Can we talk about how terrible 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is?

I don't even know where to begin: the overlong screen time, unmemorable songs by Sherman bros, Sally Ann Howes (a.k.a. poor man's Julie Andrews) in a role that was obviously meant for Dame Julie herself...They should have kept just the Vulgarian scenes and get rid of the entire outer story.

Fun fact: Dick Van Dyke was older than Lionel Jeffries, who played his father, was.

by Anonymousreply 50August 26, 2021 3:52 AM

It takes too long to get to the magical car and fantasyland parts, but once it does, it's good.

by Anonymousreply 1August 26, 2021 12:51 AM

The Vulgaria scenes were THE best part of the movie.

by Anonymousreply 2August 26, 2021 12:52 AM

OP: Fun Fact- On the Golden Girls Beatrice Arthur was older than Estelle Getty who played her mother.

by Anonymousreply 3August 26, 2021 12:53 AM

I love this movie and you are just a cynical old cunt Op. Maybe you were a cynical young cunt as a child.

by Anonymousreply 4August 26, 2021 12:54 AM

The second best part of the movie was the HOMOSEXUAL child catcher.

by Anonymousreply 5August 26, 2021 12:54 AM

Earl Hamner, creator of The Waltons, wrote the Chitty screenplay. I visited the Hamner House/Waltons Mountain Museum in Schuyler, Virgjnia, last week. Earl also created DL fave Falcon Crest and wrote many of the original Twilight Zone episodes.

by Anonymousreply 6August 26, 2021 12:55 AM

No OP you can never take this away from me . I love this.

I agree that the movie takes way too long to get going, but that music box number haunts me. As does toot sweet to a lesser degree. And the child catcher is genuinely creepy.

by Anonymousreply 8August 26, 2021 12:58 AM

The child-catcher scarred me for life.

by Anonymousreply 9August 26, 2021 12:59 AM

There are few optical scenes that are bad but it's a lovely family movie.

R6, where did you get that info? Wikipedia and IMDb credit the script to Roald Dahl, Ken Hughes, and Richard Maibaum.

by Anonymousreply 11August 26, 2021 1:01 AM

R6, where did you get that weird bit of misinformation? Here are the credits for the CHITTY screenplay: Ian Fleming (novel), Roald Dahl (screenplay by), Ken Hughes (screenplay by) , Richard Maibaum (additional dialogue by) .

OP, you're ridiculous. The truth is that some of the movie is indeed bad -- I'm thinking of those tedious, unfunny scenes with the spies -- and it is a bit overlong, but there are many wonderful moments in it.

by Anonymousreply 12August 26, 2021 1:01 AM

Fun fact: It was based on a story written by Ian Fleming.

(i expect everyone knows this, but I only found out recently).

I quite like some of the music. Very hummable.

by Anonymousreply 13August 26, 2021 1:01 AM

always referred to it as Chitty Chitty Gang Bang

We were easily amused back then.

by Anonymousreply 14August 26, 2021 1:06 AM

It's a great movie.

by Anonymousreply 15August 26, 2021 1:07 AM

Strangely, the child catcher never scared me as a kid. I think he was so OTT creepy that I couldn't take him seriously.

by Anonymousreply 16August 26, 2021 1:08 AM

Earl Hamner wrote the first screenplay for the film. Google it. In any case, I know what I saw/read in the Waltons museum! šŸ˜

R9- Who was scarier? The Child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or The Wicked Witch Of The West in The Wizard Of Oz

by Anonymousreply 18August 26, 2021 1:10 AM

[quote] Earl Hamner, Jr. had finished a script by 12 Dec 1965, as noted in that day’s NYT; however, he was replaced by children’s author Roald Dahl the following year.

It's mediocre to be sure and I also stopped watching after that godawful "Toots Sweets" number. An embarrassingly bad song. Then there is Van Dyke's number that is an obvious regurgitation of "Step In Time" from Mary Poppins.

The score sounded like Poppins throwaways for the most part.

The Vulgaria portion was better, though too broadly acted, except for the Child Catcher.

