by Anonymousreply 5August 24, 2021 9:20 PM

I prefer Gloria Estefan.

Carly Simon never got to sing a theme song for an Olympic Games. Summer games, too!

by Anonymousreply 6August 24, 2021 9:23 PM

She asked me about the assassination!

by Anonymousreply 7August 24, 2021 9:25 PM

Why is it that James Taylor won't have her in his house (even at a family event for their kids) and people who are wise don't ever mention her name around him? They divorced but why is he filled with such rancor towards her? I understand he tried to have an amicable relationship with her for years but it was a huge failure.

What's the story?

When I was a lonely college gayling in the late 80s every night I would get into bed and listen to the cassette of Coming Around Again on my Walkman.

by Anonymousreply 13August 25, 2021 4:50 PM

I asked my two doggies if they were enjoying my Carly playlist and they replied “we like whatever you like”. They’re two sweeties.

by Anonymousreply 14August 25, 2021 7:27 PM

A little of her goes a long way in my book. I like a lot of the songs listed in this thread, but hate just about anything that’s not a hit. That voice can be like nails on a blackboard.

by Anonymousreply 15August 25, 2021 7:45 PM

I love Spoiled Girl!

Spoiled girl livin’ in her own world! Spoiled Girl thinks of no one but herself.

by Anonymousreply 16August 27, 2021 11:44 PM

I am with you, OP. As a kid, I had the cassette single of Let the River Run and the B side was Coming Around Again / Itsy Bitsy Spider (live). You just can’t get gayer than a 12 year old playing that in his Walkman in 1988. Her live album from ‘88 might be my favorite live album of all time. The deeper cuts off that album are the standouts for me (Do the Walls Come Down, It Happens Everyday, All I Want is You, Never Been Gone). She was such a talent.

OP - I met her several times when I lived in the West Village (her townhouse was next door to my job), and she was always very friendly, down to earth, and nice. I imagine that can't be easy for someone who is reportedly extremely shy, and has had to deal with fame's drawbacks for decades.

Just thought you'd like to know, to me, she was good people. Really wasn't a fan, but have liked her more since.

by Anonymousreply 23August 28, 2021 12:00 AM

I really liked her second (Anticipation) and third (No Secrets) albums. Possibly my favorite song by her is a rather obscure number of hers from her second album, 'Three Days." It really is a beautiful song.

by Anonymousreply 24August 28, 2021 12:16 AM

"Waiting at the Gate" almost makes me want to fall madly in love with a recovering addict so that I can sing it as he comes out of rehab. Although considering my terrible voice, he'd probably run back inside.

by Anonymousreply 30August 28, 2021 7:25 PM

R20, Pretty Girls was a song first written and recorded by Lisa Dabello in 1978 then covered by Melissa Manchester in 1979 and was a moderate Top 40 hit for her. Carly never covered that song.

Love Carly! Lots of favorites already mentioned but I’ll add:

Take Me As I Am (from Come Upstairs)

If It Wasn’t Love (Coming Around Again era B-side; it’s included on the deluxe 30th anniversary CD reissue from a few years ago)

R44 do u love the Spoiled Girl re-issue on the Cherry Red Hot Shot label that came out several yrs ago?. I have to admit I am a huge fan of SG. It was the album that made me Carly fan as a kid back in the summer of 1985. This was solidified by Coming Around Again in early 1987. I bought the cassette when it was first released and was enchanted and bewitched by her music and songwriting.

by Anonymousreply 46August 28, 2021 11:22 PM

R27 That song was used in a late 80's Italian Ice cream commercial.

by Anonymousreply 48August 29, 2021 12:07 AM

She did a standards album, where she does a wonderful cover of "In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning".

So her biggest hits were You're So Vain, Nobody Does It Better and Mockingbird?

by Anonymousreply 49August 29, 2021 12:35 AM

Carly has five albums of standards, r49: Torch, Film Noir, My Romance, Moonlight Serenade, and Into White (some more modern classics).

Torch is best known for Carly’s version of “I Get Along without You Very Well.”

“In the Wee, Small Hours” is on My Romance.

Film Noir faves are "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," "Lili Marlene," and "Last Night When We Were Young."

I love Moonlight Sonata from first note to last.

There’s an especially nice version of “Oh, Susanna” on Into White, as well as a better version of “Into White” than Cat Stevens’ own.

