Ryan Murphy ignores lesson of own production, “Halston”, and licenses his name to more crap

Including American Crime Story: Studio 54!

My God why doesn’t he just move to Wilton Manors and open a gay gift shop called “Have You Found A Treasure?” already.

by Anonymousreply 121September 5, 2022 11:41 PM

Isn’t he just doing an Aaron Spelling? Churning out shows that people watch. Halston was a haute couture designer. Nothing Ryan Murphy has done is highbrow, it’s for the masses.

by Anonymousreply 1August 13, 2021 3:30 PM

Well done, OP. (The gay gift shop had me LOL.)

This sounds like a desperate cash grab. Does Ryan know/sense his days at NETFLIX are over? There's nary a mention of that deal in the article, which suggests that he's crawling back to FX. I don't think "American Sports Story" is necessarily a terrible idea for a series, but it sounds nothing like him at all.

His ambitions have truly exceeded his talents.

by Anonymousreply 2August 13, 2021 3:31 PM

American Barf Story

by Anonymousreply 3August 13, 2021 3:34 PM

I'd prefer American Crime Story: Car 54.

by Anonymousreply 4August 13, 2021 3:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 5August 13, 2021 3:39 PM

No one cares about Studio 54 anymore, Ryanetta.

by Anonymousreply 6August 13, 2021 3:40 PM

What murder happened at Studio 54? All I know is a woman who died crawling through an air conditioner vent to sneak in.

by Anonymousreply 7August 13, 2021 3:52 PM

This seems excessive.

by Anonymousreply 8August 13, 2021 3:54 PM

The only crime there was the embezzling.

by Anonymousreply 9August 13, 2021 4:04 PM

I actually think this is a more of an indictment of FX than Murphy, whom everyone had pencilled in as an overblown garbage peddler years ago.

Become synonymous with one supplier is a sign of a moribund brand (see CW). Won’t surprise me if Chapek goes Joan Crawford in the Disney portfolio rose garden soon, as it clear he has no problem butting heads with talent.

by Anonymousreply 10August 13, 2021 4:16 PM
Become synonymous with one supplier is a sign of a moribund brand (see CW).

I'd argue that the DC shows are a bit different and they're all generally successful for the network. CW also knows if the shows weren't there they'd be on HBO Max. Plus CW does have other successful shows not affiliated with Greg Berlanti and DC Comics.
Does Ryan know/sense his days at NETFLIX are over?

Shonda Rhimes just had her contract renewed and upped with Netflix. Ryan hasn't so far.

With the FX Boss now kissing his ass and Ryan throwing his latest projects over at FX my guess is that Netflix is done with him and this is them trying to soften the blow.

And he's happy to go back home to FX where they'll continue to put on anything he wants and he has no competition.

Add HALSTON to the dustheap of projects that most people have already forgotten about, like THE PROM and especially, HOLLYWOOD.

by Anonymousreply 13August 13, 2021 6:04 PM

I love Ryan. I watch most of his productions. Currently rewatching Nip/Tuck on hulu. I loved The Normal Heart. Ryan has won six Emmys! What's not to love? Show Ryan your support, gays!
"What murder happened at Studio 54? All I know is a woman who died crawling through an air conditioner vent to sneak in."

There weren't murders at 54, R7. It will mainly concern the financial crimes of founders Steve Rubell, & Ian Schrager.

by Anonymousreply 17August 13, 2021 6:19 PM

In addition to HALSTON, there have been a number of documentaries about Studio 54, Steve Rubell, and that world (and even, I recall, a couple of stage musicals about it). And the infamous 54 movie with Ryan Phillipe and Mike Myers from 20 years ago.

It no longer feels particularly fresh or interesting, IMHO. What's left to say about it?

by Anonymousreply 18August 13, 2021 7:20 PM

R2 Even if his days at Netflix were numbered (something i doubt) he was smart enough to left two hit shows on Fox.

Call him whatever you like but the guy is not dumb

It seems like Murphy’s PR (the one and only Squirrel) is desperate to spin a polite answer into something it’s not.

by Anonymousreply 20August 13, 2021 7:43 PM

Ultimately the problem is that Murphy’s success was the result of a brief period in the television ecosystem when basic cable provided niche products. That world no longer exists. I think the writing is on the wall that he is done at Netflix but I’m curious to see if he will go back to FX which is simply waiting to be extinguished by Disney. It may behoove him to go to an upstart like Paramount Plus.

