Galaxy Phones
Anyone have a Galaxy phone? Which model? How is it?
I've had an iPhone for a while. I'm getting sick of it. Samsung showed some new folding phones yesterday, but I'm not sure I'm into those yet. The proportions just seem to off to me (too tall vs. wide).

The hole for the camera is invisible, except when using chat or another program that uses the camera.

Love Samsung Galaxy phones. I've used several over the years. I'm using S21 now and the camera is far superior to iPhone. Overall very happy

I have had galaxy since the first note. Have an s21 Ultra now. Best andrioid phones you can get. Camera is amazing. 100x zoom I can creep from across the street.

The new folding one looks pretty good. Mrwhostheboss says it's the best phone ever. Huh. I can't get over the width when it's folded, though.

I have one ordered. Trading in my One Note 10 +. This new phone is amazing. Why people buy Apple shit is beyond me.

R7, what did you order? The Z Fold3? I might get the S21 Note Ultra and wait on the next Fold (or the one after that).

I'm thinking of getting the Z Flip 3 -- You can get it with a $400 credit and a $150 Samsung Store credit if you are on or switch to Google Fi.

I wanted to get a S21 Note Ultra in silver with 512 GB, but it seems it's not available anywhere. I might end up getting the Z Fold 3.

I had a Galaxy Note 2 a long time ago ... since then I've had only Google devices: Nexus 5, Nexus 6P, Pixel, Pixel 3 XL. But I'm getting fed up with them. I really like the "pure Android"/no bloatware features, but I've had all kinds of weird issues that Google seems unwilling to address. So I may go back to Samsung. However, I've read that sometimes Samsung devices on Google Fi can't get visual voicemail.

I have a Note 9, which is my 3rd Samsung Galaxy. I prefer the Android operating system, and the phone takes great photos. Like r16 said, I can't do visual voicemails, but I do zoom calls with anyone I want to face time.

I became a fan of Samsung when I had one of their sturdy flip phones forever. Later, when I started using Smartphones, I chose Samsung Galaxy because Verizon was giving a way free virtual reality headsets with it. When I had to get another phone, I chose Galaxy again because I was used to the brand. I haven't owned an iPhone yet, and I don't see anything it offers me beyond what I get with Galaxy.

Do any of the newer phones have external memory port? I have a 256GB microSD inserted in S9+. Other than improved camera, I can't justify upgrading to newer model. So will wait until there's a drastic drop off in performance/responsiveness.

Also, Galaxy phones still have headphone jacks. Apple eliminated theirs long ago.

I have a Galaxy X8. Have loved all my Samsung phones. Cameras are the best. I never get strange texts from China like my Apple friends do. I believe there are more privacy settings. Samsung last forever and don't automatically become obsolete. And of course, you're not preyed on by the Apple universe. But some things you should know. . . no comparable SIRI on Samsung. They have voice command but it was so lame I never use it. (Maybe it's been updated?) It's hard to access some Apple stuff (I have a Mac book) like iCloud or my Apple email. Some Apple apps have Android versions but some do not. And sometimes there are glitches in my texts to my friends' iPhones. Some texts never get there and sometimes they arrive late. Even my phone calls to iPhones sometimes have issues which may or may not be due to the fact they're Apple. For these reasons, my next phone may be an iPhone. Or it may not.

R27, no one's expressed any pride. Why should anyone express pride over a choice of phone? I have an iPhone and I'm switching: a phone doesn't relate in any way to my identity. That would be pathetic.

I have a low to mid range Galaxy A31, best phone I've ever had. No complaints after almost two year's service, wont be upgrading any time soon unless I break it
R12 it has a headphone jack, many of the Galaxy phones do, it was a hard requirement for me as I play sound quite often through gear that long predates Bluetooth
And R24 it has an external memory slot for a micro SD card, also a requirement as I have a lot of music on mine, I have a 512 Gb card in mine plus 128 Gb of internal storage as well
It also has two SIM card slots so I can use it on an overseas one if I travel if I want to

I got Note 20 Ultra (think it's the last Note Samsung's going to make). It still had a SD card slot for expandable memory. The new Samsung phones (S21) no longer have a SD card slot.

r12, many phones now don't have headphone jacks. You can just buy a pair of any bluetooth headphones. They work with any phone.

I'm like r15. I had a Galaxy forever and then switched to a Pixl. It's a lot cheaper but honestly the Galaxy was a better phone. It had no issues, ever. The Pixl has had network issues with enterprise wifi. The QR reader didn't work at first, and it was an acknowledged problem with the Pixl 5 for which Google had no solution. Something else happened when I first got it (I can't remember what it was) and I had to send it in for service after just one week. The Galaxy is worth the extra money. It never, ever broke. I'm not a technology idiot so the problems I've had with the Pixl aren't just me.
r39 is right. I have a cheapo pair of bluetooth headphones I got from Amazon. I haven't lost them yet but if I do I won't care.

I actually came to Galaxy when iPhone got rid of the headphone jack. And then Galaxy get rid of theirs, too. I have fully adjusted to Bluetooth. The phone does come with headphones that plug into the micro USB port.
The one thing I really loved when I came to Galaxy was the curved screen, but I'm kind of hating it now. It makes getting a good screen protector really difficult.
I can't imagine going back to iPhone at this point. Android is too versatile, incompatible with other things.

