The Gays and Tennis: Part 92 finishing up Cincinnati and last pre-USO events

last thread paywalled in 5 days...is that a record?

it was a dramatic day today in both men's SF with Medvedev hurting his hand after running into a camera in the back of the court and then Zverev accusing Tsitsipas of texting his father for a tactical change while taking a bathroom break

The ladies SF were much more straightforward with both Barty and new upset queen Teichmann advancing in 2 comfy sets

so far a Zverev-Tsitsipas post match article hasn't been posted yet. I'm waiting to see comments from both

how can Zverev give such a chummy handshake after accusing his opponent of cheating? how fake can someone be? If he lost I wonder how that handshake would have gone

by Anonymousreply 1August 22, 2021 3:19 AM

Thank you OP! I think it was over 300 posts so it got paywalled.

by Anonymousreply 2August 22, 2021 3:22 AM

I was checking online and there were many negative comments about the greek cheating. He lost a lot of fans.

by Anonymousreply 3August 22, 2021 3:23 AM

R1, I posted this at R327 in the prior thread regarding Zverev's post-match interview:
A. Zverev basically saying that Tsitsy is a cheater and that he never cheats. He just beats. (Credit to [R308])
I never take a medical timeout when I don't need it. I never go to the bathroom when I don't need it. I always try to play as fairly as possible and by the rules. Some people use it for their advantage. I mean the rules are you know very bendable I would say. Sooooo yeah. I was a little bit frustrated because it did happen at the French Open already before the fifth set. It did happen in Acapulco as well. So it was a little bit of frustration, but it's all good. At the end of the day we're two competitors and you know we're trying to beat each other.

by Anonymousreply 4August 22, 2021 3:23 AM

R4 thanks. Any comments from Tsitsipas on the accusations? Surely he'd want to clear things up if it's not true lol

he hasn't posted on instagram yet

by Anonymousreply 5August 22, 2021 3:27 AM

Tsitsipas is so stupid. I wonder how many bathroom breaks he's gonna take at the US Open? His jig is up.

by Anonymousreply 6August 22, 2021 3:34 AM

They shouldn't allow them to bring their phones for a bathroom break. As for Zverev, the ATP introduced a new "review of safeguarding policies" today (see the last sentence of the second paragraph).

[bold] Tsitsipas post-match comments: [/bold]

However the Greek star brushed off any criticism of his actions, insisting he had simply been changing his clothes after getting sweaty throughout the first set.

"Nothing crazy. It's not astrophysics," Tsitsipas said after the match.

"I'm heading towards the locker room to go change my T-shirt. I don't think it would be very nice if I change shorts on the court in front of everybody.

"I'm a person that sweats a bit more than others. I think it's acceptable, it's just how it works for me."

Tsitsipas re-emerged soon after Zverev's complaints, with some in the crowd booing the world No.3 for holding up the contest for so long.

However, Tsitsipas said he will not change his ways.

"I'm not going to stop doing it, because it makes me feel better when I step out on the court to begin the new set," he said of leaving the court to change.

Tsitsipas may have been pushing his luck when — after barely 90 minutes of play and one lengthy change already — he tried to leave the court again for the same purpose after winning the second set.

But the expedition was stopped by the chair umpire who said he had used up his quota of break time.

"I somehow managed it (to play while sweat-soaked) but it wasn't nice of him. I will check the rulebook later," Tsitsipas said.

"A player shall be allowed to go to the bathroom in each single set, as far as I know."

He added: "We are trying to play tennis out there, obviously sweating a lot, giving our best effort and our effort is not really being appreciated.

"I'm very sad to see it be this way."

by Anonymousreply 13August 22, 2021 8:19 AM

It's ridiculous. They need to set a 5-minute maximum limit, with a change of kit a left in the bathroom before the match so they have no excuse for taking their bag in. I don't believe Tsitsipas for a second. Am I right in thinking that before the past few months he wasn't doing this on such a habitual basis?

by Anonymousreply 14August 22, 2021 8:47 AM

I hope Teichmann wins just to prove how anarchic the WITA tour is when it isn't being very compelling like those idiots B and C keep telling us it is.

Pliskbot was lucky to even reach the 1/2 final given how she was being outplayed until 4-0 in the Set 1 until Badosa got pregnant and withdrew.

it's quite pathetic how Tsitsi seems unable to live without his daddy taking care of him every single minute of his life. he coaches him at every single point and Tsitsi needs his help even during the bathroom breaks via phone? Embarassing. And it's also quite unhealthy. Not even Pushniacki had such a close relationship with her father.

by Anonymousreply 22August 22, 2021 12:35 PM

OUr favourite teen homophobe Holger Rune won another challenger and gets nearer the top 150. He is far from Alcaraz but he is doing really great in comparission with other prominent juniors his age

by Anonymousreply 23August 22, 2021 12:55 PM

Au contraire re Tsitsipiss' comments in R13. Players should be [italic]required[/italic] to change their shorts on court. Exceptions would be given to Querrey, Evans, Djokovic and Sandgren for reasons well known to the audience.

by Anonymousreply 24August 22, 2021 2:41 PM

Titsi is a baby and a cheater…used be a fan of his. I like his game but no more. I’m rooting for Rublev

by Anonymousreply 25August 22, 2021 2:47 PM

R24, add Gramps, Misery and Med to the list of exceptions.