Murphy creates content Netflix owns forever. That's stuff subscribers can watch whenever they want. It's not about taste (which, obviously, is subjective) it's about Netflix being a content provider for binge-watching when you are stuck at home for whatever reason.

by Anonymousreply 23August 13, 2021 8:15 PM

I'm a sucker for Ryan Murphy shows whether they are on FX or Netflix. He has a good eye for camp drama, hot guys, and iconic female actresses and characters.

R23 television streaming is almost entirely “of the moment.” You have to create something new audiences want to watch or they’re not going to subscribe. No one will remember Murphy’s Netflix turkeys in a few years, so what good is having a library of them?

I’m glad Finn and Evan are going to be on my TV again (especially Evan) but good god, someone just needs to … do something about Ryan Murphy (I’m not suggesting … murder…) so that those boys can do more interesting stuff instead of this schlock.

by Anonymousreply 32August 13, 2021 9:06 PM

American Horror Story has been one of the worst shows on TV since midway through season three. To think that FX is just ordering more more more demonstrates that the LCD always wins in any kind of entertainment (and news) media. Just constant erosion.

by Anonymousreply 33August 13, 2021 9:07 PM

If I had a say at FX or Netflix, I would suggest buying Murphy's concepts, having him and Fuller direct the first season, and then a mandatory handoff to another proven producer with no input from Murphy.

All AHSes, Glee, The Politician, Pose, so many others started off with a lot of promise and campy wit, and then took a total nosedive after season one into an unwatchable mess.

Coven pissed me off because it had such promise as a concept and was written so terribly. I watched parts of the next two seasons and thought they were awful. I turned off the first episode of AHS Hotel during a graphic, bloody rape scene with zero interest in seeing how Lady Gaga was going to be worked in. (The Stevie Nicks cameo in Coven is painful to watch.)

Then I watched Apocalypse and thought "this isn't as bad as I expected." And then in the end, the son of Satan, who had survived the apocalypse and dominated humanity despite a worldwide poison, was vanquished...by being run over by a Jeep.

Give me a fucking break.

Why do people pay this man?

by Anonymousreply 34August 13, 2021 9:14 PM

R30/R31 AHS isn't one of his Netflix projects though, and R29 very specifically said his Netflix projects.

R34 Hell, hand over a few episodes in to the first season, he seems to lose interest very quickly.

by Anonymousreply 35August 13, 2021 10:53 PM

I too was very disappointed in Coven r34. It had loads of potential, but decided to go in too many different directions. Just a mess. Murphy is good at conceiving ideas, but not so good at executing them.

by Anonymousreply 36August 13, 2021 11:00 PM

AHS 1984 was perfect and most of HOTEL too. And sorry I liked BOYS IN THE BAND and the fairy-tale HOLLYWOOD as a wonderful escape from last year. Also RATCHED was a success for Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 37August 13, 2021 11:14 PM
Shonda Rhimes just had her contract renewed and upped with Netflix. Ryan hasn't so far.

That had to sting. She had her contract renewed after her first series for them. Murphy is probably holding out hope that Monster will be a hit.

When I saw the trailer for American Crime Story: Impeachment, it made me think of how Five Days at Memorial was supposed to be the third season of that anthology. Murphy had the rights to the book and had already announced Sarah Paulson was going to play Dr. Anna Pou. But I guess it wasn't a "sexy" enough crime for him. Now, John Ridley is doing it for Apple+ with Vera Farmiga as the lead -- which is all probably for the best.

by Anonymousreply 38August 13, 2021 11:38 PM

No R38 it would have been too expensive for them, they've calculated in pre-production. Apple+ has the money.

by Anonymousreply 39August 13, 2021 11:55 PM

R33, it gets good ratings, why wouldn't they renew it?

by Anonymousreply 40August 13, 2021 11:57 PM
apart from American Horror Stories. So the "no one" is wrong and hyperbole.

