Woke Jeopardy! fans scream "Step down, Mayim Bialik!"

Now, some people on social media are calling on Mayim Bialik, who was hired to host the primetime version of the show and specials, to do the same.

Bialik, an actress known for her roles on Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, has been scrutinized for remarks she's made in the past on vaccines, as well as an opinion article she wrote for The New York Times which critics called an example of "victim blaming."

Jeff Jarvis, a former television critic and current journalism professor at the City University of New York, was one of many on Friday who felt Bialik should also be removed as a replacement for the late host Alex Trebek. He also echoed the sentiment felt by a huge sector of fans that actor/chilren's television host LeVar Burton should take over the position.

On Twitter, Jarvis wrote that Bialik "spreads vaccine doubt and hawks brain quackery. She is no representative for a show about facts and authority."

In 2012, Bialik wrote a book on parenting called Beyond the Sling. In it, she wrote, "We made an informed decision not to vaccinate our children, but this is a very personal decision that should be made only after sufficient research, which today is within reach of every parent who seeks to learn about their child's health regardless of their medical knowledge or educational status."

However, in October 2020, she said in a YouTube video she and her children would be receiving COVID-19 vaccines. She noted it was "very disturbing" for people not to get the COVID vaccine, though she still questioned the efficacy of all vaccines, claiming they're "never 100 percent effective."

Following the announcement she would be hosting Jeopardy!, her previous comments regarding vaccines were brought up. This led to her spokesperson releasing a statement to The Wrap that said Bialik "has been fully vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus and is not at all an anti-vaxxer."

Even still, she has not been able to shake the "anti-vaxxer" label, as noted by Twitter users today.

Another past controversy regarding Biliak deals with an opinion article she wrote for The New York Times in 2017 entitled Being a Feminist in Harvey Weinstein's World.

"I still make choices every day as a 41-year-old actress that I think of as self-protecting and wise," she wrote in the article. "I have decided that my sexual self is best reserved for private situations with those I am most intimate with. I dress modestly. I don't act flirtatiously with men as a policy."

Many people took offense to Bialik's article, calling it "victim blaming" in that it suggested women should dress a certain way to avoid provoking sexual misconduct.

"There is no way to avoid being the victim of assault by what you wear or the way you behave. I really do regret that this became what it became," Bialik said in a tweet days after social media users lambasted her for the article.

That article was being cited again on Twitter Friday in the wake of Richards' departure. Some commenters even suggested Bialik's actions, between the op-ed and vaccine comments, were worse than disparaging remarks made by Richards years ago.

While fans call on Bialik to step down, she and Jeopardy!'s producers Sony Pictures Television have made no indication she will be following Richards out the door. As for Richards' replacement, Sony has said it will continue on using guest hosts for the upcoming season.

The job is going to a tranny, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 1August 21, 2021 11:23 PM

Let's just not have any more fucking television at all. That way, none of you witless turds will ever risk being offended by what's on TV.

Have you idiots ever tried turning off the television, sitting down calmly, and hitting yourselves?

East Coast college professors need to be canceled.

by Anonymousreply 3August 21, 2021 11:26 PM

At this point, everyone should just have been perfect from birth, correct?

by Anonymousreply 4August 21, 2021 11:28 PM

R1 Shit, they're gonna give it to Laverne Cox, aren't they?

Until they find out something SHE did in her youth, then she's cancelled too.

This is kind of hilarious...until ABC just gives the job to Meghan McCain.

To read that as "victim blaming" is truly insane. There is no way that anyone who isn't a brainless shit stirrer could possibly interpret it that way.

by Anonymousreply 9August 21, 2021 11:32 PM

Just give it to the trans Black person already - no one will be satisfied until that happens.

by Anonymousreply 10August 21, 2021 11:32 PM

All the virtue-signallers are trying to get LeVar hired so they can tweet congratulations!!! and look all woke 'n shit.

by Anonymousreply 11August 21, 2021 11:33 PM

Could it just be that the Jeopardy audience likes LeVar Burton?

by Anonymousreply 12August 21, 2021 11:34 PM

Shit. She could pretty it up. She’s not that fucking ugly as in that OP snap.

by Anonymousreply 13August 21, 2021 11:36 PM

I visited my elderly parents tonight for supper and we discussed this. I told them you can practically guarantee that whoever replaces Mike Richards will not be a white male.

by Anonymousreply 14August 21, 2021 11:36 PM

R14 Remember when white men had all the power, instead of just most of it?

by Anonymousreply 15August 21, 2021 11:37 PM

God! Jeff Jarvis has something to say now?

