Any baseball fans here?

I am a huge baseball fan and since Covid last year I've become an even more rabid viewer, but I can't find anyone to talk baseball with.

All my gay friends make jokes like "Is that the one with touchdowns?"

Any gay baseball fans out there?

by Anonymousreply 123December 18, 2021 6:26 PM

So... you spend hours and hours watching something that takes less than a minute of replays to showcase the entire game.

No thanks

by Anonymousreply 1August 18, 2021 8:57 PM

OP, there is usually at least one baseball thread here each season although this year’s didn’t seem to take off. There are a few of us here who are baseball fans. The discussion ranges from the looks of the players to the game itself.

by Anonymousreply 2August 18, 2021 9:14 PM

I'm fine discussing both, R2!

They all have horrible gigantic beards now.

by Anonymousreply 4August 18, 2021 9:20 PM

Some of them do, but not too many. I follow one National League team and one American League team, so I get to see most of the teams play during the season. There are some major cuties on the Rangers, the Blue Jays, Atlanta, and the Mariners.

by Anonymousreply 5August 18, 2021 9:22 PM

I'm a forever fan of Mr. Brady Anderson.

OP when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s I was a huge Tigers fan! It was fun going to the games because we could sit in the bleachers for cheap. My mother would take me because she liked to eat all the junk food at the ball park. I think she also like to look at nice butts in baseball pants!

As I got older I found I don’t have much time to watch sports. Also I prefer football and basketball now. But I still try to keep up and watch baseball from time to time. I do enjoy the playoffs. I follow the Tigers and the Dodgers. Who are your teams?

by Anonymousreply 7August 18, 2021 9:42 PM

Yes, OP.

Huge baseball fan here.

by Anonymousreply 8August 18, 2021 10:03 PM

I follow the Mets and Mariners, R7. Been a Mets fan since I was a little kid. Been an on and off Mariners fan for nearly 20 years. My first trip to Seattle, I went by the park and had a very weird de ja vu, and then remembered that I used to root for the Mariners when I was little and would stay with my aunt and uncle. My uncle was a big Yankees fan and I hated the Yankees, so I would always root for the opposing team and got to love the Mariners but had forgotten about it.

I also like (but don't root for) the Braves and the Rays. And I try to keep up with the Orioles because I really like Trey Mancini.

by Anonymousreply 9August 18, 2021 10:10 PM

There’s a lot more to baseball than meets the eye. People just think you just gotta hit the ball where the defense isn’t and that’s all you need to do. There’s a lot of intricate things a casual fan will not know about. Like pitchers using substances to increase their spin rates. What do you guys think of this controversy?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 10August 18, 2021 10:18 PM

I love baseball, but haven't watched any this year. I grew up as a Rangers fan and used to watch them on TV throughout the summer. Their games are carried on Bally Sports (formerly Fox Sports), but I can't get that channel on YouTube TV. So I haven't seen any games in a while. In addition to the Rangers, I'm also a fan of the Dodgers, the Pirates and whichever team is playing against the Yankees, Red Sox or Braves.

by Anonymousreply 11August 18, 2021 10:18 PM

[quote] Like pitchers using substances to increase their spin rates. What do you guys think of this controversy?

R10, you’ll find that many DL posters are in favor of sticky stuff in general.

by Anonymousreply 12August 18, 2021 10:26 PM

I used to make it a project each year to go through all the rosters and find out who was hot. I also searched Getty Images looking for the best butts. Twenty years ago it made sense, because there were tons of nice butts, but now I hardly ever find one. Nothing since Anthony Recker, really (I haven't looked in the past couple of years).

by Anonymousreply 13August 18, 2021 10:56 PM

Tigers fan here too. Waiting for Miguel Cabrera to hit his 500th homerun!!

by Anonymousreply 14August 18, 2021 10:57 PM

Baseball is too slow moving for my likes. I prefer football or hockey. Basketball is ok, but makes me dizzy.

by Anonymousreply 15August 18, 2021 11:00 PM

Hockey and American football are too fast and violent for my tastes. I like the slow pace of baseball.

by Anonymousreply 16August 18, 2021 11:11 PM

I think for a lot of people, who never go to baseball games in person, they find it boring. On television is just isn’t the same.