American Horror Stories is Hulu, R30 which is ... FX.
reddit begs to differ.

Literally, a subreddit of the American Horror Story Reddit where half the board's teens trash Horror Stories and the other half blindly defends it with quotes such as, "It's not supposed to make sense!"
To think that FX is just ordering more more more demonstrates that the LCD always wins in any kind of entertainment (and news) media. Just constant erosion.

The FX shows he makes are (aside from American Horror Stories) generally good. Give him a true story, tell him to turn it into a series and he'll nail it. Probably because it only involves him putting his touch on it and not actually generating the story. Whether it's OJ, Feud or Versace, he can pull that off. Maybe he has finally realized that's where his future is. He can even attract name actors for just one season.

However, he could have just as easily taken American Love Story and American Sports Story over to Netflix for his "exclusive" deal and called it John and Carolyn and The Aaron Hernandez Story. It speaks volumes he's giving them to FX as technically they are new shows and not tied to what he has already done.
AHS 1984 was perfect and most of HOTEL too. And sorry I liked BOYS IN THE BAND and the fairy-tale HOLLYWOOD as a wonderful escape from last year. Also RATCHED was a success for Netflix.

He produced, "Boys in the Band" but that was not his project. He didn't write it (of course) or direct it. Have gave it over completely to Joe Mantello who directed it on stage and he STILL couldn't crack the Top 10 no matter how much they pushed it.

He focused on the wrong things with Hollywood.

Ratched was his [bold]only[/bold] real hit on Netflix but that's one out of how many shows? If he had of only delivered Ratched and nothing else then I'm sure Netflix would just love him but as it stands, it took that goose a long time and a lot of money to lay one golden egg.

by Anonymousreply 41August 14, 2021 1:26 AM

A lot of the stuff Shonda Rhimes produces turns to shit after awhile like Murphy's shows.

by Anonymousreply 42August 14, 2021 2:14 AM

Question - when you’re a writer and producing television shows, or doing movies, do you know at the time that your work is shit? Do you think to yourself, - it’s just ok, it could definitely be better, but I’m not going to do that, or I don’t have time to make it quality, or it needs to get done and this is the best we can do today, or the network or studio just wants something to put out there and they’re not really looking for perfection anyway. How does crap actually make it onto air or movie screen. Do they know it’s C+ level work and just don’t give a shit?

by Anonymousreply 43August 14, 2021 3:02 AM

R42, Ryan's longest-running show is American Horror Story with 9 seasons on pay for cable, FX. Glee on Fox and Nip/Tuck on FX also ran for 6 seasons. 911 is on Season 4.

Shonda's longest-running show is Grey's Anatomy is on Season 17 with a promised 18th season. On Prime Time Network Television. Airing at 8 PM. Winning its timeslot all 17 years. It's usually in the top 3 dramas on broadcast television and earns ABC a lot of money with commercial revenue. It's nearly always on critics must watch lists. Scandal ran for 7 seasons. How to Get Away With Murder ran for 6. Private Practice ran for 6.

Her shows may not be as great by the end as when they started (few shows are), but no one says that they "completely turn to shit" as consistently as Ryan Murphy fans do about all of his shows. Her shows are still highly rated and well-reviewed and have remained in the top 10 until they're over.

They've both had some absolute stinkers (The Catch/Scream Queens) but being on ABC also means she has a tougher audience than Ryan Murphy did with FX, Hulu or even Fox where the ratings never had to reach and stay at Big 3 levels. Glee's ratings crashed in Season 5. They went from 8.26 million viewers to 4.56 million viewers and finished with 3.14 million viewers. In season 15 of Grey's they were at 6.5 million viewers. Even now they're still the highest rated drama on the network and they're still nowhere near Glee's lowest points.

by Anonymousreply 44August 14, 2021 4:47 AM

Shonda's shows have a broader appeal.

