Female Couple Shot to Death at Utah Campsite

Police in Utah have launched a homicide investigation in the deaths of a married female couple shot to death Wednesday at a campsite in Grand County.

The victims were Crystal Michelle Turner, 38, and Kylen Carrol Schulte, 24, who had lived in Moab, Utah, Salt Lake City TV station KSL reports.

The women were last seen at a tavern in Moab Saturday night, and they had called friends that night saying they were worried about “a weirdo camping near them that was freaking them out,” according to social media posts. They were planning to move to a different campsite.

“We are currently following up with any and all leads that come to our attention during this investigation and will continue to be available to people to come forward with information,” said a statement from the Grand County sheriff’s office. Sheriff’s personnel believe there is “no current danger to the public,” the statement added.

Several friends are posting fond remembrances of the couple on social media. “Kylen Schulte would always comment about how beautiful the flowers were in front of the restaurant,” one wrote on Facebook. “She asked a few weeks ago to pick a few for her wife. They were truly in love and spread so much joy around them. I'm so sorry this happened to them. Both were absolutely amazing souls.”

Schulte’s family set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to have her buried next to her brother, Mackeon Daniel Schulte, in Billings, Mont. Her brother was fatally shot by a friend in 2015 at age 15. The campaign has exceeded its goal, and the funds will be shared with Turner’s family, according to the GoFundMe page.

So sad. RIP ladies. We will find the fucker(s) who did this to you.

by Anonymousreply 1August 21, 2021 11:28 PM

You can only hope to be safe in civilization. Go out in the wilderness like that and it's back to cavemen.

by Anonymousreply 2August 21, 2021 11:31 PM

I always carry a sharp machete when camping, and my big dog comes along. Mostly for bears but also for bad people.

by Anonymousreply 3August 21, 2021 11:33 PM

How freaky that Kylen's brother also died from being shot.

by Anonymousreply 4August 21, 2021 11:38 PM

R3 Why not a gun?

by Anonymousreply 5August 21, 2021 11:41 PM

How fucking horrible. RIP to this lovely couple. I've never felt safe camping.

by Anonymousreply 6August 21, 2021 11:47 PM

Looks like mother and daughter.

by Anonymousreply 7August 21, 2021 11:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 16August 22, 2021 12:28 AM

From the GoFundMe, it sounds like they were homeless and living at campgrounds. Still, Kylen managed to keep the same job for four years. Very sad.

[quote]The Moonflower family is heartbroken to share the news of the recent tragic passing of one of our dear employees, Kylen Schulte, as well as her wife, Crystal Beck. Kylen worked at Moonflower as a cashier (and amazing hat model) for the last four years and was often the first friendly face many of our owners and patrons encountered as they walked in the door. Her genuine kindness, radiant energy, and tireless work ethic touched the lives of countless people and will be deeply missed by Moonflower and the Moab community. ❤️ Our hearts go out to Ky’s and Crystal’s families and friends during this incredibly difficult time. If you feel inclined to donate to Ky’s funeral expenses, the family has set up a GoFundMe at https ://gofund.me/59f18be7 (link in our bio). We will also set up a donation jar at the first register which we will contribute to the GoFundMe.

Where did you read they were homeless, R17?

by Anonymousreply 18August 22, 2021 6:23 PM

I hadn't read it anywhere at the time. I just thought it sounded that way based on these two comments on GoFundMe:

[quote]They found their way from the best campsite to the next but always showed up for work with the best ethic and greatest intent.

[quote]Kylen was always quick to offer me a compliment, and was beaming with excitement when she found out our plans to move into a camper and travel, just like her and Crystal.

After I posted here, I saw this article:

[quote]Hunter said the couple was homeless at the time, and she saw a van and motorcycle they owned at McDonald’s in the morning, before she went into the mountains.

Um.. muder-suicide?

by Anonymousreply 20August 22, 2021 9:03 PM

Lesbians/Gays murdered while camping is practically a murder sub-genre. I'll take my chances in Central Park.

by Anonymousreply 21August 22, 2021 9:26 PM

"Why not a gun?"

R5. A machete can cut wood and brush and jungle vines. Hard to do this with a gun. I also have bear spray. I am camping in black bear territory, not amongst grizzlies. Big dog barks are often sufficient to encourage black bears to move on.

by Anonymousreply 22August 22, 2021 9:52 PM

Beware of the homosapiens.

by Anonymousreply 23August 22, 2021 10:26 PM

R22 Why not both? Granted your evidence for brush and jungles vines suffice, but as you know the old adage, never...and I mean NEVER bring a knife to a gun fight still holds true.

by Anonymousreply 24August 23, 2021 1:21 AM

38 and 24? That is quite an age difference.

