In twenty years of U.S. occupation, with all the money we poured into it and all the military and contractors and mercenaries and paid collaborators, Kabul was the only part of Afghanistan that was ever under our control. And the minute we lifted a finger to leave, the "government" we'd been keeping in place did a vanishing act. We were never serious about nation building and liberating women and all that crap. We were there so a few well-placed millionaires could become billionaires.

That’s because we hardly applied ourselves in Afghanistan, r7. Went in on the cheap in 2001 mostly using Afghan warlord factions as cannon fodder. Then sent relatively small numbers of occupying troops.
The us could have made more of a difference if it had basically dominated the government and sent a massive occupation force. It would have been a huge undertaking. For what? What is the vital us interest in that god forsaken country?
Would you be willing to join up and go over there and possibly get shot dead in order to turn Afghanistan into a western country? I mean, you do say WE after all.
The US absolutely did not invade Afghanistan to run a war racket. Why Afghanistan? Iraq? Yes. Afghanistan? No. We invaded because Bin Laden worked out of there. The country is worthless otherwise.

The Taliban is the government of Afghanistan now. This is their country to deal with. Almost all of our people have left. We're getting out of a lost cause.

The US did better in Afghanistan with a light occupation than the Soviets ever did with a massive intervention. So apples and oranges.

R19 Then why did you just suggest sending a huge occupation force?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 26, 2021 2:44 PM |

And the Taliban will not be able to govern now that it’s unifying force, resistance to the Americans, is gone. The “Taliban” is just a religious rebranding of the typical Afghan coalition of rival tribal forces. They will be at each other’s throats before too long.

Alexander the Great couldn't win in Afganistan. It's been the graveyard of empires for centuries. They'll be lots of time to assess if Biden acted correctly. We have to see how things deevelop there. Worse outcome , it becomes a haven for terrorists who attack the U.S. and US interests around the globe.

I don’t know if I buy the idea that the Chinese are going to get their hands on Afghanistan’s mineral wealth.
China generally requires broad concessions from any country in which the build infrastructure and I just don’t see the Taliban bowing to them, or anyone else. Particularly when you take into account the fact the the Chinese are currently holding Muslims in concentration camps not terribly far away from the Afghan border.

[quote] [R23] What do you think you're proving by asking that?
The US is not the Soviets. Afghanistan was the Soviet Vietnam because the soldiers were conscripts and poorly motivated. Each death echoed through society. The military was indoctrinated to fight the Americans and Chinese, not determined guerilla tribesmen.
The US military doctrine was quite effective at suppressing the Taliban. The doctrine abd troop training were right for the job. When we had significant forces there the Taliban were contained. More forces would have eradicated them.

We did not invade Afghanistan after 9/11 to go after bin Laden and Al Qaeda, we invaded to mollify the American people after 9/11 and simultaneously feed the military-industrial complex. As Obama showed 10 years later, we could get bin Laden and his organization through covert operations... but it's a hell of a lot cheaper to do it that way than to spend $1 trillion (at least), the majority of which is either in corrupt middle eastern hands or corrupt war profiteer's hands. Throwing more US military forces at a guerrilla warriors is not a prescription for success, it is a war profiteer's dream.

While this expedition is remembered mostly for establishing the Silk Road, the trade route linking China with the West, Zhang also shared his experience of the rivalries and conflicts that dominated the region; China’s engagement there was focused on trade, not conquest.

What did you think was going to happen? A 4th of July parade? The US has unsuccessfully fought in Afghanistan for almost 20 years. Dubya sent us over there to funnel trillion$ of give money to contractors, including his own family. 9/11 was a bunch of barely educated Saudi dupes committing a “Pearl Harbor type” situation in order to go into 2 countries unrelated to the bombers and extract oil & minerals by military contractors. Only 2016, only 25% of personnel on the ground were members of US military. 75% were military contractors using 70% foreign citizens as employees (mostly Afghanis). That’s what your taxes paid for. A drilling and min8ng scheme by contractors employing locals to extract wealth you’ll never get a piece of.
So of course Kabul will be transferred to someone else. We never fucking cared about the Taliban to begin with. We FOUNDED the Taliban in the 1980s to fight the USSR. Most Americans weren’t born or hadn’t emigrated to the US during the time Dan Rather went behind the lines with jihadis on 60 minutes. It was a huge thing watching Rather dressed in Afghan clothing

Four dead American troops confirmed by Pentagon, and others wounded.
Everyone knew that an ISIS-K attack was likely if not imminent.
Had evacuations been quietly begun months earlier, there would be far fewer people crowding the gates and inside the airport.
Exiting the foolhardy Afghan experiment was correct. The handling of the exit was abysmal.
Biden gets credit for calling an end to involvement in Afghanistant.
He also gets the blame for how hastily and tardily the evacuation took place. Those dead American troops are going to be very, very bad optics for him.

