The Talented Miss Ripley

Broadway's Alice Ripley used her fame to groom young women into being her unpaid assistants and narcissistic supply.

What's the point of being a star if you can't use the groupies?

by Anonymousreply 2August 20, 2021 7:09 AM

[Quote] Ripley would also allegedly engage in sexual conversations with Brie Lynn, who admits that she would initiate those talks. “There were instances where I would bring up a sexual situation that might have involved a specific sexual act, and she was not shutting down those conversations, she was participating in them,” Brie Lynn alleges. “She was responding to this back and forth. I’m 25, I can’t imagine getting a message like that from a kid and doing anything other than immediately leaving the conversation.”

Hmmm.

by Anonymousreply 3August 20, 2021 7:18 AM

This is a garbage story not quite at the level of the infamous failed babe.net Aziz Ansari takedown, but pretty close.

"I'm a victim, make me famous."

People are jerks. Grow up.

by Anonymousreply 4August 20, 2021 7:31 AM

"Ripley would also allegedly engage in sexual conversations with Brie Lynn, who admits that she would initiate those talks"

... says it all.

Who was grooming whom here?

"I'm going to entrap a Broadway star who is nuttier than a fruitcake so I can be internet-famous for a minute" seems like a typically logical millennial/Gen Z career plan.

by Anonymousreply 5August 20, 2021 7:35 AM

What he fuck? What did she do that was illegal? Why does this story exist?

I don't really know too much about Alice Ripley. I think I may have seen her in Sunset Boulevard. But if her career suffers due to THIS bullshit, I'm utterly astounded. It's like the James Franco accusations. Yes, sometimes actors are assholes. And horny. It's been that way since forever.

WHO GIVES A FUCK? Jesus Christ this is all so absurd.

by Anonymousreply 6August 20, 2021 7:36 AM

A lot of girls saying the same thing about “boundaries” and “trauma,” but no one alleges anything illegal. They freely admit they projected mother/sister relationships onto her.

They are all upset that she gave and withheld attention as she saw fit. Manipulative and needy? Maybe. That’s not abuse and it’s not grooming.

by Anonymousreply 7August 20, 2021 8:22 AM

I really can't believe the media is allowing themselves to be complicit in this bullshit.

Again, I don't really know Alice Ripley, so I'm not a fan. But, she's absolutely being railroaded here.

This is female adolescent hormones gone awry. Where the fuck are are their parents? She needs to be like Pence and always have a male assistant in the room when surrounded by female groupies.

If an adolescent is alluding to sex in front of you- and you do nothing, how is that grooming, being compliant or acquiescing? To accuse a minor is to insinuate somehow you had encouraged the behavior.

As an actor or celebrity I’d think the best thing to do is say nothing because it could be recorded and misconstrued, taken out of context, or patched together later to make you look guilty or bad.

by Anonymousreply 10August 20, 2021 8:53 AM

“Sexual harassment” is just a right-wing scare phrase used to intimidate people into voting for Republicans.

Who knew Alice Ripley was the R. Kelly of Broadway, she’s quite the gangsta!

by Anonymousreply 14August 20, 2021 10:00 PM

Did she really tweet that cigarette butt comment?

by Anonymousreply 15August 20, 2021 10:05 PM

Yeah I'm not seeing anything big here. Not to victim-shame but...if you chase a celeb who you sexualize because you're confused, um.....WTF does that have to do with the celeb?

Shit like this makes me understand why celebs panic and bolt from "fans" rather than make small talk.

....but of course we don't know what exactly Alice said or did. If she slept with any of them, she's toast.

It sounds pretty overwrought at the moment.

by Anonymousreply 16August 20, 2021 11:19 PM

I remember meeting some of her 'fans' a group of mentally ill young folks whom she was very kind to.