In person though, it is a blast.

by Anonymousreply 17August 18, 2021 11:14 PM

I find that once you really start following a team, it's more exciting and involving than just watching a game casually (meaning on television, not in person).

by Anonymousreply 18August 18, 2021 11:31 PM

Absolutely, baseball is about the season, not a random game. It's better on AM radio because you get the ambience and don't have to look at the greasy redneck players.

The Twins have been largely bad the last ten plus years with the exception of a handful of seasons like 2019 which seemed to be a career year for most of the team, so they have been a little harder to follow. Still, I always hope next year will be the year.

On a superficial level, I still miss the Mauer/Morneau/Cuddyer era (and Johan and Nick Punto...)

Like R35, I got into baseball after seeing a clip on the local evening news and thinking, Who's that?! (It was Tim Naehring of the Red Sox, waaaay back in the day). So I started watching baseball only to find there were other hot players (not as many as I'd hoped, but still), like Cal Ripken and Brady Anderson and Joe Mauer and, well, I could go on. Fenway's tough to get a ticket to, but I'd go a few times a year. Then I moved to the Bay Area -- two baseball teams to follow! -- and continued to watch games on TV and even got a small season-ticket Giants package with a friend (Candlestick: the Worst).

You know what killed my enjoyment of baseball, at least on TV? TV technology. I hate the on-screen strike-zone box (I have eyes, I can tell where it is!). The box up in the corner that tells you everything you need to know -- the score, the pitch count, pitch speed, etc. -- completely eliminates the need for the on-air announcers and commentators, who now largely just blather on about some child eating an ice cream cone in the stands or yap about their own kids or some other nonsense. So I'd watch with the sound off while doing something else. It wasn't long before I stopped watching at all. And the endless, endless games! Three hours-plus! No, just no.

That said, if anyone says they have an extra ticket to a game and would I like to go, I'll gladly go (at least in pre-pandemic times). I just can't watch baseball on TV for more than 15 minutes anymore without wanting to throw something at the screen or yell at the announcers to either shut up or focus on the game. Happily, I discovered Premier League soccer -- also lotsa hot guys and a match is over in under two hours so you can be about your business again.

by Anonymousreply 38August 23, 2021 6:49 PM

Mets fan here, although they're having their annual post-All-Star-break free-fall right now, so it's not so gratifying to be a fan at the moment.

[quote] Mets fan here, although they're having their annual post-All-Star-break free-fall right now, so it's not so gratifying to be a fan at the moment.

Boy, do they need to clean house in the off-season, starting with that useless manager. I can't wait to see him and Alderson go, and then have the new team dump Smith, McNeil, Davis, Conforto and Familia. (There are others I'd love to see go like McCann and several pitchers, but that's not gonna happen.)

by Anonymousreply 41August 23, 2021 7:04 PM

Mets fan at R39, did you see DL fave Anthony Recker play? If so what are your thoughts about him?

by Anonymousreply 42August 23, 2021 7:04 PM

[quote] You know what killed my enjoyment of baseball, at least on TV? TV technology. I hate the on-screen strike-zone box (I have eyes, I can tell where it is!). I find I'm able to tune out the announcers when needed. I just don't listen. It also enables me to sharpen my concentration on what's going on on the field. I like statcast and all the graphics because they're there when I need them, but they're so small that I wonder how you wind up focusing on them when there's so much else to look at.

by Anonymousreply 43August 23, 2021 7:07 PM

I agree, r43. I’ve lost track of the count, number of outs, etc. and find that little box helpful.

by Anonymousreply 45August 23, 2021 7:52 PM

Alas, I never saw Recker play for the Mets--I don't even associate him with the team, he passed through so quickly. (I'm surprised former Mets captain David Wright is not a DL fave--he's married w/kids now that he's finally retired, but he always pinged to high heaven to me).