The right wing news has been trying to push the idea that the Taliban has "freed ISIS leaders" and they will now work together to come after the U.S., and I'm sad to say that MSNBC even had one of Bush Jr's old cronies on to spread that lie as well.

For now, R152, for now. History shows it takes about 20 years, or a single generation, for Americans to entirely forget how upset they were about the last futile, badly planned and astronomically expensive foreign adventure and clamor for a new one. Bin Laden knew that. He knew you spoiled, advantaged fuckers better than you know yourselves. A lot of the people screaming about the way this is being handled right now are the same people who were pinning American flags to their lapels and condemning anyone who was less then fully enthused for war in 2001 as anti-American when the truth is this (what's happening) was 100% predictable. Why? Because it's war, and because innocent people always die by the sewage ditch load in wars.
Cheering for war is cheering for the thing people now act like they're against. It's cheering for death and destruction. Sometimes it's necessary, but the discussion should always be a serious one, and war should only ever be the last resort. How blessed and also cursed the USA is to be generally insulated, by the luck of geography, from the material consequences of its actions.

Costs of the Afghanistan war, in lives and dollars
Hundreds of people run alongside a U.S. Air Force C-17 transport plane, some climbing on the plane, as it moves down a runway of the international airport, in Kabul, Afghanistan, Monday, Aug.16. 2021. Thousands of Afghans have rushed onto the tarmac at the airport, some so desperate to escape the Taliban capture of their country that they held onto the American military jet as it took off and plunged to death. Thousands of Afghans have rushed onto the tarmac at the airport, some so desperate to escape the Taliban capture of their country that they held onto the American military jet as it took off and plunged to death. (Verified UGC via AP)
At just short of 20 years, the now-ending U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan was America’s longest war. Ordinary Americans tended to forget about it, and it received measurably less oversight from Congress than the Vietnam War did. But its death toll is in the many tens of thousands. And because the U.S. borrowed most of the money to pay for it, generations of Americans will be burdened by the cost of paying it off.
Here’s a look at the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan, by the numbers, as the Taliban in a lightning offensive take over much of the country before the United States’ Aug. 31 deadline for ending its combat role and as the U.S. speeds up American and Afghan evacuations.
Much of the data below is from Linda Bilmes of Harvard University’s Kennedy School and from the Brown University Costs of War project. Because the United States between 2003 and 2011 fought the Afghanistan and Iraq wars simultaneously, and many American troops served tours in both wars, some figures as noted cover both post-9/11 U.S. wars.
THE LONGEST WAR:
Percentage of U.S. population born since the 2001 attacks plotted by al-Qaida leaders who were sheltering in Afghanistan: Roughly one out of every four.
THE HUMAN COST:
American service members killed in Afghanistan through April: 2,448.
U.S. contractors: 3,846.
Afghan national military and police: 66,000.
Other allied service members, including from other NATO member states: 1,144.
Afghan civilians: 47,245.
Taliban and other opposition fighters: 51,191.
Aid workers: 444.
Journalists: 72.

R226 Trump drew down US forces until there was less than half the number of Taliban fighters he had released from prison.
The Taliban promised a cease fire on the condition we LEAVE. They mostly kept their word. Meanwhile ISIL ratcheted up their attacks, leading to 105+ dead in Afghanistan in 2020 alone. The US continued its drawdown over the year so we had no ability to combat them, and the Taliban 5000 stronger continued making gains as they battled ISIL.
Biden pushed the May 1 deadline to improve the logistics around withdrawal. But absent another "surge" destined to go about as well as all the rest of them (meaning, poorly) he had to continue the withdrawal. There were not enough US forces left to combat a resurgence of Taliban aggression IN ADDITION TO ISIL. R240 R241 Lol the buildings of the Roman Empire are 3000 years old. They brought civilization and wonderful things in all the countries they conquered. This is not the case for the USA. A building that is only 100 years old is worthless in the rest of the world. But by the time you understand it... It's like thinking you can bring democracy to the Afghans, the Iraqis, the Syrians, the Vietnamese. The problem is that it was the Greeks who invented democracy. The copy is always poor quality, bitch.

It's not an absolute. You may be able to tell a sucide bombing is being planned, but no one can predict the exact place and time. They did say it was eminent and would be near the airport. They did warn Americans to stay away but that's about the best anyone can do. Better than a total surprise. You expect too much from intel if you think it will ever be an exact time and place before it happens.

