Joan Van Ark looks worse than Kurt Cobain's corpse.
I hope they film her parts in a blacked-out room.

Seriously, though, has Donna Mills's face actually moved in 34 years? I mean, apart from when making room for the botox cement and steel girder trucks to back up to her face..??

Ha r1! I was just thinking…too bad they can’t get Joan’s original face to reunite with her!

R3 How about a show featuring only the hideous plastic surgery failures sitting together on a couch telling each other how normal they still look? They could show little interview segments off to the side where friends and relatives discuss what these women used to look like, and all the work they used to get before they went to Guatemala for a cheap face-lift.
We could call it "Hack Job!"

Joan's bad plastic surgery would the elephant in the room
No way to have this much-wanted reunion show without addressing it
Maybe she had to go into Witness Protection and the government forced her to use a bad surgeon
Maybe she was in Nexvm-type cult where the leader forced her to have bad procedures
I just want to hear Lilimae's ethereal image say to Val, "Child, what have you done to yourself?"

Knot's Landing was the nighttime soap most like a daytime soap and is probably why it outlasted all the others. But I'm not sure if it was showy enough to warrant a reboot or some kind of follow up movie this far away from the original run.
Question, was Knot's Landing a suburb of Los Angeles?

by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 8, 2021 6:35 AM |
I loved the show, but yeah, it's too late to a reunion at this point. Maybe 5-10 years ago and only if David Jacobs was heavily involved.
The Back the Cul De Sac reunion mini series they did in 1997 sucked because the person they had do it had no idea of the history of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 8, 2021 6:40 AM |
I can't fathom why they go to the trouble of a reunion and then hire a sucky writer. I heard David Jacobs offered to consult on the Dallas revival but they passed.
Unreal.
There were some good moments in the revival but overall, it was done by people who didn't know the show.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 8, 2021 6:46 AM |
Maybe they could cross it over with that Munsters revival I've heard about and have Val and Gary as reanimated corpses. Alec Baldwin could appear as Joshua's ghost!

It’s not that she had bad plastic surgery, it’s that she’s had so much plastic surgery! She’s been getting work done since the 80s! 30 years of face lifts and fillers etc. will start to look bad on some faces.

I think she started fucking with her nose around 1984. There's a big change in Val's face between S5 and S6. I think something similar happened in 1987, because her face changed considerably around that time, too.
I'm guessing Michele had a face lift around 1986.

The 1997 reunion was so bad that I forget it exists.
According to Ann Marcus, David Jacobs and Michael Filerman weren't very interested in making the reunion. They wanted Ann to write a script where a Sid Fairgate look-alike would have returned, posing as Sid, to break up Mack and Karen. Shudder. Don Murray, Michele Lee, and Kevin Dobson would have been unbearable in that triangle and over two nights? Forget it.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 8, 2021 12:38 PM |
I would have liked a fake Sid. I love Karen
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 8, 2021 12:40 PM |
Van Ark just needs darker make up... she makes this odd choice to wash herself out with light colours that emphasize the work. Why paint your lips paler than your skin tone?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 8, 2021 12:42 PM |
I love Karen, too, but I worry the guys would have hogged all the air in the room in that triangle.
My favorite Karen moment in the series was when she locked herself in the trunk of a Jaguar to solve a crime and exonerate another lead character. The way Karen so gamely hops into the trunk and closes it, crying out that she did it in a gleeful voice, is priceless.

I’m glad some posters mentioned that Joan started messing with her face decades ago. I remember then how dramatically different she started looking. This link isn’t the greatest evidence of this, but it’s the best I could find looking quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 8, 2021 1:15 PM |
Of course they want a reunion. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and so many others couldn't resist working. But it will never happen for the Knots crew. Takes money and there is just not enough interest. The execs would want the story to focus on the younger generation...and not even Karen's kids, but Karen's grandkids: the 25 to 30 year olds. And we don't know the grandkids. The children were dull enough, but the grandchildren would be like launching a whole new show. So, the true potential viewers would see the core cast only 20% of the time, the rest on new people.
Also, the show started with Knots as a middle class enclave but everyone gradually got rich as the 1980s went on and the interiors of their homes did not meet the modest exteriors. I don't know if new viewers would understand rich people living in small ranch homes with neighbors so close. Audiences have been so trained today that houses define a character. And the show just cannot work away from the cul de sac.
Also, as OP said, Knots is not streaming, so no new fan base or older fans up on the intricacies. I would however watch an intelligently done cast reunion, with a good host who knew his or her Knots history.