Hubie should be the first one to try out the changing of shorts on the court.

by Anonymousreply 26August 22, 2021 3:09 PM

I don't find Grigor attractive at all, there is a slimy, used car salesman quality about him.

by Anonymousreply 27August 22, 2021 3:32 PM

who brings the whole fucking bag to the locker room during bathroom break?

He claims he was changing his shirt. Oh please like he gotta go to the bathroom for that, is he a girl?!

by Anonymousreply 28August 22, 2021 3:34 PM

yes, Titsi is quite a big baby. I remember last year US Open, he was crying or close to tears, pretty choked up coz his parents weren't there with him

by Anonymousreply 29August 22, 2021 3:36 PM

He said he had to change his shorts too.

by Anonymousreply 30August 22, 2021 3:38 PM

Which of course requires a cell phone as an accessory.

by Anonymousreply 31August 22, 2021 3:43 PM

Oh puhleeze. Like Titsy needs to take his entire bag and his phone with him just to change his shirt and shorts. Back in my day many is the time I stripped down to my birthday suit and then changed into a fresh shirt and skirt right there on court. No one said a thing. OK, a few guys threw up and a few others went blind, but most people didn't say a thing. In fact I used to get gushing letters and constant phone calls from Margaret Court after she saw me do that.

Grigor is unforch losing his looks. When he doesn't shave he gets a kinda dirty/swarthy look to him and his face is sun-damaged. He also never really bulked up, and now seeing his thin, shaved legs is kinda a turn off.

Gimme Karen, Musetti or Alcaraz.

by Anonymousreply 34August 22, 2021 3:49 PM

It's easy, no?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 35August 22, 2021 3:52 PM

It really like Tsitsi's game and have been a fan for the last couple years. But since he blew the French Open 2-0 sets lead against Djokovic, lost in the first round of Wimbledon, and continues to choke away matches, I'm losing my interest in him. Unfortunately, there is no one left to root for until Sinner's generation start to legitimately vie for Slams.

I liked Thiem but was disgusted by his mental check-out after winning his maiden Slam. Moving down to the next generation below Thiem, Medvedev and Zverev are assholes, Rublev is a mindless basher, Shapovalov is dumb, Ruud's game is boring, and Auger-Alliassime mentally just doesn't have it. I don't know a lot about Hurkacz but is he an anti-LGBTQ+ Pol?

I like Berretini but not sure about his mental abilities. Maybe one of the young Italians (Sinner, Sonego, Musetti) will make his mark soon? Sebastian Korda has an upside, but is he a deplorable like so many of the American men? His father was a drug-cheat.

by Anonymousreply 36August 22, 2021 3:55 PM

I think that from the 21-and-unders we'll see FAA and Sinner become real threats in 2022. Felix is getting mentally stronger and Sinner just needs consistency. They need to eat a few more hamburgers along with Seb K., who's shown no sign of his political persuasion. Musetti's got the clay prowess but falls flat on other surfaces. Alcaraz could be scary by 2023.

by Anonymousreply 37August 22, 2021 4:09 PM

R36, the only thing the Kordas believe in eugenics. Korda’s girlfriend is the daughter of a former Ballon d’Or winner.

by Anonymousreply 38August 22, 2021 4:11 PM

Lots of tennis players have sun damaged faces like Djokovic and Dimitrov. With how much time they spend outside you would think they'd wanna lather on the sunscreen.

by Anonymousreply 39August 22, 2021 5:31 PM

Isner high def looks like the sun aged his skin an extra quarter century.

by Anonymousreply 40August 22, 2021 5:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 41August 22, 2021 5:54 PM

Watching the doubles final right now. It's a really good, and fun match. First two sets going to tie breaks so far.

Also, Austin Krajicek is pretty hot.

by Anonymousreply 42August 22, 2021 5:59 PM

Rublev looks like a really shy, quiet guy.

Zverev has fangs. I'm team Zverev.

They have been friends since age 10!

by Anonymousreply 43August 22, 2021 6:01 PM

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 45August 22, 2021 6:07 PM

R37 Sorry, but when did Felix became mentally stronger? he is still losing matches he should have won (even when they are not finals)

Felix is a player who had a great physical advantage against his peers during his junior years and he seemed destined to big things but just like Shapo his game stalled and he seemed unable to bring the next level. He is very young, he has time, but there are already younger players in the top 100 who won a title

by Anonymousreply 46August 22, 2021 6:16 PM

R46, do we really have to go through this for the umpteenth time? Last week Felix just took out Khachanov and Berrrettini and prevailed in the second set of the quarters against Tsitsipas before Stefanos took his 438th bathroom text cheat break. And FAA also reached the quarters in Wimbledon. He'll likely overtake Sinner in the latest rankings, which will be Felix's highest ranking ever. I'm weary of your coming out of the woodwork every time I say something pro FAA. I noticed your boy Sinner lost in the first round he played in Toronto and the second round he played in Cincinnati, but I'm still giving him kudos for what he's accomplished instead of pouncing on every little negative thing when someone praises him.

by Anonymousreply 47August 22, 2021 6:38 PM

Happy for Zeballos and Granola Bars, it was a great match.