As to the current roster--I hope they DO NOT cut Jeff McNeil! (he has such hillbilly appeal, I find "Squirrel" very appealing, and most of the time, he delivers the hits and comes through in a clutch in a way that too few of their players do!). And I would hate to see Conforto go--his offensive slump this year is breaking my heart, but I'm coming around to acceptance that they won't re-sign him after this season. People are "afraid" that he (Conforto) will do what Daniel Murphy did for the Nationals, going on to huge success with another team.

I had thought Dom Smith would be an easy trade now that Baez and Lindor (who has obviously underperformed in a big way, but the Mets are on the hook to pay him a shitload) are in the in-field. McNeil could move to LF, and maybe Dom Smith would be traded.

I read that earlier this season, when the team was dealing with so many injuries, they "approached" Yoenis Cespedes (who they are still paying) to see if he might be interested in coming back to play, and he said no. His prerogative, I suppose, but what a dick.

I would like to see Luis Rojas get another chance to lead this team. I think the Mets run through their managers too quickly.

by Anonymousreply 46August 23, 2021 11:12 PM

I get MLB.TV just to watch every Recker game! Made lots of caps (see above). But that darn Travis d'Arnaud kept getting all the games.

by Anonymousreply 47August 23, 2021 11:29 PM

I adored Dom Smith the past couple seasons. He had heart and fire and you really rooted for him, even when he didn't play well. This season he's been an absolute drag. He plays like he'd rather be anywhere else. He always has a mope on his face and he looks bored and annoyed. Plus he's playing dreadfully. I really believe he is miserable playing for the Mets. It's time for him to go.

I like Jeff McNeill, but he's dead weight.

I would love to see McCann go. He's a crappy hitter, a so-so catcher, he has a super annoying habit of grabbing his balls every time he's up to bat, and I don't understand why we paid $40m for him. Nido is a much better catcher, he's got a much higher percentage of getting base stealers out and pitchers like him catching for them more than they do McCann. Nido is one of my favorite players on the team.

It kills me that they got rid of Billy McKinney, and as much as I hate the Dodgers, I hope he thrives there. I've been enjoying watching The Mariners, especially as they picked up a lot of Mets castoffs who are really prospering in Seattle, especially Flexen and Kelenic.

I'd also like to see them get rid of Rich Hill (or Over the Hill, as I call him). The guy is terrible, he has no business starting, he looks like he'd rather be on the couch taking a nap, and his last start, he pitched two home runs in his first three pitches. Not innings, PITCHES.

Rojas has had two seasons to prove his worth. The Mets can't afford another year of him sucking.

by Anonymousreply 48August 23, 2021 11:42 PM

I agree that they should have held on to McKinney. The new guys Drury and Mazeika, I fear, are destined for similar premature trades. But still don't agree that McNeil is deadweight! - he hits the ball and is a versatile multi-position player. The Mets are so plagued by injuries (and high-salary malingerers, imo, like Lindor and Cespedes) that they need players they can move around, and McNeil is *it* for them. I think he was spooked by the surprise trade for Javier Baez and feels the heat is on him to deliver.

Also, I am seriously turned off by reports that Lindor, of all people, is "influential in the front office." That's the word! How does this guy get to throw weight around in the FO??!! $341 million, he spectacularly fails to deliver, and somehow he's in a position to tell Steve Cohen's people who to hire and fire? Cookies are for closers!!!!

Although the rumor is also that he and Jeff McNeil don't get along, so maybe, somehow, some inexplicably stupid way, a word from Lindor is enough to put an end to McNeil's time with the Mets. I love the team and can't really root for anyone else, but honestly, if they do this, they deserve what they get.

I think Conforto is handsome and think it's hilarious that his fiancee's name is Cabernet Burns.

by Anonymousreply 49August 24, 2021 12:19 AM

OMG- I laughed my ass off when I saw his fiancee's name. I make fun of it all the time with my Mets pals.