What is it about those nose jobs that age so horribly? They're so extreme that as a woman's face ages. the tiny boneless noses have no support and seem to crumble into their faces. Joan's and Michelle's noses have the same issues that the aged Ann Miller's and Nanette Fabray's did.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 8, 2021 1:49 PM |

R21, Knot's Landing was supposed to be near the ocean, i.e., one of the LA beach suburbs like Palos Verdes. The actual cul-de-sac filmed for the opening credits was in Granada Hills which is nowhere near the beach.

With California property values where they are right now, having millionaires living in ranch homes (which are now probably worth over $1 million) does make sense, but…
What doesn’t make sense is a group of neighbors being this friendly in 2021. Who the hell hangs out with their neighbors like Val, Karen and Laura did today? It made sense when more women stayed at home, but now?
As someone mentioned above, the principal actors are too old or dead. The actors that played their children are in their 50s, and the only two of those actors with name recognition in 2021 are Nicolette Sheridan and Brian Austin Green. I don’t see anyone greenlighting a show with those two as the big draw.
This is the wishful thinking of three old bags, who haven’t realized that life passed them by on Wilshire, as they were driving to the plastic surgeon for another tuneup.

When was the last time you were in the suburbs? Oh they all hate each other and envy each other and try to outdo each other, but they still congregate. They usually come together via the children who go to school together and they develop relationships that way. If the children don't bring them together, it's usually the hatred for either a neighbor (usually a woman) or a particular house that they can't stand which unites them.

Laura, as an outsider with acerbic wit who never quite fit into the main group, was someone I identified with as a gay teenager.

R61 Gary wasn’t independently wealthy until Jock died. Before then, Miss. Ellie bought ALL the cul de sac houses (go big or go home) one of which was for Gary & Val to start anew after years of being terrorized by JR. (This detail was never brought up again…I mean are we supposed to believe everyone else in the cul de sac was renting from a Ewing Oil subsidiary?) But as far as Gary, don’t forget JR hired a bunch of good ole boys to literally steal infant Lucy away from dirt poor teenage Valene and deliver her to Jock and Miss. Ellie. Anyway, Gary and Val were game and Gary got a job selling cars for Sid. Lucy tried to give it a chance with Gary and Valene, but please: Lucy was way too spoiled for boring middle class Knots Landing. Damn, these plot points are giving me chills!

My cousin in Idaho named her daughter "Courtney Grace" so she could call her "Ciji" after Lisa Hartman's character on KL.
Thank God she realized that was a stupid name by the time the little girl was three, and instead called her Courtney thereafter. "Courtney" is a very dated name, but at least she doesn't sound like she was named for a trashy TV show character.

I’m currently watching season 10 and Greg and Abby have agreed to get married for career purposes. The only “reunion” I can see happening at this point, what with all the remaining actors being gargoyles, is maybe some filming at the actual cul de sac site, and then some interviews with them all. Ted S. looks like he died about 2 months ago and was never told.

I think there was a fear that Knots was going to be canceled in its second to last season so Van Ark grabbed a pilot; even tho it didn't get picked up the show wrote her out till the end.
I had heard, had she stayed, Val was supposed to go to the clinic where Laura died to research Greg's biography and she was going to find Laura there, alive.
That would have been great.

As a child, I enjoyed the Knots Landing reruns on TNT in 1991 and started watching the later seasons on CBS before it ended in 1993.
Around this time, my parents bought our first computer and it had a modem and we connected to the Prodigy service, which turned out to have a Knots Landing bulletin board. There were some really cool fans there and a co-producer on the show in those later years would come in and post and talk with us. Very nice guy and he can be seen in the series finale at the end, the new owner of the old Avery/Williams house.
Anyhow, he did a swell thing for some of us Prodigy fans and used our names in background/ADR (some were paged at airport, my name was muttered by a background player but you couldn't miss it). My parents thought I made it up because I had no friends. No, I was telling the truth and it happened as we were watching live on CBS.
"See?" said the little gayling with relish.

