that aren't complying.

by Anonymousreply 1August 27, 2021 12:12 AM

Report them. The mask mandate means wearing a mask within interior spaces. Period.

by Anonymousreply 2August 27, 2021 12:13 AM

To top it all off, they charge you for the next month if you don't cancel by the 25th. I will look into reporting them, but I'm not sure where to call.

by Anonymousreply 3August 27, 2021 12:15 AM

I wouldn't just report them, I would report them loudly in front of the owner and then sashay away like Angela Bassett in front of the burning car in Waiting To Exhale

by Anonymousreply 4August 27, 2021 12:16 AM

Here are links to find out where to report them, OP

Thanks, r5. I'm usually not a tattle tale but this is pissing me off.

r4 I will wear my finest caftan.

by Anonymousreply 6August 27, 2021 12:24 AM

Stay home, op. I was looking forward to heading back to the gym after being vaccinated but covid is still uncontrolled in the US because Americans are non compliant with safety and health precautions. I don't argue with people who just won't observe masking or social distancing measures, I choose to ignore them completely.

by Anonymousreply 7August 27, 2021 12:55 AM

r7 I really missed working out and don't want to give it up. I'm only 3 months out from getting my second dose, so I hope that will be enough if everyone (or at least the majority as there are always a handful of assholes) is masked up. I'm just glad I live in a blue city in a blue state, so I don't have to deal with too many idiots.

I've already called around to other health clubs and they require masks indoors, so I plan to join one of them. It's just disappointing that my gym looked at me like I was crazy for wanting everyone to wear masks.

by Anonymousreply 8August 27, 2021 1:16 AM

OP I'll be you used to tell the teacher when a classmate said a naughty word, didn't you?

by Anonymousreply 9August 27, 2021 1:49 AM

So Gov. Pritzker made this call about five hours ago OP

Give your gym owners some time to let it sink in and understand. (Like 24 hours)

Have any other states started reimposing these sorts of restrictions?

r10 I did mention that the mandate starts on Monday, and if they would have to change things then, and the girl told me that no, they had no plans to change anything. That they only need to require masks upon entering and exiting but not while working out. I will talk to the owner on Monday and if they refuse to budge, I will flounce out in a huff and never return.

by Anonymousreply 11August 27, 2021 2:29 AM

Find another gym. If he is disregarding the law in this case, who knows how he is breaking the law elsewhere.

by Anonymousreply 12August 27, 2021 2:42 AM

FFS if you're that worried about getting Covid, don't go to the gym. Workout at home or go for a run outside.

by Anonymousreply 13August 27, 2021 4:06 AM

Down here in Deploraville, about a third of the deplorables are not wearing masks, and our deplorable city and parish officials said long ago they would not enforce ANYTHING. That's actually good though, since many will die I hope.

by Anonymousreply 14August 27, 2021 4:56 AM

[qupte] the girl told me

Why did you ask a child?

Again, five hours in, she may not have accurate information from the owners.

Stop being a MARY

by Anonymousreply 15August 27, 2021 10:09 AM

I'd take a dump in a shower stall as payback.

by Anonymousreply 16August 27, 2021 10:21 AM

R7 - I feel your pain. Pre-pandemic I found the absolute best gym that any place in this neck of the woods can be. Gorgeous pool, a wonderful view, actual former gymnasts as trainers (advantage of being in Eastern Europe), great locations. However, as is usually the case out here the law makes about as much sense as, well...convincing a DL-er to drain pasta. There are indoor mask mandates EVERYWHERE except at gyms. Working out around the lake and in parks (many nicely outfitted with sports equipment had been put of the question due to the extreme heat and humidity this summer) and in fall...torrential rain this year. Hence...we are just getting raincoats and walking. A huge damper on my physical and mental health.

by Anonymousreply 17August 27, 2021 10:35 AM

Why have gyms and gym-goers been so prominent in stories about non-compliance? I get that going to the gym is a major part of people’s lives (for the record: not mine), but anger and stubborn stupidity about the value of masking up seems bizarre to me. I mean, you go to a gym to remain strong and healthy, to increase aerobic capacity, and even to see your friends. Believe me, after seeing my husband suffer for a month from Covid, all those benefits can be wiped out in an instant.

by Anonymousreply 18August 27, 2021 10:54 AM

The pandemic taught me I don’t need a gym

by Anonymousreply 19August 27, 2021 11:21 AM

R18, the cliche about "dumb jocks" is based on something.....

by Anonymousreply 20August 27, 2021 12:12 PM

R18 don't listen to people like R20. The gym I went to was more like a spa. It had tons of classes, beautiful views, flat screen TV's in front of the cardio machines, nutritionists, a site with recipes and all kind of advice, other spa services and a good vibe. I saw few dumb jocks...rather it was populated by professional athletes and affluent residents of Woodland Hills. I met a FWB there who was one of many doctors who came for the training, a famous chef is still a friend I keep in touch with and any number of celebrities. I met lots of interesting people and, yes, they fucking masked up for the brief re-opening last June. They also hired and supported LGBT so it was a liberal and fun atmosphere. Usually I hate gyms, but if the vibe is right, then of course one misses it.