I was tempted to get the Zfold3 but honestly, I have the S21 Ultra and it is a better phone, better camera, more ram, same processor, better screen. It would cost me 300 dollars to get the zfold 3 after trade-in, when they are only offering 700 for my trade-in I could sell it outright today for 950 on swappa. No thanks.

I have a S10+ and love it. Will trade up to the S21+ soon. I have an iPhone 11 for work. By comparison, it’s slow, heavy, and I’m not sure why you have to press so hard to swipe apps up or closed. The absence of a home button on the iPhone would make me never get one.

I think the cheaper the phone the better as long as it has the basics of any smartphone. They're all pretty good now, even the cheaper Chinese phones.
Cheaper, disposable, rapid changes because one is more likely to lose them, than say a laptop. Breakage, coffee spills.
The days of a prestige iPhone are over.

r53 - it depends on how you deal with a larger phorn. The s21 Ultra is a better phone but much bigger over the flip. (when not folded).

R52 ..... or you are often playing sound back through pre- Bluetooth gear. Good luck trying to play music from you iPhone on a 60's-70's era stereo. Or a lot of older PA gear
Or you work or pass through environments with a lot of RFI (radio frequency interference) which can cause Bluettoth do drop out / lose connection
There are a lot of use cases where a corded connection is preferable, not just headphones

I switched to Android for a while -- first with a Galaxy S10+, and then with a Pixel 4XL -- and now I'm back to iPhone.
The S10+ was a decent phone, hardware-wise, although the in-screen fingerprint reader was practically useless. However, I find Samsung's implementation of Android (One UI) to be unappealing in design, and Samsung insists on loading the phone with their own apps that are inferior to Google's "stock" apps, such as the phone app, messages app and digital assistant. (Attention Samsung: Stop trying to make "Bixby" happen.) Plus, you'll have to wait months after a new Android release to get the update on your phone, because Samsung takes that long to graft their stupid One UI onto the Android software.
After using the S10+, I realized that what I really wanted was a "pure" Android phone and switched to the Pixel 4XL. I loved it. The Google assistant is way smarter than Siri and the camera and computational photography features on the Pixel are really stellar. (That said, Apple has since closed the gap on the computational photography front.) The biggest pitfall of the 4XL was the battery. It was undersized for the phone and battery life was pretty pathetic.
I've since switched back to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is a great phone even if it is a bit...boring. Apple has added some new features to iOS to make the interface more dynamic (such as home screen widgets, although they still aren't interactive) but overall it is the same old, same old. And Siri is still kind of a joke. That said, the display, battery life, reliability and processing speed are fantastic. I only wish that Apple would give users more power to customize the software and not keep all users boxed into the same experience.

R25 the headphone jack and the old charging port is partly why I’m still clinging to my trusty battered second-hand 2015 iphone SE. That, and the heavier sturdier smaller design.
And, as R26 points out, accessing or porting stuff over from iCloud is a fucking headache. I have thousands of photos and hundreds of Notes that I need to keep, and to which I want easy access—is there even a way to transfer all that across to an Android? If not, then this regard I do feel slightly held hostage by Apple.
Other than that, iPhone remain glitchy and basic and energy-deficient as ever. I only use their tech because I’m broke and Apple fans I know donate me their old devices very cheap when they get one of their constant upgrades. So yeah, Samsung are majorly tempting me over. If I could move all my data over easily, I’d get the Galaxy Z Flip now.

R24 the S21+ has expandable storage. I was going to return the S21 bc of the charging port being the only port, but a 10.00 converter makes it work with any headphones. Also I got Verizon to comp a pair of wireless Beats (not using bluetooth earbuds, too close to the amygdala for me and my vertigo) bc they had no promotions when I upgraded but I'm not making the mistake of using my last to act as a down-payment on this. I'd rather have a solid back up device.
I'm a little disappointed that the edge is gone, on older models it was more pronounced so it was more immersive when streaming anything. But the call quality is great, as is the camera so I prefer Samsung at this point.
I used to LOVE LG, their G2 or G3 had a really strong infrared blaster so it could act as a remote to any TV, cable box (never tried it out on a roku) but I did manage to get 500 for it when it was over 6 yrs old bc that paid for the Galaxy S6+, so that worked well.
This trend of engineering out more functionality for a set of traffic light-like cameras is not a trajectory I'm loving.

R66 Smart switch is one of the best features in Samsung, no matter how incompetent the tech support and back up, transferring all desired content is fantastic.
R64 there's also Android File Transfer for moving content from a Mac laptop, tablet, etc. to the Samsung phone
I've also always been an apple user when it comes to computers and tablets but I loathe the iPhone like Madonna and hydrangea.

You couldn't pay me to go back to iPhone (and you REALLY couldn't pay me to use that mac trash). Apple is evil. Proprietary lock-in cult-like smug bullshit.
I have an LG V30 that I love, but it's pretty old now, and LG got out of the phone business, so my next phone is very likely to be a Samsung. Regardless, it'll definitely be Android, and Androids work with and integrate with Windows PCs really well (iPhones don't).