I joined AOL in college when I got my first computer in early 1996. I was in NYC and going to NYU. I had been a rabid Knots Landing fan and at the time, there were rumors going around about a reunion show or a TV movie. I had been going into some of the chat rooms on AOL and was perusing the list one night and I found a room called The Knots Room. So I went in, no one was talking, so I posted- Has anyone heard anything new about the reunion movie? No response.
About five or so minutes later, I get an IM from someone in the room. It was a photo. And you remember with dial up back then how long it would take for a photo to come through, so finally after 90 seconds, it starts to reveal itself and it was a nude middle-aged woman getting fucked by a dog. I was totally shocked and grossed out (and confused).
So I picked someone else in the room and IM'ed them and asked- Is this room about Knots Landing? And they answered- Nope. So I asked what it was about, and they said- Guess. I wrote back, I have no idea but some perv just sent me a photo of Mrs. Johnson screwing the family dog! He wrote back- BINGO! I still had no idea what "knots" meant so I asked him to explain.
Meanwhile, some guy came into the room and asked the same question I had about the Knots Landing reunion show. No answer. Finally, my helpful pal explained to me what "knots" meant in terms of dogs and fucking, and I was utterly horrified. So I im'ed the guy who had just come in and said- This room is NOT about Knots Landing. he asked me what it WAS about, and I told him, and the guy reported me!

I am currently watching season 3. Sid has died and Karen is reluctantly dating again. Lilimae joins the cast. Gary and Abby have their first kiss! Guest stars include Don Stroud, Jessica Walter, and Gary Ackroyd (the original Gary on one episode of Dallas). Ginger has sung one song thus far. Diana (DL fave Claudia Lonow) has frizzy hair and is into aerobics and jazzercise.

I know I'm in the minority, but my favorite seasons are 1 and 2. The way the show captured a feeling of community in those early seasons was really unique. I feel season 3 completely collapses without Don Murray's steady presence, and everyone seems isolated in their own little stories. Season 4 was highly entertaining, but it started going full-on soap, and that feeling of community began to fade.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | August 9, 2021 1:34 AM |
R114, I agree. I loved the first two seasons. Season 3 is clunky, with too many ridiculous episodes. Ginger and Kenny are totally underutilized. But, I must say, Gary is at peak hotness. Hot AF!

Larry Riley did 99 episodes of the show. He played Frank Williams. A the time he attributed his drastic weight loss to kidney problems. After he died, his wife revealed the kidney issues were the result of AIDS. He died in 1992 at 39.
With Lynne Moody who played his wife on Knots.

Donna, Joan, Kevin, and Ted all slummed in daytime after it ended, even though they all, aside from Kevin, got their start in soaps. That had to have been a come-down. Donna remained great friends with John Conboy.

If Laura can come back from the dead, then so can Linda Fairgate. After all, we never saw her throat slit, just her lying in a pool of blood. And then Karen can finally address her lesbian tendencies and attraction to Linda.

Laura was the most interesting of the all the female characters IMO. Richard/Laura marriage/relationship was really wonderfullyy complex, and they played that complexity for all it was worth. Constance and John Pleshette were probably the two best actors on the show in those early years.

No, Richard never beat Laura, but he became physical with Ciji when he walked in on what he thought was an intimate moment between Laura and Ciji. Richard was just an all-around loser, but Pleshette was so good in the role.

R135 Good on Julie Harris for keeping Lilimae's Texan accent throughout the show. It slipped a couple of times in the later episodes, but she kept it up and softened it appropriately as she became more Californian. Unlike Gary, who started to drop the accent after the first couple of episodes.

R138, Lillimae didn't have a Texas twang; she was supposed to be from Tennessee. However, Harris seemed to use a rounder Tidewater Virginia accent.
Harris' enunciation in reality was very refined and theatrical.

