Amazon Prime Video has put most of its LGBTQ titles behind a pay wall
...and it has deleted its LGBTQ category.
When I first signed up about a year ago, there were scores of free titles. This was a welcome distinction from other streaming services such as Netflix, HBO, and Disney, where LGBTQ offerings are sparse. Now there are only a handful of "free" titles available on Prime. The vast majority are now paywalled, and the rental prices are generally higher than "mainstream" movies.
Amazon has been called out before for homophobic executive actions, such as making contributions to politicians opposed to the Equality Act.
Is this change due to Amazon Prime's new management, or is it a sign of America's increasing general intolerance exerting its pressure on the company?
And are there any gay-friendlier streaming services? Because I'd rather throw my money at them.

Nope, I went out just now and the LGBTQ category is still there, it hasn't been deleted.

Nor only that, the first page when I go to browse movies is majority gay.

Just scrolled through the LGBTQ category and stopped when I got to over 100 programs/movies free with Prime. I don't know how many used to be free with Prime but I do know that nothing for the last year or two that I've wanted to watch has EVER been free with Prime, they've really cut back on ALL categories.

They still charge for most of these titles though.
The greedy bastards.
I need to hook up with a software developer and start my own streaming platform.

There seems to be a majority not free. Or not there. I had to use Tubi to see God's Own County, (UK) Queer as Folk, and Southern Baptist Sissies. I think I saw a few other Del Shores things on Netflix but not Prime.
Del Shores is sorta trashy but fun. Southern Baptist Sissies is in a different category for him. Better than the Southern family dramas he usually writes.

There's a big difference between Amazon having very little free on Prime, and OP's lie that Amazon had deleted the LGBTQ category AND put almost everything behind a paywall.
Isn't anyone curious why OP said all that?

I think it's different on a TV. I have a 2020-model UHD Sony, and the LGBTQ category is definitely missing. And there definitely aren't 100+ of "free" titles popping up.

R6, please stop with your idiotic conspiracy theories, you silly troll. The category is missing on my TV, and most of the LGBTQ titles are, indeed, paywalled. Period.

Amazon has put a lot of films behind a paywall (or only with ads) but nothing discriminatory in their selection I can see.
Note that the main page of the app only shows a selection of available films. For more you need to do a Search and then filter by Free with Prime.

The categories on the TV app never had the full selection that the website shows, though. I've had Prime for several years and all I've ever seen are a few generic categories: TV, Movies, Originals, Kids.
When I search "LGBT" on the TV app I get tons of suggestions and results. Try it yourself. All I had to type was "LG" and the rest filled in. The first result was "lgbtq prime movies for men" and I'm getting about 25% free with Prime results, which is almost the same ratio I get with other categories like mystery or comedy.
OP/R8, you posted a lie, hoping it would cause an uproar and he'd get one of those tiresome threads where Dataloungers bitched incessantly about a problem that doesn't actually exist. You failed. Instead of whining, just go post another lie, it's not like you won't eventually hit pay dirt.

Yup. I added several gay and non-gay titles to My List several months ago. They were all free at the time. Most of the non-gay titles are still free; most of the gay titles are not. I think this change happened right after Pride Month. Not sure why though.

Amazon changes prices and product offerings all the time. Not sure I would read anything into this.
When they come out with a new product, they underprice things to drive interest and get buy-in as well as diminish competitors in the market.
Then the prices go up to what they would have been normally.

Almost all major corporations make contributions to both sides.
Also the main groups pushing the Equality Act currently are gender-confused and trans, which wouldn't necessarily be "homophobic".

Look, if you Dataloungers as a whole want to get upset first thing in the morning because someone claimed that Amazon deleted the LGBT category and made all the gay content pay-only after Pride, be my guest.

At the moment, Tubi has the most - 200 LGBTQ movies. Netflix's gay collection continues to grow smaller. I was looking through Amazon myself last night and a search for LGBTQ movies brings up some movies. I do tend to agree the selection is smaller than it used to be.

Luckily nothing of value was lost. Most LGBTQ titles are terrible.

I’m going to flip the script here-
Shows like POSE garnered interest. Renewing contracts, measuring demand and negotiations drove up price. A lot of gay distribution was on a shoestring budget years ago (especially foreign) and they need to make money the second time around to continue business and fund new projects. It’s actually great proof that people want and will pay and support us.
Basically your argument has nothing to do with discrimination but that you don’t want to have to pay anything extra for gay content. There is a massive shift in media happening because of COVID and how people are consuming content.
Also, prices are coming down, I bought the movie “Sublet” for $8 because it was just $3 more than renting it. I also paid for the recent season of POSE because I don’t like commercials and it wasn’t free on any of the streaming platforms vet.