Hearing that they were *planning* to move to a different campsite because a nearby weirdo was scaring them makes me sad. If only they hadn't waited.

by Anonymousreply 25August 23, 2021 1:28 AM

Crystal Michelle looked like how I imagined Denise of the Rainbow Express to look.

by Anonymousreply 26August 23, 2021 1:34 AM

I guess there really is a lid for every pot.

So sorry... RIP, ladies.

by Anonymousreply 27August 23, 2021 1:43 AM

The cops are saying the public is not at risk. Sounds like murder/suicide.

by Anonymousreply 28August 23, 2021 1:46 AM

Was there a disputed U-Haul involved?

by Anonymousreply 29August 23, 2021 1:48 AM

The older one looks kind of methy.

by Anonymousreply 30August 23, 2021 1:48 AM

I agree. Older methed out dagger is responsible.

by Anonymousreply 31August 23, 2021 1:49 AM

This doesn't seem to be a murder-suicide to me. I hope I'm right.

by Anonymousreply 32August 23, 2021 2:01 AM

Why do you hope that?

by Anonymousreply 33August 23, 2021 2:02 AM

by Anonymousreply 35August 23, 2021 2:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 40August 23, 2021 2:16 AM

The cashier was able to hold down a job but what about the other one? Could the younger have been taking care of the older, perhaps mentally ill one?

by Anonymousreply 41August 23, 2021 2:17 AM

She worked at McDonalds. I haven't seen any mention of how long she worked there.

by Anonymousreply 42August 23, 2021 2:18 AM

I got the impression from the articles I read that they were homeless by choice. Like a Fern in Nomadland kind of existence.

by Anonymousreply 43August 23, 2021 2:24 AM

Sounds like they went to bar to FLAUNT their lifestyle to straights. Not a smart move---and I say that as someone who is still alive--so I know what I am talking about.

by Anonymousreply 44August 23, 2021 2:29 AM

To bar?

by Anonymousreply 45August 23, 2021 2:29 AM

by Anonymousreply 46August 23, 2021 2:32 AM

by Anonymousreply 47August 23, 2021 2:33 AM

Maybe they were homeless because they were saving for a yacht.

by Anonymousreply 48August 23, 2021 2:35 AM

More information is available at the Moab Times-Independent FB page. The newspaper is eliminating their paywall on articles pertaining to this case. The friend who found them posted several comments.

Her FB comment is unclear but they may have been at the Warner Lake campground ($20/night). USFS rangers do check the LaSal Loop campsites frequently and I bet the sheriff is contacting all of the campers who registered and paid for Wed/Thur/Friday night. However, sometimes people don’t pay and just hope no ranger shows up.

One of the gals may have worked at the Moonflower Co-Op, a little food place.

It is possible these gals were using campsites as their homes. Some workers do that.

by Anonymousreply 49August 23, 2021 2:39 AM

If they had a van why were they sleeping in a tent ? R38 I didnt know "dyke" was unacceptable. Ive always called lesbians dykes ,and not one of my lesbian friends ever corrected me .Have I been wrong for 60 years ???

by Anonymousreply 50August 23, 2021 2:46 AM

It was probably the weird guy who freaked them out. The one they sent a message to someone about. Find him, find the evidence, case solved.

by Anonymousreply 51August 23, 2021 2:49 AM

by Anonymousreply 52August 23, 2021 2:50 AM

I hope they plan to bury them in the same place.

by Anonymousreply 65August 24, 2021 12:53 AM

The fund is only for the father of the younger woman to travel to Utah and bring back his daughter to bury her next to her brother.

by Anonymousreply 66August 24, 2021 1:43 AM

R66 = And even then he wanted 15,000 dollars. Shameless Grifts.

by Anonymousreply 67August 24, 2021 2:19 AM

Why isn't the couple being buried together? The father may be a gold star homophobe judging from the GFM page.

by Anonymousreply 68August 24, 2021 2:26 AM

I have no idea how much it costs to transport a dead body to another state, but I can't imagine it's cheap. $15k for travel there retrieve and then have his daughter shipped back home, and then the burial doesn't seem unreasonably high to me at all.

by Anonymousreply 69August 24, 2021 2:26 AM

15 grand gets you a pine box and a metal marker these days. If you lay out for the embalming, prepping the body, transporting it,buy a plot, bury her and get a simple stone you are talking 20-30 grand easily.