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2021 11:39 PM

There definitely seems to be a movement (headed by DL-fave Roxane Gay) to get LeVar Burton hired. Roxane has been wanting to write articles about how him not being hired says a lot about society. I didn't see the trial runs, but a lot of people were saying that as much as they were hoping he'd do well, he actually didn't do that great when he guest hosted. Roxane: Do you think Alex Trebek was perfect on day one?

by Anonymousreply 17August 21, 2021 11:39 PM

[quote]Could it just be that the Jeopardy audience likes LeVar Burton?

Clearly, some of them do. But I'll bet it's a far smaller percentage than it seems. It's just they they are a very vocal minority -- as in screaming.

by Anonymousreply 18August 21, 2021 11:42 PM

They should just cancel the show altogether. Problem solved.

by Anonymousreply 19August 21, 2021 11:42 PM

Levar Burton was the worst host. He fucked up twice in the 5 days he was there. It doesn't matter who they pick as the host, the Burton fans are going to check the background of every person they pick all the way back to birth.

by Anonymousreply 20August 21, 2021 11:43 PM

Jesus, I don't know why Sony Television is being so sloppy. The Egyptians had this kind of thing down to a science thousands of years ago.

Once they have their finalists, all Sony needs to do is have Anubis weigh their hearts against a feather. If the heart is heavier than the feather, then the finalist is fed to an alligator. If the feather is heavier than their pure heart, then they put it back into the finalist's body, sew them up and announce their new host.

It's not that fucking complicated!

by Anonymousreply 22August 21, 2021 11:44 PM

I don't think so. I think loyal jeopardy watchers want LaVar Burton. Their viewership has fallen off the cliff.

by Anonymousreply 23August 21, 2021 11:45 PM

I forgot to add straight. The replacement won’t be a white, straight male.

by Anonymousreply 24August 21, 2021 11:46 PM

R15 remember when the best person for the job used to be chosen?

by Anonymousreply 25August 21, 2021 11:46 PM

People who use the word "woke" are fucking morons. It means a thousand things and nothing. It's for stupid, lazy people.

by Anonymousreply 26August 21, 2021 11:46 PM

[quote]I think I might write an essay about this but… it shouldn’t be this hard for @levarburton to receive serious consideration as @Jeopardy host. He isn’t some random idea people have. He taught generations of children to read. He has real depth. He is charming and handsome.

[quote]I can’t think of a more universally adored public figure. And still people have to create petitions. He has to make his case publicly. Fans have to relentlessly campaign on his behalf.

[quote]All the while, a bland white guy with a messy history of bad behavior doesn’t audition and slides right into the job and right back out. This is unnecessary! It’s ridiculous! And it’s very typical.

by Anonymousreply 28August 21, 2021 11:47 PM

The Twitter mob isn't made up of mostly Jeopardy fans, it's made up of people who want LeVar just because. He did terribly. He tested terribly. If they just give in and give it to him to shut up the mob the viewership will decline even more.

by Anonymousreply 29August 21, 2021 11:47 PM

No, R15, that rarely happened. Who do you know, who does your father know, who are your friends, that's how you get a job and it's always been how you get a job.

by Anonymousreply 30August 21, 2021 11:48 PM

I don't think the Twitter mob will be satisfied unless Levar gets it, but frankly, I think it'd be more enjoyable for all of us if they decided to check off all of the oppressed minority boxes and just try out Roxane as host. It would both please them and us for the sheer comic relief.

by Anonymousreply 31August 21, 2021 11:49 PM

Oh my god, yes R31 haha! I would watch it if she was host, for comic relief as you say.

She would be SO exhausted by some of the contestants, haha!

by Anonymousreply 32August 21, 2021 11:50 PM

what is a proprietary part of this show? It cannot be the game show part, the quiz show part or the human knowledge part, right?