I love hearing about people watching for the first time or rewatching. Feel free to go on and on.
Season 3 is such a weird tonal shift. Even the color palette seems darker. I still think the haunted house episode is just a fever dream of Val's after seeing Gary and Abby take OIivia to Father's Night together. God, I loved that scene. 'I'm serving dessert!'
My favorite period of Knots is from the very end of S3 through the first six or so episodes of S4. There's something giddy about those eight or nine episodes where the show quickly retools, with oil fortunes falling from the sky and book launch parties and people buying restaurants and the mob and new boyfriends and lots of Gary-Abby sleaziness. I almost watch it like a miniseries.
MARY.

by Anonymous | reply 144 | August 9, 2021 4:30 AM |
I agree about the dark look of season 3 versus the sunnier tone of seasons 1-2. I thought I was the only one who noticed that. I find the first half of season 3 almost unwatchable, which is dominated by Karen trying to pull things together after Sid's death. It was all very dull and plodding, and it really suffered from not having a strong leading man with Don Murray's departure. Things picked up in the last half with Richard's breakdown and the start of the Gary/Abby affair. Ratings tanked that year. It was probably only spared cancellation because of Jacobs' clout with the network re Dallas and the fact that his Secrets of Midland Heights had failed to catch on that year. Season 4 was sort of a rebirth of the show, though I preferred the episodic format of the first three seasons rather than the serial format from Season 4 and on.

The first two seasons on DVD were not commercially successful, so WB will not be releasing any more. Season 1 did marginally, but season 2 totally tanked. Dallas and Dynasty DVDs were big sellers, thus probably why they got the reboots. Knots was just never as iconic a show as Dallas or Dynasty. As has been said many times, it was basically a P&G soap stuck in prime time.

Julie Harris stole the movie I sucked in! Critics raved about how she was the only shining light in the puddle of bong-water that was "The Dark Half."

The "I'm offended" generation will never know how good the openings from these shows were. Recently, David Jacobs, in the Cast Reunion a few months ago said that the foreign countries where Knots Landing was very huge were Germany and France. Even the French opening was pretty good. Very 80s.

I don’t think Doug Sheehan was hot. But he was boyishly handsome. I think the writers did a great job writing the Val/Ben relationship so it was believable that he was Val’s second great love after Gary. They, unfortunately, could not repeat this feat with the Danny Waleska fiasco.
by Anonymous | reply 216 | August 9, 2021 7:21 PM |
This is silly, but the thing I loved most about Knots Landing was their final scene never ended in a freeze frame like the other nighttime soaps.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | August 9, 2021 8:40 PM |
To me, the absolute best Knots Landing plot was when when Jill concocted her elaborate scheme to try and kill Val and make it look like a suicide. It was brilliant. She goes to San Francisco for a convention, picks up some dude, drugs him so he passes out in her hotel room, then drives to LA, forces Val to write a suicide note and swallow pills, then drives back to San Francisco in time to "wake up" next to the guy she picked up so she has an alibi.
And it all would've worked out perfectly if Mac hadn't seen Val through the window, passed out next to a pill bottle. He broke into her place and got her to the hospital in the nick of time!

[quote] the foreign countries where Knots Landing was very huge were Germany and France.
I wouldn't say that's true. Cannot speak for France. But in Germany, KL only aired in the afternoon on a daily schedule like a daily soap (in the late eighties and nineties.) Dallas was on its way out when KL started in Germany. Not many took notice. But hey, it was never cancelled; they aired every episode and re-ran them for years.
Michelle Lee actually said in an interview that the lack of international success is the reason why there probably would be no reboot of the show. She called the show a national success but nothing of the sort of Dallas or Dynasty which were huge worldwide. She may want a revival, but she's always been very aware that it's not gonna happen. William Devane's take was: There is no reboot because the reunion special was fucked up by people who didn't understand the show (his words!)

