Very sad.
Grammy-winning folk singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith is DEAD TO ME!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 17, 2021 9:00 AM |
That is sad. I always saw her name but have never heard any of her music. 68 is too young.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 13, 2021 9:02 PM |
Wow - I loved her!!! Until I met my evil husband who complained every time I listened to Country music.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 13, 2021 9:05 PM |
Oh, no! And so soon after her cancer diagnosis.
Well, she was quite a funny gal.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 13, 2021 9:06 PM |
Very sad, I loved her songwriting and quirky voice.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 13, 2021 9:07 PM |
Aww, big Nanci. She was huge.

I cry every time I listen to her duet with John Stewart, "Sweet Dreams Will Come."
I feel like a fire
In the morning when the fire is out
I am walking on the wire
And the wire's what the whole thing is about
The pretender is thinning
Surrender is winning
And yet, it's beginning
To feel like those sweet dreams will come

I first heard of Nanci in 1987 with the heartbreaking "Once In A Very Blue Moon."
Oh, 'cause you act like
It never even hurt you at all
And I'm the only one
Gettin' up from a fall
Tell me you don't feel it
Oh can't you recall
Just once in a very blue moon
Just once in a very blue moon
Just once in a very blue moon
And I feel one comin' on soon

Such a talented singer-songwriter. I’m sad to hear this news.
My fave Nanci Griffith song is - I Don’t Wanna Talk About Love
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 13, 2021 9:23 PM |
"“It was Nanci’s wish that no further formal statement or press release happen for a week following her passing,” Gold Mountain Entertainment said in a statement."
That's strange

R11 she didn’t want another death debacle like Tanya Roberts death announcement from earlier in 2021.
I ❤️ her version of If These Walls Could Speak. The lyrics/music are so reflective and pensive. This song causes me to weep every time I listen to it.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 13, 2021 9:33 PM |
Another Nanci Griffith fave.. This song and video was my first exposure to her music in 1988. I was an instant 16 yr old fan.
I Knew Love

Nanci's lyrics were powerful and insightful - she didn't shy away from the painful truths
Case in point, "Drive-in Movies and Dashboard Lights"
Sister had a crystal voice She played a Silverstone from Montgomery Ward Baez songs and Monroe hair She sure could turn the boys heads to stare Swimwear saunter, tan and haunt them Was all she learned in school Books were for the other girls And the other girls were fools Texas back in '69 was drive in movies and dashboard lights Father waltzed her down the aisle Cause college didn't suit her style The sad truth was she could barely read But if you told dear father, well he wouldn't believe you The telephone rang and drove mother insane From all the hearts left on the shelf Sisters gone and she won't be home Cause she didn't take care of herself Texas back in '69 was drive in movies and dashboard lights Where is she now The backseat queen of fraternity Where is she now She's heavy on thigh And light on integrity Someone should have told her When beauty's all you offer How soon the world discovers That your beauty's gone Its gone

I’ve been listening to Nanci a lot lately. YouTube really put her in my algorithm and I took off with it. ‘Love at the five and dime’ is one of my favorite songs.
She was an exemplary songwriter. Rest In Peace.

Oh no. My dad used to play her album "Little Love Affairs" a lot (which included several of the songs posted here). I forgot how much I liked it.

Back in 1989-1991, I would play this video to turn my friends into Nanci Griffith fans.
It didn't matter if they were Madonna queens or Erasure queens, it always worked with this performance.

I didn’t follow her and I’m surprised by that Outbound Plane video. I didn’t know she was pretty once. She did a great cover of Viva Las Vegas on a Doc Pomus tribute album.

A favorite of mine, "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness."
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 13, 2021 11:13 PM |
I'm really sad. What a beautiful talent and truly unique voice. That performance is such a charmer R20.
Letterman showcased her quite often. She was quirky and a bit difficult. So much gravity and sweetness. The real deal. An artist.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 13, 2021 11:23 PM |
Same song as R20. But to me, this performance is even better. It's like being there in the warm night air. My 21 year old nephew fell in love with Nanci Griffith when I shared this with him a year ago. Then he did his homework and deep dive into Nanci Griffith. He probably knows more of her music than I do now. RIP. Something magical.