Steven Colbert needs to development a show for CBS. and you can get LaVar Burton.

by Anonymousreply 33August 21, 2021 11:51 PM

I mean can you imagine the tizzy of excitement this site would have if Jeopardy producers announced Roxane as a guest host for a week. There'd be a million threads on it and everyone would be watching. She'd be the worst host yet, but her waddling onto the set, acting condescending towards the contestants and her insufferable cadence would make the funniest week of half hour television this year. Lord knows we need the comic relief, considering how rough this year has been.

by Anonymousreply 34August 21, 2021 11:52 PM

Levar was terrible though.

by Anonymousreply 35August 21, 2021 11:53 PM

When I found out I was dying, I was sad to realize I would just be replaced by some handsome young guy with a bright white smile.

Little did they know that hard part isn't being handsome and reading answers off cards. It's being a TV personality who isn't a flaming asshole off camera. Good luck!

by Anonymousreply 36August 21, 2021 11:54 PM

I think she should stay, in my humble opinionation.

by Anonymousreply 37August 21, 2021 11:55 PM

[quote]Jesus, I don't know why Sony Television is being so sloppy.

People won't be satisfied until Jesus H. Christ himself hosts the show. It's time to CANCEL IT!

by Anonymousreply 38August 21, 2021 11:58 PM

If you read the Ringer piece, it doesn’t sounds as though Levar was given a fair shot. To record five shows in one days is a lot for a newcomer.

by Anonymousreply 39August 21, 2021 11:58 PM

She'll stay. They sacrificed one host already. That will be enough to appease the masses. Mayim is only signed up for primetime specials, so they still need to fill the main hosting role, and Mayim is a woman and, yes, a Jewish person, and that gives her minority standing to leverage against complaints.

Some executives are smart enough to know that these supposed scandals happen daily and that they will blow over when they are ridden out. Whoopi survived several after offending rape victims re Cosby, minorities re Mel Gibson, etc. Many others weather these things just fine. It's really just a matter of who the bosses feel is the best big sacrifice to appease the angry mob—but they don't sacrifice everyone.

by Anonymousreply 40August 22, 2021 12:00 AM

he is not a trained game show host, this is the refreshing part. He can make it his own. Also, he is smart and very supportive of science and literature.

by Anonymousreply 41August 22, 2021 12:00 AM

R38 Imagine the revolt if Jesus were cast. He's not white and he would be regarded as a socialist by middle Americans, so that's a no go. He probably wouldn't test very well on TV. Game show hosts are big-headed clean cut men (rarely women) with great big white teeth and blank stares.

by Anonymousreply 42August 22, 2021 12:03 AM

Geez. People just need to shut the fuck up.

by Anonymousreply 43August 22, 2021 12:03 AM

R34, god that would be amazing! I wish we could make it happen!

Don't forget her army of Twitter followers who would be scouring Twitter to attack anyone who dares to not think she is a "queen!!"

by Anonymousreply 44August 22, 2021 12:03 AM

Considering the average age of a daily Jeopardy viewer is likely in the 60s, the people who really want Levar aren't likely even watching the show.

I don't care who they pick. I just want to move past this as some sort of bizarre cultural flashpoint.

by Anonymousreply 45August 22, 2021 12:04 AM

They would never fire a Jew working in Hollywood. It's basically impossible.

by Anonymousreply 46August 22, 2021 12:06 AM

I watched jeopardy forever. It is a well liked show, as least when Alex was on. He obviously turned the ship, not the producers. Just see Mike Richards for proof of this.

by Anonymousreply 47August 22, 2021 12:09 AM

She was a really good host. Very smart and funny.

by Anonymousreply 48August 22, 2021 12:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 50August 22, 2021 12:13 AM

She’s unattractive

by Anonymousreply 51August 22, 2021 12:15 AM

[quote]I don't think so. I think loyal jeopardy watchers want LaVar Burton.

On what basis do you say that? If anything, I would guess that many loyal Jeopardy! watchers want Ken Jennings.

by Anonymousreply 52August 22, 2021 12:16 AM

LeVar Burton should have been the pick all along. His Q Rating is probably really good and his name recognition is multigenerational in scope. Roots, Reading Rainbow, and the Star Trek t.v. show he was on means that there are a ton of people of all ages and from all walks of life who know of him in an actual nice way and that's the gist of what his Q Rating is based on.