by Anonymousreply 70August 24, 2021 2:36 AM

The fund is at $31,918.00 right now. They reached and exceeded their goal in 24 hours. People are moved by this story.

by Anonymousreply 71August 24, 2021 2:42 AM

R70 = Wrong. Cremation gets you an urn and ashes for about 2 grand. I thought the father said he already had a plot. Money Grab.

by Anonymousreply 72August 24, 2021 2:42 AM

According to the GFM, the dad is sharing any excess funds with Crystal's family.

by Anonymousreply 73August 24, 2021 2:44 AM

by Anonymousreply 79August 24, 2021 8:16 PM

Right, r79, she should have chosen a younger partner, given the abundance of lesbians in rural Utah. 🙄

What's your partner like?

I thought crystal turner was her job at the lab.

by Anonymousreply 97August 25, 2021 6:26 PM

Unlike the posters making disparaging comments here, these women were loved and accepted for who they were. Rest in peace.

[quote]Kylen’s love for the outdoors deepened when Sean Paul moved the family to Moab, where she met Turner in 2019. They bonded over their passion for nature and fell in love. Two years later, they were married in a treehouse in Turner’s home state of Arkansas in April 2021. The couple bounced around campsites in Moab while Turner worked at the McDonald’s restaurant in town and Kylen worked at Moonflower.

“The fact that [Kylen] found a way to almost always be outdoors was perfect for her,” Calvert said (Kylen Schulte’s aunt, Bridget Calvert). “And then to find someone that had that same love and passion for life and the outdoors — they just were truly meant to be together.”

Kylen, “never lost a child’s innocence... She didn’t want the hatred of the world get to her,” Calvert added. Sean Paul had embraced Turner as his own daughter, Calvert said.

“Every time I’ve talked to [Sean Paul] in the last 48 hours he’s going, ‘I can’t believe someone killed my girls,’” Calvert said.

What is wrong with so many males?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 102August 25, 2021 7:31 PM

Thank you R102. I'm wondering the same thing. As a woman, I find this story chilling. Were they targeted because they were women? Were they targeted for being lesbians? Or maybe both? I hope law enforcement is able to provide more answers in the coming days.

by Anonymousreply 103August 25, 2021 7:48 PM

It seems like maybe they were doing that "van life" thing that's so popular on YouTube these days. In any case, I hope they find the perpetrator soon.

R102 this isn't the first instance of a gay couple being killed whilst camping, and sadly, it probably won't be the last. When certain psycho straight men encounter two women who want nothing to do with them sexually, it enrages them. And they are similarly enraged when their fragile sense of masculinity is "threatened" by the presence of two gay men. We do not yet live in a world without homophobia.

by Anonymousreply 104August 25, 2021 7:49 PM

I agree, r104. The entitled mentality of these males is the root cause of their homophobia, misogyny, racism, child abuse, and so on and so forth.

The behaviors that stem from false entitlement are so pervasive that most are entirely unable (or unwilling) to see it.

by Anonymousreply 105August 25, 2021 8:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 106August 25, 2021 8:16 PM

The older one was only 38? She looked more like 55. Drugs will do that to a person.

by Anonymousreply 128August 27, 2021 4:33 AM

I can see this being another unsolved murder. If it had been a murder/suicide it would be evident. So it was a murder.

I’m assuming there were at least two gunshots. No one else heard the noise? I’ve only been camping at actual campgrounds where the little plots are very close together. In one of the state park campsites in Wyoming, in the summer, it was quite crowded! One summer we camped in a cabin in a NJ state park and there was only one other plot that had campers on it but we never saw the people. It was eerie as fuck and we left after one night. What kind of campground is empty during the summer? So weird. I barely slept all night.

I wonder what their campsite was like. Was it crowded and close like our WY one or empty and lonely like the NJ one? We could have been murdered in Nj and no one would have known. In WY four other families would smell the gunsmoke.

Camp Crystal Lake.

You were very, very lucky.

[quote]It does seem possible it could be a drug deal gone wrong.

The text about the creepy guy makes me think it probably wasn't, but who knows.

Drug addicts all get the same look after awhile. It's like down syndrome see it once and you recognize it forever

by Anonymousreply 132August 27, 2021 1:05 PM

Cops have asked state and federal agencies to aid the investigation.

They might need the feds to get one of those warrants where they can see whose phone was pinging in the area?

by Anonymousreply 134August 27, 2021 1:49 PM

No, any judge can issue one of those. It’s not necessary for the Feds to do that.