I don't know that I necessarily believe Lindor is responsible for Baez in that Lindor said- do you want me to be happy, then get Baez. I think Baez was the best of what the FO was willing to do in terms of the players who actually did not reject them outright. (Max S., anyone?) I think a LOT of Mets fans have hated Lindor since his deal was announced. They felt the FO paid far too much for him (I agree) and then his piss poor performance for most of the season just enraged them further. I was super annoyed by how badly he played, but I liked his demeanor and the way he tried to encourage the team so while I was very disappointed in his abilities, I didn't hate him like I do some others on the team. I also wouldn't be sad to see him go, but I can live with him.

I would toss every reliever except Diaz, Loup, Smith and maybe Lugo. Lose Familia, lose Castro, lose May, lose em all.

I'd ditch Walker, Hill, Carrasco and Yamamoto. If you had asked me a couple months ago, I'd have thrown Peterson and Lucchesi in there, but they were starting to improve when they both went down with injuries, so I'd be curious to see how they do when they're healed. Keep DeGrom, Megill, Stroman (though he's an asshole), maybe Trevor Williams, and tell Syndergaard to shit or get off the pot already. I've pitched more than he has in the past three years, and not on the Mets' dime.

I love Baez so far. He's been hit or miss, but he hasn't played that much and he's done more good than bad. And honestly, he's earned my good will for the rest of the season, no matter what happens, after that play where he stole home and got in safe. That was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my life. And he's done lots more.

Villar and Pillar I could take or leave. Same with Guillorme. I like Peraza and would like to see him stay. He's fucked up now and then, but he's also done a lot more good than some of the regulars. Keep Drury and give him a regular slot. If it comes to Mazeika or Nido, sorry Pat, nice knowing you. Keep Nido.

Try watching a couple Mariners games. You would love Kelenic. And they have a really good rookie pitcher named Logan Gilbert who I think has the stuff to be really big. And they also have a good share of hot guys. Ty France, Luis Torrens, Cal Raleigh, Mitch Haniger, Marco Gonzales (another fantastic pitcher), Drew Steckenrider, hot daddy Kyle Seager, etc. And I like all their players except for this horrible reliever they just acquired, Diego Castillo. I cannot believe they traded hot, gorgeous (and talented) reliever J.T. Chargois to the Rays for this dipshit.

by Anonymousreply 50August 24, 2021 12:58 AM

Kyle Seager hot??? He looks like the noid from the old Domino's ads. He got all the bad genes in that family meanwhile his brother Corey is gorgeous, tall and has a nice fat ass to go with his thick DL thighs.

I've only favorited this thread for that, R57. And I offered up Brady Anderson above. So I've done my part.

by Anonymousreply 58August 24, 2021 11:52 AM

I think Syndergaard is headed for a "Dark Knight"-style fall from favor. I think the Matt Harvey debacle has cast a shadow on Mets pitchers who may have relished the spotlight a little too much.

I love deGrom and can't deny that I have indulged the thought that he could be a Seaver-level pitcher. Shallowly, I preferred him with long hair. I think the "Wild Man" look really worked for deGrom.

In non-Mets news, I love Shohei Ohtani and think he's bringing some genuine, much-needed excitement and unusual talent to the field. And, say what you will about the more cynical aspects of the game (I can't deny them, either), but the inspirational stories in baseball still move me. Trey Mancini in the finals of the Home Run Derby. Or Freddie Freeman (who can never be my favorite MLB 1st baseman because of the Mets' Pete Alonso) recovering from severe covid and coming back to post fantastic numbers this season.

BTW, has it been established and/or quietly acknowledged that Sandy Koufax is gay?

Trey Mancini is a hero of mine. I had the same cancer he did, same stage, same everything, and it means a lot that he was able to battle back from it and be so successful. I was actually rooting for him to beat Alonso in the derby.

And how can you not love Freeman? He's fantastic. If I wasn't a Mets fan, I would probably be a Braves fan. I always enjoy seeing them play the Mets, though.

And as for cuties, Ty France is a little pocket hottie with great thighs and a wonderful ass, neither of which are on display on the internet.

I was a big Cleveland Indians fan back in the early days of Jacob's Field. I've kind of lost track of it over the years.