by Anonymousreply 45August 14, 2021 4:56 AM

Ultimately the problem with Ryan Murphy is that staying relevant in show business requires a degree of reinvention and he has not been able to do that. Shonda put all her effort into one show at Netflix and not only was it a gigantic hit but it was a reinvention of her brand. Murphy simply hit the photocopy button of stuff he has done before or that has already been done to death. He could have made any musical he wanted to at Netflix but instead he chose to make a two hour “Glee”. Everything he chooses has the sensibility of a sixty year old white gay man. Aaron Spelling continually reinvented his products through this career to appeal to new audiences, going from Dynasty to 90210 to Charmed over three decades. Murphy simply wants to cater to the demographic of gay men his age. We are in 2021 and he still thinks people give a fuck about JFK Jr or Studio 54. Much like the proprietor of said Wilton Manors gay gift shop, he simply accumulates anachronistic tchotchkes and thinks they’re treasure.

by Anonymousreply 46August 14, 2021 11:07 AM

R46 I don't think Ryan's big problem is staying power in Hollywood. It's that he has all these great, creative ideas for stories but he only has the ability to make half a season worth watching and then it all falls apart. Some people are good at concepts but poor at follow through. He needs to hand off his projects to better show runners and writers once he gets them off the ground.

He also has a problem in my opinion with casting. He casts a lot of great older actresses, but once he hooks one for an interesting role she plays well (Lange in the first season of AHS), he then begins co-creating roles for the sake of them having fun and not for the sake of entertainment that suits his narrative.

The bottom line is that he's too self-indulgent to the detriment of all his projects. Yet people still buzz about them and watch them and so networks keep buying them even though they are all destined to wind up disappointments.

by Anonymousreply 47August 14, 2021 11:17 AM

Looking at his wiki page, are American Love Story and American Sports Story real things?!?!

The Martina/Chrissie rivalry/friendship would make an interesting movie but not a 10 part series.

And Ryan Murphy's A Chorus Line is not something I need to see.

R49 He might have gotten away with it. Murphy has addressed a lot of LGBT issues with what we might call "woke irreverence"; that is, irreverent jokes and situations embedded in Afterschool Special-esque plotlines and lecture-y monologues.

And the title suggests to me that it might lift a lot from Victor/Victoria, which I watched last weekend and still mostly holds up (aside from a comment at the end about being a 'faggot').

by Anonymousreply 50August 14, 2021 11:58 AM

I liked Scream Queens, R44, and I look forward to a belated season 3(and I doubt I'm the only one).

Ratched was pointless, though. Great production design and I love Paulson, but pointless.

And, for all it's potential, Pose turned out to be such an erratic, disappointing mess. It really stands alongside Westworld and Under the Dome as show that suffered a steep and noticeable decline after it's first season.

Murphy also did two other pilots which weren't picked up:

St. Sass. He did this one for The WB after Popular ended. Delta Burke as Edna Garrett (house mother to a bunch of girls at an elite prep school), but the twist was Delta was a New York socialite who was FORCED to do this as community service. Amber Riley, Diane Delano (from Popular) and hot piece of ass Gregory Harrison rounded out the cast.

Open. An HBO drama which was supposed to be an "exploration of sexuality" with Michelle Monaghan, Scott Speedman, Wes Bentley, Anna Torv and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

by Anonymousreply 60August 14, 2021 10:50 PM

If Murphy was reflexive enough he could probably turn “Have You Found a Treasure” into a Needful Things-type horror story set among regretful older gay men in Palm Springs.

However I doubt he has that level of self-awareness to pull that off. Maybe Mike White could do it.

by Anonymousreply 61August 15, 2021 1:09 PM

If Mike White retains his brilliance and doesn't get sucked into a bigfranchise creation deal that kills his quality, then maybe Ryan Murphy will be redeemed in a way. Because, in a way, I can view The White Lotus as influenced by Murphy's tonal aesthetic and eccentric characters, but in a masterful way that goes bounds beyond anything Murphy has proved to be capable of.

One of my writing professors always said there are two kinds of important writer: the innovators and the masters. Ryan Murphy is an innovator who makes bold strokes but doesn't do anything brilliant with them, and Mike White is a master who draws from others' innovations and realizes their potentials fully.

by Anonymousreply 62August 15, 2021 1:22 PM

I'm not buying this theory of Mike White being "influenced" by Ryan Murphy and his aesthetic in any way.

