The reviewer from 'New York Magazine's' 05/20/1991 issue notes Madonna's appropriations of gay culture and using them to her advantage.
He even refers to her as "reductive!"
I only remember super-positive reviews from 1991.

That was interesting. It's pretty much exactly what I took.away from the documentary too. The woman is a complete boring narcissist and it has caught up with her in her old age. She is alone save for some kids she adopted in order to have an in house fan club , and a skeevy decades younger boyfriend who is there for the express purpose of making her believe she is still the hottest piece of ass around. She lives in a completely artificial environment.
