Joan started with the plastic surgery because she realized how much Melissa resembled her and she wasn't having any of that.

She was prettier in 2000. She was really a trailblazer in admitting and being proud of plastic surgery.

I think it was the subsequent procedures after 2001 that REALLY made her look like an alien. But how many damned rhinoplasties can one person have? Even more severe examples of that are LaToya & Michael Jackson.

But that particular overall look that was popular starting sometime in the 1990s, was always horrifying to me because it ALWAYS included a somewhat severe rhinoplasty, and I just can't imagine carving my nose down like that (I happen to think my nose is perfect, anyway).

I hate her bullying personality, but I thought her original face was pretty. Her face was longer and more narrow than most. (Today, people use the insult "horseface" to make fun of this type of face.). But she had nice features. The 80s' big puffy hairstyles looked ridiculous on her tiny head. She looked great with the more natural hair styles of the late 90s.

They cheek implants did improve Joan's looks because she had an extremely narrow face.

I'm with r9. I was a faithful viewer of her E! Red Carpet coverage and the Fashion Police Specials that usually appeared a few days later. 2001's work was alarming but minor when compared to the Mickey Rourke/The Wrestler makeover that she gave herself sometime within the next 5 years.

And I continue to be SHOCKED that those Fashion Police Specials from the 90s & early 00s (that predated the weekly show) are never discussed here are anywhere else. They we're HILARIOUS! Comedy Gold!

The specials consisted of Joan, Melissa, a fussy Eldergay who's name escapes me (ironically playing "Straight Man") and a rotating 4th guest (usually a designer, stylist or starlet). Joan ALWAYS delivered and kept me in stitches. That weekly Fashion Police Show (that I didn't watch much of) was weak compared to those specials!

R16, I remember those specials, and Joan's oft-repeated question, "What are you famous for?"

I think she had a stroke, also. Her right eye has that look to it.

I don't get the combo of extreme rhinoplasty (especially the ones creating an exaggerated retrousse) and cheek implants. Imo that is what makes the chipmunk look.

Which is adorable on chipmunks, but not so much on humans.

This was Joan in 1965. I'm not sure if she had had plastic surgery by then, but she looked completely fine here. A parent or a sibling must have rteally mussed with her head in childhood for her to go so berserk with the surgeries over the years..

Don't forget the goretex lips as hers had thinned out by 2000. She had the works. Many injectibles and freshenings forllowed.l

I think she just put on weight. The surgery was done when she had a thinner face and it looked mostly fine, but senior weight gain distorted her features. I've noticed that Janet Jackson now has the same problem. Her nose was designed for the slim, young Janet and looks odd on the round pie face she has now.

R21, actually that photo was taken using "broad" studio photo lighting technique. The photographer uses that camera/face angle and lighting style to make a narrow face look broader. The photographer realized she had a narrow face and was using broad lighting to make the narrowness less noticeable.

I remember Rosie O’Donnell taking notice and calling her an “alien” in a stand up routine. The media acted shocked.

R29, well to be fair, Joan was pretty nasty to Rosie. She used to do an impression of Rosie coming out. It wasn't flattering.