Mike White's TV and film writing credits actually pre-date Ryan Murphy's. The question might be whether White's extensive work influenced Murphy's, not the other way around. The difference is that Mike White hasn't built up some PR/personality cult around himself.

by Anonymousreply 63August 15, 2021 4:34 PM

St. Sass sounds like fun. I wish that one would leak.

Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr. as the middle aged couple

Finn Wittrock and Emma Roberts as the newlyweds

Kathy Bates as the lonely rich lady

Gabourey Sidibe as the trainee who gives birth on her first day, except this time the baby is an evil island deity who possesses busboy Cody Fern

Murphy and White are very different. Murphy seems to love the glitz and spectacle of everything. He's always loading up his shows and movies with wonderful stars, beautiful sets, the best soundtracks, tons of sex, tons of gore, tons of sequins and glitter, etc. but a lot of them feel so empty. He was probably at his best during the first few seasons of Nip/Tuck where this amount of excess actually helped showcase how empty these characters were without all the extra trimmings of life and how the pursuit of perfection was useless. It usually just comes across as tacky and too much.

White is usually very no-frills in terms of style, but he gets down to the core of these characters way better than Murphy ever has. He strikes me as a much deeper human being all around.

by Anonymousreply 70August 15, 2021 9:53 PM

Murphy probably misses is the HBO promotional efforts... THE WHITE LOTUS is mildly entertaining and easy to analyze for those New York media reviewers who probably think it's much more intelligent than Murphy's in-the-face shtick. So it arrived here too... I like THE WHITE LOTUS too but we see how the first season's ending lands for White - and then the second season. So far both seasons of AMERICAN CRIME STORY showed that Murphy's production can be "deep" and "human" too. I think both guys are extremely talented and enrich the world of recognizable unique TV storytelling.

by Anonymousreply 71August 16, 2021 1:46 AM

Murphy excels when he has an ending in sight. With many of his based on a true story shows, there's already a resolution there, so those seem to click better and not go off on as many tangents. He's a bit to ADD in a lot of his other shows. He'll bring in random celebrities for an episode or two just because he can and was getting bored with telling the real story at hand. The Stevie Nicks cameo in AHS was a good example. Why the fuck was she there? Why did the story need to stop for a music video? I love Stevie, but she didn't belong on that show at all.

by Anonymousreply 72August 16, 2021 5:00 PM

Imagine the American Horror Story writers' room...

Ryan Murphy: It's set at an all-girls boarding school...except all the girls are...WITCHES, BITCH! Fabulous witches!!

Writer 1: Fabulous...but it's called horror story, so it needs to be scary and it needs to tell a story, not just be a bunch of prancy fashion sequences and musical numbers for Jessica, right?

Murphy: Of course! Story always comes first! So in this story, all of the witches die off one by one each week as they test out their powers and overtake...The Supreme Witch!!

Writer 2: That's Jessica, yeah?

Murphy: Who else! I have this great line for her. "Knotty pine!"

Writer 1: What?

Murphy: I fuckin hate knotty pine. I'm having my floors replaced.

Writer 3: So all the witches die except one?

Murphy: Yes!

Writer 1: Is that one Jessica or Sarah?

Writer 2: You know it's both.

Murphy: Actually, here's the twist...they all die...but they all stay alive!!!

Writer 1: No, no, that's terrible writing! There's no tension if the dead people don't actually die.

Writer 2: Please don't do this.

Ryan Murphy: No, listen, I am playing the long game here. See, in four years, we will need all the dead witches to be alive because they have to save the world from Satan's son after the apocalypse.

Writer 1: You're kidding.

Ryan Murphy: Not on purpose. I'm just a funny person.

Writer 3: We're doing a season about the end of the world?

Writer 1: Do you really think FX is going to keep paying for this four years from now?

Murphy: What choice do they have? The suspense is killing them. So listen, here's how it goes down. All the witches die this season except they don't die at all, they just get hurt in these really gross, campy killings, but they carry on like nothing happened. People love that. Then, in four years, they come back and see this sassy son of Satan who wears blouses and smoky eye makeup. We have to wait four years though because my friend who will play the son of Satan is 15 right now and I need to wait till he's legal, right? Now, you know the son of Satan is totally invulnerable, right? He can't be harmed. He's immortal, created by a rape in the flames of hell!