I was hoping someone would create a thread so that we could pay tribute. Thank you, OP.
Gutted by the news. What a sweet, smart, sassy, and wonderful soul. Rest in peace, Nanci. You will be missed.

She was one of Robert Plant's many loves. They lived together for a long time. She was such a gifted musician.

What's with the Nixon/Agnew and I Like Ike buttons?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 14, 2021 12:38 PM |
With all due respect to Maura O'Connell's version of "Trouble In the Fields"
this is the iconic Nanci at her sassy best singing her own version
P.S. I also was surprised on a trip to visit friends in Scotland in the mid 1990s that they knew and asked me about Nanci Griffith who wasn't a well known artist in the U.S. at the time - she performed extensively in the U.K. and had a big following there
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 14, 2021 7:16 PM |
She was an amazing songwriter and performer. I'm loving all the rememberances and tributes bring posted about her by the many artists she touched and influenced.

[r36] I thought Patti Griffin (not Griffith) was with Robert Plant. (I'm pretty sure.) Here's a link to a Patti Griffin song, "Heavenly Day" to show who she is.

I love, love, love her version of Boots of Spanish Leather. Apparently Dylan did too. He dubbed in the harmonica part after hearing her version.
This is more melodically meditative than one of Nanci's own songs - gorgeous rhythm and bass playing and Griffin's sweetest spot in her voice - it's beautiful.

She also wore LBJ buttons. I seem to recall her also wearing Ann Richards buttons.

R38, you're correct, the one I posted was the first version I heard but it wasn't the right one for this thread.

R1 is the Frauiest Frau that ever cunted her way like a fat ass and plopped into the R1 spot.

R41 I love it.
"Boots!"
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 15, 2021 12:13 AM |
It is beautiful. But how in the fuck did I type Griffin, R45? UGH. I DO know the difference. Boots.
I like Patty Griffin too - but more as a songwriter than a singer or performer.
Nanci Griffith was everything intriguing and lovely as a singer, songwriter, musician and presence. She had an evocative voice but her communication was pure and direct.
A familiar song with a new message. Respectable harmony from Will Lee in Letterman's band.

*THAT* article. She had a problem with Texas. And maybe they had some legitimate beef with her too. Some points were scored, but never settled. But I don't care. I love her voice and her work. RIP Nanci.

How'd she die?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 15, 2021 1:13 PM |
I had no idea that she'd written that letter. Or that there were Nanci haters.
Texas is a shitty place for so many reasons. Even strong women like Molly Ivins can only muddle through the slog for so long.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 15, 2021 2:18 PM |
Such direct and fine singing. Her exceptionally pretty voice flowed with an open throat and deceptively good technique. If EmmyLou Harris had a personality, maybe she would be more criticized too? Probably Griffith did become a bit affected and grandiose? Lots of the folky singers are like that to be honest. (Jane Siberry, Jewel, Fiona, Shawn Colvin, MCC.) It comes from an innately pure heart as it deals with fame and the personal attacks that arrive with acclaim. Nanci was as real as rain and dust. If she was personally a bit fey or tetchy - then she's someone. She loved to sing and she was very much a champion of Americana music. She was a fine musician who had great respect for others. She dealt with multiple bouts and kinds of cancer. She was so very pretty when she started. It seems clear that her face became distorted over time. She was accosted for looking euphoric on her album covers? Texas is one weird place. (Zellweger is another die hard Texas girl done more damage than good by her "roots.") It's the don't let's discuss that out loud state. So be cute about it.

[quote]Nanci Griffith and I stopped by a College Station, Texas, radio station in the fall of 1978 where I snapped this shot of her through the control-room glass. She always encouraged me. My career and life wouldn’t be the same without her. I’m so sorry we lost her. - Lyle Lovett