This is all about the mental illness of the girls.

by Anonymousreply 17August 21, 2021 8:26 AM

Young girls scorned and seeking attention. History repeating itself- willing to do anything for attention including destroying others.

by Anonymousreply 18August 21, 2021 8:41 AM

I'd be so creeped out if I had fans approaching me like that. To encourage it, even creepier. This girls are self-admittedly troubled.

by Anonymousreply 19August 21, 2021 8:53 AM

Ripley tried to be kind, it was less about encouragement and more about reaching out to clearly troubled kids.

by Anonymousreply 20August 21, 2021 11:05 AM

Kind? "Cigarette butt"?

by Anonymousreply 21August 21, 2021 12:00 PM

What’s her fan club called, “Alice’s Young Troubled Muffdivers?”

by Anonymousreply 22August 21, 2021 12:04 PM

So what exactly is Alice's crime?

Befriending these kids? Or ending the relationships?

We keep hearing that these were unhealthy relationships and Alice should not have ended them.

by Anonymousreply 23August 21, 2021 12:13 PM

This is why I block EVERY trans profile on Grindr. Oh, and the majority are ages 18-25, which people forget is an adult.

by Anonymousreply 24August 21, 2021 12:29 PM

I’m still worried if Jennifer had an unhealthy relationship with her in NtN, she was very young when she started?

by Anonymousreply 25August 21, 2021 12:32 PM

I'm with you, R18, and the Witch Trials was exactly what I was thinking of, too. Has it really come to this? " She comes to me while I sleep; She's always making me dream corruptions!"

by Anonymousreply 26August 21, 2021 12:39 PM

It's time for #MeToo to go after abusive women.

by Anonymousreply 27August 21, 2021 12:42 PM

“I saw Goodie Ripley cavorting with the Devil and young girls on Facebook!”

by Anonymousreply 28August 21, 2021 12:49 PM

She'll get away with this because she's a woman.

[quote] “I saw Goodie Ripley cavorting with the Devil and young girls on Facebook!”

And I saw Goodie Chenoweth fornicating out of wedlock with Aaron Sorkin.

by Anonymousreply 30August 21, 2021 12:55 PM

Does Ripley personally run her social media? Don’t they usually have assistants or something for that?

by Anonymousreply 31August 21, 2021 12:56 PM

Has Emily Skinner commented yet, or is she pulling a Susan Dey?

by Anonymousreply 32August 21, 2021 1:18 PM

*gasp* Drama on Broadway!

by Anonymousreply 33August 21, 2021 3:27 PM

These women are mentally ill. One of them even admits to being a borderline in the daily beast article.

Ripley’s mistake was having any contact with them at all. It probably came from a good place (or just needy) but you never befriend or even engage with a group of crazy teenage girls. Especially as an adult. She should have known better but actors have bad boundaries and like attention.

I read the twitter stuff they are posting and it’s all bullshit. She set boundaries when they became too much and they went nuts and called that trauma. One of them called it grooming because she came to NY for college and Ripley got her a winter coat because she didn’t have adequate clothes for the cold weather.

Ridiculous. You just cannot engage with fans. Never a good idea.

by Anonymousreply 34August 21, 2021 3:34 PM

Is the 21st Century version of Single White Female?

by Anonymousreply 35August 21, 2021 3:59 PM

I am standing 100% behind Alice Rickey, whoever she is.

by Anonymousreply 36August 22, 2021 12:18 AM

Ripley's deleted tweet shows that she's a nasty piece of work.

by Anonymousreply 37August 22, 2021 12:35 AM

None are alleging any sexual contact, attempt at sexual contact or any form of ACTUAL abuse. The 25 year old who started this expressed herself by lip syncing to a song? WTF? 25 fucking years old and she can't find her words? They should be sued for libel

by Anonymousreply 38August 22, 2021 12:46 AM

So.....her big crime was being a flaky actress type who had a bit of a narcissistic streak? Yawn. The young uns today have some great qualities ( a willingness to speak out about serious injustice) but they are way too sensitive to the idea of any imperfect relationship " destroying" them. Adults aren't perfect beings, that's a lesson every young person learns at some point.

by Anonymousreply 39August 22, 2021 12:48 AM

[quote] Ripley's deleted tweet shows that she's a nasty piece of work.

