Before the pandemic, I knew of several people who trash welfare, food stamps/EBT, and other assistance programs and the people on those programs . They would make comments about those people looking for handouts and that they should just get a job blah blah. Then you get the fundraisers for people in their 40s, 50s, or a bit older begging for money for household bills, support for the spouse, family, etc.

I came across this fundraiser where the guy died of covid at age 47. The intro piece mentions how the guy and his wife wouldn't take handouts and believed "God will provide" , The intro piece states that the guy and his wife were married 29 years and that he was the breadwinner so the wife could "work with the church". They had a 20k goal, but have raised 65k. The two sons are grown and married, i wonder if the wife be taking most of the money. If this couple was so opposed to taking handouts, why weren't they socking away some money in savings all these years to avoid taking help when things got rough?

The people I actually feel bad for are those who got the vaccine and tried to get their family members vaccinated, but they refused and died from Covid.

In the late 90s a family friend, a guy who attended college with my parents was diagnosed with brain cancer. He was an engineer and his wife was a social worker. Insurance didn't cover all costs related to treatments and two brain surgeries he had. The wife mentioned there was a major dent to their finances and one point she took a leave of absence to care for him. He died three years later after initial diagnosis. My parents and other friends would help with money and groceries to help out the wife and kids and she always appreciated it and was asking how she could help us in return. After he died she continued on with her social work career to help support her kids in addition to survivor's SS for several years. Yeah, some illnesses like cancer, ALS, MS can be hard to predict and may come out of the blue. But, geez now with fucking covid there's a fucking vaccine that at least prevents serious illness or possibly death. I could probably sympathize a bit more with some household in which the breadwinner got cancer or some other major illness not related to covid. The covid anti-vax idiots are hard to sympathize with.