OP, I do have and love that reissue of Spoiled Girl. I was thrilled to get the remixes of My New Boyfriend on CD. Back in the early 90s I found a record store selling off an ex-DJ collection for a buck a 12” and they had My New Boyfriend. At the time I had no idea there were club mixes for any Carly songs. I’m bummed they didn’t do any for Tired of Being Blonde. Even an extended version of the album mix would be good. If I were more ambitious I’d learn some remixing programs and make my own.

Spoiled Girl was the first Carly album I bought as a teenager (on cassette.) My parents had a few of her 70s albums but I was more interested in her newer stuff. Jesse was the song that got me hooked. I heard it during a school trip several years after it had been a hit and just loved it. Little gayby jamming out at the back of the school bus. I’d love for Cherry Red or some label to do a deluxe edition of Come Upstairs. There’s a pretty rare remix of the title track I’d love to have in good quality.

Carly Simon was once considered this big sex symbol. James Taylor called her, back in the days when he didn't hate her, "a piece of ass." But looking back it's obvious to me that she was really not all that. I guess she was tall and had long legs but her face...meh. In a bio about Simon, Joni Mitchell and Carole King called "Girls LIke Us" the author recounts how somebody commented that the Simon sisters were beautiful...except Carly. But she was considered this hot piece, anyway. In a puff piece the Rolling Stone did about her (it gushed she was "commandingly attractive, openly intelligent and enormously talented") she stated "I feel that being attractive sexually is not something which I feel guilty about or embarrassed by in any way. I feel that it’s great, and when I stop attracting people sexually then I’ll probably become a cook… or something” I don't think anybody "openly intelligent" would have said anything as stupid as that.

by Anonymousreply 64September 2, 2021 1:25 AM

She gives excellent head.

by Anonymousreply 65September 2, 2021 2:05 AM

by Anonymousreply 68November 16, 2021 3:29 PM

I recently finished her memoir about her friendship with Jackie O and I understand the Kennedy family was outraged by the book. I thought the book was affectionate and respectful and wonder what the kerfuffle was about. Anyone know more? In YouTube videos posted in recent years, Carly Simon looks frail and far older than her years. Cancer, osteoporosis, etc. Aging sucks.

by Anonymousreply 69November 16, 2021 3:40 PM

OP "coming around again" MUST be on your playlist. What is this nonsense???

My mom was a huge Simon fan and we spent many afternoons listening to her albums while puttering around the house. The amount of time I spent staring at the cover of "Playing Possum" probably should've alerted someone to my nascent lesbianism.

"Coming Around Again" came out when I was in preschool and remains the ultimate musical comfort food, right down to Stevie Wonder's harmonica solo in "As Time Goes By." This thread just spurred me to download "Greatest Hits Live," so thank you.

by Anonymousreply 75November 16, 2021 4:32 PM

My mom saw a poster I had of Carly up on my bedroom wall when I was around 13 yrs old. It was from the album photo shoot for Coming Around Again. Carly is seated on the floor (wearing a dress) with her legs spread. My mom didn’t care for the poster because she was attempting to flash her pussy.

by Anonymousreply 84November 18, 2021 6:12 AM

She had a relationship with gay John Travolta. I wonder if she wrote any songs about THAT?

by Anonymousreply 85November 18, 2021 4:23 PM

That Minnie Riperton song is absolutely majestic, why it was not a huge hit I’ll never understand. “Loving you” was cute but nothing like this.

As for Carly, her voice is utterly distinctive, which for me is the number one criteria in assessing any popular singer.

by Anonymousreply 86November 18, 2021 4:40 PM

That Minnie Riperton song is from her "Come To My Garden" album, which is now considered a masterpiece. She was so much more than "Loving You."

by Anonymousreply 100June 1, 2022 2:18 AM

So does Carly Simon, OP. I tried to read her book, but the narcissism was just too much to take. There was one long passage about how she did her hair as a teenager. Who even remembers that?

by Anonymousreply 101June 1, 2022 2:54 AM

the opening annecdote in Fredric Dannen’s 1990 book, ‘“Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business," was the payola involving Carly Simon's single Jesse from her WB debut, Come Upstaris 1980. He laughingly remembers it reached number 11 on the billboard chart......and how nobody ever had heard of it, could sing it.....etc....