What does it say?

by Anonymousreply 40August 22, 2021 12:54 AM

Actually, it was an Instagram caption, which she later altered.

by Anonymousreply 41August 22, 2021 12:58 AM

That cigarette butt part... I can well believe Ripley is a sicko. That doesn't mean she laid a hand on these girls. But did she do damage to already vulnerable minors? It would not surprise me in the least.

by Anonymousreply 42August 22, 2021 12:59 AM

There is nothing wrong with the “cigarette butt” quote. Those fucked up, loony kids tried to ruin her—she doesn’t owe them politeness.

by Anonymousreply 43August 22, 2021 1:03 AM

The cigarette butt quote shows that power, hers over those girls, is very important to Miss Ripley.

by Anonymousreply 44August 22, 2021 1:05 AM

[Quote] There is nothing wrong with the “cigarette butt” quote. Those fucked up, loony kids tried to ruin her—she doesn’t owe them politeness.

Well, she changed the caption to "A beautiful world awaits." She knows she fucked up by letting the mask slip.

by Anonymousreply 45August 22, 2021 1:06 AM

As it should be, R44.

Once again—I stand firmly behind her, 100%.

by Anonymousreply 46August 22, 2021 1:06 AM

Are you a fan type as well?

by Anonymousreply 47August 22, 2021 1:09 AM

The cigarette tweet wasn't exactly restrained. And yeah Ripley is probably a typical unstable narc actress . But these young women are essentially trying to destroy her career. They know full well what people picture when they hear the words " grooming" and " teen girl" in the same sentence.

by Anonymousreply 48August 22, 2021 1:09 AM

I am actually very supportive of the me too movement that put an end to Harvey Weinstein and Scott Rudin. But if being a narcissist is going to get you cancelled. Broadway is going to be pretty fucking boring. Talented people tend to have a big impact on those around them. "Woke" casting has already given us some unfortunate casting decisions. We can't give up narcissists.

by Anonymousreply 49August 22, 2021 1:09 AM

The accusers seem to be most upset that Ripley finally set a boundary with them. And because there was nothing to get her with, they start using sexually charged language, describing their interactions as grooming.

Or they throw around the term "abusive," without actually specifying anything that sounds like abuse.

by Anonymousreply 50August 22, 2021 1:12 AM

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

by Anonymousreply 51August 22, 2021 1:14 AM

Yes, r48, the use of the word grooming is very manipulative on the accuser's part. I don't agree with trial by social media. That said, I think both sides need to get help.

by Anonymousreply 52August 22, 2021 1:15 AM

"Sexual harassment” is just a right-wing scare phrase used to intimidate people into voting for Republicans." I've read some crazy shit here but that might be the craziest. Repugs are covertly running the #metoo movement?

by Anonymousreply 53August 22, 2021 1:16 AM

I think the story that when one of them got a girlfriend, Ripley immediately dropped contact to curt responses is telling. Alice Ripley, or any adult, should not pursue friendships with minors. Do not go for "quick dinners" (another term that has warning bells sounding, for me) with them. Do not buy them winter coats. Do not DM with them.

by Anonymousreply 54August 22, 2021 1:18 AM

Miss Ripley is a red flag unto herself.

by Anonymousreply 55August 22, 2021 1:28 AM

R56 or it can be that when Ripley saw that these girls finally found support in their own lives, she bowed out.

by Anonymousreply 56August 22, 2021 2:12 AM

[quote] Brie Lynn told The Daily Beast that she had spent years healing from her relationship with Ripley and was moved to post the video after hearing Billie Eilish’s new song “Happier Than Ever” and feeling she could relate to it.

I’m sorry for the anguish this person is going through, but having a pop song reveal some long-buried truths strikes me as shallow with a streak of lack of emotional development. As others have said, how can parents be so unaware of this evolving entanglement.

by Anonymousreply 57August 22, 2021 2:25 AM

Brie Lynn is such a stupid fucking name.

Between that name and the idiotic tik tok she made…. Please. The girls all seemed like stalkers - obsessively coming to the stage door, seeing the show multiple times. Ripley should have never interacted with them but teenage girls can be manipulative too.