Gonna nitpick R218. It wasn't Mack who found Val after the forced overdose - it was Frank, her running partner, who had seen the twins playing on the front yard unsupervised and suspected something was wrong. When they told him Mommy was "asleep on the floor," Frank dashed upstairs to Val's bedroom and called for help.
Also, Jill flew back and forth between San Francisco and LA - she didn't drive! Her plan would never have worked with a 12 hour round/trip journey!
A LOT of discussion went on among the writers to make sure the plot was actually feasible.

Abby and Val should've scissored. You know they wanted to.

by Anonymous | reply 241 | August 10, 2021 3:34 PM |
R240 exactly. They never mention such a thing until someone challenges them and then suddenly they “worked on” the show or film as well, specifically that episode etc.
Look at that posters posting history. He never worked on that show, and has posts that imply he is a Millennial.
I guess he worked on the show since birth.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | August 10, 2021 3:35 PM |
R241 that wasn’t your first comment. If you worked on the show why didn’t you disclose this much earlier?
by Anonymous | reply 243 | August 10, 2021 3:36 PM |
R234, I'd love to hear about the planning that went into that particular storyline. I enjoyed 'Poor Val' more than the stolen babies and was surprised that, after a weak 1987-88 season, they came back with such a strong finale and momentum that lasted for most of the next season.

by Anonymous | reply 247 | August 10, 2021 3:45 PM |
R246 yes, I knew that too. Just like I knew that poster was lying. They’ve been commenting for a while, but not suddenly claim they worked on the show. Why not say that 100 comments ago?
And why does he claim to be a Millennial in some posts if he worked on the show? He was working on the show at 2 years old?
by Anonymous | reply 248 | August 10, 2021 3:46 PM |
Does anyone else remember when CBS tried to showcase reruns hosted by the cast? This was in the late summer of 1989. They ran a handful of 'newer' episodes (they were all from S9 and 10, so I'm guessing those hadn't gone into syndication yet?) and had little intros from various stars out of character. They appeared to be in a bunker surrounded by Knots Landing artifacts and video tapes. It looked like my bedroom in high school.
At any rate, they re-edited the last two episodes of S9 and showed them as one episode, without any of the Santa Tecla scenes. I think Lynne Moody and Larry Riley covered the intro for 'The Perfect Crime.'

by Anonymous | reply 251 | August 10, 2021 4:41 PM |
Actually, if you read that plot summary, it sounds like Jill both flew AND drove. She flew there, did what she came to do, but then the flights were grounded so she had to drive back. So both of the posters are correct and incorrect.

I remember when Val was put in the psych ward after her so-called suicide attempt. No one would believe her about Jill (anyone who'd seen Jill drunk should have at least considered it, shit) with the exception of her senile roommate Sheila, played by Billie Bird.
Val coming out of her coma only to see Jill standing there... God, that was good. And then Jill got shoved out of the hospital room by said dotty roommate.

by Anonymous | reply 255 | August 10, 2021 8:29 PM |
KL used a lot more popular music than the other nighttime soaps , because of Ciji/Cathy, and Anne/Mack later on. I wonder if that’s why it isn’t available.
by Anonymous | reply 256 | August 10, 2021 8:31 PM |

I hated Latham/Lechowick era. Their writing was very tongue-in-cheek, and it was if they were mocking some of the characters. I switched to LA Law at that point and rarely watched it again. The earlier seasons were played much more dead-seriously, even when the storylines started going over the top by S4 or S5.

Years ago my friend and I went to Crystalaire Place.
Before we got there, he put that Television’s Greatest Theme Songs CD into his car’s CD player, and cued up the Knots theme.
We pulled into “Laura’s” driveway, as the owner came out of the garage. He suddenly yelled at me, “HOW DARE YOU SLEEP WITH MY HUSBAND” and slapped me across the face. Before backing out and driving away.
The owner of the house looked confused. I was annoyed. My friend laughed.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | August 10, 2021 11:58 PM |
I hate the way the they always single out Karen, Abby, and Val as the central female characters. Laura was very important to the series too, and gave the show a unique voice. Yeah, okay, she didn't stick around for the entire run, but neither did Donna Mills, who only did a net of one additional season than McCashin. I think they tried to recapture Laura's wit/sardonic personality with Melinda Culeo's Paula, who probably came much cheaper than McCashin, but it just wasn't the same.