by Anonymousreply 21August 27, 2021 12:23 PM

R21, your gym's clientele and personnel obviously are different from those at R18's gym, where they won't wear masks -- the people at his gym are the dumb jocks, not the people you're lucky enough to meet at the gym you belong to.

by Anonymousreply 22August 27, 2021 12:29 PM

R22 - I agree about that and that is why, for me, it was worth the splurge on the high cost. I think I would never go if I had to deal with all kind of morons who won't mask up or trashy behavior and lack of cleanliness. Now I am in a place where the vaccination rate is 25%, and my six-pack and general sense of wellbeing have gone to hell. Just walking and jogging isn't gonna do it anymore after 40. Hence, I sympathize with the OP on a lot of levels...who wants to be exposed to COVID and suffer like poor R18's husband because of a bunch of ignorant mouth breathers? Fuck that...I am waiting.

by Anonymousreply 23August 27, 2021 12:43 PM

Gyms are up there with used car dealerships and property management companies in terms of greedy and unscrupulous business practices, doesn't matter whether it's Equinox or Planet Fitness. They do not care about you and just want your money.

by Anonymousreply 24August 27, 2021 12:46 PM

I don't know what the law is in NYC but my gym now requires proof of vaccination for entry but masking is voluntary. I'm ok with that risk level as I believe the vaccinations at present work (statistically) very well against the Delta variant. So if most people in the gym go unmasked it doesn't bother me. However I mask up to protect myself more.

We are going to have to take some risks and make some compromises.

Too many of you Marys are Miss Holland.

Even if R24 is right about the motives of gym owners, they're not going to get your money if they let their members kill each other with germs.

by Anonymousreply 26August 27, 2021 12:54 PM

Still R24, if they are using that money to take a lot of extra measures and requiring masking I will pay. Also, I am willing to pay more if it means a cleaner gym and a better quality of clients (who mask up and aren't gonna be gross). Of course they are greedy...Equinox is hell and I wouldn't work for them but the product is good. My sister tried going to LA Fitness for awhile...got her locker broken into, NEVER enough towels, dirty showers and trainers who hit on her. I mean this stuff shouldn't really be a luxury tbh.

by Anonymousreply 27August 27, 2021 1:16 PM

Public gyms are filled with staph, sure they clean everything, they say, but it's still there. Just admit that you go to look at dick, that's if everyone is not lying about going in the first place. The average BMI on DL is probably over 35, so nothing but a bunch of big fat lying cunts. Stop the lying.

by Anonymousreply 28August 27, 2021 1:34 PM

R28 - actually, I am a top and have zero interest in dick. I also don't shower at the gym as it's 5 minutes from my home. Furthermore, in almost a decade, I have never gotten sick at that gym and I have met only one gay man who was even remotely my type there (mentioned above as nelly and older surgeon). They disinfect with a solution shown to be efficient even against MRSA. Do you know how I know that? My dad got MRSA in the ICU at a level A hospital in Northridge. MRSA also became a huge problem in early 2019 among service employees in many locales in an area where the median household income is $200K a year...a clean and swanky area. So, yes, there are those of us who don't only go "for dick" and do, actually, like exercise and community.

by Anonymousreply 29August 27, 2021 1:50 PM

I went in today and asked again about it, the person in charge was not there but I was told they do not have to comply since they are affiliated with a university. I canceled my membership, but I have to wait until tomorrow to speak with someone in charge about not being charged for the month of September. It sounds like a BS excuse to me, cases are rising here and every other gym in the area is requiring masks.

by Anonymousreply 30August 29, 2021 11:05 PM

R11 I wouldn’t even waste my time arguing with them. It’s obvious they are Trumpers so why would you want to support a gym like that anyway?

by Anonymousreply 31August 29, 2021 11:09 PM

Walk in with no bottom on, junk hanging out. Clearly it's clothing optional.

by Anonymousreply 32August 29, 2021 11:11 PM

First world problems, get over yourself.

by Anonymousreply 33August 29, 2021 11:11 PM

Op stfu!

by Anonymousreply 34August 29, 2021 11:13 PM

What a fucking baby. Find another gym that caters to your demented fears and shut up about it.

by Anonymousreply 35August 29, 2021 11:15 PM

Long covid causes Erectile Dysfunction -clotting up all those little veins in your dick.

Stay Away from heavy breathers who don't wear masks indoors.

That would be as bad as going back to a choir right now. Some idiot will pass the dick wilt on to every other guy.

by Anonymousreply 36August 29, 2021 11:22 PM

Our mayor issued a mask mandate for residents but not businesses. He wants us to wear masks but doesn’t want the onus if enforcement placed in businesses.

by Anonymousreply 37August 30, 2021 12:06 AM

I got vaccinated specifically to head back to the gym, this was before delta hit the US and filled up the ICU with covid patients.

The gym is the place to become infected with covid, mask or no mask.No gym for me until the infection is under control.

by Anonymousreply 38August 30, 2021 12:13 AM

At my gym, assholes wear FACE SHIELDS.

Face shields are allowed for the disabled who cannot breathe through a mask.

However, the men in face shields appear to have no disability except being cunts.

Fuck the mask as long as they stay far away from me.