And so what re: the now deleted trash comment. Those women are trash.

by Anonymousreply 58August 22, 2021 3:58 AM

Of course lesbian drama .

by Anonymousreply 59August 22, 2021 4:48 AM

Is Ripley even a lez?

by Anonymousreply 60August 22, 2021 5:27 AM

[quote] "Sexual harassment” is just a right-wing scare phrase used to intimidate people into voting for Republicans." I've read some crazy shit here but that might be the craziest. Repugs are covertly running the #metoo movement?

Not only that, but I think the GOP was pulling the strings the entire feminist movement the whole time just to undermine it. Helen Reddy could only get cast in movies with right-wingers like Chuck Heston and Mickey Rooney. Betty Ford supported the ERA.

by Anonymousreply 61August 22, 2021 5:49 AM

"believe all women" is bullshit. If women were perfect beings, i'll believe all of them, but they're not. They're humans. Women can be oppurtunists, evil and sociopaths.

I cant imagine a bunch of sociopaths trying to ruin my career, my life because i wouldnt do what they wanted. And these girls are very charming sociopaths, they know all the right words to get people on their side.

Poor dear were "groomed", had no agency, as usual. Just "things" controlled by the evil abuser.

I mean it’s an embarrassingly small hill to die on. Who aside from a few middle aged gay men and some damaged teenage theater girls know or give a fuck about Alice fucking Ripley?

I do feel bad for her though as this is certain to destroy whatever is left of her middling career.

by Anonymousreply 77August 22, 2021 7:57 AM

Most people have an alice ripley type figure in their lives when they are young. Someone they adored or idolized who didn't feel quite as strongly about them or ultimately stay in their lives. That's life. But the vindictiveness and maudlin self pity these girls have over a sad but rather mundane live and learn experience is quite unsettling.

“The Devil made me do it!”

We had taken my mom to Salem Witch Museum while Trump was still in office and what I’ve realized is that even if you cornered these girls, like a lot of people throughout the ages, they would genuinely believe themselves to be in the right or quickly blame someone else for their predicament. But Trump opened the door to this generation’s “doubling down” with their beliefs and accusations.

I think these mentally girls - now fraus - have been quietly waiting for the perfect opportunity to seek revenge on Ripley for distancing herself. They are probably thrilled they get to ruin what’s left of her career. The #metoo variant of accusing anyone you want of abuse and ruining their life via tiktok and twitter is horrible.

And going forward, this is why fans should be kept out of backstage areas and why actors should feel free to skip that stage door shit. These are unstable people.

by Anonymousreply 88August 22, 2021 10:19 AM

The editors who allowed this piece to be published should be fired.

This is not newsworthy.

by Anonymousreply 89August 22, 2021 11:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 91August 22, 2021 3:47 PM

I find this fascinating because I was a teenage girl once, and know firsthand that teenage girls are the worst people ever. I also went to an all-girls boarding school and this is the type of shit that would happen every so often. Some weird girl would get a fixation. It was likely easier for a male teacher to rebuff and hold at arms-length. But I imagine the female teachers had a worse time fending it off. I can think of a few poor teachers who had this problem, who (I don’t think) were narcissists.

by Anonymousreply 96August 22, 2021 6:02 PM

You can bet good money that other Broadway performers are now making a mental note to not respond or converse with young fans EVER. Not worth it.

by Anonymousreply 97August 22, 2021 6:04 PM

It’s funny how they are saying they saw the crazy one’s tik tok and then all had trauma responses. In actuality, they probably all got wet with excitement because they realized they could re-engage with the object of their obsession from all those years ago.

This is some pretty twisted shit. Mentally ill former stalkers publicly accusing her of being a pedophile.

by Anonymousreply 98August 22, 2021 6:20 PM

R9y Lyin Cheese wrote a like 8 tweet dissertation on how performers can “appropriately” interact with young fans. I think Alice got too close and friendly, but holy shit she’s not Manson or that Smallville cult. It’s not worth getting close to fans. Be a cold bitch.

by Anonymousreply 116August 23, 2021 5:29 PM

I feel bad for Ms. Ripley. She should have been more aware and established boundaries earlier in these friendships. However, I can see how a busy, mildly narcissistic, and dramatically inclined adult might indulge in these relationships without considering the perspective of the teen admirers. The teens were a small part of her world while she was their whole world.