Writer 3: So Satan's son wins in the end?

Murphy: No, what is this, a horror show? Of course not. The witches vanquish the son of Satan by going back in time and running him over with a Jeep.

Writer 1: You said he's invurable and immortal.

Murphy: Well yeah, but it's a Jeep.

by Anonymousreply 73August 19, 2021 9:39 AM

I agree with everything you said except the Stevie Nicks cameo. I think her appearance made sense there.

A better example would be Patti LaBelle playing a maid of all things on American Horror Story Freakshow then getting killed off.

As for Stevie, they made it clear from the start that "Misty Day" was a fan of hers and based her entire persona off her. There were always rumors about Stevie Nicks being a witch. So who better to have appear than Stevie Nicks as herself to lend the girls her support. Misty Day got to meet her idol and the show was able to show us a witch that wasn't in the cast since we were told there were other ones but we only really saw the ones on the show. Stevie was one who graduated and went on to other things.

The "music video" was set to the girls preparing to take their exam so rather than the audience getting a montage of this they set it to music with Stevie performing it. One is making flowers grow, one is contacting their dead friend, the other one is making flames appear: all the things they'd do during the test. Finally, the test they were doing was called "The Seven Wonders" and what do ya' know. Stevie performed her song named "Seven Wonders."

Was it necessary? No. But it wasn't like it came out of nowhere. It was obvious he'd planned it from the start and wrote it in enough all season that it made sense. (I also thought it looked beautiful and was a nice way to show the girls together before two of them died -- temporarily until a few seasons later.)

Car 54, Where Are You?

by Anonymousreply 75August 27, 2021 1:00 AM

What more can be said about Studio 54? There have been several documentaries and lots of other media over the years. The entire story is known backwards and forwards, there's nothing else to do with it.

by Anonymousreply 76August 27, 2021 1:01 AM

With the first three seasons, a commonality is that Murphy reintroduces a famous American "crime" from the 1990s that the general audience had a superficial if any understanding of. Beyond what was told to us through media sound bites, it gives us the interior lives of real people that a lot of us weren't aware of at the time and adds a context to the history. I actually think it's a strong recipe, even if people aren't as enthused by the latest season. Part of the appeal is that there are recognisable figures and a story we already feel somehow connected to.

I think with Studio 54, they might be deviating too far from the formula. Or maybe I'm speaking out-of-line here. Was Steve Rubell--who, no doubt, would be one of the main characters--a known personality in the national news? The late 70s/early 80s was a time that mostly predated the media sensationalism that really started to take root in the 1990s. The Simpson chase/trial, the Cunanan manhunt, and the Clinton impeachment trial were all events that the media milked for ratings which had a wide audience. Studio 54 doesn't fit into that mould, does it?

It seems like a more appropriate storyline would be Patty Hearst (if we're going to go that far back in time) or the Iran-Contra Affair, which, despite being in the 1980s, seems to really fit into the formula, no? People here have suggested the Menendez brothers. I'm not sure if there is really more to the story there that needs to be told and could fit a miniseries format. Woody Allen vs. Mia Farrow would be interesting, especially if they were critical of the entire picture. Michael Jackson would be another.

What say you?

I think the next season should be Iran-Contra, Allen vs. Farrow, or Michael Jackson.

by Anonymousreply 77September 9, 2021 11:07 AM
Woody Allen vs. Mia Farrow would be interesting

The threads on here would be a mess.

by Anonymousreply 78September 9, 2021 2:15 PM

Yes, the Woody Allen/Mia Farrow saga gets a lot of play here. It's odd to me, since I don't know why gay men would be so invested in it.

by Anonymousreply 79September 9, 2021 3:54 PM

Well, it's Hollywood, for one. A scandal for another. It's an unresolved "mystery" as well, which is further fueled by being pre-internet. Allen is a director who has made revered films which are canon (Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters), and Farrow is part of some of them, which were made when they were in their prime. Just because it's not a gay scandal doesn't mean it's not going to attract interest from gay men.