Your acknowledgement of the fact that "war is messy" is glib af, R230. Yes, war *is* messy. And in the future perhaps Biden will be hailed as a genius for getting the US out of Afghanistan. I actually think it's quite likely. But that doesn't make the families of the dead, or the dead themselves, any less traumatized or any less dead. Your dismissive tone could only come from the kind of smug liberal asshat who doesn't actually believe in or live any kind of actual left-of-center philosophy. Your country went into Afghanistan, and the blood of the terrible mishandling of this pullout is on your country's - and your (current and former) president's - hands.
12 dead Americans, many more dead Afghans TODAY ALONE and what has the left got, because this happened under a Democrat president and not Trump? "War is messy." Fuck off. One hopes you would be as certain of your own moral righteousness if someone *you* loved was killed today, but everyone knows you wouldn't be.
War is messy, but that's not even close to an excuse for how this has been handled. It's not actually an excuse for anything, it's just happens to be true.
I'm gonna get called a Boris or a Trumper for this but I have never, in ~20 years of voting, ever voted right of center. Not once. Borises and Trumpers make clowns of the right, but the left isn't much better, huffing the fart-smell of their own superiority as the fucking world burns.

I don't think they were actually r313. I don't think Egypt was a slave society, despite all the movies. The Roman Empire was, and I think the Greeks loved having a lot of slaves as well. I don't doubt there were slaves in Egypt, but I don't think they were a big part of the picture. I think a lot of that is bullshit invented in the Bible.
In ancient Rome, in contrast, slaves pretty much did all the mining, worked a lot of the big estates, and pretty much everyone of any wealth had household slaves.
In Egypt, most of the work was done by peasants, including building the pyramids and the other big monuments.

Also too, while I'm handing out little factoids, it is a depressing fact that in ancient Sumerian, the first written language as far as we know, the most common word in the various records we have is the word for "foreign female slave." So yeah, slavery goes WAYYYYYY back, but I still think there is a difference between societies built around slavery, like the old American South, and societies where some people have a few slaves.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | August 26, 2021 11:43 PM |

No r324, slaves did not build the pyramids. It's pretty clear that they were built by Egyptian peasants. Not volunteers. Paid. Paid by the government to build them during the season when they did not have to plant and sow and reap. You really can't get all your history from Cecil b Demille movies, and certainly not from the Bible. You have to look harder and wider.

Actually there is some historical evidence that the term slave was not the same back then. They were more like worker groups competing with each other. The archeologist now think this based on some graffiti left inside the pyramids that are thousand of years old. Basically leaving a hidden record of which gang as they refereed to themselves was doing the best job.

John Kerry was right.
During his run for the US Presidency in 2004, he gave an interview to the NY Times Magazine where he stated (I'm paraphrasing) that conventional, ground troops warfare needed to be re-assessed for its efficacy, or lack thereof, in capturing terrorists.
He stated international police action (informants, surveillance, etc.) should be deployed.
This is how fucking damn stupid us Americans can be -
Bush and Cheney seized on that. Yes, two chicken-shit draft dodgers, renowned for bravery on the golf course or sitting at a Texas Rangers game, managed to turn Kerry, a combat veteran, into a "soft on terrorism" wimp.
And dumber than a 10lb bag of powdered cement Americans bought that and gave Bush another term.
John Kerry was right. And Americans are stupid.
Bring back the compulsory military draft, all genders, no exceptions, no deferments. And the first pool of draftees should be drawn from the 1% and the families of anybody who makes money from the military-industrial complex.

r361 you are 100% correct. I'm American, and I can't believe how ignorant many Americans are about the rest of the world and other cultures. A ground war was foolish in that region, and in that culture.
And oh yes if there was a draft Americans would think long and hard about military action anywhere. It would have to take something on the level of another Japan/Hitler to get Americans to deploy a military operation if a draft was involved.

What I love about pepper who talk about primitive shitholes is they are the same ones who say immigrants from said shitholes need to be accepted on mass because suddenly they have developed into wonderful caring potential Westerners when they try to get into your country.

Quick fact, please check Google to confirm, but when discussing everyone from Alexander the Great to present day failed in Afghanistan, this is only partly true.
Alexander the Great lost huge amounts of men in Afghanistan and had serious battles there, but he did establish bases and there are still cities named after him in Afghanistan. Kandahar is one that comes to mind. Alexander was pretty successful there, in the short term. It was the numbers killed, that is why we discuss it as disastrous.

