He developed "a bit of a bond" with his brother Josh, who's two years older, he recalled to TODAY Parents, the first time he shared his story with media in detail.

When Mzi's mom died of an illness, his care fell to his grandmother, at least at first.

"That's when my parents now almost saw it, in a nice way, as a bit of a sign for them to take me in because I'd already been spending so much time with the family," he said. "I got to have the best of my grandmother and the best of having an actual family."

As a result of what he's been through, he "(places) family very highly," he explained. "I just try to be as grateful as possible for every opportunity that presents itself because I know, coming from where I came from to where I am today ... I owe it all to my family."

Dempers is the youngest of five. His oldest brother is about 50, there's another who's around 47, a sister who's 40 and then Josh, 29.

"Our ages are all so different, so when we were growing up, it was really just myself and Josh. My older siblings would pop back every now and then," he said. "Since we've all grown up, when we do get the time, it's (as if) we're the same age, a bunch of children together trying to have a good time. It really is incredible."

He used to see his oldest brother and sister, both based in Cape Town, for dinner every other week, but that changed when the pandemic hit. His two middle brothers both work in yachting, as well, and they haven't been home for three years.

Thinking about his childhood, Dempers is quick to reflect on being the only Black person in most situations. His dad has told him stories about having to "defend" him, and once, when he wore dreadlocks to his private school, a decision his father supported, Dempers ended up in tears because the kids laughed at him. His brother was quick to call out his friends whenever they used racial slurs.

"It's not something that people were used to seeing," Dempers recalled of the dreadlocks, adding that a lot of people "didn't really understand" why his parents adopted him in the first place. "Everybody in relatively privileged societies has their own take as to what's right and what's wrong. My parents had to deal with a lot."

That said, he's never felt awkward within his family because of his race. The only struggle was when he was first adopted, he was initially hesitant to call his mom "mom" because he'd just lost his biological one. Three to four years passed before he finally started doing so.

In fact, he looks up to his siblings so much that he decided to follow the same career path as two of them. "With my two brothers that have been yachting, just them coming home and seeing them progress from strength to strength within their careers was quite mind-opening," he said.

The boating lifestyle has brought him closer to his brothers, but Dempers' parents find it "a little bit upsetting" that he's home so much less because he's "the last little egg to leave" the nest, he joked.

Maybe I've watched too much reality TV, but that seems a bit contrived: a nightmare of a person shows up to wreak havoc and create big time drama, while making an otherwise unlikeable person (Malia) shine. Then poof - they're gone & a replacement is waiting in the wings! Presto!

As others have noted, it's fake as fuck that she'd be allowed to continue given her behavior, but she seems like that weird Russian chef from a couple of seasons ago: someone who's sole purpose is to set up some other storyline

If the person put in quarantine could function as a replacement stew OR a replacement deckhand then it’s not all that contrived especially If someone quits or is injured and they would have to wait 2 weeks for a replacement.

While Matthew has changed his mindset completely after being given a second chance, that stupid bitch Lexi still doesn't care. Matthew has the right attitude. He knows he's lucky to be there, he seems genuinely happy. Also, he can actually cook. Lexi on the other hand is a lost case.

I think Lexi cares most about enacting some kind of revenge against poor hapless Katie, when she's a sweetheart compared to Kate or Hanner. While I think the producers have done a reasonably credible job of rehabbing Malia, who actually looks like a pretty good boss & was tactful with the unfortunate deckhand that had a crush on her, Captain Shandy's insistence on Katie babysitting an extremely toxic employee makes her look even more delusional than usual. Captain Lee might have counseled Katie that firing an employee during a pandemic would be problematic, but ultimately he has no use for people with bad attitudes & poor work ethics (lucky for Riley she had a good work ethic or she would've been toast)

I hope they have a reunion.

At the risk of defending Shandy encouraging Katie to make it work with Lexi I think the pandemic had everything to do with her decision. She wanted to keep the peace at least until the replacement stew was out of quarantine.

Interesting that Lexi is barely featured in the new mid season promo except to make yet another scene at dinner. This is turning out to be a very enjoyable shitshow of a season.

This charter was kind of humorous.

Captain Sandy is showing zero leadership by not supporting or trusting Katie in any of her decisions. Katie is also letting herself be pushed around by Lexi and Delaney when they fight back.

Poor Katie has turned into some kind of management case study scenario. By failing to address a root cause issue (Lexie's bad attitude & poor performance), she's created a number of issues (3rd stew feeling demoted, bad morale over cabin moves, a stew that isn't really a stew). If she'd nut up & address the issue with Lexie, she could fire her & promote Welsh chick to 2nd, making her happy & improving her performance and eliminating the need to further cut tips. While she's posturing about how smart she is, Delaney doesn't seem incapable of doing the job.

This was another boring season. If Lexi hadn't been cast as a villain it would have been even worse. When they have such a boring crew, they should focus more on the actual ship and what it takes to operate it.

Lmao they are replaying the one where Lloyd gets yelled at--then suddenly is sick! I've seen this sickness before, in my millennial peer group and only among the women and drama Queens. The correct decision was to let Lloyd go work in a garden or on a fishing boat--something a bit simpler for a simpler person.

Oddly I found the lack of drama appealing. It was refreshing to see a group of yachties who actually like each other (except for mega cunt Lexi). It allowed for a nice contrast with the entailed guests for once. That last charter group was an nightmare.

Thoughts from reunion:

Malia really hates Sandy. I ended up liking Sandy more than I thought. Matt is an unreliable loser, who proved he is a loser further on the reunion. Courtney is a legit travesty drunk, not a fun drink like aesha. Avoid! The rest are losers and next season better be more entertaining.

I liked Sandy and Malia this season much more than I thought I would. I know they took a lot of heat for the Hannah situation but Hannah was always a 100% royal cunt when she was on the show so, as far as I’m concerned, she got what she deserved.

Sandy was let off easy for not firing Lexi. All she said was that if she had seen the video she would have fired her. But she couldn’t trust the words of her two highest-ranking employees?

I also find it hard to believe she was unaware Production had to restrain Lexi the first night.

Captain Sandy says that she has over 30 years of sobriety. She had multiple car accidents, jail time, etc while drinking. Do you think she could keep it under control enough to be drinking on this show? It seems like it would be difficult for a die hard alcoholic to moderate enough for this level of public attention. Someone would’ve snitched on her by now.

I'm not sure about getting what is *deserved*, by Hannah was a toxic person, clearly over the whole thing, who bullied a number of other weaker types and got away with it because she was good TV. When Bugs showed up, she knew she was toast and it was only a matter of time before she was fired for one thing or another. I don't feel bad for her and I think that Malia saw the writing on the wall that if she didn't change the perception people had of her, she'd be the next one being escorted off for one thing or another.

So good luck to Hannah, but I think she keeps the feud with Sandy alive because she still wants the attention for whatever her endeavors are - she doesn't really want a private life