The matter of Angelina/Pitt still gets a lot of play here, along with Meghan Markle. But, I suppose that's because of "fraus." Yet, personally, I don't know hot to tell the fraus apart from the gay men, because most everyone here is "Anonymous."

by Anonymousreply 80September 9, 2021 4:58 PM

Actually r80 I just realized that given the ages of so many DLers, they are of Woody and Mia's era and can remember when they were both big stars. That must be a reason.

by Anonymousreply 81September 9, 2021 6:28 PM

I think most TV viewers under 35-40 genuinely don't care about Woody Allen and/or Mia, regardless of what they make of the allegations of sexual abuse.

I'm a bit older and grew up loving ANNIE HALL, HANNAH & HER SISTERS, and some others, but I don't assume that millennials did the same. It's not their sense of humor or worldview at all. These two people have limited interest for them: we may as well be talking about Fatty Arbuckle or Lana Turner and her daughter--their films are about as alien to millennials and youngers as Allen's are.

by Anonymousreply 82September 9, 2021 7:04 PM

Not just Millennials, but a lot of Gen Xers too.

by Anonymousreply 83September 9, 2021 7:07 PM

I think Michael Jackson would be the best subject for American Crime Story. They could focus on the 1993 accusations and then jump forward to the 2006 trial. Jackson's estate would sue the fuck out of everyone involved but it would be worth it to the viewers.

by Anonymousreply 84September 9, 2021 7:17 PM

Studio 54 is like WW II. The story can be told over and over again from different perspectives. I'll watch the shit out of this.

by Anonymousreply 85September 9, 2021 7:28 PM

R84 who would play MJ?

by Anonymousreply 86September 10, 2021 12:54 PM

You know very well Ryan Murphy would cast Sarah Paulson R86.

by Anonymousreply 87September 10, 2021 1:00 PM

R87 that is a terrifying visual.

by Anonymousreply 88September 10, 2021 1:16 PM

That kid from Nip Tuck who actually looked like MJ!

by Anonymousreply 89September 10, 2021 5:44 PM

JonBennet should be the new American Crime Story plot

by Anonymousreply 90September 10, 2021 5:52 PM

What next for this crapfest? Benghazi? Her emails?

by Anonymousreply 91September 10, 2021 5:59 PM

I'm so sick of her.

by Anonymousreply 92September 10, 2021 6:04 PM
JonBennet should be the new American Crime Story plot

A drag queen would have to play Patsy

by Anonymousreply 93September 10, 2021 6:16 PM

I think it would be better if MJ was filmed from behind or always out of focus. That would really up the creepiness factor. Maybe we would see him clearly in the finale. He could smirk and wink at the camera for the final shot.

by Anonymousreply 94September 10, 2021 6:25 PM

He may as well shake up his anthology formula and just plainly give shows to his favorites.

The Sarah Paulson Show can feature her fretting and screaming and triumphing as a different character every week.

The Jessica Lange show can feature the old lady speaking stream-of-consciousness nonsense words in all kinds of made up angry drawls for a half hour every week, plus an uncomfortable song and dance number every third episode.

Finn Wittrock can be dressed up like a different Ken Doll every week and show his full range from demented glee to tortured while flexing and stripping.

Why even bother with scripts?

by Anonymousreply 95September 11, 2021 10:28 AM
JonBennet should be the new American Crime Story plot

That's a good suggestion. I'm sure Ryan Murphy would cast Sarah as Patsy. Victor Garber can play John.

by Anonymousreply 96September 11, 2021 10:36 AM

And Jessica Lange as JonBenet. It couldn't be worse than her Lucille LeSueur impersonation.

by Anonymousreply 97September 11, 2021 10:38 AM

R89 lol yes! Did he ever work with Ryan after Nip/Tuck?

by Anonymousreply 98September 11, 2021 11:31 AM

Did anyone work with Ryan after Nip/Tuck?

by Anonymousreply 99September 11, 2021 11:35 AM

Sarah Paulson had an episode of Nip/Tuck. Does that count? Strange how all those actors fell off the face of the earth after the show ended.

by Anonymousreply 100September 11, 2021 11:47 AM

I think the last big thing Julian did was those Fantastic 4 movies as Dr Doom. And Dylan is on the new Superman show as Lois Lane's dad.