Army service is compulsory for EVERYONE in Israel, 3 years for men, 18 months approximately for women. Married women are exempt from service. Students can delay service for several years. Only sons can opt out of service. Druze, Beduin and other "Arab-Israelis" serve depending on factors such as clan and village. The "ultra Orthodox" also serve. People with medical issues that do not prevent them from minimum participation also serve.

Very true, r197. The reason the right wing media has been pushing the "Taliban = ISIS" thing so hard is because they knew there would be a very good chance that ISIS would lash out, because that's what ISIS does. Now the media has already primed people to think that this suicide bomber attack was related to the Taliban, and that it's Biden's fault because he "let the Taliban take over."

I really don't understand why there is so much resistance to assigning blame for this, especially as this wouldn't be the first time in history that the military fucked up, got it wrong, and gave bad advice to a leader.
The military got this wrong and people are paying with their lives, and more will pay with more lives back in Afghanistan.
This isn't about party affiliation, or hating Joe Biden or loving Trump or hating Trump therefore one must love Biden . . .
What's depressing, apart from the appalling waste of funds that could be used for better things in both countries, and the lives, is watching those generals and chiefs of staff and Foreign Secretaries and PMs all doing their best to keep the side up and getting away with it and looking calm and important and competent, but whose side is the side, really?
Because it's not the grunts' side, or the taxpayers' side, that's bloody certain.

The mission is to withdraw from a 20 yr war and evacuate Americans and some Afghans. Keeping in mind that 2,000+ service people have been killed over the course of the war and Afghanistan is one of the most unstable and dangerous nations in the world. Which is why we are finally leaving. The problem is that the mission and success are being defined as a fairytale exit of certainty; where everything goes exactly according to plan (or contingency plan) and there are no casualties. While exiting a war that has produced thousands of ongoing casualties. The problem is that people cant distinguish reality from what they watch on television. The problem is that people believe that watching a week of cable news gives them some level of expertise and they now have the ability to perform the miracles that rooms full of experts cannot.

by Anonymous | reply 387 | August 27, 2021 5:36 PM |
R387: Biden has no problem undoing other bad choices left by Trump, e.g halt the construction of the wall, cutting the Blackstone pipeline, rejoining the Paris Treaty and WHO etc etc.
So why didn’t Joe undo this deal with the Taliban and renegotiate?
Why does he act as if this one deal were cast in stone?
by Anonymous | reply 388 | August 27, 2021 5:49 PM |
r387, Trump actually created a withdrawal plan, had a team set up to enact it and had a deadline negotiated. Biden threw ALL of that away in March and replaced it with NOTHING! Biden did that. No one else.

[quote]Trump actually created a withdrawal plan
Was it in the same binder as his healthcare plan?
by Anonymous | reply 390 | August 27, 2021 5:52 PM |
Biden's withdrawal had zero to do do with the Trump plan. They blew past the negotiated deadline in May, and from that point there was nothing left of the Trump plan.
Biden administration people drew up a new plan entirely, and Biden's close advisors were very involved with finalizing all military decisions (this is consistent with the way the Obama WH was run: Valerie Jarrett was nicknamed "General Jarrett" at the Pentagon because all military movements were finalized with her.)
Bidenbots, iyou really believe that Biden did a terrific job with this, then why do you also insist on lying and claiming his hands were tied by the Trump plan, when the opposite is true? Why not just own that this is your hero's plan and crow about what a great plan it is?
by Anonymous | reply 391 | August 27, 2021 6:02 PM |
Upon entering office, Biden was left with <2500 troops in Afghanistan. Less than half the number of Taliban Trump had released from prison the year prior. The only thing preventing them from being totally overrun was a shaky ceasfire with the Taliban premised on the rest of those troops leaving for good. No such ceasefire existed with ISIL, so they were just going on with their attacks as usual.
Absent another destined-to-fail surge, which no one but the war profiteers wanted, Biden had no means of a clean withdrawal. None of you Borises or trolls can argue around that fact, so you just keep tossing out any nonsense you can come up with.
by Anonymous | reply 392 | August 27, 2021 6:12 PM |
Here’s an idea. If you’re not willing to die for your country, don’t enlist in the military.
I would have loved to have my education paid for and receive a stipend from the military, but it wasn’t worth my life or my conscience (if I had to kill people) so I didn’t sign up. It’s a tragedy that soldiers died, but it’s a known job hazard.
I’m just glad we are out of there and save some tax dollars. Unfortunately that money is going to go into politician’s investment portfolios and pay for people to sit at home and not work.
