Joseph Fiennes in Shakespeare in Love
Bear with me -- I just watched SiL for the first time in years. I was struck by the lovely score, the amazing costumes, the wonderful cast -- but especially two scenes in which Fiennes is the center. The first is when Shakespeare believes he is responsible for Marlowe's death. The scene of him begging forgiveness in the church, the anguish and sorrow in his face, and those eyelashes casting their shadow (Mary!) combine for a very moving vignette.
Also, when he watches Goop as she first enters on stage as Juliet and he watches from the wings -- the tears in his eyes and the lump in his throat are just beautiful to see. I even like Goop's sly look at him standing in the wings, but the smile coming slowly across his face is wonderful to watch.

He was the one worthy of an Oscar in that film, not Goop.

I hate Weinstein for sullying this film. Because it's a really charming film, and Fiennes and Paltrow are wonderful in it.

I haven't seen SIL in 20 years. I remember enjoying the score but having an irrational dislike of the film due to the Weinsteins' aggressive campaigning to win oscars.
I thought the film was overrated and that Cate Blanchett, Saving Private Ryan and Life is Beautiful were robbed.
However, I would like to revisit this film as I'm sure I'll really enjoy it all these years later. In fact, it'll seem like a masterpiece compared to the dreck that gets made nowadays.
Odd that Joseph Fiennes never became a major leading man. He was a beauty that one.

Warren Beatty came to Shakespeare in Love's defense and produced evidence that Saving Private Ryan had actually done more advertising than Shakespeare in Love.

Don't forget to revisit Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett. He plays her love interest. He's definitely an underrated leading actor. It is crazy that someone like Leo D became the critical darling and JF didn't even register with people.

I forgot about him being in Elizabeth. So he was the leading man to both of the two top contenders for Best Actress and didn't even got his own nom. He got a SAG nomination but Edward Norton knocked him out at the Oscars (with the same 4 other contenders.) This was back when people liked Edward Norton!

That's right! I totally forgot he was in Elizabeth too. That was a big year for him. I wonder if he chose to have a low-key career after this. Not everybody wants to be Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.

I've never heard of most of his films post-1998. The Merchant of Venice yes, Running with Scissors yes but none of the others. You'd think he'd have had better offers.

His full name is Joseph Alberic Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes!

Isn't he in Handmaid's Tale now?
He was very attractive in his younger days but he'll never hold a candle to his brother, the once-mesmerizing, and still more talented Ralph.

R9, if you’ve not seen Enemy at the Gates, it’s very good and has an intriguing gay subtext in the relationship between him and Jude Law. (Plus a superb James Horner score.)

I remember Joseph Fiennes being good looking but also with some crazy eyes here and there. People who find dicaprio and damon pretty and harmless are creeped out by Fiennes, since he seems to be pretty intense on screen as well.

Yes; and he was incredible this most recent season and was literally the only cast member who didn't get an Emmy nomination.

Maybe he's not into doing all the schmoozing, campaigning and self-promotion to get nominated for things.

He plays the abusive man who is a founding father ofGilead, the country that abuses women. He's not getting an Emmy nomination for that role in 2021.

Bradley Whitford and Max Minghella also play leaders in Gilead who subjugate women and they were nominated.

Goop was superb in that film. She’s a terrific actress. The most standout thing in it were her, him, the costumes, score, and the last three minutes. It has one of the best endings of any film, with the shipwreck, his narration, & Goop’s walk up Holkam beach against that swelling score. It’s Weinstein’s redemption. What a blessing he was to the history of film! Jack Warner and almost every other studio mogul of the golden years demanded sexual favours as part of the game, but there’s no handwringing about them.

He had one good year with Elizabeth and Shakespeare in Love and that was it.

Like his brother Ralph, Joseph Fiennes has aged like a pint of milk – chunky and putrid, with a few strands of hair.

I think he still looks good. He's turned into a handsome daddy.

Unlike his brother Ralph who's gone full-frontal in a number of films, Joseph is modest in comparison in his baring himself for his art.