by Anonymousreply 101September 11, 2021 11:59 AM

Jesus, comic books and Ryan Murphy schlock really are all the movies and TV ever made today, aren't they?

by Anonymousreply 102September 11, 2021 12:02 PM

It seems the entire cast of Nip/Tuck were a little peeved at Murphy once he left to do Glee and the show took a huge nosedive. They all deserved Emmys for keeping a straight face during some of those insane storylines in the last few seasons. Besides Paulson and Lily Rabe who were guest stars on the show, he hasn't worked with any of them again as far as I can remember.

by Anonymousreply 103September 11, 2021 4:58 PM

When will the ratings for the premiere episode of ACS: Impeachment be released? I remember Paulson in her Linda Tripp fat suit getting a lot buzz, so I thought there would be a lot of chatter about the premiere on the Internet. But I haven't seen much at all, good or bad.

by Anonymousreply 104September 12, 2021 5:25 PM

r104, The Wrap reported there are just under one million viewers.

by Anonymousreply 105September 17, 2021 2:02 AM

That's pretty bad. Like, one of Andy Cohen's less popular reality shows bad.

by Anonymousreply 106September 17, 2021 3:04 AM
Besides Paulson and Lily Rabe who were guest stars on the show, he hasn't worked with any of them again as far as I can remember.

Jessalyn Gilsig and Dot Marie Jones were in Glee.

Maybe a few other episode guest stars but none of the core cast.

by Anonymousreply 107September 17, 2021 3:26 AM

Greatsh! Who'sh playing me?

by Anonymousreply 108September 17, 2021 11:02 AM

I recall Dylan Walsh was vocal and told a lot of people that he would never work with Murphy again.

by Anonymousreply 109September 17, 2021 1:53 PM

R109 good for him.

by Anonymousreply 110September 17, 2021 2:46 PM

Ryan Murphy needs to shoot some kinky gay porn on the side and get it out of his system.

by Anonymousreply 111September 17, 2021 2:57 PM

R111 I think AHS is as close as you'll get.

Can you imagine being hired as a writer on "American Love Story: JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette" and having to actually deliver a script? It seems like it would be an insanely difficult assignment. At any rate, I'm excited to see how they can stretch out an entire series of 8 to 10 episodes on this dull couple.

Honestly, Murphy should have optioned Spy Magazine's deep dive into JFK Jr's flop political magazine George. At least that would have been entertaining.

American Sisters; Jackie and Lee would have been better and had more content to play with. Susan Lucci as old Lee. Jackie would be hard to cast.

I know a DLer wrote this comment on Deadline

Shay De Shade on September 10, 2021 11:03 am

His initial promise has collapsed into complete hackery.

Mr. Murphy must be applauded for turning celebrity worship and limp pastiche into a career. Just not one many of us wish to see.

Get those dollars while you can, toots. If you keep oversaturating the market, it will just accelerate the dimming of your star.

by Anonymousreply 115September 17, 2021 3:42 PM

R115 are we sure it wasn't Greg Berlanti?

by Anonymousreply 116September 17, 2021 3:57 PM

Murphy seems like a bit of an elitist.

by Anonymousreply 117September 17, 2021 4:32 PM
Honestly, Murphy should have optioned Spy Magazine's deep dive into JFK Jr's flop political magazine George. At least that would have been entertaining.

That would have been interesting premise for a show and Cobie Smulders could have played Ann Coulter again.

by Anonymousreply 118September 18, 2021 4:23 AM
What murder happened at Studio 54? All I know is a woman who died crawling through an air conditioner vent to sneak in.

They made it a woman (played by Bette Midler's abrasive daughter) in HALSTON, but in real life it was a man who died.

by Anonymousreply 119September 18, 2021 4:26 AM

I'm so over Ryan Murphy.

by Anonymousreply 120September 18, 2021 2:23 PM

I watched a documentary about Studio 54 last night that focused, in the second half, on the fraud aspect, but like, is this really an interesting crime story to watch? Or does Murphy just want to do a show where he has an actual historical excuse to show copious amounts of drugs and sex?

Unless there was more criminal activity that this documentary didn't discuss?

One of the biggest crimes in my opinion was their association with that fucking cunt, Roy Cohn.