by Anonymous | reply 299 | August 11, 2021 1:29 AM |
Paul Carafotes (Harold) and Boyd Kestner (Alex) were the two hottest guys on the show for me. Too bad they didn't know how to use either one of them, though.
I enjoyed the later seasons a lot too, although the much maligned first half of Season 13 left a lot to be desired. However It wasn't all bad. Thankfully they turned things around for the second half.
Melinda Culea's Paula character was originally brought on to come between Mack and Karen, but viewers weren't having that and they eventually paired her up with Devane. She wasn't intended to be a Laura replacment. She wasn't particularly memorable, but there far worse actots and charaters than she was. Jean Hackney, Amanda Michaels, Joseph Barringer, Pierce Lawton, Benny Appleman and Vanessa Cunt, err Hunt were far worse. Thankfully most of them didn't last too long.

When Desperate Housewives started, I hoped in my heart that I would find the neighborhood atmosphere I loved so much in the first three seasons of Knots Landing. You know, the cul-de-sac mood... R304 I think Jill was supposed to be just a tease for an affair for Mack, but untimately would't happen. Jill was originally intended to be a short term character, but Teri Austin impressed TPTB so they kept her on. Then they seen the chemistry between her Shackleford and paired them up. They were lovers in real life for a few years also.
I think the Mack and Paula affair was supposed to happen, or Karen at least thought it happened, to break them up for a bit.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | August 11, 2021 1:46 AM |
Always interesting when a character is created with the intention of a short story arc or just a one season character but they end up popular with viewers or with producers so they’re kept around.
Ciji was supposed to be a one season character who is killed at the end of her debut season but she became so popular they kept her around longer. Devane's character was supposed to have an 8 episode arc then be gone but he became so popular he ended up on for 9 seasons, etc.

John Pleshette claimed in an interview that he was the one who had the idea for Knots Landing Motors. He told the producers that the characters needed a place other than the homes and cul-de-sac to interact, so David Jacobs incorporated his idea. Looking back, that was never a place where the characters inter-mingled. I think the creation of the Daniel restaurant in S4 was a much better vehicle to have the characters interact. Too bad they dropped it at the end of the season.

KL is nowhere. And no, they were never as big as the other two anywhere in the world. Michelle Lee says that they had “good” ratings but nothing compared to the other two and hardly anyone would speak about their show because everything was about Dallas and Dynasty. KL was secondary to those two. One of the creators said KL “struggled” for a long time because they were always overshadowed by the other two.

Now that the streaming industry is starting to consolidate, I am hoping that services shift their effort away from gaining customers to keeping them. What other show type is better suited for that effort than a serialized soap? Here is to a new dawn of weekly soaps. (I refuse to call 2017 Dynasty a worthy soap, or even a TV show)
by Anonymous | reply 364 | August 11, 2021 1:20 PM |
I think KL never did well in syndication/reruns. No reason to stream it if it’s not going to be profitable. But if they know it’s not profitable, they shouldn’t enforce their copyright so aggressively either. Just let it be “abandonware.”

Warner Bros. owned Lorimar at one point so maybe KL will run on HBO Max. If not there perhaps Paramount+ since it was a CBS show.

The final verdict: KL is not streaming anywhere, Dallas is free on IMDB, The Colbys is free on YouTube (search for it, duh), Dynasty is not streaming anywhere, and Falcon Crest is not streaming anywhere.

Obviously there are no plans to reboot Knots. If WB was even scoping out a reboot, they would've made old episodes available somewhere, even on a pay per view basis, to get attention and an audience for a reboot.

If you rewatch the early Dallas episodes where they discuss and introduce Gary...through the eyes of today. It really seems like it would be leading to Gary coming out of the closet...instead of moving to Southern California with his hillbilly wife.

All 14 seasons of Knots are on youtube but unlisted, but are currently set to private by the uploader. You can only access them in their playlist. They do this fairly often, unfortuately. I think they do this to keep them from being removed by copyright claims. I need to get a new external harddrive and download them all the next time they're unlocked.
by Anonymous | reply 388 | August 12, 2021 4:53 AM |

R389 They might have just set to private where only the uploader can see them. I'm guessing they found out it was linked somewhere and set it to private. They've done this several times before. They also renamed the account, so it could be back at some point. Check back a few times a week and they might have them viewable again.

