Netflix’s ‘Wild Wild Country’ is One of the Best Documentaries Ever Made

I’d never heard about the Bhagwan or his Rajneesh movement. They came to the US from India in the 80’s and bought a whole Oregon town to create a utopia. It’s right up there with OJ: Made in America.

The Bhagwan. Oh, yeah.

Talk to the eldergays for the inside info on all of that.

by Anonymousreply 1August 24, 2021 12:10 AM

Aren’t they doing a sequel on Ma Anand Sheela? To me she was the best part of the doc!

by Anonymousreply 2August 24, 2021 12:19 AM

What would be the point of a sequel, R2? I think it already reached a satisfying conclusion. And yes, her part certainly helps make for such a fascinating tale.

by Anonymousreply 3August 24, 2021 12:34 AM

Yes. And it was last year when we talked about it then too.

by Anonymousreply 4August 24, 2021 1:31 AM

Don’t come in here with that shit, R4.

by Anonymousreply 5August 24, 2021 1:52 AM

I tried watching it. Like all Netflix documentaries, it was too long and unfocused. If it had been pared down to 2 hours, it would have been ok. The OJ documentary was also underwhelming. Truly great long documentaries are "The World at War" or "The Jinx." This was just blah.

by Anonymousreply 6August 24, 2021 1:55 AM

R6 you’re nuts. You can’t tell this story, not OJ’s, in two friggin hours.

by Anonymousreply 7August 24, 2021 2:55 AM

I really enjoyed it too. Always looking for good docs to watch. Peacock channel is adding some good ones too.

by Anonymousreply 8August 24, 2021 3:14 AM

[QUOTE] You can’t tell this story, nor OJ’s, in two friggin hours.*

Started slow for me and I kept think why is this worth a six part docuseries? Then it gets good. I had never heard the song "Run" before so I'll always be grateful to the show for introducing me to it.

I just finished episode 2 of The Sons of Sam. Interesting for anyone who likes serial killers, true crime, and conspiracies.

by Anonymousreply 10August 24, 2021 3:22 AM

The Duplass brothers are geniuses.

by Anonymousreply 11August 24, 2021 3:25 AM

Love this documentary. I think I’ve watched it 3 times.

by Anonymousreply 12August 24, 2021 3:35 AM

Is this the one with Owen Wilson?

by Anonymousreply 13August 24, 2021 3:47 AM

No it isn’t, R13.

Christ, I could agree more.

by Anonymousreply 15August 24, 2021 3:54 AM

^^^ COULDN’T

by Anonymousreply 16August 24, 2021 3:55 AM

As much as I loved it (and I did) the real events just didn’t have a great ending so I think the documentary suffers from that as well. You really want this neatly packaged ending, but real life didn’t work that way.

by Anonymousreply 17August 24, 2021 11:38 AM

Started watching and just sort of fizzled out on it. It was good, but I can’t agree that it’s one of the best documentaries evarrrr.

by Anonymousreply 18August 24, 2021 11:52 AM

Name a documentary that’s better, R18.

by Anonymousreply 19August 24, 2021 10:44 PM

R19 - to name just a few...

DEAR ZACHARY

CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS

MAKING A MURDERER

I liked WILD WILD WEST, but it was not the best documentary EVAH.

by Anonymousreply 20August 24, 2021 10:47 PM

I'll go too:

The Act of Killing/The Look of Silence

Harland County, USA

Hoop Dreams

Sans Soleil

Los Angeles Plays Itself

by Anonymousreply 21August 25, 2021 4:45 AM

R19,

“Grey Gardens” “Capturing the Friedmans” “Tabloid” “The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia”

I’m not saying it’s not a good documentary, I just didn’t find it intriguing. Documenting something that’s innately extraordinary doesn’t have the same impact on me that documenting something that’s seemingly ordinary (but isn’t).

by Anonymousreply 22August 25, 2021 11:24 AM

Grey Gardens, An American Family, and The Imposter

by Anonymousreply 23August 25, 2021 12:14 PM

Life and Times of Harvey Milk

by Anonymousreply 24August 25, 2021 1:20 PM

BEFORE STONEWALL

It should be REQUIRED viewing for all the proponents of Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson.