Why anyone would choose to be homeless is beyond me!

by Anonymousreply 136August 30, 2021 8:27 PM

I've been flummoxed by all this, but just read a blind item intimating that the murder could have been related to embryos /fertility stuff -- when I read that the light bulb went on as to why a beautiful 24 yr old woman would marry a meth face broke older woman..they were possibly selling the young ones eggs and the fertility person had them offed??

by Anonymousreply 137February 23, 2022 10:36 PM

Why mention the blind item and not provide a link, R137?

by Anonymousreply 138February 23, 2022 10:39 PM

Why the hell are there so many homophobes in rural areas, god knows they are everywhere but does the fresh air do something to their pea brains??

2/22/22:

[quote]a search warrant unsealed Feb. 18 states that investigators spoke to the couple’s friends and learned that Schulte had told several people about a “creepy man” she claimed had been skulking around their campsite and a nearby town. One of Schulte’s friends reportedly went so far as tell investigators that Schulte said “if something happened to them, they were murdered.”

[quote]On Aug. 17, one day before the women’s bodies were discovered, a deputy with the Grand County Sheriff’s Office performed a traffic stop on a 27-year-old man who KSTU reported is “a possible suspect” in the double-homicide. The man reportedly had a Utah driver’s license and was driving a car with Ohio license plates.

[quote]The man’s name has not been reported because he is not currently charged with any crime and authorities have not officially named him as a suspect.

[quote]“[The driver] was so unnerving that the veteran law enforcement officer decided not to write the speeding ticket as he did not want to take his eyes off [him],” the warrant reported stated. The deputy reportedly wrote that the driver had “acted oddly for being pulled over for speeding” and described the man’s behavior as “almost a combination of euphoria and that he’d been caught doing something wrong.”

[quote]After Schulte and Turner were found dead, police obtained and executed a search warrant on the man’s vehicle and questioned him at the Moonflower Market, where he worked. He reportedly only started working at the market on Aug. 16. Schulte reportedly also worked at the Moonflower Market. The man reportedly said he’d interacted with Schulte at the market as a customer but they had not worked together.

[quote]Investigators asked whether the man murdered Schulte and Turner and he reportedly responded that he had not. Police reportedly wrote, however, that the man’s “demeanor was similar to people that I have had interactions with who had untreated mental health issues.” Investigators also noted that the man stared “vacantly at the person talking to him,” answered “in non-committal ways,” and “rambled” when asked about Schulte.

[quote]“[The man] was asked if all the interactions with [Schulte] were good, [the man] stated that depending on the day the interactions had with other people could be good or bad depending on people’s feelings,” the warrant reportedly stated. “I asked how would react to being rejected or scorned, [the man] again rambled but essentially stated that he would just experience it.”

[quote]He reportedly could not account for his whereabouts on the evenings of Aug. 18, 19, or 20 but said he slept in an outdoor spot that was “away from people” and provided police with the location. Authorities searched the spot and reportedly found two blankets and a jacket with a substance that appeared to be blood on it. Per KSL, Turner and Schulte would have had to pass by the spot on their way to their own campsite.

[quote]In light of the man’s odd behavior and failure to account for his whereabouts, authorities reportedly wrote that investigators should “explore this avenue of inquiry.”

[quote]Several witnesses reportedly told police that they had seen the man around town sleeping in his car. One woman reportedly said she had recently asked the man to leave her place of business because “he makes unwanted advances towards women and makes them feel uneasy.”

[quote]It is not clear why the warrant was unsealed on Feb. 18, but KSL reported it “may mean that police are no longer investigating the man listed.”

[quote]A second search warrant unsealed Tuesday said that investigators requested information from AT&T regarding a specific phone number belonging to one of the victims.

[quote]“As only one cellphone has been recovered we are currently searching for another phone that was known to be possessed by one or both victims,” the warrant reportedly states. “The information stored by the service provider/carrier of this number could provide information about the whereabouts of the phone as well as other information that may lead to a suspect.”

2/23/22:

[quote]The Grand County Sheriff’s Office said a man mentioned in recently unsealed warrants has been ruled out as a suspect in the double murder of a married couple last year.

[quote]In a statement Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said the search warrants related to the murders of Crystal Turner and Kylen Schulte were filed in “the initial days of the South Mesa Double Homicide” and were allowed to expire.

So it was Brian Laundrie then?

by Anonymousreply 142February 24, 2022 12:10 AM

From R140:

[quote]As recently as January, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office responded to online “conjecture” and made clear that Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie had no connection to the Turner-Schulte double homicide during the summer of 2021.

by Anonymousreply 143February 24, 2022 12:14 AM

Yeah, well, I really REALLY wonder how much effort the police are putting into the deaths of two homeless lesbians.