Happy for Ash -- she's playing great and hope she keeps the form into the Open.

by Anonymousreply 50August 22, 2021 8:53 PM

Ash seems a lot less flakey than the top female players of the last 10 years or so. Her game is also—finally, after aeons of mindless bashing and screaming—a sight for sore eyes. She’s got every shot in the book, uses the whole court, and changes her tactics to give her opponents the most difficult time on court possible.

by Anonymousreply 51August 22, 2021 9:12 PM

Yes R51! No mindless bashing. Thought and purpose and versatility. Ash has a beautiful game.

by Anonymousreply 52August 22, 2021 9:17 PM

Kyrgios withdraws mere moments before his Murray match was to begin, causing organizers to scramble bringing lucky loser Noah Rubin in to contain the damage.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 53August 22, 2021 11:50 PM

Murray is much happier about facing Rubin than Kyrgios

by Anonymousreply 54August 23, 2021 12:38 AM

so sadly it's clear now these are the men's USO favorites:

#1 Djokovic as long as he's healthy

#2 co-second favorites Medvedev if his hand is OK and Zverev

# Rublev and Tsitsipas

now there are a number of potential spoilers who could upset 1 of them on a good day but unlikely to win the whole thing: Berrettini, Shapovalov, Hurkacz, PCB, FAA, Khachanov, Sinner, RBA, Isner, Opelka, Karatsev

by Anonymousreply 55August 23, 2021 12:43 AM

Per ATP Rulebook, Kyrgios gets to keep R1 prize money while lucky loser Rubin will receive only qualifying final round $$$ if loses to Murray.

by Anonymousreply 56August 23, 2021 12:47 AM

I didn't even know N. Rubin was still playing

Ash Barty now has more than 10,000 ranking points, which is a lot (#2 Sabalenka has a little over 7,000). She'll be no.1 for a while

by Anonymousreply 62August 23, 2021 1:18 AM

A. Zverev is not remotely attractive.

by Anonymousreply 63August 23, 2021 2:08 AM

Novax was training today at Johnny mac's tennis academy on Randell's Island in NY.

Osaka is in already here. She has a collaboration with Levis dropping on the 24th, so she will be making an appearance at one of their stores, guessing times sq since it's the biggest.

by Anonymousreply 64August 23, 2021 2:39 AM

I dunno but from some recent pictures, A. Zverev's hair is thinning in the front.

by Anonymousreply 65August 23, 2021 3:08 AM

the popular Arthur Ashe Kids Day, annually held the Saturday before the fortnight commences, has been scrapped. In addition, fans won’t be allowed to attend the week of qualifiers before the main event, which has become an increasingly popular attraction as it was free to the public.

The ban on fans at the qualifiers and eliminating Ashe Day are due to social distancing still in place to protect the players. Prior to the first round, the 126 players from each of the men’s and women’s draws are usually on-site practicing amid their competitors playing in qualies.

One minor restriction is all fans are required to wear masks whenever entering indoor areas. However, a source said if the roof is closed on Arthur Ashe Stadium or Louis Armstrong Stadium, it will still count as an outdoor situation because of the high-tech air circulation.

by Anonymousreply 66August 23, 2021 5:44 AM

Isn't Osaka the number two? How did Sabalenka overtake her?

by Anonymousreply 67August 23, 2021 7:01 AM

Is it Boris and Svetlana repeatedly suggesting that Zverev is good-looking? What next? Medvedev as the ATP hunk?

by Anonymousreply 68August 23, 2021 7:33 AM

You've thrown down the gauntlet, R68. There are some on here who insist the Medvedev is quite the looker.

by Anonymousreply 69August 23, 2021 8:28 AM

Zverev embodies the "white trash" look. If he only tattooed his face and body, he would be central casting.

by Anonymousreply 70August 23, 2021 10:05 AM

R67 Sabalenka made the Wimbledon semis and won Madrid before the French. Shes had a great late spring and summer season. Plus Osaka hasnt done well lately. She isnt that far ahead of her in points.

by Anonymousreply 71August 23, 2021 11:06 AM

Med = Geeky, overgrown little boy.

Zverev = Eurotrash in danger of OG (overdose of gold chains)

by Anonymousreply 72August 23, 2021 11:40 AM

by Anonymousreply 78August 23, 2021 6:55 PM

R76 He always remends me the gigant sloth of the Ice age movies

by Anonymousreply 79August 23, 2021 6:56 PM

R75 That's not a surprise, he is charming when he wants, and he is way more inteligent than the average (which is not difficult) and unlike Tsitsipas he doesn't have the fake intelectual aura. Unfortunately he is an asshole on court and probably off court

by Anonymousreply 80August 23, 2021 6:58 PM

Zverev's English is very good. yes he's an asshole but I prefer him to the Greek cheater. He's like pretending to be so wise and witty, he's not. He's a dumb cunt. He's not even good looking.

by Anonymousreply 81August 23, 2021 7:06 PM

That's exasperation, not anger, R78. It'd be the same as if every time someone praised Sinner, I jumped in and mentioned yes, but he's so inconsistent blah blah blah. You're very one note.

by Anonymousreply 82August 23, 2021 7:09 PM

R82 Well, Sinner is inconsistent and Felix is exactly at the same point he was two years ago. The main difference is that Sinner proved he is able to win a title

by Anonymousreply 83August 23, 2021 7:11 PM

Uh, no, Felix is at #15 in the world and has made it to eight finals. That's a lot of progress. But all you can call out is that he hasn't won a title.

