Is the sea calm enough and warm enough in August to swim off any of the Malibu beaches? Is seaweed still an issue?
Thanks if you can help.

Yes, there is a public beach with parking lot, Zuma. LA beaches have waves, so yes you can swim but you will be diving through waves as well.
You used to be able to access Broad Beach, but I think that beach completely eroded.

Thanks, R1. What about the sea temp and seaweed?

I grew up in LA swimming in the ocean in summer so I think the temp is fine. It is colder than Florida waters and much colder than Mexico/Caribbean.

Malibu for a holiday? There's 2 hotels there and they both suck. There's nothing to do there but go to Mr. Chow's or go to LA an hour away. There is one point of cultural interest there and that is the Getty Villa in the Palisades, which can be seen in two hours.
Also, California is largely in de facto lockdown, OP. Not officially, but loads of places are closed.
You'd be better off going to Hawaii, which is where all the rich Californians have been since the beginning of the pandemic.

R6, the sewage spill was at Dockweiler Beach, which is just 4 to 5 miles north of Manhattan and Hermosa Beach. The California Current pushes all the shit downwind, so it's just as bad to head out there for a swim.

The average ocean temp in LA in August is 68 degrees; for comparison, the ocean temp in August in Cocoa Beach is 82 degrees.

Can you swim there? Not if you're Sterling Hayden!

It's the pacific ocean. It will never be warm
If you are hoping it's going to be like the Gulf of Mexico, it won't

I wouldn’t if I were you. A big fat shark might eat you and you’d be seriously dead.

Barbra's mall has a wave pool.

The California Current in the summer months blows all that cold water from Alaska and Canada down to Baja California, so surface temps are usually in the 50°F to 65°F range. In the winter months, the Davidson current surfaces, moving warm waters from the south, up along the coast to the Pacific Northwest.

When I was in grad school at UCLA, another grad student got killed by a great white while kayaking off Malibu.

Yes. Great whites.
Plus, you have to deal with all the radioactivity from Fukushima.
Not worth it OP.

I was looking at next August, 2022. I might go to Greece instead, maybe Kefalonia. The sea is turquoise and transparent with no seaweed problem and in August the sea temp there is 28c.

28c is 82f. Nice and toasty. One little resort has about twenty restaurants.

Santa Barbara is a far better option. Tons to do, great restaurants and places to stay and nice beaches.
Malibu is boring. Never understood the draw.

Yeah, I was going to say go up to Carpinteria/Santa Barbara instead. Carpinteria always says it has the "safest beaches in California".
