Broadway's' "Funny Girl" to Lea Michele: "GO TO HELL!!!"
Good news: Beanie Feldstein will be starring in a Broadway revival of Funny Girl in 2022!
The musical is about the life of Broadway star Fanny Brice, her unlikely rise to fame, and her relationship with husband Nicky Arnstein. The show originally opened in 1964 and starred none other than Barbra Streisand.
Beanie called the casting a "lifelong dream come true," especially as she had a Funny Girl–themed party when she was 3 years old. Plus, Beanie has been singing in musicals since the age of 5 — and originally aimed to have her career on Broadway instead of in movies.
However, another name started trending on Twitter when the news hit...Lea Michele.
Why? Well, for one, Funny Girl was pretty integral to Lea's character on Glee — she sings "Don't Rain on my Parade" in Season 1 Sectionals and her character later stars in the Broadway revival.
However, the connection isn't just fictional! A potential Lea Michele–led Funny Girl revival was swirling around for a few years, and Lea herself said in 2017, "I did a concert in Central Park...I did like nine Funny Girl songs and turned to Ryan [Murphy] and I was like, OK, I'm ready to do it. It's a lot of work and it would be an honor to do it. But if I'm going to go back [to Broadway] that's what I'd really like to do."
Because petty Broadway Twitter is a glorious place, the memes just kept coming:
Lea herself didn't comment on the news, but seems to be generally chillin' by the beach.
Congrats again, Beanie!

I'm kind of shocked they went with.... this.
Lea Michele would have been much more flattering (physically) to Barbra Streisand, than this person.

There have been fat people in show business for years: Jackie Gleason, Tessie O'Shea, William Frawley, Totie Fields, Carroll O'Connor, Fred "Rerun" Berry, Nell Carter, John Candy, Oprah Winfrey, Larry Mondello from [italic]Leave it to Beaver[/italic], and now Chrissy Metz who outweighs her by at least a metric ton. Even Walt Disney packed on the pounds in his later years when he was doing his Sunday night TV show.

I don't care that Beanie Feldstein is a tub so much as I care that there's nothing New York or Jewish about her, a major part of the character. And she sings pretty well, nothing special. There must be something we don't know about that made them hire her. This is a big production that'll cost $$$.

Beanie Feldmanstein is fine for act I, but not for act II. We are supposed to believe that Nicky married Fanny because he loves her *and* she has money. With Beanie, it will be, "He married the fat girl for her money. There was never any love there."
Michael Mayer was doing woke before there was woke. I suspect this will be as successful as his disastrous On a Clear Day...

Maybe Beanie's casting is a production strategy to drum up underground support for Leah Michelle, who they've secretly wanted as their "Funny Girl" all along. As the videos above have shown, Leah's interpersonal relations have nearly undone her. Casting her in a revival to start off with comes off as rewarding bad behavior and bestowing entitlements that have already antagonized her fan and non-fan base.
Casting a mediocre, milquetoast fatty creates a different kind of dissension, as the role of Fanny Brice is all but sacred ground and an unbeatable standard set by Streisand. What if the plan is for Feldstein to screw up in previews, repel audiences, and leave producers with a recast option as the last attempt to salvage the dog? That's where Leah Michelle comes in. In perfect Eve Harrington fashion, she slips into the part, saves the day, gets the haters back on her side, and romps home with great reviews, accolades, and a critical and financial hit!
And P.S. Could Miss Barbra have a covert stake or at least an approval as to the casting of her iconic role? And will the opening coincide with her 80th birthday and the release of her much-anticipated autobiography. "My Search for Beauty?" We shall see....

R84 Your latter statement I get. Your former statement qualifies you as either under 12, on the spectrum, or plain dumb as rocks. Streisand is a once in a lifetime talent, unequaled, unrivaled. It's only taken 58 years to mount a revival of "Funny Girl." There's a reason, jackass.

[quote]so really is there anyone out there you queens would like to see as Fanny?
NO. FUNNY GIRL is a terrible Broadway musical that was made into a hit by the star power of its leading lady. Not because of the writing. So, unless you can sign a 24 year old Barbra Streisand to revive, or her equivalent (someone we have not found in the intervening 57 years,) then there is no need to revive this crappy show.
By the time it was filmed, Streisand's star was burning brightly and they recrafted the piece into a star vehicle for his famous and famously talented leading lady. But the Broadway show is very different. And pointless.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | August 22, 2021 1:08 PM

R96, I disagree. The Broadway show is definitely B level musical comedy, but it isn't as bad as some like to say. I have seen it several times in Europe. The problem is that in the USA, the show has the Streisand/Brice baggage. In Europe, Fanny, is just a stage character, like Julie Jordan, or Ado Annie. Without that baggage it works much better. Still not perfect, but better.
Uncharacteristically for me, this is one show that I think would be improved with nontraditional casting. If Fanny was a Black actress trying to make it in a largely white world, it would have a bit more weight. Also, the second act would work better with a Black Fanny and White Nick.
Yes, it is going to have plenty of weight with Beanie Feldstein, (yuk, yuk). And yes, I wrote "black fanny". Grow up.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | August 22, 2021 1:21 PM

Whatever, R97.
"... definitely B level musical comedy...." You stated it yourself.
I would suggest that it means something that with that terrific overture and songs like "People" and "Don't Rain on My Parade," it still can't get past "definitely B level musical comedy" because of that shitty book built on a bad idea.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | August 22, 2021 1:25 PM

R98, yes "B Level", not C level or bottom of the barrel. "B" means good, not great. Were you one of those kids who thought if you got a "B", you failed?
There are plenty of B level musicals that are worthy of production. The book isn't "shitty". Act I is pretty good. It is Act II where it falls apart.

Sorry, but that's a good example of a shitty book. A long day's musical journey into a not very compelling night.
No. We have two great recordings of the score. The OBC and the film soundtrack. On those recordings you'll find the very best FUNNY GIRL has to offer. There is no reason to invest millions of dollars into a stage production of FUNNY GIRL. Girl meets boy. Girl sings "Don't rain on my parade." Boy does so. Girl whines about it then shrugs it off. "That's life in the the-ay-ter." Curtain.
No. It starts with a bad idea which has no where to go. And does so.