Lake Bell looks like a butch. Why the fuck does a gay even care.

If you'd read the thread, you'd know why, fuckface.

R101, Dansby is married and is also a Jesus freak. (And I am going to guess is also an anti-vaxxer.) But he's a somewhat decent ballplayer and is gorgeous to look at.

I have found a lot of ballplayers are anti-vaxxers, and several of the players who have been vaxxed don't like to talk about it for fear of alienating a portion of their fan base. I tried earlier this year to suss out which Mets had been vaxxed and which had not been and was disappointed to find out that a large portion of them were not. And even Pete Alonso, who is, and who was part of a campaign encouraging vaccinations, said he didn't want to discuss it.

I utterly despise their manager Luis Rojas and I'm not that big a fan of their new $341m man Francisco Lindor, but both were publicly vaccinated to help encourage people to do so and that went a long way in my book.

Why the fuck is that hunk of burning love doing getting married when he can be pulling pussy from every direction. Straight guys are so fucking stupid. He just stopped being hot. Fucking waste

by Anonymousreply 105August 30, 2021 5:32 AM

Most baseball players are married and married young, saddled with kids. I don't get it, either. Why the hell would you want to tie yourself down to some frau when you could be spreading your cock everywhere without fear of getting caught and taken for half your money?

by Anonymousreply 106August 30, 2021 5:35 AM

DL who is the cute pitcher mentioned. I saw a picture and he's adorable. What do we know?

by Anonymousreply 107August 30, 2021 5:39 AM

That Dansby guy guy is too hot to br wasting his time on fraus. Please.

by Anonymousreply 108August 30, 2021 5:46 AM

I don't know much about Max Fried, R107. He's older than he looks. He's 27. Single. Jewish. Has already had Tommy John surgery.

Javier Baez's hustle caps Mets' rally in improbable win over Marlins

The baseball gods performed their finest work on Tuesday as the Mets, down two runs, put two on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for ... Javier Báez. Two days after his comments that appeared to call out fans, he received a direct opportunity for redemption.

With the game on the line, Báez grounded one to shortstop and beat out the throw at first base to score a run and keep the Mets alive. Moments later, he went from first to home when Michael Conforto lined a single to left field and Marlins left fielder Jorge Alfaro.

The Mets, who trailed by four runs in the ninth, scored five and won, 6-5.

Blah, blah, blah, the guys in the picture don't even have nice butts.

by Anonymousreply 112August 31, 2021 11:21 PM

We still hate Javier Baez and can't wait to send his ass packing.

How did the anti-vaxxer spend his birthday?

I am OP. Just watched my Dodgers inch by the Braves.

And by doing so? We FINALLY took over first place from the asshole Giants.

by Anonymousreply 115September 2, 2021 6:49 AM

I am NOT a Dodgers fan, but since I live in LA, I am friends with a lot of Dodgers fans so I try to just not care about them instead of hate them like I do the Yankees and the Phillies. The only reason you guys are winning is because you got some great players in the trade deadline (and a little earlier) including my precious Billy McKinney.

I really like the Braves. If I didn't already follow one National team and one American team, I would follow them. I can barely keep up with watching all the games from two teams and I think the only reason I have it down is because I have extra time due to Covid.

by Anonymousreply 116September 2, 2021 7:12 AM

LoL Barves! :)

by Anonymousreply 117September 2, 2021 8:45 PM

I love it when a team will dom me with their feet and cocks.

by Anonymousreply 118September 3, 2021 2:26 AM

Gotta say here that I'm happy for the Braves. It was great seeing Soler get the Series MVP nod, witnessing the pitching heroics of Charlie Morton and Max Fried, and seeing Freddie Freeman's cheesy Ken-Doll grin last night when it was all over.

A little awkward that they had to clinch it in Houston, but so it goes.

Lifelong Red Sox fan here. Also like following the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles from my time in the D.C. area. I'm liking the new pickup from this season, teddy-bearish Kyle Schwarber.

Mets hire Buck Showalter as manager. No surprise there.