One saving grace was that Dick Van Dyke didn't attempt an English accent after his dreadful cockney accent in Poppins.

by Anonymousreply 20August 26, 2021 1:13 AM

To this day I still sing this, and Im 60 .

by Anonymousreply 21August 26, 2021 1:15 AM

Correction: I almost stopped watching..

r20, You do know it was a film for children and we all enjoyed it as such. No 8 year old is going "well toot sweet is a bit poor, but his accent is a lot better in this movie" It's just good memories.

by Anonymousreply 25August 26, 2021 1:29 AM

[quote]One saving grace was that Dick Van Dyke didn't attempt an English accent after his dreadful cockney accent in Poppins.

Which makes the fact his father and children had them all the more strange.

by Anonymousreply 26August 26, 2021 1:38 AM

I think the "Toot Sweets" number is a highlight, and I think there are several wonderful songs in the movie and not one clinker.

by Anonymousreply 27August 26, 2021 1:40 AM

Haaaaaate this movie. ā€œMary Poppinsā€ is far superior.

by Anonymousreply 28August 26, 2021 1:47 AM

Except for DVD being the male lead, comparing CCBB to MP is apples and oranges.

by Anonymousreply 29August 26, 2021 1:51 AM

This is a CLASSIC, OP.

To quote Nomi from Showgirls:

"You don't know SHIT!!!"

by Anonymousreply 30August 26, 2021 1:54 AM

Anscher thread

He loves Bedknobs and Broomsticks and ergo hates CCBB.

by Anonymousreply 31August 26, 2021 1:59 AM

During her teenage years, Lady Diana Spencer used to hate having to go to the BRF's nearby Sandringham estate for Christmas to see the film the Queen and Prince Philip showed the local children as a supposed treat (this was in the days before VCRs), because year after year it was always "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

by Anonymousreply 32August 26, 2021 2:03 AM

Even as a child, I hated this movie.

by Anonymousreply 33August 26, 2021 2:06 AM

Even if Sally Ann Howes is the poor man's Julie Andrews, at least she's both prettier and a better singer than Angela Lansbury in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks."

Let's face it: no one can touch the hem of our Dame Julie.

I saw this with my class when it came out. We all loved it. I still love it. Also, the Sherman Brothers’ music has some cracking songs.

Pip pip.

by Anonymousreply 36August 26, 2021 2:16 AM

[quote]at least she's both prettier and a better singer than Angela Lansbury in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks."

How would you like to be turned into a nice white rabbit?

by Anonymousreply 37August 26, 2021 2:19 AM

When the movie came out, my mother called it "Shitty Shitty Bang Bang," so we never got to see it.

by Anonymousreply 38August 26, 2021 2:21 AM

Come on OP....how could you hate this...

Can we talk about a woman being named Truly Scrumptious?

by Anonymousreply 40August 26, 2021 2:45 AM

Chitty Chitty was no Pete's Dragon!

by Anonymousreply 41August 26, 2021 2:52 AM

I used to work in a dirty bookstore and there was an actual book called TITTY TITTY GANG BANG.

by Anonymousreply 42August 26, 2021 2:58 AM

Shitty Shitty Gang Bang is right. This movie sucked.

by Anonymousreply 43August 26, 2021 3:11 AM

I love this movie and I love Mary Poppins.

I HATE Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

by Anonymousreply 44August 26, 2021 3:15 AM

Preach it r44

[quote] Can we talk about a woman being named Truly Scrumptious?

The name Pussy Galore was already taken.

by Anonymousreply 46August 26, 2021 3:31 AM

Fyi, the Vulgarian scenes are meant to be just a depiction of a story that DVD is telling and so didn’t really happen. The scenes before and after are what really happened.

by Anonymousreply 47August 26, 2021 3:34 AM

I like grandpa’s refurbished outhouse.

by Anonymousreply 48August 26, 2021 3:41 AM

I prefer Pussy Scrumptious.

by Anonymousreply 49August 26, 2021 3:43 AM

[quote] Can we talk about a woman being named Truly Scrumptious?

[quote] The name Pussy Galore was already taken.

Both were created by the same writer, Ian Fleming.
