Gavin Newsom on Shaky Ground Six Weeks Out From California Recall Election

by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 10, 2021 5:11 PM |
It’s actually mostly white Republicans from Northern Cali and Trumpy Republican areas, i.e. Orange County, Manhattan Beach who were fighting tooth and nail for the recall. I believe Newsom recently won a court case because the CA Republicans we’re trying to sue Newsom and Democratic Party to not to be able to name Republicans as the ones responsible for the recall. Repubs lost that case.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 10, 2021 5:52 PM |
They wanted to make it appear as if the it was a general consensus that everyone wanted him recalled, when it’s really just the Republican/ Trump supporters.

I'm a native Californian and I don't even understand the recall nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 10, 2021 6:18 PM |
R3, the movement never would have happened if not for anger over California's shutdown. California shut down harder than most states and yet became the epicenter of the pandemic anyway last winter, which made people think that all the sacrifice was for nothing. The recall effort really picked up steam during that time, which is how the GOP was able to get enough signatures to recall him. He didn't help matters by dining out mask-less at an incredibly expensive restaurant with a lobbyist, which is ultimately meaningless but from an optics point of view was a disaster.
Had the recall election happened in June, Newsom would have beaten it easily. I think the major reason Newsom is in danger now is because people think that he might shut down the state again because of the Delta variant. For what it's worth, I don't think that's going to happen and I don't support the recall.
The good news is that even if he's recalled, the leading contender to replace him is a Democrat. The bad news is that he is a YouTube star and 'landlord influencer' with no experience in government.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 10, 2021 6:32 PM |
He’ll serve another elected term. He’s a great governor
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 10, 2021 7:07 PM |
Republicans have been trying to recall him since Day One (basically). I think this is the fifth or sixth petition? I've lost count. The first petition to recall him was filed three months after he took office. I don't recall what the stated "reason" was then (illegal immigration?), but it's immaterial. They just didn't like the outcome of the 2018 election, plain & simple.

He shut down restaurants, bars, and businesses while other states didn’t and infringed on people’s freedoms and their ability to work.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 11, 2021 2:06 AM |
And he put his hypocrisy on display when he wined and and dined with other elites at a fancy restaurant when restrictions were in place. Rules for him and rules for the rest of us.

He’s unpopular for how he handled the shutdown and hurt small businesses. Plus people hate him for going maskless at the fancy French Laundry in Napa indoors. He seems bourgeoisie and out of touch, a snob.

I am voting for him to be out. I signed and mailed the recall form. In LA we have been locked down and were the first to implement a mask mandate. These shutdowns, mandates, and pivots are really hurting local businesses. The homelessness is out of control, gas and taxes are high, and the state is in a very bad place. It might have started out as Trump supporters, than the Latino community, and then basically any small business owner. We need a change. Newsom is just a sleazy, crooked politician.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 11, 2021 2:52 AM |
For me, it is his absolute obliviousness to how much the quality of life has deteriorated for the working and middle class while he has been governor.
There was a story in the press recently about how Newsom has said privately that problems like homelessness, housing costs, water shortages, wildfires, etc. just don't have a solution. My response was "Then get the fuck out of the way and let somebody else try."

All the candidates are trash and this is GOP manipulation. I am concerned about DEM turnout but hope Gavin pulls through. You do not want GOP to control California. They will make Feinstein step down and there goes the senate majority and we are back to McConnell this recall is not a joke.

BERKELEY, Calif. - Gov. Gavin Newsom visited a homeless encampment and helped remove debris in Berkeley on Monday, joining a Caltrans crew cleaning up a long-standing encampment along Interstate 80 at University Avenue.
The team of state outreach workers also offered options for unhoused people to move out of their tents and into shelters or other housing.
The governor said the state needs to develop a humane process for moving people and clearing camps while also creating more housing options.
"What you see here is unacceptable," Newsom said. "We had a big fire here. This is a high safety risk, a public health risk. There are hundreds and hundreds of rats running around. People should not live in conditions like this and we've accepted it too long."

by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 12, 2021 3:26 AM |
Newsom will win *if* urban turnout is high. The rednecks will be out in force. Does Newsom excite the Democratic base?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 12, 2021 3:34 AM |
R47 Not necessarily. Whenever I'm out having conversations with people, I'm shocked by how many people really hate Newsom. And these are not trashy people I'm talking about. Their young adults in college, business people, people of all races, young and old alike. Even a trans person I know hated him. I was really stunned. It's like the media coverage has no correlation at all with what you see on the street.
Also add in the fact that Covid is less a partisan issue than Democrats like to think. Everyone I know is not for lockdowns and a shockingly high number of people I've met who are not LGBTQ (suffice to say probably not Republican) have at least some issue with the way the governor handled the pandemic. The most shocking to me were the ones who had reservations about the vaccine and were open about it. While I'm pro vaccine, the internet made me believe that my views were in the extreme minority however that doesn't appear to be the case.