by Anonymousreply 84August 23, 2021 7:13 PM

And he's won a doubles title, so there's that as well.

by Anonymousreply 85August 23, 2021 7:14 PM

Rome wasn't built in one day!

by Anonymousreply 86August 23, 2021 7:17 PM

R84 He made three finals two years ago. He didn't won a single set in all those finals. I don't see the progress anywhere. He has potential, but progression is very little

by Anonymousreply 87August 23, 2021 7:40 PM

US Open qualification draws are out now. A good mix of the old and young players.

by Anonymousreply 91August 23, 2021 9:21 PM

Surprised to see Verdasco in the qualies. Other minor surprises are Mmoh, Cressey, Karlovic. Rubin isn't even in the qualies. His latest ranking is # 306, probably too low. From the post above, it seems as if he's trying to create different economic streams. Good for him. I need to seek out his podcast again. I get so scattered and flighty with many players. So many cute guys.

by Anonymousreply 92August 23, 2021 9:44 PM

Knowing that homophobia mostly - not always though - come from homosexuals upset by their own sexual orientation, I'm putting Holger Rune on the front burner of potential gays in the ATP. He'd better behave from now on, or you know in which columns his name is bound to be added. The shocking thing is that Denmark is one of the least homophobic countries in the world. On the other hand I see that he has trained in the Mouratoglou academy since 2016. The one in Biot (Côte d'Azur)? Is homophobia part of the Moratoglou brand values?

by Anonymousreply 105August 24, 2021 7:55 AM

I’m not sure that the real reason for the antivaxxer stance that is so common among tennis players is just that elite sports stars have so much time on their hands and an obsessive relationship with their body. I think their lack of formal education is probably the biggest factor.

Anyway, this is an interesting read.

To be fair, lame excuse and standard apology apart he had a way better behaviour post scandal than his mother and Mouratoglou who blamed the press and people who envy the guy and so on.

At least he seemed able to take the blame even if his excuse doesn't sound very plausible.

by Anonymousreply 110August 24, 2021 5:38 PM

Hey, is that male tennis player named Karen married?

I just saw him walk by me, his hands were wrapped around a woman's waist and hers was wrapped around him as well. Don't know who the girl is but she's very tall, he's 6' 4"

She's also a tennis player judging by her clothes. He did not go back to his hotel, maybe he's going back to her hotel?

I work right around the area where he's staying and others are staying close by... midtown area.

by Anonymousreply 129August 25, 2021 1:15 AM

Misery team or Tiafoe team?

by Anonymousreply 130August 25, 2021 1:35 AM

Karen Khachanov and Danill Medvedev are both married and they married very young. Their wives aren't very prominent however.

Rublev isn't married. He sometimes gets queeny on and off the court; never heard of him having a girlfriend.

by Anonymousreply 131August 25, 2021 1:44 AM

Karen has a little boy, too.

I would love to see Vee draw Look At Me Osaka in the first round of USA Open. Rumors before the match that it is Vee's last match before she retires. There will be tons of media attention and numerous press people. The sight of them causes Osaka to fall apart and Vee pulls off a legendary 1/6 7/6 6/0 upset.

by Anonymousreply 140August 25, 2021 6:36 AM

Serena has pulled out of the US Open now. It does feel like that her era is over, just like with Fed.. Nadal's appears to be winding down too.

by Anonymousreply 141August 25, 2021 11:46 AM

Well at least we can look forward to a great run by Granny V -- maybe all the way to R2!

by Anonymousreply 142August 25, 2021 11:49 AM

Serena Williams collapse is complete!!

by Anonymousreply 143August 25, 2021 12:10 PM

If you looked at Serena's social media, there is no sign that she's a tennis player. It's all her dressed up in various outfits and posing, trying to look glamorous etc.

I bet she's fat like a cow too.

by Anonymousreply 144August 25, 2021 12:39 PM

To be fair to Great Auntie Ree she will be 40 in September and had a very long run as a top player, winning Slams in three different decades and over an 18 year period. Same for Gramps who is 40 already and has had a very long run as a top player.

The sad part is that none of the younger players has the mental focus needed to be at the level Gramps, Great Auntie Ree, Tío Rafa and even Novaxx have demonstrated.

Hope Granny Vee can at least somehow reach the round of 16. Going by her present form it may need a miracle and for some withdrawals but maybe she will dig in deep and summon up something special for a final innings. I wonder if her illness has gotten worse in the last few years.

I hope the winners of USA Open are NOT any of the following - Misery, Zverev, Med, Titsy, Osaka, Barty, Coco 🐐 and Novaxxx.

If someone from that group has to win maybe Barty who seems nice and likeable.

by Anonymousreply 145August 25, 2021 12:44 PM

Misery, Barty, Stef and Coco are not going to win.

Other players in your list can.

by Anonymousreply 146August 25, 2021 12:50 PM

Shall we draw up a list of players we *don't* want to win the US Open?