It appears Ms. Ripley may be guilty of poor judgment and some insensitivity but I would not call that abuse.

by Anonymousreply 117August 23, 2021 6:11 PM

Hopefully she can just quietly ride this out until the hysterical Broadway fraufans find another person to attack.

by Anonymousreply 125August 23, 2021 8:10 PM

By suggestive language, I mean she wasn't instigating. It sounds almost like the girls thought they were her friend and felt cold shouldered once things were over. I think they are more obsessed with her than vice versa.

by Anonymousreply 126August 23, 2021 8:12 PM

Yes r126 exactly. Her lapse in judgment was engaging with these lunatics.

by Anonymousreply 127August 23, 2021 8:13 PM

Supposedly the “victims” have posted “receipts” on Twitter in the form of screenshots. No idea where they are or how “incriminating” they are. The lesson to anyone encountering these chicks online should be, “Avoid these freaks at all costs. Do not hire them. Do not engage in conversation. Do not make eye contact.”

by Anonymousreply 128August 23, 2021 8:58 PM

R128, I agree. It’s borderline personality coupled with possible autism. Which is SUPER TOXIC combo

by Anonymousreply 129August 23, 2021 9:06 PM

R76 gives an example of the receipts that R128 is looking for.

All the responses to the tweet note how clearly traumatizing these interactions with Ripley were.

Is it a thank you note? Or is it grooming?

That is where we are.

Never piss off psycho, obsessed fans. It's the Crucible. Actually, don't ever engage them, ever.

Eminem is generally moronic, but I think he nailed this exact type of mentally ill obsessive stalker behavior in the very prescient song "Stan." Except now these types of lunatics aren't seen as mentally ill because of MeToo, they are "traumatized victims" who are "speaking their truth." It's pathetic a woman's career might be seriously harmed because of some autistic lesbos and their hurt feelings.

by Anonymousreply 143August 24, 2021 1:57 AM

I like how the girl replying in the Tweet thread at R134 insists that 16-year-old girls aren’t ever interested in dressing sexy, because when SHE was 16, she was running with her dog and being autistic.

Like, wow: *you*? Autistic? No way.

by Anonymousreply 144August 24, 2021 2:06 AM

Most 16 year old (straight) girls are obsessed with dressing sexy. And she didn’t truly ask that - she listed a bunch of style options and sexy was one of them.

These stupid bitches. I wish she could sue for libel.

by Anonymousreply 145August 24, 2021 2:32 AM

R141 yes. The smartest thing ripley could do is make a simple statement wishing them well with their lives and then say nothing. Just let them talk and talk and talk. Their neurosis and sexual paranoia is visible from outer space.

by Anonymousreply 146August 24, 2021 2:33 AM

From link at R154….

—— I found it important to do this because this is such a sensitive issue that deserves research. Because I’ve seen too many comments on social media that clearly didn’t perform due diligence and, instead, simply (and disgustingly) diminished these young people. When I see comments like that, I shudder to think what it’s going to take for victims in this industry to be believed by this industry. —-

This is just outrageous. These borderlines are not VICTIMS. Ripley is the victim of having a group of lunatics destroy her career.

by Anonymousreply 156August 24, 2021 8:04 PM

The person who wrote that article at R154 is known far and wide to be a reckless, shit-stirring idiot desperate for attention. He should have been sued for libel long ago, and we can only hope that will happen now.

by Anonymousreply 157August 24, 2021 8:20 PM

It seems obvious what happened here. Alice Ripley had some devoted fans, and she thought it would be fun to be a mentor. After a while, she saw mentoring these girls was a lot less fun and a lot more work than she realized, so she ghosted them. She started out with good intentions, and then realized it was all too much for her.

by Anonymousreply 158August 24, 2021 8:21 PM

[Quote] She started out with good intentions, and then realized it was all too much for her.

No. The fact that she used the word "discarded" ("discarded cigarette butt" to boot!) shows that this was all a power trip for her. I can understand being enraged over the TikTok etc. but she told on herself with that Instagram caption. She did not have good intentions.

by Anonymousreply 162August 25, 2021 3:03 AM

[quote]Yeah, I HATE that piece of garbage who writes that blog at [R154]. He should be ended, but no one actually reads him.