Oh well. Mayim Bialik is truly a very highly educated lady with a good sense of timing. She's fine hosting, but she is quite the eccentric it seems like in her personal life. I don't know. At least her family all got the COVID-19 vaccines. Parents who don't want to vaccinate their children are odd to me, measles and such are very serious.

by Anonymousreply 64August 22, 2021 12:38 AM

Very odd that somebody with a doctorate in neuroscience was doubtful about vaccines before. She should know how to go on pubmed and read the data. As somebody who has worked with MD-PHDs, they are either really really terrible (like a really infuriating why are you wired that way? Why dont you get it? Why are you so concrete?) or theyre really really good, just no middle ground. Im glad she didnt become a doctor.

by Anonymousreply 66August 22, 2021 12:45 AM

*cannot

by Anonymousreply 67August 22, 2021 12:46 AM

Jonathan Frakes would make a much better game show host than LeVar. He's always a hit at the conventions, and more racy than LeVar (whose kids are often in attendance, for some reason). Too bad his looks have gone.

Also Robert Picardo, if there are any Voyager fans here.

by Anonymousreply 68August 22, 2021 12:47 AM

Isn't it generally agreed that LeVar Burton was the absolute worst of all the guest hosts? Why in God's name would his name even be in the conversation?

by Anonymousreply 69August 22, 2021 12:48 AM

R69 Because he's the only Black one, mayhaps? And because people's nostalgia for his earlier work clouds their assessment of his actual job performance?

by Anonymousreply 70August 22, 2021 12:49 AM

Because of his loony fans and the Twitter brigade who want to politicize this r69.

She might be too old, but I would like to see Ann Curry try hosting for a week or two.

by Anonymousreply 71August 22, 2021 12:49 AM

R65 I think there is some nuance about vaccines today that is not allowed to be discussed because people are so polarized. A person can feel like children get too many vaccines at too young an age and not be an "anti-vaxxer," just worried about how their children's immune systems will cope. I have heard a lot of people discuss this, but the questions are always subsumed by "you're anti-science!" finger pointing.

A lot of people don't understand medical science at any given time, and a lot of medical science's facts change over time as more research is continually done.

Science is both the practice of experiemental trial and error (the scientific method) and an authoritative institution that in some regards today may be compared with the Catholic church—its doctrines are to be believed when issued and never questioned, lest a person be named a fool and a danger to society.

Questioning is not always the same thing as being in opposition to orthodoxy.

I've read Bialik's comments and she says that she is not anti-vaccine and never was, that she and her family were getting their COVID vaccines and that her kids have their other vaccines, but she does question the scheduling and heavy dosing of young children. Many people are trained to react to such questioning as a crime against science and humanity, but I think it's an expected thing for many mothers to do and for most intelligent people to do.

But we don't have much room left in our current world for debate that lies in gray area. You're either with us or against us in all cases.

by Anonymousreply 72August 22, 2021 12:50 AM

That's crazy! She didn't do anything!

People are nuts.

by Anonymousreply 73August 22, 2021 12:51 AM

The Jeopardy! producers made a mistake by having guest hosts. When replacing the sidekick on Live With Kelly or one of The View, it works because no one cared about the last person in the position that much anyway.

When replacing a beloved, icon whom half of America grew up watching you have to make a private selection, announce it, and move on as was done with Johnny Carson and Bob Barker. Most people didn’t like Leno or Carey when they took over their respective shows but with time they became well-liked in their own right.

Mayim Bialik has always played likable, sympathetic characters but her real personality has always come across as incredibly holier-than-thou and frankly nutty. She’s not playing a character, she’s playing herself this time so we’ll see how it turns out.

Regardless, I think the way in which the producers went about choosing the new host puts a target on whomever it is for all the fans that preferred another choice.

by Anonymousreply 74August 22, 2021 12:52 AM

Levar is black, beloved by people who watched Reading Rainbow and a representative of literacy, which fits with the Jeopardy! brand, and nostalgic to many Star Trek nerds. He's sort of a neutral, brainy pop culture figures because of his PBS/Reading Rainbow and sci-fi histories, and he also represents black American progress because he starred in Roots. People want him because he is a figurehead who represents many noble ideals to different audiences, and that's a different expectation younger audiences have today than the old "blandly handsome Midwestern guy with big white teeth and lacquered hair" that always has been the prerequisite for most TV game show hosts.

by Anonymousreply 75August 22, 2021 12:53 AM

Blacks think they deserve to take over every single thing now even if the person is mediocre.

by Anonymousreply 76August 22, 2021 12:54 AM

Dumb Americans can't stand having someone with a real degree on their TV everyday.

by Anonymousreply 77August 22, 2021 12:55 AM

Do these people realize that Levar ISN'T REALLY BLIND?!?