Men: Novaxx; Wifebeater

Women: Muguruza or any other screaming banshee.

by Anonymousreply 147August 25, 2021 1:12 PM

R129 she was some tennis player? Did you not recognize her?

by Anonymousreply 148August 25, 2021 1:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 149August 25, 2021 1:56 PM

I am, and shall forever be, GOAT.

by Anonymousreply 157August 25, 2021 4:59 PM

damn. I hate when any top player pulls out of a slam.

I mean Serena is already recognized as having won the most slams in the open era which is what matters but it would have been icing on the cake for her to at least tie the loathsome Court. Still no one who knows tennis considers Court the best ever with her numerous empty AO wins

by Anonymousreply 158August 25, 2021 5:35 PM

R146 That's really a bold prediction because right now Barty is the best player by far

R131 The only things we know about young Andrey is that he has amazing hair and he really like to hug his coach

by Anonymousreply 159August 25, 2021 6:20 PM

DL fave Mmoh just crashed out of USO rd 1 qualies in 2 tiebreaks to 18 year old college player Ben Shelton. Not sure he has a ranking. Now to be fair Mmoh is just coming back from injury (which seems to happen yearly to him) but this is obviously a bad loss. He was defending second round main draw points from last year. Now he has to worry about the second round main draw points he'll be defending at next year's AO.

Shelton appears to have a good serve given that he got a lot of aces today.

by Anonymousreply 160August 25, 2021 6:59 PM

I know he has no pro experience but i expected the wimbledon junior champion to win more than one game against Halys

by Anonymousreply 161August 25, 2021 7:05 PM

R160 I wasn't aware the ATP gave points for qualifying rounds. I just learned something new.

by Anonymousreply 162August 25, 2021 7:55 PM

R162 yes you get more points for winning even just 1 round of qualifying than you do if you automatically enter into a slam main draw and lose first round. Additionally, I think players who qualify into a slam get those points added to whatever round they lose in in the main draw

U.S. Open to offer record overall purse, winners' payout down

(Reuters)The U.S. Open will offer total prize money of $57.5 million this year, eclipsing the record payout of $57.2 million set in 2019, tournament organizers said on Monday. The event was held without spectators last year, with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) lowering the prize money to $53.4 million due to lost revenue. Despite the overall increase this year, prize money for the two singles winners has come down from $3 million to $2.5 million, with the runner-up cheque also reduced to $1.25 million, a decrease of $50,000 from 2020.

"Last year was a very difficult year for all of us, and the pandemic had a profound impact on the USTA's financial health," said USTA CEO and executive director Mike Dowse.

"Yet we worked -- and continue to work -- extremely hard to ensure that tennis would continue to thrive for the long-term at every level, and that work led to more than four million new and returning players participating in tennis in 2020."

First-round payouts go to $75,000, a jump of 23% from 2020, while second-round prize money rises to $115,000 from $100,000.

The USTA added that prize money has also been bumped up in the doubles, mixed doubles and wheelchair events.

The U.S. Open, which will welcome back fans this year, starts on Aug. 30.

R158, open era makes no difference for the women who never had a proper pro circuit anyway before the early Slims tour. It wasn't like the best women players were playing the pro tour and the amateurs were cleaning up the slams before 68.

If only Open Era wins matter Bully Jean King should not get to claim the 20 Wimbledon title record either and her pre-68 wins should all be ignored.

by Anonymousreply 201August 26, 2021 6:39 AM

Rothenberg has written a second article about Sharypova and he of the wifebeater. But I'm not sure what could really be done? I suspect that the tour feels that it's a personal life issue that should be dealt with by the police, and she hasn't made a report. So how can they verify and deal with a 'he said, she said' issue when they're normally about tennis? What do you think?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 202August 26, 2021 6:52 AM

Thanks for the link, r202. I know I/we often joke about Rothenberg (and Courtney Nguyen) because of their blind support for the WTA regardless of the tour's obvious unmarketability at the moment, but I really appreciate that Rothenberg won't let this very serious question of domestic abuse go. His journalism on this particular question is impeccable: it's an objective chronicling of what Sharypova has stated about being abused by Zverev, with supporting statements by "Mrs V." and others, and very carefully listing those who have refused to comment or have commented very ambiguously on the affair.

The ATP really should stop looking the other way and address this particular issue. We've already seen in the past, though, that the tour is less than willing to take a real stand against violence (Basilashvili, Gimelstob).

by Anonymousreply 203August 26, 2021 9:51 AM

R203 Since Rothenberg appears to have virtually conducted an investigation already, would something like a warning, suspension or a fine be appropriate? Rothenberg did mention that the ATP were happy to investigate Sam Querrey for fleeing Russia in a private plane after testing positive for covid. (Querrey got a suspended fine of $20,000, to be lifted if he did not commit further covid breaches in six months.)

by Anonymousreply 204August 26, 2021 10:13 AM

Ben Rothenberg is trying to be Yasar Ali of tennis.

I hope he would face same fate as Ali.

by Anonymousreply 205August 26, 2021 10:18 AM

Herr Zverev beat you for very long time, R205.

by Anonymousreply 206August 26, 2021 12:11 PM

That is such BS. If she had any shed of evidence, she would have gone to the cops. What the fuck is the tour supposed to do? It's not like there is an official investigation in any country...because she didn't file a report...maybe coz she is just making shit up?

by Anonymousreply 209August 26, 2021 1:48 PM

R203 Taking a real stand against what exactly? R202 and R207 are right. Should we ban, fine him in his job (tennis - ATP) because a girl said "he beat me" without even filing a report to the police or anything? Is there even proof of such aggressiosn? Heck, at least Basilashvili is currently dealing with a trial, but again, he claims innocent and we don't know the outcome. This is literally the feminist witch hunt of the MeToo and looks like the Holy Inquisition.