You're absolutely right, and that's the paradox: He's such a hateful piece of shit that he should definitely be ended, but it does seem that no one actually reads him until someone links to his garbage. When I do read his bullshit, I hope for him to be jailed or at least put out of business, but the reason that doesn't happen is that he has such an incredibly low profile. So I guess I'm glad for that in one way but sorry in another.

by Anonymousreply 163August 25, 2021 3:04 AM

I happen to know (second hand) that Ripley has reached out to young female fans in crisis, but as far as I know, there was no shady shit involved.

I'm unclear about the exact allegations?? This is really a stretch insofar as a legit scandal.

by Anonymousreply 164August 25, 2021 3:13 AM

I don’t think it was a conscious power trip at the time…. she was playing a mother in a show that appealed to a lot of mentally ill needy teenage girls, she was apparently offering them advice on clothing and getting them winter coats and responding to them on Facebook and taking pictures with them backstage. None of that seems very power trippy? Just poor boundaries with crazy fans.

The recent Instagram caption was bitchy but she’s an emotional actress type and got pissed because some formwe fangirl likened her to a pedophile.

Also if you look at Brie Lynn and her tiktok - she IS somewhat similar to a discarded cigarette butt… nasty analogy but not that far off base…

by Anonymousreply 165August 25, 2021 3:27 AM

Oh, it's not far off base. Quite the opposite: It's telling about how Ripley viewed her.

She never kept it calm and gentle. Even in Sunset Boulevard, she's belting and giving it all...for...what? Betty Shafer? What kind of a role is that to go all-in for? She should have learned to spare her voice a bit.

She does seem mentally off, like many actresses I suppose, but she never sexed them so...not much for these girls to do here except shame her for toying with and feeding off the vulnerable. Which, if she weren't famous, would land her no negative attention at all. It happens. Even on social media apps.

She wasn't a guidance counselor. Someone should have told these girls.

Also - how does one have $$$ for a ticket to a huge Broadway smash show....but not for a winter coat?

by Anonymousreply 229December 28, 2021 11:28 PM

I was wondering how she was doing after all this shit.

Her career could recover from the scandal but it would take a good decade and honestly, her voice is too damaged for her to book a gig as a singer. Even if this hadn't happened, she would have struggled to work outside of maybe teaching or booking acting-only roles.

Its awful how vocalists give their all in a show and then win a Tony....but can end up broke and struggling a few short years later. The voice is so fragile. As you age and perform, it withers.

Not everyone can be Patti Lupone, belting into her 60s. Most lose what they have by their 40s or 50s. It's a shame.

Eden Espinosa had an incredible voice and now it's seemingly half what it was. She dodges high notes all the time. How can she build her career with a fading instrument?

Anyway, this GoFundMe thing is sad. Hope Alice makes some clever career moves because this isn't a good place to be in.

James Barbour bounced back from his scandalous interaction with a teen that was far more serious than this. He worked after the accusations were made and he worked after he served his sentence. He starred in Phantom on broadway for crissskes. But that was a different time wasn’t it? What a difference a few years and a lot of wokeness can make.

Broadway Actor Pleads Guilty to Backstage Sex Act With Girl, 15, in 2001

By Anemona Hartocollis Jan. 4, 2008 . NYTimes A Broadway actor admitted on Thursday that in 2001 he seduced a 15-year-old girl who visited him backstage, and agreed as part of a plea bargain to reveal that admission to anybody he works for in film, television or theater for up to the next three years.

The actor, James Barbour, was accused of having criminal sexual contact with a high school student who was an aspiring actress when she attended a performance of “Jane Eyre” in June 2001.

The student’s drama teacher arranged for her to visit the Brooks Atkinson Theater with her parents. Mr. Barbour told Justice Micki A. Scherer of State Supreme Court in Manhattan that the girl visited him in his dressing room before the final curtain call and that he fondled her, knowing that she was only 15 years old.

He also told the judge that he had oral sex with the girl in his apartment the next month. She did not come forward with her account for several years.

Under the negotiated deal, Mr. Barbour, 41, pleaded guilty to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors, in exchange for a promise that he would be sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years’ probation.