Been telling you for a year that GQP has been pushing its agenda to get rid of governors in NY & CA. They had GOP gov in NY til 2003 and in CA til 2006. These are not states where Republicans never get elected. Hell, NYC had 20 years of GQP mayors until 2014. GQP wants voter laws changed in NY & CA, wants to reduce even more congressional districts, wants to make vast changes as Governor on their way out and then take power away from governors by executive order right before leaving office.
This is a political long plan.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 12, 2021 3:50 AM |
Newsom will get, by far, the most votes. However, he needs to get more than 50 percent, while a challenger could win with a tiny plurality of votes. Typical Republican strategy--they can't get actual majorities, so they manipulate the system in whatever way possible.
I don't know anyone who hates Newsom. They think he's been trying his best in an extremely difficult situation. And, given that there's an election next year, they're pissed about the money being spent on this recall.
See, even if a Republican does get in, he'll be out a year later. In the meantime, we'll have fucking gridlock again and we had years of that.
The Republicans lost California because they're racist assholes who are counting on most voters not being really tuned in to the consequences of the recall.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Three days after Gov. Gavin Newsom celebrated his 2018 election victory, one of his major corporate campaign donors caused a mass killing.
The Pacific Gas and Electric Company pleaded guilty in June 2020 to felony involuntary manslaughter for killing 84 Californians in the 2018 Camp Fire.
PG&E’s officials walked out of court to go back to work on turning a profit, aided by state policies Newsom crafted to help the company.
. “Even when they are held criminally responsible, nobody actually takes that responsibility. So what's to stop them?”
In the months after the crime, Newsom not only signed new financial protections for PG&E into law, his office hired private lawyers in New York who wrote the legislative language.
Confidential emails and documents obtained by ABC10 reveal the New York law offices of law firm O’Melvany and Myers drafted AB 1054 in the Spring of 2019, before it was introduced in the state legislature.

An email from private attorneys working for Gov. Gavin Newsom with a draft version of AB 1054 attached.
The documents were obtained as part of ABC10’s news series FIRE - POWER - MONEY: How Governor Gavin Newsom Protected PG&E, which investigated how California gave financial protections to PG&E by the state government in the wake of crimes.
AB 1054 resulted in PG&E obtaining official state safety certificates for two fire seasons since the Camp Fire.
The law was written by the lawyers under a contract to represent Newsom’s office in PG&E’s bankruptcy, state records show.
After AB 1054 was already signed into law, drafting of legislation was added to an amended version of O’Melvany’s contract.
Payment records obtained through state transparency laws show O’Melvany billed California taxpayers $3 million during the time when the law took shape.
Investment bank Guggenheim also participated in crafting AB 1054 and charged $3.7 million during that time.
Adding to concerns about a lack of independence of PG&E’s state regulators, the emails reveal that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) was assigned to write sections of AB 1054 by Newsom’s hired attorneys.
The CPUC, which prosecutors say harmed the Camp Fire criminal investigations, did not respond to a list of written questions for this report.
The agency is refusing to hand over its communications with key Newsom staffers around the time it waived a $200 million fine to help PG&E exit bankruptcy, prompting ABC10 to file suit under state transparency laws.
Newsom benefited from $208,400 in political contributions from PG&E to help him win his 2018 run for governor.

As a Dem/Newsom voter, take issue with this statement, R79.
If Newsom were [bold] intelligent[/bold] we would not be going through this expensive, labor-intensive recall in the middle of a burgeoning PANDEMIC.
If Gavin were [bold]compassion(ate)[/bold], he would understand the challenges required in a community when asking the 5th largest economy to go into lockdown during a developing pandemic. And he would NOT then flaunt the very fact that he instated a lockdown by flagrantly defying the lockdown whilst enjoying a very pricy thousand dollar meal at French Laundry restaurant.
No, Gavin Newsom is a fool and is somewhat responsible for this mess we find ourselves embroiled in.
I haven’t decided if I’ll acknowledge this recall as I am very angry with the dolt. If I do, it will be only to prevent an insane sociopathic person from replacing him.
But I will be happy to see the backside of Gavin Newsom.
(* And if he were truly “hard working”, many of those in his populace would have perceived this and been enthusiastic about supporting him. We’re apathetic because he’s been disappointing. Geez, the guy and his team even failed to get the term “Democrat” affiliated with the recall paperwork (due to incomplete/incorrect paperwork filing) and attempted to fix this by going to court to have a judge “enable” him to address his mess.)

