Can we talk about how terrible 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is?
I don't even know where to begin: the overlong screen time, unmemorable songs by Sherman bros, Sally Ann Howes (a.k.a. poor man's Julie Andrews) in a role that was obviously meant for Dame Julie herself...They should have kept just the Vulgarian scenes and get rid of the entire outer story.
Fun fact: Dick Van Dyke was older than Lionel Jeffries, who played his father, was.

It takes too long to get to the magical car and fantasyland parts, but once it does, it's good.

The Vulgaria scenes were THE best part of the movie.

OP: Fun Fact- On the Golden Girls Beatrice Arthur was older than Estelle Getty who played her mother.

I love this movie and you are just a cynical old cunt Op. Maybe you were a cynical young cunt as a child.

The second best part of the movie was the HOMOSEXUAL child catcher.

Earl Hamner, creator of The Waltons, wrote the Chitty screenplay. I visited the Hamner House/Waltons Mountain Museum in Schuyler, Virgjnia, last week. Earl also created DL fave Falcon Crest and wrote many of the original Twilight Zone episodes.

I agree that the movie takes way too long to get going, but that music box number haunts me. As does toot sweet to a lesser degree. And the child catcher is genuinely creepy.

The child-catcher scarred me for life.

There are few optical scenes that are bad but it's a lovely family movie.

R6, where did you get that info? Wikipedia and IMDb credit the script to Roald Dahl, Ken Hughes, and Richard Maibaum.

R6, where did you get that weird bit of misinformation? Here are the credits for the CHITTY screenplay: Ian Fleming (novel), Roald Dahl (screenplay by), Ken Hughes (screenplay by) , Richard Maibaum (additional dialogue by) .
OP, you're ridiculous. The truth is that some of the movie is indeed bad -- I'm thinking of those tedious, unfunny scenes with the spies -- and it is a bit overlong, but there are many wonderful moments in it.

Fun fact: It was based on a story written by Ian Fleming.
(i expect everyone knows this, but I only found out recently).
I quite like some of the music. Very hummable.

Strangely, the child catcher never scared me as a kid. I think he was so OTT creepy that I couldn't take him seriously.

Earl Hamner wrote the first screenplay for the film. Google it. In any case, I know what I saw/read in the Waltons museum! š

R9- Who was scarier? The Child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or The Wicked Witch Of The West in The Wizard Of Oz

[quote] Earl Hamner, Jr. had finished a script by 12 Dec 1965, as noted in that dayās NYT; however, he was replaced by childrenās author Roald Dahl the following year.

It's mediocre to be sure and I also stopped watching after that godawful "Toots Sweets" number. An embarrassingly bad song. Then there is Van Dyke's number that is an obvious regurgitation of "Step In Time" from Mary Poppins.
The score sounded like Poppins throwaways for the most part.
The Vulgaria portion was better, though too broadly acted, except for the Child Catcher.
One saving grace was that Dick Van Dyke didn't attempt an English accent after his dreadful cockney accent in Poppins.

r20, You do know it was a film for children and we all enjoyed it as such. No 8 year old is going "well toot sweet is a bit poor, but his accent is a lot better in this movie" It's just good memories.

Which makes the fact his father and children had them all the more strange.

During her teenage years, Lady Diana Spencer used to hate having to go to the BRF's nearby Sandringham estate for Christmas to see the film the Queen and Prince Philip showed the local children as a supposed treat (this was in the days before VCRs), because year after year it was always "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

Even if Sally Ann Howes is the poor man's Julie Andrews, at least she's both prettier and a better singer than Angela Lansbury in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks."
Let's face it: no one can touch the hem of our Dame Julie.

Fyi, the Vulgarian scenes are meant to be just a depiction of a story that DVD is telling and so didnāt really happen. The scenes before and after are what really happened.