The Wifebeater thing is awkward (no more sleeveless shirts?). I don't think that it's really appropriate for the ATP to take action on unofficial claims, though these seem to be well-corroborated. Honestly, I think this is probably what's best if she doesn't want to charge him. She can make her claims, show her witnesses and let people decide if her claims are credible. I think they are, and will spread the word. He can do his non-specific denials if he wants to reply informally, or sue for defamation if he wants to formally - just like her.

Regardless, he'll hopefully not be able to abuse future partners. (Or at very least, they're aware of the risk.)

by Anonymousreply 230August 26, 2021 9:30 PM

it's hard to see an abuser just decide to stop being abusive without therapy. If Zverev did abuse that ex gf and gets away with it, sadly he'll likely do it again to someone else

Musetti's mole is so gross, he should get it removed. He would look a million times better.

by Anonymousreply 236August 27, 2021 12:04 AM

R235, which first round matches do you not find compelling?

by Anonymousreply 237August 27, 2021 12:12 AM

It seems pretty clear now that Serena will never able to match MSC record of 24 grand slams.

This year was her last shot.

by Anonymousreply 238August 27, 2021 12:22 AM

R236, are you member of “DL mole patrol”?

by Anonymousreply 239August 27, 2021 12:29 AM

Ymer team or Tiafoe team?

by Anonymousreply 240August 27, 2021 1:01 AM

R 239, I am not but that thing on his face is gross and has hair...

by Anonymousreply 241August 27, 2021 1:19 AM

Shapo has moles on his face too but they ain't gross looking like Musetti's.

by Anonymousreply 242August 27, 2021 1:55 AM

I wonder who DL will cheer for if Rune does qualify and then draws Djokovic?

by Anonymousreply 246August 27, 2021 3:02 AM

I will root for Rune and then will root for him to be defeated in the next round.

by Anonymousreply 247August 27, 2021 3:04 AM

I will root for Rune.He is a cute twink

by Anonymousreply 248August 27, 2021 6:01 AM

r207:
That is such BS. If she had any sh[r]ed of evidence, she would have gone to the cops.

A couple of points here (and then we can get back to the USOpen):

1. Which cops does she go to? She was allegedly beaten in different cities in different countries (including China, IIRC), and was in all likelihood scared shitless in these countries.

2. If everything she so publicly says is fabricated and untrue, why has Zverev not sued?

I've got no horse in this race at all, but I find it really strange that the ATP is so unwilling to take a definitive stand on this.

by Anonymousreply 249August 27, 2021 8:33 AM

The WS draw was obviously fixed and dreamt up by some racist Boomer. Two stunning and brave African American players, Keys and Stephens, have to play each other in the fucking first round? And the winner then has to play African American icon and future GOAT Coco Gauff in the second round? And the winner of that has to play another African American icon Naomi Osaka in the quarters???

WTF? If Vee and Ree had played the US, the racist ass drawmakers would of forced them to play each other in the first round and the winner would of got Coco in the third or fourth round. This is fucking racist, putting all the African American stars in the same tiny section of the draw forcing all but one of them to be eliminated before the semeyefinal.

There should be a boycott of the US Opens. The draw should be fucking redone and these legends moved to different sections of the draw. I am convinced that Queen Vee and Princess Ree knew this shit was going on and pulled out of the tourney because they ain't gonna deal with this bullshit at this stage of there careers.

by Anonymousreply 250August 27, 2021 9:13 AM

Alcaraz Team. Swarthy and stacked.

by Anonymousreply 251August 27, 2021 10:34 AM

The US qualification match last night was the last match of the career for Paolo Lorenzi.

by Anonymousreply 252August 27, 2021 12:44 PM

Himbo vs Delbonis and unpredictable Basilashvili vs Korda are gonna be interesting. Also looking forward to Barty vs Zvonareva, two beautiful styles and games matching together.

by Anonymousreply 253August 27, 2021 1:13 PM

yes, she was scared shitless but yet she didn't break up with him. so if he beat her up in every country they were in, then I'm sure he beat her up in Russia too. Why didn't she file there? She is from Russia. She is just hoping that he will pay her to shut up. These were recent incidents? I'm sure the statue of limitations is still running. She can still file but she won't coz she has nothing.

Also, he's had a major endorsement ever since this came out, do you not think they do their own due diligence? They obviously investigated the claims and found nothing.

by Anonymousreply 254August 27, 2021 1:35 PM

Someone seems very determined to defend Zverev.

by Anonymousreply 255August 27, 2021 1:37 PM

R254, domestic violence has been mostly decriminalized in Russia. She couldn’t file a complaint, not that anyone would trust the Russian police, of course.