Mr. Barbour’s lawyer, Ronald Fischetti, said his client accepted the deal because if a jury had convicted him of the original felony sex charges against him he would have been forced to register as a sex offender, “which basically would have ended his career.”

His lawyer said that the prosecutor’s agreement to a misdemeanor plea showed the weaknesses of its case. But Mr. Barbour had to agree to a lengthy series of conditions of probation that are very similar to those that apply to convicted sex offenders.

While he is on probation, he must inform the manager, producer or assistant director of any theatrical, film or television project he works in that he has been convicted of endangering the welfare of a child, “having engaged in oral sexual conduct and sexual contact with a 15-year-old child.”

In a signed statement to the police in April 2006, Mr. Barbour said that he was just acting as a mentor to the girl, that he had done no more than touch her knees and kiss her and that he thought that she was 16.

But in court on Thursday when asked by Justice Scherer, “Were you aware of her exact age?” Mr. Barbour replied, “Yes.”

“What was that age?” Justice Scherer pressed.

“Fifteen,” he replied.

At least one Broadway veteran said on Thursday that Mr. Barbour, who played the Beast in “Beauty and the Beast” for about one year, might find himself less marketable for family-friendly shows for awhile.

“I think if he did a show with adults, he might be entitled to a second chance,” said Emanuel Azenberg, a Broadway producer. “‘Sweeney Todd,’ O.K. But even then I certainly wouldn’t put it in the bio.”

by Anonymousreply 233December 29, 2021 5:24 PM

Saying on Thursday that those conditions could turn out to be “a big price to pay,” Mr. Azenberg said producers might be concerned about the moral and legal liability involved in casting an actor convicted of endangering a child.

Producers could be wary of financial and artistic repercussions, he said, because casting directors would feel obliged to reveal Mr. Barbour’s conviction to the parents of any children who might audition for a show, “and then your casting choices would be compromised.”

But Jay Binder, a casting director who said he had begun Mr. Barbour’s career by casting him in “Beauty and the Beast,” said he would make decisions based on talent.

“James Barbour is a first-rate Broadway leading man,” Mr. Binder said. “If he were the actor that the entire creative staff agreed upon, there would be no professional reason not to hire James Barbour.”

Mr. Fischetti said he expected his client, who will be sentenced next month, to be out of jail in time to perform in “A Tale of Two Cities” if it comes to New York. Mr. Barbour played Sidney Carton during a pre-Broadway tryout in Florida last year. The producers of the show declined to comment on Thursday.

He said Mr. Barbour was recently married in a civil ceremony — his wife accompanied him to court on Thursday — and was planning a formal wedding in Hawaii. Mr. Fischetti said the woman Mr. Barbour was convicted of endangering is now an actress

by Anonymousreply 234December 29, 2021 5:25 PM

Barbour's casting was indeed a scandal, with fans protesting outside Phantom with signs. It wasn't that long ago and it was viewed as inappropriate, especially given the predatory character he was playing. I doubt he'll have a free pass from here on out.

The only things that *kinda* saved him were A) he was honest and did his time, B) he's a white straight male so the Old Boys Club could understand his error in judgment (and mentally high five him for getting some?) and C) he csn really sing the part.

I think C was the big factor. No one can say he sang a bad Phantom.

...Ripley doesn't have the voice for much anymore. I was excited to hear she'd finally play Norma D a few years ago, since she played Betty in the OG production of Sunset. Then I heard a bootleg. She sounded warbling and hoarse. It was sad.

With no amazing voice anymore to overshadow her "transgressions" and a lesbian theme to them and much speculation about her involvement with young fans...she won't bounce back easily.

Plus, she's always seemed off in how she speaks and acts. And she famously played a crazy lady, who people identify her as....

Playing crazy/temperamental characters on Broadway seems not to work out too well for the Divas (Patti, Betty, Jennifer H, Alice R). People think that's their real personality.

Hope she has real estate or something.

[quote]It's awful how vocalists give their all in a show and then win a Tony....but can end up broke and struggling a few short years later. The voice is so fragile. As you age and perform, it withers.

I don't know what you're talking about.