They were toe up

This thread has finished camping for me forever, not that it was ever enjoyable anyway.

The younger one looked like Angelina before all the surgeries.

by Anonymousreply 146February 25, 2022 4:07 AM

Are murderers really so common out there in the sticks that these poor lesbians could cross paths with one and he had no relation to their deaths?

by Anonymousreply 147February 25, 2022 4:15 AM

I don't want to believe it was Laundrie, because I want to see justice done for them. But... I really do think it was Laundrie.

by Anonymousreply 148February 25, 2022 4:20 AM

It's rather straining the bounds of credibility to say that these poor ladies crossed paths with TWO murderers in one day.

The murder suspect, Adam Pinkusiewicz, killed himself.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Months after a newlywed couple was shot to death at a Utah campsite, police on Wednesday publicly identified a suspect for the first time and said the man has since killed himself.

Adam Pinkusiewicz confessed to killing the two women before his death, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

He used to work at the same McDonald’s restaurant as Crystal Turner, 38, who was gunned down along with her wife, Kylen Schulte, 24.[...]

by Anonymousreply 152May 12, 2022 12:59 AM

Was Crystal his supervisor?

by Anonymousreply 153May 12, 2022 1:06 AM

It's been a while and I'm not re-reading this thread, do I not remember police mentioning "persons of interest" or did they never release this information to the public?

[quote]Pinkusiewicz was identified as one of numerous “persons of interest” at the time of the murder.

[quote]As authorities continued investigating the case, they discovered the suspect was present in the La Sal Mountains and Moab area at the time of the homicides.

[quote]Police say Pinkusiewicz left Utah shortly after the two women were killed and then later died by suicide.

[quote]After conducting numerous interviews, authorities say Pinkusiewicz allegedly admitted to other people that he had killed two women in Utah.

[quote]No further details have been provided of the alleged conversation as the investigation remains ongoing.

[quote]Although Pinkusiewicz was found, officials say the case is not closed and authorities are still processing “critical and newly discovered evidence in this case.” Authorities have also seized Pinkusiewicz’s vehicle at this time, a 2007 model Toyota Yaris hatchback.

by Anonymousreply 154May 12, 2022 1:28 AM

How long have they known this? Are they releasing this information now because they've hit a roadblock?

[quote]Multiple attempts were made to locate and interview Pinkusiewicz and according to the release, “through continued analysis and evidence collection, the GCSO learned that Pinkusiewicz was in the La Sals and Moab at the time of the homicides, had left the state of Utah shortly after the homicides, and committed suicide.”

[quote]From numerous interviews conducted by the GSCO, it was discovered that Pinkusiewicz had confessed to a party before his death that he had “killed two women in Utah” and provided details specific to the investigation, known only to investigators.

[quote]The release emphasized that while Pinkusiewicz had been identified as a suspect, the investigation was still ongoing and the case is not closed.

[quote]GSCO continues to process new evidence including Pinkusiewicz’s vehicle which was recently seized.

This article has the most information:

[quote]Pinkusiewicz died by suicide in September, White said, a month after the bodies of Schulte and Turner were found in the La Sal mountains. White said his office received information that prior to committing suicide, Pinkusiewicz "told another party that he had killed two women in Utah and provided specific details that were known only to investigators."

[quote]White said Pinkusiewicz had been in the Moab area for a few months, lived a "van lifestyle," and did not have a consistent address. He had previously been identified as "one of many persons of interest" under investigation in the case.

[quote]A motive for the murders is still under investigation, White said, and there's no word on a relationship between Pinkusiewicz and the two women, particularly Turner.

[quote]"They both worked at McDonald’s. The indications we have is we don’t know if they worked shifts together. It doesn’t seem like it," White said. "But they were both employees at McDonald’s."

[...]

[quote]The sheriff's office is still looking for information about interactions anyone had with Pinkusiewicz or if they saw his 2007 Toyota Yaris in the La Sal mountains or around town. White said investigators have recovered the vehicle, but he didn't say where.

[quote]"I will feel better when we have a total closure on this, but it’s a huge relief. I can’t put it into words right now," White said, praising his team. "They’ve never quit. They’ve kept this going. There hasn’t been a day that we haven’t worked on this."

[quote]This news came the same week that Duane "Dog the Bounty Hunter" Chapman was in Moab searching for answers in the case, but White said his office has not worked with Chapman.

[quote]Asked about the timing of this breakthrough in the case, White said, "it’s just police work. We kept following up on leads. He was the one we’ve been trying to find for a long time."