Yet he played a blind man for years on Next Generation! Ableism! Appropriation! Unclean!!

by Anonymousreply 78August 22, 2021 12:56 AM

R74 They didn't have a choice. Alex Trebek is fucking DEAD!

R75 LeVar Burton is an actor. He starred in Roots because somebody paid him to do so. And he did Reading Rainbow because somebody paid him to do that too. His newfound support for literacy is secondary to the fact that he's a working actor who reads words others put in front of him. He's a very nice man and a good advocate for education, but he's still a mere mortal.

I say this was bound to happen as soon as they started using existing celebrities as guest hosts. We already know most of these people from their pre-Jeopardy days, and it colors our opinion. We evaluate them compared to their past, and not purely as the host of the show. They should widen the search to find someone who is a gifted game show host, and not merely people who are already famous and earned their money doing something far different from this.

by Anonymousreply 79August 22, 2021 12:58 AM

Keep going, OP, because the more you right wingers screech 'WoKE!!1#!!!!' at every fucking thing, the more impotent it becomes as an insult.

by Anonymousreply 80August 22, 2021 12:58 AM

They just need to make a choice and stay with it. R74 is right that the public casting choice backfired and divided audiences. But once they pick someone, the mob will move on. It will not be an issue in a year.

If Sony is attempting to truly replace Trebek with a host who will be a longtime American institution, then anyone will do over the long haul.

The public has a very short memory. As I noted in the Real Housewives of New York thread, just one year ago, every sane and decent American was enraged and terrorized by Trump and had come to despise all his supporters. Ramona Singer on the Housewives show is a Trump supporter and an anti-masker, and she was reviled before the season began. Two months later, gay men are eager to defend her because she is being lectured to by a black woman about "black excellence" and people find that annoying and so have chosen to support a MAGA conspirator.

The point being, the public is stupid, forgetful and easily won over. Sony needs to choose someone and just drive ahead without looking back. The criticism will wane within a year.

by Anonymousreply 86August 22, 2021 1:04 AM

I get her point about vaccines, and she isn't an anti-vaxxer, just cautious. Hell, even with my dog, they were pushing vaccines that I refused, like bordatella and coronavirus (not the same one) I opted out of those because I didn't plan to (and haven't) boarded him. I went with a limited regimen of rabies, Parvo, and distemper. The only booster he has had is rabies because it is required by law. I had titers done for Parvo and distemper when he was 10 and his antibodies were high for both, so I did not give him boosters. It cost four times what it would have cost or the boosters, but he is 9 pounds and has a heart condition, so I didn't want unnecessary shots.

I don't watch Jeopardy, but I like both Mayim Bialik and Levar Burton. I didn't see their tryouts, but would be happy for both of them if Levar gets the daytime gig. In the end, I don't really care. Fuck woke Twitter though, correction, fuck ALL of Twitter. Twitter isn't the real world, it is a bunch of online loudmouths, and if you ignore them, you take away their power.

I hope Mayim sticks it out, or gives them the finger and goes and sits on her pile of Big Bang cash and cackles to herself.

by Anonymousreply 89August 22, 2021 1:05 AM

Really, I want someone extremely uncomfortable and stupid.

by Anonymousreply 90August 22, 2021 1:10 AM

R79 I didn't say he isn't a mere mortal. I was just acknowledging his persona and his pop culture currency. The public associates actors with the roles they play, and we are in a moment of pop culture prioritizing social justice and virtue, and his roles are associated with African American roots, reading, technology, space exploration and a utopian future. He checks off all the boxes in today's purity tests.

I'm not assigning any positive or negative value, this virtue valuation is just the way it is right now.

