Can we talk about how terrible 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is?

It takes too long to get to the magical car and fantasyland parts, but once it does, it's good.

The Vulgaria scenes were THE best part of the movie.

The second best part of the movie was the HOMOSEXUAL child catcher.

Earl Hamner, creator of The Waltons, wrote the Chitty screenplay. I visited the Hamner House/Waltons Mountain Museum in Schuyler, Virgjnia, last week. Earl also created DL fave Falcon Crest and wrote many of the original Twilight Zone episodes.

I agree that the movie takes way too long to get going, but that music box number haunts me. As does toot sweet to a lesser degree. And the child catcher is genuinely creepy.

There are few optical scenes that are bad but it's a lovely family movie.

OP, you're ridiculous. The truth is that some of the movie is indeed bad -- I'm thinking of those tedious, unfunny scenes with the spies -- and it is a bit overlong, but there are many wonderful moments in it.

Fun fact: It was based on a story written by Ian Fleming.

Strangely, the child catcher never scared me as a kid. I think he was so OTT creepy that I couldn't take him seriously.

It's mediocre to be sure and I also stopped watching after that godawful "Toots Sweets" number. An embarrassingly bad song. Then there is Van Dyke's number that is an obvious regurgitation of "Step In Time" from Mary Poppins.

The score sounded like Poppins throwaways for the most part.

r20, You do know it was a film for children and we all enjoyed it as such. No 8 year old is going "well toot sweet is a bit poor, but his accent is a lot better in this movie" It's just good memories.

I think the "Toot Sweets" number is a highlight, and I think there are several wonderful songs in the movie and not one clinker.

Haaaaaate this movie. “Mary Poppins” is far superior.

Except for DVD being the male lead, comparing CCBB to MP is apples and oranges.

During her teenage years, Lady Diana Spencer used to hate having to go to the BRF's nearby Sandringham estate for Christmas to see the film the Queen and Prince Philip showed the local children as a supposed treat (this was in the days before VCRs), because year after year it was always "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

Even as a child, I hated this movie.

Even if Sally Ann Howes is the poor man's Julie Andrews, at least she's both prettier and a better singer than Angela Lansbury in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks."

Let's face it: no one can touch the hem of our Dame Julie.

I saw this with my class when it came out. We all loved it. I still love it. Also, the Sherman Brothers’ music has some cracking songs.
