Gay man and parents beaten in DC

Police in Washington, D.C. have arrested a suspect in connection with the brutal beating of a Chinese-American, gay man and his parents in a frightening hate crime near the National Cathedral.

Patrick Joseph Miller Trebat, 38, now faces one count of Felony Assault, two counts of Simple Assault, and one count of Destruction of Property in connection with the attack.

The attack occurred the night of August 7. Dr. Sean Lai, 30, who completed his doctorate in physics at Georgetown University last year, escorted his parents down the street in DC’s Observatory Circle neighborhood around 10:30 pm. Trebat began following the trio before shouting “f*ggots” and “You are not Americans.” He then began beating Lai’s mother, age 51, and the father, age 64; the names of both parents have been withheld due to privacy concerns.

Lai’s mother told police that Trebat struck her husband in the back of the head, knocking him to the ground. Trebat then pushed Lai’s mother to the ground. At that point, Sean Lai tried to intervene, and a struggle ensued between he and Trebat. All three victims suffered serious injuries, and later received treatment at a nearby hospital.

Though investigators have not formally charged Patrick Trebat with a hate crime at the time of this writing, they emphasize that they have not ruled out possible hate crime charges in the future. Court documents also show that Trebat targeted the Lai family based on their race; it remains unclear if the attacker knew Lai was actually gay.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office is continuing to investigate the facts and circumstances of the case and has no further comment at this time,” U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesperson William Miller told the Washington Blade.

The attack on the Lai family comes amid a spike in attacks on Asian Americans in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a rash of hate crimes against gay men worldwide. Earlier this year, an attack on Asian American-run massage parlors in Atlanta claimed the lives of six women. In June, an attacker stabbed a 20-year-old gay man in the back aboard the Staten Island Ferry. That same month, police in Washington DC arrested a man wielding a machete and threatening a group of gay men as they dined outdoors.

by Anonymousreply 3August 11, 2021 7:19 PM

This awful!! Americans are so awful to minorities and try to justify their hatred in any way they can. It's open season on Asian Americans.

by Anonymousreply 4August 11, 2021 7:19 PM

It looks like Trebat moves a lot.

DC is one city that could use a sanatorium. That area is rather affluent, so there's a 100% chance the assailant is crazy times ten. Not a full justification for his behavior, but an example why the tent cities popping up all over the district needed to be razed and all the crazy people rounded up.

Is St ELizabeths the crazy place for DCers?

by Anonymousreply 11August 11, 2021 10:00 PM

This is actually very sad.

by Anonymousreply 12August 12, 2021 12:12 AM

Black suspect?

by Anonymousreply 13August 12, 2021 12:30 AM

No, R13. He is the son, nephew or some other relative of the guy linked at R9.

by Anonymousreply 14August 12, 2021 12:41 AM

R13, the name of the suspect sounds very Irish

by Anonymousreply 15August 12, 2021 3:07 AM

R14, how do they know the economist and the suspect are related?

by Anonymousreply 16August 12, 2021 3:07 AM

This is terrifying

by Anonymousreply 17August 12, 2021 3:16 AM

horrible

by Anonymousreply 18August 12, 2021 3:31 AM

They haven’t said they’re related, R16, googled the assailant’s name and found voter registration info, an obituary and some other things that linked them together. I could be wrong but it’s not a common name so it would be an odd coincidence.

Patrick J Trebat is one of the grandchildren named on this obit

One of the sad facts about the mentally ill homeless is that many of them do come from families with means.

But all the money in the world and all the caring in the world can't do anything if someone is mentally ill and doesn't want to take their meds.

Chances are good that if Trebat is who R9 says he is, he has been in and out of numerous treatment facilities and that the family has been on a roller coaster, involved with lawyers and doctors, to no avail.

by Anonymousreply 20August 12, 2021 11:12 AM

Poor, poor thing, R20.

by Anonymousreply 21August 12, 2021 11:26 AM

Why they no use the Kung fu on attacker?

by Anonymousreply 22August 12, 2021 11:59 AM

Oh my Lai

by Anonymousreply 23August 12, 2021 12:08 PM

Drugs / mental illness is my guess. That neighborhood isn’t an urban area in terms of restaurants, busy shops, etc - just homes and some embassies, no real place for people to congregate or hang out. The attacker must have been wandering around.

by Anonymousreply 24August 12, 2021 12:11 PM

LOL. That wasn't meant to invoke sympathy for the attacker, R21

Just to explain why someone from a seemingly stable background is out on the streets, insane and attacking passerby.

We need to have ways to get these people off the streets and into some sort of facility or there will be many more beatings and killings.

Our right to walk safely in the street overrides their right to live on the streets and menace people.

by Anonymousreply 25August 12, 2021 12:19 PM

I bet the sympathy here is lower because he is Asian. The amount of racism and double standards here is shocking. This is a horrible attack.

by Anonymousreply 26August 12, 2021 12:33 PM

[quote]Drugs / mental illness is my guess.

Why is “mental illness” always the go-to? Some people are just flat out evil and it has nothing to do with mental illness.

by Anonymousreply 27August 12, 2021 12:49 PM

Because generally non-mentally ill people who attack minorities travel in packs R27 and are showing off to each other.

It's a pretty safe bet that a solo unprovoked assailant who has had zero prior contact with the people he's attacking is mentally ill

by Anonymousreply 28August 12, 2021 12:55 PM

R27 some people group those kind of sociopaths into the category of mentally ill. They also seem more rare…

by Anonymousreply 29August 12, 2021 12:57 PM

It's ironic how the Asian troll who starts these threads regarding attacks on Asians is ALWAYS jumping at the chance to blame black people...yet when the assailant is white, they lament the way the story is underreported because the victim is Asian.

Hopefully one day they learn their bigotry doesn't endear them to other bigots.

by Anonymousreply 30August 12, 2021 3:05 PM

[Quote] Drugs / mental illness is my guess.

Only white attackers get those excuses.

If the attacker were black, we would have gotten a slew of “Blacks hate Asians” and “All Blacks are violent criminals” responses from the DL trolls