R392 lol. The look of the original series starts getting more washed out in season 8 as the actresses demanded Vaseline on the camera lens.

By season 5, Donna Mills looked like someone doing a poor drag impersonation of her.
by Anonymous | reply 394 | August 12, 2021 3:06 PM |
David Jacobs said that Diana Fairgate was the most hated character on the show by viewers. Not love to hate, like Abby, JR, etc, pure hatred because she was so damn annoying. She was really miscast. Unlike Pat Petersen and Steve Shaw, she did not look like she was swimming in the same genetic pool as Michele Lee, Don Murray, or Donna Mills.
by Anonymous | reply 395 | August 12, 2021 5:00 PM |
Diana was very annoying, especially in seasons 4 and 5. I think they realized it was a mistake making her a main cast member. After the Chip storyline ended, mid-season 5, she wasn't seen very much, before being totally written out early in season 6.
Though to be fair, Knots real weakness was intigrating the younger cast into storylines once they grew up. The same thing happened with Michael, Eric, Olivia, and Julie.

Constance always killed on Pyramid. I can't see Michele or Joan pulling that off, though I love them dearly.
Quick note about Season 4: Ginger really hit her stride as a character that season, with Kim Lankford playing her as constantly irritable and near murder and full of eye rolls and smirks. Ginger's just done.

One of the biggest mistakes [ital]Knots made was writing out Olivia. She was groomed to be the new Abby, including being married to that lunkhead beefcake. On another thread they are talking about Jennifer Lawrence is playing agent Sue Mengers, whose first real break as an agent was when the then primarily stage focused Julie Harris signed with her because she wanted to do an episode of Bonanza, and more tv... Mengers arranged it and the producers had a special script commissioned. So...without her we might never have gotten Lilimae.

[quote] One of the biggest mistakes Knots made was writing out Olivia.
I feel the opposite. To me they should have written her out along with Abby. I never cared for the character. I don't think she had (m)any redeeming qualities, so I could have loved to hate her. She was always unreasonable and confrontational for no reason. She was basically whining all day about her evil mother or inconsiderate boyfriend or whatever else rubbed her the wrong way. Urgh... When she was fighting Abby, I always rooted for Abby. The other aspect is that the actress was not strong enough to convey a multi facetted character that could carry her own stories. Not her fault. Like any other child actor, they were hired for their cuteness, not for their acting chops. But bottom line: When she left it wasn't too soon for me.

Remember when JR Ewing’s shooter Kristen Shepard came to KL and Ginger walked in on her and her husband Kenny having sex? It was implied that Kristen was giving him a blow job.
Remember Gary grieving over his brother Bobby Ewing’s “death”? Great acting by Ted Shackelford. Interesting that they never acknowledge he was actually alive.

It's funny, I thought Stacy Galina was more interesting in her two episodes as Mary Frances than in her three seasons as Kate. She at least had a little fire as Mary Frances and such a bore as Kate. I hated that they used her so much (along with Brian Austin Green) in the 1997 mini series.

My assumption was that Gary's affair with Abby, the separation and divorce, Val's book and tabloid publication of her life with Gary, etc. all caused a massive estrangement between the three somewhere in the middle of S4. At the beginning of S5, Val confides to Karen that she hasn't heard from Lucy in months and months.
Maybe Lucy just got sick of their Gary and Val shit.

Abby should have manipulated Gary into adopting Olivia and Brian, to ensure they received a Ewing inheritance. It also would have given them both a reason to stick around after Abby left.
I loved how Olivia had Abby’s number , even as a child. Olivia and Val’s relationship was interesting-Olivia resented Abby for keeping her away from Val.

Valene gets called “the little engine that could” by Karen, but it’s just as apt a description for Laura, who truly transformed with her successful real estate career and started putting her foot down with Richard on occasion.