I’m R82.
Doing the same.
I’m flummoxed about the whole affair. I am a Dem that was generally satisfied with Jerry (Brown) and as with anyone was willing to give Newsom a go. His smug, hypocritical insincerity (and incompetence; and just speaking of the small details - his failure in properly citing himself on the recall ballot - speak volumes.)
As another poster noted, Newsom has privately moaned that CA’s wildfires, homelessness, drought, etc. have no solution. Then GET OUT and let someone else give their best effort; because, Gavin, you seemed too obsessed with preening, doing coke and going to super expensive restaurants with lobbyists whilst your constituents are in a lockdown that YOU mandated.
At this point I am undecided as I don’t want Fascist-level incompetency in the state of CA.
But I don’t want Gavin either.
It’s a no win situation.

If you don't like Gavin, vote for someone else in 2022 when there's a normal election, but voting for the recall means we could end up with a total nutjob for governor. With 45 of them running, you could get a governor who got a whopping 3 percent of the vote. It's not like there's an obvious winner out of that pile.
The Republicans are fucking nuts--we get one of those and we'll be in the same situation as Texas and Florida with massive death tolls from COVID on our hands.
THe answer on this one is so fucking obvious that I don't believe anyone who says they're a California Democrat, but they're going to vote for the recall. It's clear and obvious Republican/Boris trolling. The whole recall is, actually. The GOP knows anyone that gets elected will get kicked out a year later, but they'll have "owned" the Democrats in the biggest blue state. (And one that's been recovering economically from the pandemic better than most, but the GOP makes sure you don't hear about *that.*)
They don't give a fuck about people dying from COVID. It's fucking pathological.

by Anonymous | reply 109 | August 15, 2021 1:42 AM |
R108 The issue is that the lockdowns and restrictions didn't prevent California from having one of the highest infection rates in the country. There was no enforcement in minority communities because of "lack of education". Meanwhile, responsible law abiding citizens paid the biggest economic price while leadership made excuse after excuse. There was no attempt made to secure the border or even vet those coming in. It was all political theater built on lies and half truths and phony moralizing. If you need any more proof of that, just see how Newsom and his political allies flaunted the rules whenever it suited them.
California's economic "recovery" hasn't trickled down to the masses. We need someone who will take on Silicon Valley, not someone who is in bed with them.

As long as the Democrats come out in the same percentages as the Republicans, Newsom's in good shape. Polling is also looking better with likely voters opposing the recall 57:42.

To summarize Nate says that 48.8% of California voters oppose the recall. Removal of first-term Gov. Gavin Newsom is backed by 47.6%.. That is to say too close to call.
19.3% of voters would replace Newsom with Republican Larry Elder.
Democrat Kevin Paffrath is second at 9.1%, followed by Republican John Cox at 6.1%, among the replacement candidates.
I wonder if the California democratic party now wishes Gavin hadn't prevented any name democrats from being placed on the ballot.

R155 Ballots are dropped off with party registration attached. The Republicans have been counting on Democrats not bothering to vote. That doesn't look like what's happening. Carla Marinucci is a writer for Politico.
FYI Nate Silver doesn't do polling, he aggregates and analyzes. There was a bad Survey USA poll back at the beginning of August where Newsom was behind by 9. Survey USA is an A-rated pollster, but even the best pollsters can get an outlier. Every other poll shows Newsom hanging on. No one's expecting high turn-out, but mail-in ballots will help boost turn-out. Newsom is focusing on turning out his base rather than independent voters who are less likely to vote. Democrats have a huge registration advantage over Republicans.
Pollsters and pundits were assuming that Democratic turn-out would be low compared to GOP turn-out because they're less enthusiastic about the recall (can't imagine why) However, the GOP candidate roster is such a fucking shit show that Democrats in NoCal, at least, are getting out. Every bit of bad COVID news out of Florida and Texas helps Newsom. A dinner at the French Laundry doesn't look so bad next to a crazed governor trying to ban mask mandates in schools.
The last Republican who won a statewide election in California was Schwarzenegger more than 10 years ago--and Arnie wasn't a death-cult loon.