On the Amazon website (or app), is there a way to "Refine" or filter the LGBTQ categories to show the free titles only? I'm using the mobile app and I can't find this option. Maybe I need to switch to the desktop version?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 11, 2021 11:07 AM

Never mind. I switched to the desktop version and answered my own question. I stand by my initial claim that many more LGBTQ titles are now paywalled, which is a shame. Maybe they're trying to push customers to subscribe to Prime's Dekkoo channel? Whatever the case, it's definitely a regressive step.
On Sony TVs, there isn't an LGBTQ category per se under the Categories section. However, an LGBTQ category/section used to appear under the Home tab. I don't know why it was set up that way. In any event, the only way I can target LGBTQ titles through my TV now is if I do a Search for them. And, again, the majority of them are now paywalled.
No worries. I've gleaned enough information from this thread to know that I'll have to look elsewhere for free LGBTQ titles. Tubi is great, as other posters here have noted. I'll probably try Dekkoo (finally), but I'll definitely try the standalone app rather than purchasing it as a prime channel. I recently did the mistake of subscribing to Starz and Epix as Prime channels, only to find out that not all titles are available.
A case in point is Now Apocalypse, which is free on the Starz standalone app (with a subscription), but is only available for rental or purchase on Prime, even with a Starz channel subscription.

R21 On the Android app at least, first do your search then check off Filter > Ways to Watch > Included with Prime. This resets after each search, so you have to redo it when you search again.

Amazon Prime has put lots of stuff behind the paywall. Not just LGBTQ. I used to find lots of stuff to watch on Prime, but over the past year, there has been virtually nothing. Netflix and HBO Max are much better. I only keep Prime for free shipping since I do a lot more online shopping since the beginning of the pandemic. But I am seriously thinking of not renewing next year. When The Great starts up again, I’ll probably start my Hulu subscription again, which I have let lapse.

I'm with R27. HBO Max is probably my favorite at the moment because 1) it offers recent titles periodically, 2) it features several classic titles, and 3) it has the DC Comics hub.
My second fave is Tubi. Fantastic collection, all free with intermittent ads.
Next is probably Netflix, but there are too many cheesy flicks.
Vudu is probably next. Same concept as Tubi, but it's not as easy to sort through the content.
Next is Prime.
I agree that Starz and Epix have some great content too, especially the series (Spartacus, American Gods, The White Queen, The White Princess, The Spanish Princess, Britannia, etc, all great).
Next is Disney (but mainly for the Marvel stuff; the rest of the content is geared more toward kids).
YouTube has some good free full movies.
Of course there's also the stuff to rent/buy, but what's the point when there's so much free stuff?
I'm not too familiar with FreeForm nor the Roku Channel.
I haven't tried Hulu nor AppleTV at all.
After reading through this thread, I'm interested in trying Dekkoo's 7-day trial offer.

This is becoming increasingly frustrating, I'll put something on my watch list and go back to watch it a week or two later only to discover it's longer included with Prime. I have also noticed that when something on Prime becomes available on a different streaming app it's no longer free with Prime.

During Pride, Black HIstory Month, Women's HIstory Month, Latino Heritage Month, etc., Hulu will have their respective category on the front page, it [italic]looks[/italic] like a lot of content but I search for individual movies/shows and have never clicked on the actual categories to see. It's also possible they have additional content specifically for those months.

I am mostly interested in the free shipping so I treat the films as an add-on. But am not happy with the numbers I am being asked to pay for.
Most gay movies are shit but sometimes one wants mindless entertainment.

I don't think I have sought out a gay movie because it's a gay movie since I was about 20, which was 23 years ago. As R33 says, most gay movies are not very good, and so I just look for entertainment that's good, not based on who bangs whom.
Besides that, not many TV shows made in the last 5-10 years have not prominently featured gay relationships. I would rather watch gay characters casually woven into a storyline than an amateurish movie centered on a gay coming out story, etc.

I noticed this when Gay Pride month was going on and the streaming services were all promoting Gay movies. I would click on one and there was a charge or it was only available on Dektoo… I didn’t go any further.

I just checked out Dekkoo, and there was nothing I'd be interested in. The monthly subscription is $9.99. I watch Tubi more than any other streaming service I have available to me. And that includes Amazon, Netflix, and HBOMax.

Considering the "Equality" act re-defines sex as bullshit "gender" and lets the radical "Trans" self-identify, biology or genetics be damned, it is actually homophobic to support the Equality act which would make homosexuality become obsolete (no biological sex = no same sex attraction).