And case you don’t know, blackmail only works when the person doesn’t go public.

by Anonymousreply 256August 27, 2021 1:41 PM

It's not about "defending Zverev". It's about making people understand that it's an issue that can't be solved. It's the word of A against the word of B. Who's right? Who knows. There are not proves of anything from both sides. It's even a bit pointless to still talk about it.

by Anonymousreply 257August 27, 2021 1:42 PM

Anyone ever check Alexandra Stevenson's GS record? One Wimbledon sf, and first round losses in almost every other GS appearance. She never won a match at any USO. HOW is she is a ESPN commentator? She sounds like a vapid debutante.

by Anonymousreply 258August 27, 2021 1:44 PM

I like the Asian girl on tennis channel I find her voice soothing

by Anonymousreply 259August 27, 2021 1:48 PM

Stevenson is incredibly annoying. I'd rather listen to Tracy Austin who at least won a couple of GS. Has Chrissie had her banned?

by Anonymousreply 260August 27, 2021 2:08 PM

At least Stevenson isn't a lesbian! Although she is a half-breed, which is unfortunate.

I love Tracy Austin. White, heterosexual, Christian, good family values and a champion. Chrissy is too slutty and whorey.

by Anonymousreply 261August 27, 2021 3:05 PM

The other day on a TC podcast, Davenport was predicting that Aga Radwanska would make a comeback (she had a baby). Whatever happened to Clijsters?

by Anonymousreply 262August 27, 2021 3:51 PM

More importantly who do studs Hubie, Young Grigor, Fucsovics, and Tommy Paul pay in the first round? We can't have them crashing and buring in the first round. We need eye candy for at least the first week.

by Anonymousreply 263August 27, 2021 3:53 PM

I think Tracy Austin was on Tennis Channel just a couple of weeks ago.

by Anonymousreply 264August 27, 2021 4:35 PM

Um, I’m like Japanese. Okay?

by Anonymousreply 266August 27, 2021 4:36 PM

Puhleeze Naomi at R266. Your haafu ass knows well how the Japanese people feel about you. You Black, gurl. And wasn't your fake ass making a big deal out of BLM with your woke face mask accessories last year?

by Anonymousreply 267August 27, 2021 4:44 PM

Fucsie should get a bye into the second round based on looks alone.

by Anonymousreply 268August 27, 2021 5:37 PM

R262 she suffered an injury in the spring I think she's still recovering from that.

by Anonymousreply 269August 27, 2021 5:45 PM

Is Davenpork still a heifer?

by Anonymousreply 270August 27, 2021 5:50 PM

Lots of WTA gals get really beefy when they retire Tracey, Chris and Martina are exceptions.

by Anonymousreply 271August 27, 2021 5:53 PM

Lindsay looks great these days.
Lots of WTA gals get really beefy when they retire Tracey, Chris and Martina are exceptions.

Fuck you, bitch. I am thin as a rake. Aaaaah eeeeeee!

by Anonymousreply 273August 27, 2021 6:03 PM

It's kind of weird to think that Lindsay Davenport was considered some kind of heifer. Serena is way bigger than her for example, as are most Americans.

by Anonymousreply 274August 27, 2021 6:11 PM

R249 He doesn't sue because he has absolutely nothing to win.

Let's be clear, a lot of people won't give her any credibility unless she sues him, second wife beater or not he is an asshole going to court is going to show that, so even if he wins for defamatiion his image will lose a lot more.

Domestic violence is a very serious thing and frankly i don't think she is dealing with the whole thing the right way

by Anonymousreply 275August 27, 2021 6:17 PM

R274 Lindsay is a big girl, and she was way bigger at the beginning of her career. Then she lost some weight and become a real threat at GS.

She had amazing ground strokes (Magui Serna always said that nobody she faced hit the ball like Lindsay) but she was slow like a turtle

by Anonymousreply 276August 27, 2021 6:19 PM
Fuck you, bitch. I am thin as a rake.

And on the edge of a knife.

by Anonymousreply 277August 27, 2021 6:29 PM

Once Lindsay lost the added pork she won her majors. She was quite large with a marshmellow puff face prior to 1998

by Anonymousreply 278August 27, 2021 6:32 PM
It's kind of weird to think that Lindsay Davenport was considered some kind of heifer. Serena is way bigger than her for example, as are most Americans.

When I was a kid and she was at her peak, I used to call her “the fat tennis player”. My mom used to correct me and say “She’s not fat; she’s big boned.” Although then Americans were generally bigger than people of other nations, they had not yet become the monstrosities of today.

by Anonymousreply 279August 27, 2021 6:34 PM

Lindsay always looked and moved like a giant hippo on the court. I was a third of her size and still won more majors than the hippo.

by Anonymousreply 280August 27, 2021 6:37 PM

And our favourite teen homophobe is a set away of his first GS main draw.

I follow juniors so it's always good when a player you heard and follow through the years reach the pro level and Rune made a lot of progress this year (and it was not due to the multiple wc) but his behaviour on court (even without the gay slur incident) is not something i like to watch (we have enough spoiled brats on the circuit).

The way his mom and Moratoglou reacted to the incident made me thing there's little hope for him (in fact he reacted way better even with the standard apology and fake excuse because at least he didn't tried to blame others).

And there seems to be a big interest on the atp on the guy, there are a lot of articles about him, even more than others like Alcaraz or Musetti who are doing better than him.