And it's always been that people associate pop culture figures with their roles.

by Anonymousreply 91August 22, 2021 1:10 AM

They're just not associating the fact that he had a tryout already and he sucked.

by Anonymousreply 93August 22, 2021 1:14 AM

R79, Alex Trebek didn’t get hit by a bus you idiot. The entire world knew he was dying of cancer more than a year before he actually died so the producers of the show had more than sufficient advance notice during which they could have a replacement picked, with Trebek’s blessing, lined up prepared to go.

I agree with R92. They already had the producer picked to take over and the whole charade of having tryouts only created confusion.

by Anonymousreply 94August 22, 2021 1:16 AM

We're a divided country. They should cast Levar Burton and Mayim Bialik for markets north of the Mason-Dixon and Kid Rock and Tim Tebow for the south. Everyone will be happy. The north can get socially progressive answers and questions, and the south's categories can be things like "I'm Not Racist Because" and "White Bible Figures."

by Anonymousreply 96August 22, 2021 1:23 AM

Robin Roberts checks many boxes

Female -- CHECK

African-American -- CHECK

Lesbian -- CHECK

Cancer survivor -- CHECK

Plus she did well in her week of guest hosting (unlike Levar). Came across as quite competent and likable.

by Anonymousreply 97August 22, 2021 1:46 AM

I want Roxane Gay to play Mayim Bialik playing host of Jeopardy.

by Anonymousreply 98August 22, 2021 1:46 AM

'Oh dear' yourself, R96. You seem to have missed the fact that Roxane spells her name with one 'n' not two.

[quote]If you read the Ringer piece, it doesn’t sounds as though Levar was given a fair shot. To record five shows in one days is a lot for a newcomer.

R39 The show has always recorded a week's worth of episodes in one day. Been doing that since the show premiered in 1984, Likely also did it that way back in the original run in the 60s and 70s too.

Every one of the guest hosts was required to tape five episodes in ONE DAY. Levar wasn't singled out for this five episodes in a day format. Each of the guest hosts experienced it. And each of the guest hosts was a newcomer to hosting Jeopardy.

by Anonymousreply 102August 22, 2021 1:58 AM

Oh My God, enough with the LeVar was sabotaged or not given a fair shot.

He was given a fair shot. The producers didn't even have him on their original roster of guest hosts and they included him when there was buzz about him online.

He got his shot and he SUCKED. It wasn't the Olympics. It wasn't due to shooting five episodes in a day.

It was because he just wasn't good enough.

by Anonymousreply 103August 22, 2021 2:07 AM

Burton’s ratings were the lowest. People can try to rationalize that all they want, but tv is a business first and that’s what producers care about.

by Anonymousreply 112August 22, 2021 2:38 AM

What about Stacey Dash? She's an outspoken idiot and her only known role was in a movie called Clueless, which is funny irony for a trivia show host. It might be a very fun trainwreck, and she'd fit in with all the extreme rightwing game show hosts.

by Anonymousreply 119August 22, 2021 2:49 AM

Alex Trebek gave them a few names before he died. Also, they could reach deeper into the well for another season of tryouts. Go for some non-celebrities, local weathermen, etc. I think Pat Sajak was a local reporter in Buffalo before game-showing.

Hosting is all about personality, not visibility or Q-score. That stuff comes later.

by Anonymousreply 144August 22, 2021 3:53 AM

I haven't watched Jeopardy in years but probably would tune in if she is the host. She's smart and funny, which is necessary for that show. Having a quick, disarming comeback is essential for those unplanned situations.

by Anonymousreply 145August 22, 2021 3:58 AM

Was she funny when guest hosting? I've only seen her be funny with a script.

by Anonymousreply 146August 22, 2021 4:04 AM

Do people really think that Mike Richards, who is only the Executive Producer, had any say in the decision to hire himself? This was a major decision for a cash cow syndicated television show. This decision rose far above Richard's pay grade. I'm not saying that he didn't have an unfair advantage or didn't maneuver himself into a better position, but he didn't hire himself. Quite frankly he was the best choice. Right age, right look, and good hosting ability.

And let's not pretend that Jeopardy is anything but the space between commercials every weeknight before primetime starts. Alex Trebek got the job because he was young and hot - at the time.