R166 Republicans were absentee, but Dump made them all so anxious about voter fraud that more of them are day-of and drop-off. However, since it's such a weird election there aren't very many polling places. There's one in my city of 65,000. There are a number of drop-off ballot boxes as well as the mail-in option.
That said, Dump's not part of this, so there's not the same push to vote in-person on election day, so I don't actually think there's going to be a GOP-saving surge on election day since both Democrats and Republicans are turning out in above average numbers already.
It is mostly old white people, which helps Republicans but only to a certain extent--California has a bunch of old white liberals, particularly in the Bay area.
Basically, the GOP has to convince independents to vote for the recall--they got the Mexicans to vote for Schwarzenegger and both Blacks and Mexicans to vote for Prop 8 (anti-gay marriage), but for the most part they aren't that successful. Blacks do vote, but they're not a big chunk of the electorate. Asians are pretty good about voting--they're reliable moderate Democrats, but a lot of them hate affirmative action. Newsom hasn't done anything to trigger them. The Mexicans will undervote as usual.. No one's really reaching out to them.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, a board-certified internist, TV host, and podcaster, told "The Brian Kilmeade Show" Friday he expects California Gov. Gavin Newsom to be recalled after his "mishandling" of the coronavirus pandemic.
"You can't imagine what life is like in California…you don't get how bad it is, and that's why [Newsom’s] in trouble," Dr. Drew told Fox News's Brian Kilmeade. "You need only walk out of your house to see how things are deteriorating…It's so astonishing that the average person just can't abide by it any longer…I'll be surprised if he's not recalled."
"It doesn't matter on…what side of the partisan divide you are [on]. Everyone in California knows how horrible life is there and how disgusting things have gotten," Dr. Drew continued. "Disgust is a very powerful emotion. It makes people change."
Newsom has long been criticized for his handling of the pandemic, including strict coronavirus lockdowns, slammed for decimating businesses, and requiring students to wear masks in the classroom.
"There was so much incompetence on the part of the public health officials in Los Angeles and the government…the mayor…the governor," Dr. Drew added. "[Officials] closed our beaches and parks, the exact environment where they should have been encouraging the population to go, outdoors, breathe fresh air, exercise."

R174, it's more about the percentage of the vote--Arnie got around a third of the Hispanic vote, which is a lot for a Republican and more than the overall percentage of Democrats who voted for him (18 percent).
I don't see Elder having that kind of pull. Also, at the time of the recall, Gov. Grey Davis' ratings were in the 20s. Newsom's most recent approval rating (end of July) was 56 percent.
10 percent of the ballots have been returned, which is good news for Newsom.

Hopefully the word has gotten out to vote NO so we don’t end up with a crazy R governor who ruins things before being voted out. I enjoyed the NYT The Daily podcast on the recall, as both reporters tried their best to not act horrified at the candidates trying to replace Newsom.

Voted "No" today. Wrote in Eleni Kounalakis, the Lt. Gov. I understand it won't really count unless she's willing to be a write-in candidate, but it's my way of protesting the stupidity of this recall.
Democrats continue to outstrip Republicans in both actual numbers and percentage who have voted. 19 percent of registered Democrats have voted, 16 percent of the Republicans, 12 percent of the independents. More Democrats have voted than GOP and indies combined. 16 percent of all ballots have been returned, which is just a bit behind the numbers for the 2020 presidential election.
While one poll had 16 percent of Biden voters saying they'd vote for the recall, overall this is good news for Newsom--registered Democrats don't want a Florida or Texas COVID disaster, which is what a Republican would mean.

𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
SACRAMENTO, CA—Larry Elder's campaign for governor of California was thrown into turmoil today after Gavin Newsom's anti-recall campaign produced never-before-seen yearbook photos showing Larry Elder wearing blackface.
"This is beyond the pale," said French Chef Pierre D’issoir, who is running Newsom's campaign. "Not only is Larry Elder totally a white supremacist, but we now have proof that he wore blackface as a young man in college! Absolument honteux!"
Newsom will be spending $12 million in predominately black areas of Southern California to remind black voters that Elder is a fake black person—and that pasty white millionaire, winery owner, and French cuisine connoisseur Gavin Newsom is a better choice for the black community than Larry Elder.
"Sometimes we need to spend millions of dollars to remind minorities what's best for them," said Newsom. "Right now, what's best for them is being locked in their homes and given forced vaccinations. Larry Elder will try to come in and offer to lower their taxes, give them jobs, and heal their communities, but the thing that really matters here is that he wore blackface."
The scandal deepened later that afternoon when Larry Elder made an appearance, still wearing blackface.