Anyway, if he is able to get through the main draw it'll be huge for him specially because he comes from winning two challengers on clay

by Anonymousreply 281August 27, 2021 6:58 PM

Emma Raducanu is through to the main draw

by Anonymousreply 282August 27, 2021 7:22 PM

R282 will her tummy be able to handle the main draw?

Love Lindsay D -she is far and away the best female commentator.

by Anonymousreply 283August 27, 2021 7:54 PM

Hey Gunter at R277, how is your lover and bitch Stef? Has her ass healed yet from all the kickings I gave it on the tennis courts around the world?

by Anonymousreply 284August 27, 2021 7:58 PM

Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Masks will not be required when the US Open tennis tournament gets underway next week in Flushing Meadows, Queens. Fans won’t need to mask up or show proof of vaccination to attend.

“The goal is not to prevent all cases of COVID. The goal, really, is to be certain that we don’t have an outbreak of COVID that’s going to be unusual or that we would regret,” Dr. Brian Hainline, a U.S. Tennis Association first vice president and member of its medical advisory group, said on a conference call with reporters.

by Anonymousreply 285August 27, 2021 8:25 PM

a really stupid decision. The least they could do is require masks. Even if NY is 1 of the more vaccinated states, there are people coming from all over the country and world who aren't

Yes, people were commenting about whether the players should be vaxxed etc in order to play...

Ahead of U.S. Open, Sascha Zverev Again Denies Domestic Abuse Allegations, Takes Legal Action

In his first public comments since a Slate.com story this week brought up new allegations of domestic abuse, tennis star Alexander “Sascha” Zverev issued a full-throated denial and promised legal action against the reporter and outlet that published the story.

“I've always said that the allegations and everything that has been said is untrue,” Zverev, the No. 4 seed and reigning Olympic gold medalist, said Friday in his first U.S. Open press conference. “The court confirmed that. So there's nothing else to say from my side because, as I said, the court confirmed that it's untrue. There's nothing more I can say towards that.”

Asked to elaborate on which court he was referring to, the 24-year-old German said: “We didn't go to trial. If the court confirmed it, the court confirmed it. There's nothing else that I can say.”

In October 2020, Zverev’s former girlfriend, Olga Sharypova, gave an interview to a Russian sports website in which she alleged the German tennis player tried to strangle her with a pillow before the 2019 U.S. Open and that Zverev also hit her head against a wall at a New York hotel before the tournament, saying she feared for her life.

In the Slate interview that published Wednesday, Sharypova, a former junior tennis player, disclosed other allegations of physical and verbal abuse by Zverev, including that he told her he wished she would die.

In a social media post, Zverev called the claims “defamatory and false" and said he would be pursuing legal action against the source and the author of the story.

ESPN.com reported that Slate.com confirmed Zverev has started legal proceedings in Germany and said the company stands by “our fair and accurate reporting based on multiple sources and interviews.”

Zverev, the runner-up to Dominic Thiem at last year’s Open, is one of several top contenders for this year’s title and among those attempting to stop world No. 1 Novak Djokovic from completing the first calendar Grand Slam since Rod Laver did it in 1969. He enters the tournament on an 11-match winning streak after taking the Cincinnati title last week.

“I'm very happy to be back here, because now I can feel like I can go out on that court and I can prove myself, whether I got better since last year, what actually happened,” he said. “I feel like I'm playing great tennis this year.”

Chicago: Svitolina vs. Cornet

Cleveland: Kontaveit vs. Begu

The court confirmed it without a trial? Well damn no need to do an investigation at all I guess. All is good then for this douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 320August 28, 2021 4:25 AM

To which court does A. Zverev refer?

by Anonymousreply 321August 28, 2021 4:26 AM

His ex gf never filed charges right? or she sued him and the court dismissed her case and she didn't file a police report?

by Anonymousreply 322August 28, 2021 4:28 AM

What about Young Grigor?

by Anonymousreply 323August 28, 2021 6:20 AM
I suppose you also think that banning smoking at an outdoor event is absurd. I bet COVID aerosols travel at least as far as the stench of a cigarette.

Well, you can get a vaccine against COVID. You can't get a vaccine against against cigarette smoke. So I would probably be for some restrictions on smoking at an outdoor event (such as: no smoking inside the stadium except for in designated areas).

But if it's just the stench of cigarettes that has your panties in a bunch, I presume you're also for banning all colognes and perfumes as well as scented deodorants and shampoos.

I still think proof of vaccination at an outdoor event is absurd.

by Anonymousreply 324August 28, 2021 10:51 AM

R322 She never filed charges but to be fair, there's some confusion about where she should while Russia has virtually decriminalised domestic violence.

by Anonymousreply 325August 28, 2021 12:31 PM

R325 They didn't live in Russia and he is german where there are laws that protect women

by Anonymousreply 326August 28, 2021 12:34 PM

Regardless of what happened in that specific regard, it seems pretty clear that chainy chav Zverev treats his bedmates, umpires and the press about as well and expendably as he treats his rackets.

by Anonymousreply 327August 28, 2021 1:07 PM

r324, my point wasn't that cigarettes are smelly (they are, though) but that if the smell of a cigarette (or, if you prefer, a cologne or perfume or deodorant) can be carried through the air to your nostrils in an outdoor event then COVID-19 aerosols can be as well. Hence a mask in public. Not rocket science.

by Anonymousreply 328August 28, 2021 1:20 PM