I was joking about Crowe; I doubt she's still in touch with those ladies. I assumed it was some random middle-aged suburban fan frau.
I last saw Sean Young in a decent indie horror movie called Darling (2016) and she looked very matronly (which was also the role) but not especially fat. I linked a pic if it works.

Felicity was the loony nanny in that dreadful [italic]Titanic[/italic] miniseries with Catherine Zeta Jones and Marilu Henner. She overreacted horrifically. It’s still on YouTube.

Really r489? I’m not one of them. I thought that it was terrible. Henner should have been waterboarded for her inept and hammy portrayal of Molly Brown. And Waterman was equally craptacular. Then the ship sinks she lets loose this feral wail as she holds the baby of the family she works for. Her acting throughout was ghastly.

Rumor has long been that Donna Mills is a lesbian. A friend of mine (yes, I know) ran into her at an LGBTQ fundraiser back when Knots was still on the air, and she she was there with a female companion with whom she was clearly intimate.
Personally, couldn't care less one way or the other. At least she was her then-cache to support gay rights.

Imagine how different the show would have been with Penny Marshall cast as Laura Avery.
This was never a thing, was never going to happen, but yet I wonder.
Sort of like if Elder Lucille Ball has been cast as Lilimae Clements. Gary and Val's house would have reeked of cigarettes and there would have been a subplot about Momma having to go smoke out back and her growly-voiced resentment of her dim bulb daughter and that jellyfish husband of hers.

Tonya was a very good child actress but somewhere around her promotion to ingenue in 1985-86, her performance became super whiny and unfortunately mannered. It was like she started taking acting lessons and ruined herself.
I wasn't sad to see her go in 1990. They sort of tried to make her more Abby-like, but she played it at sitcom level and just didn't have the chops. Lar Park Lincoln was doing the NuAbby thing much better. Tonya's dramatic work was sitcom-level. God, I hated Harold and Olivia's poverty storylines/bits.
In the early years of Knots, I assumed Brian Cunningham was slow, like Carrie Ingalls. When the Notorious BAG took over the part in 1986, Brian was suddenly articulate, outgoing, lively, etc. Before that, he was kind of a slug and had about three lines each season. Even the legion of Jason Averys got more to do.

What was Constance thinking with that mullet in season 4? She was thin to begin with, but after she lost the baby weight, she was scary thin for a while, and that hairdo just accentuated her sunken facial features. I always considered Knots Landing, the older version of 90210, with similar characters and friendships and bonding mixed with the obligatory soapy theatrics and social issue stories
Melrose Place was way too over the top, campy and mean spirited tonally compared to Knots or 90210

R569 Kenny and Ginger were supposed to be the young, newly married couple. You could always tell they were afterthoughts to the show runners/writers though. It was pretty telling that they didn't appear after the pilot episode until episode 4. Ginger did get some decent character development though overall. You got some of backstory and could understand her motovations. Kenny was pretty one demensional though. Both were disposable though, and their departure was no loss really.

Poor Tonya Crowe. The only season she was elevated to the opening credits was the season they went without cast shots, and instead used that stupid sand castle. They probably did that so that viewers wouldn't be reminded that Donna Mills had just left, but still it was stupid. However, this is the worst of their opening credits IMO. So fucking pretentious. And Connie's pivot is the worst pivot in the history of opening theme pivots.

Agreed, R594. That pretentious, faux-Leroy Neiman painting with the oh-so-precious artsy black and white head shots in dramatic turns was incredibly cringe-worthy. Favorite all time was the floating boxes (season 4-8?), then the cast shots inside the cul-de-sac (seasons 1-3?), then the sandcastle. They also did kind remake of the floating boxes later on with very 90s color frames... meh.

Granted, Constance's head twirl was no Susan Sullivan on Falcon Crest, but I wasn't expecting to see her at all once news of her exit came out.
If they had gone to Connie and said, 'here's what we're paying Samantha Sollers and her husband and daughter; we can pay you that much.' She might have stayed.
I heard a rumor that if JVA had stayed for that last season, Val would write Greg's memoir; she was going to go to the hospital where Laura went to die and FIND HER THERE.
Remember they lost her body after she 'died.'