Vote NO, r214.
by Anonymous | reply 219 | August 31, 2021 10:24 PM |
18 percent of the ballots in--Democrats have returned 21 percent of their outstanding ballots, Republicans 18 percent, indies 14 percent. Voters continue to skew old and white, though the middle-aged are making headway.
The GOP can't pull this off on its own--they need indies and the indies don't look like they're turning out in great numbers.
For those who think there will be a miracle day-of voting turn-out--unlikely. There are very few polling places compared to earlier elections. Plenty of drop-off boxes for those who don't trust the mails, but in-person voting options are really limited. In my county, there are 19 polling places and more than a million registered voters.

The break down as of 8/30 from Rob Pyers' twitter gathered from the Ca SOS:
Eyes on Los Angeles: 942,794k returned. This number alone offsets most of the Red ballots cast through the state as of 8/30. Los Angeles usually breaks 35%+ Democrat. They are @ 16% returned. If they can double that by election day Gavin should win.
The other significant counties to watch are San Diego, San Benito, San Bernardino, Santa Clara, Sacramento, Riverside, San Francisco, and Orange.

The outcome will come down to LA County Latino voters. Did Gavin Newsom and Democrats effectively campaig with L.A Latino voters? Amazingly the answer is NO, not surprising if you have followed how Democrats usually ignore the Latin communities throughout the Southwest. Local Hispanic organizations are doing most of the heavy lifting for Democrats. They'll come through for Democrats as they are a reliable Democratic block, but the take away is not something positive. Some of these politicians will learn the hard way that you cannot keep ignoring one of the biggest blocks that puts you in power. I don't think we are that far away from a Latino governor (Democratic, Independent, or Republican).

VOTE NO (on the first question of your ballot). There are 2 questions on this ballot, the first question VOTE NO.
The second question leave blank. A write in does not count. The people on that list are not sane. They are not qualified for this position.
VOTE NO (on first question on your ballot).

by Anonymous | reply 225 | September 1, 2021 2:58 AM |
R223 Not that kind of election. The focus is on getting out the base. The Republicans haven't won a statewide race in California in more than 10 years. The GOP was hoping that this weird election would be ignored by most voters, particularly as Republicans were more enthusiastic about the recall than other groups. HOWEVER, if there's normal turn-out, the Republicans lose. Not extraordinary, all hands on deck, just ordinary.
The majority of voters in California are older white people. They, not surprisingly, make up most of the GOP, but they're also the largest chunk of the state Democratic party as well. There are nearly a million more white Democrats than Republicans in the state. Throw in your reliable Asian and Black voting base and you have your majority. Latinos are a nice add to the mix, but they consistently undervote. (And a lot of them aren't eligible.)
The biggest split is gender. Which is why Elizabeth Warren came out to play. Women like her and Newsom wants women to vote.
Independent voters also tend to skew more toward Democrats than Republicans.
It has been predicted to be close, but I'm now thinking Newsom will beat the recall by bigger margins than people think. Too much craziness in the GOP hellholes of Texas and Florida.

by Anonymous | reply 256 | September 9, 2021 3:18 AM |
Even though the media was trying to hype the election the numbers always favored Newsom. When you poll Southern California Newsom always had the numbers because Los Angeles county and Southern California are home to the second largest democratic block in the state, Latinos. We go through this every election cycle and every election cycle it is proven right. It's never close because Democrats are favored 66-75% among Latino households. When polls overrepresent Northern California and its red counties you get polls that are much closer between the two parties. When you factor the whole state Democrats make ground on Republicans.
Remember always look at the raw data when reading polls. Los Angeles county has Newsom between Good and Excellent. It is exactly where you want him to be in your biggest county. Then, look at the Leading GOP hopeful polling at 26%. The low index number tells you there is not enough enthusiasm among Republican voters for any of their candidates. There is a lack of incentive for Republicans to overtake Democratic voters in the election. It's a nice wake-up call for California Democratic politicians, but Newsom was never in a losing position. Then you have people spreading disinformation about the likeability of Democrats in the state, how the recall came to be, or making false statements about Latinos and other minority and their voting patterns. People have to learn to recognize the misinformation so they can put it aside and vote to their benefit. Part of the goal is to demoralize Democratic voters into not voting: "oh well, it seems like everyone wants him out. My vote won't change the outcome." By now we should know better, ignore the noise and vote and help the people around you vote. Drive them if you have to.