[quote] She isn't a working scientist. She was a rich kid in an interdisciplinary doctorate program. She is not a professor teaching undergrads either. Also, she is a loud mouth anti-vaxxer.

The reality the public agrees to share is that anyone who goes to an expensive private, elite university is among the smartest people alive, and anyone with a Ph.D. or an M.D. is at least a borderline genius. Combining this rule with the rule that anyone in television or film is inherently a "chosen one" selected because of a natural greatness, creates a myth of a superperson—Mayim Bialik is one, Natalie Portman is one, Jodie Foster is one. Google "super smart celebrities" and Google handily presents these as the top three results, along with their university affiliations.

All the Trumps were to Ivy League or elite private universities, as did George W Bush, Jared Kushner, Meghan McCain.

We now know that rich and famous and connected people are able to buy credentials easily, but that's objective reality and it doesn't matter. What matters is subjective reality: People choose to believe in myths that everyone affiliated with Harvard or who has a doctoral degree is a genius who knows more than the rest of us do, and to reject the obvious reality that many average people who have above-average means can buy a credential that makes them look like a brainiac. It's all about the wonderful wizard of Oz: he can't give the Scarecrow a brain, but now that they're acquaintainces, he gives the Scarecrow a diploma to convince the world he is a brainiac.

Child star Mayim was famous from her TV show and rich from her TV show when she was admitted to Harvard—same with child star Jodie Foster and child star Natalie Portman. People should question the myths of their brilliance but celebs who could be rocket scientists and instead choose to chase people around on a set screaming and firing toy guns is a good story.

by Anonymousreply 183August 22, 2021 12:07 PM

Your post R183 reminds me of when Joy Behar cracked on The View: "Bush went to Yale - how good can they be?" Hehe.

by Anonymousreply 184August 22, 2021 12:14 PM

If a woman writes an article about living in a "Harvey Weinstein world" and says she keeps safe by dressing modestly and not flirting with men, there's no way to take it other than victim blaming.

Bialik is a nutjob and snotty and judgmental, a mommy blogger with delusions of grandeur and someone who thinks she's much smarter than she is. We've all known crazy and ill-informed people who graduated with advanced degrees and/or from good universities, so I don't know why people are pretending like she must be a well-rounded genius because of her education.

by Anonymousreply 185August 22, 2021 12:22 PM

R184 It's true. I think Harvard, Yale, Penn, Georgetown and Columbia all owe the people of the United States an apology.

All these institutions sell degrees to foolish people who have money and connections. Those people then leverage their undeserved credentials to get high-powered jobs available exclusively to people with those sorts of credentials, and then they use their power to cause damage in the world.

Brett Kavanaugh went to Harvard Law—but he is clearly not an idiot. He is an intelligent person with behavioral problems and he has acted sanely on the Supreme Court so far.

Meanwhile, Bush waged wars for personal vendettas while people "wanted to have a beer with him," the Trumps came thisclose to destroying the United States, Meghan McCain is a moron who was given an influential media presence. All of these people are leveraging their credentials and would not have gotten to where they are in the world without them, despite their names. Trump led with his "graduated top of his class at Wharton" lie as he was making his star, despite Bush's family connections, if he had gone to a university he had earned his way into, it would be some public Texas state school for a BA and certainly not a graduate degree from Harvard or Yale and he would not have become president with that credential.

by Anonymousreply 186August 22, 2021 12:25 PM

[quote]Also, they could reach deeper into the well for another season of tryouts. Go for some non-celebrities, local weathermen, etc.

This is exactly what they need to do. They need to get lesser-known names and try them out, not hire a celebrity, but make a promise of celebrity guest hosts for a few weeks here and there.

[quote] Bialik is a nutjob and snotty and judgmental, a mommy blogger with delusions of grandeur and someone who thinks she's much smarter than she is.

Per my rant above, this is the fault of the media telling that story and the public choosing to believe it.

Every story about Bialik leads with her being a "Harvard-educated neuroscientist," when in reality she's a Harvard-educated reciter of lame sitcom dialogue and, as you say, a mommy blogger.

But the media will never call her anything but a "Harvard-educated neuroscientist."

My sister has a degree in psychology, but she was always quick to correct my mother and say, "that's what I studied, but I am NOT a psychologist! Stop telling people that!"
