“Knots Landing” stars want a reunion show to happen

Where would they even air a new reunion series? The original series isn’t on streaming anywhere.

Although it would be interesting to catch up with the people of that scandalous town.

Joan Van Ark looks worse than Kurt Cobain's corpse.

I hope they film her parts in a blacked-out room.

by Anonymousreply 1August 8, 2021 4:01 AM

Seriously, though, has Donna Mills's face actually moved in 34 years? I mean, apart from when making room for the botox cement and steel girder trucks to back up to her face..??

by Anonymousreply 2August 8, 2021 4:03 AM

Ha r1! I was just thinking…too bad they can’t get Joan’s original face to reunite with her!

by Anonymousreply 3August 8, 2021 4:04 AM

R3 How about a show featuring only the hideous plastic surgery failures sitting together on a couch telling each other how normal they still look? They could show little interview segments off to the side where friends and relatives discuss what these women used to look like, and all the work they used to get before they went to Guatemala for a cheap face-lift.

We could call it "Hack Job!"

by Anonymousreply 4August 8, 2021 4:07 AM

I used to have such a crush on Ted Shackelford. Sad to see what he looks like now, but at least he aged gracefully

Was Falcon Crest the one with Ronnie Reagan's first wife?

by Anonymousreply 6August 8, 2021 4:30 AM

Sadly, the only was for this to work now, they would have to explain why Val looks like monster. But, shit Gary was a Ewing certainly he could've bought her better plastic surgery than that...even JR wouldn't have done that to her.

by Anonymousreply 7August 8, 2021 4:35 AM

The original show was terrific but they are too old now. This is a terrible idea.

by Anonymousreply 8August 8, 2021 4:37 AM

DAAAMN r1! LOL!!!

by Anonymousreply 9August 8, 2021 4:39 AM

Joan's bad plastic surgery would the elephant in the room

No way to have this much-wanted reunion show without addressing it

Maybe she had to go into Witness Protection and the government forced her to use a bad surgeon

Maybe she was in Nexvm-type cult where the leader forced her to have bad procedures

I just want to hear Lilimae's ethereal image say to Val, "Child, what have you done to yourself?"

by Anonymousreply 10August 8, 2021 4:40 AM

They could pretend Val has crossed into another dimension

and show her only as an animation character with Joan do the voice-over

by Anonymousreply 11August 8, 2021 4:42 AM

Gary was hot bad in the day

Too bad he looks a Mormon funeral home director now

by Anonymousreply 12August 8, 2021 4:43 AM

Gary was fine as fuck.

r6 yes, Jane Wyman.

by Anonymousreply 15August 8, 2021 5:14 AM

Michelle Lee doesn't look good but of the three she is the least hideously disfigured lol

by Anonymousreply 16August 8, 2021 5:16 AM

Joan Van Ark is returning to THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS as Gloria this fall.

by Anonymousreply 17August 8, 2021 5:18 AM

Michael Fairgate needs to be gay.

by Anonymousreply 18August 8, 2021 5:19 AM

I'M AVAILABLE!!

by Anonymousreply 19August 8, 2021 5:25 AM

Joan van Ark's plastic surgery is awful, but she would look much better with different makeup. She needs a darker lipstick, and less black around her eyes.

by Anonymousreply 20August 8, 2021 5:27 AM

Knot's Landing was the nighttime soap most like a daytime soap and is probably why it outlasted all the others. But I'm not sure if it was showy enough to warrant a reboot or some kind of follow up movie this far away from the original run.

Question, was Knot's Landing a suburb of Los Angeles?

by Anonymousreply 21August 8, 2021 5:32 AM
Michelle Lee doesn't look good but of the three she is the least hideously disfigured lol

She’s almost 80. Donna Mills is 80. Ted Shackleford is younger than the ladies (75).

by Anonymousreply 22August 8, 2021 5:39 AM

Do it as an audio drama. Problem solved.

by Anonymousreply 23August 8, 2021 5:44 AM

by Anonymousreply 34August 8, 2021 6:35 AM

R20, changing Joan Van Arc‘s makeup is about as pointless as shuffling lounge chairs around on the deck of the Titanic, dear.

by Anonymousreply 35August 8, 2021 6:35 AM

I loved the show, but yeah, it's too late to a reunion at this point. Maybe 5-10 years ago and only if David Jacobs was heavily involved.

The Back the Cul De Sac reunion mini series they did in 1997 sucked because the person they had do it had no idea of the history of the show.

by Anonymousreply 36August 8, 2021 6:40 AM

I can't fathom why they go to the trouble of a reunion and then hire a sucky writer. I heard David Jacobs offered to consult on the Dallas revival but they passed.

Unreal.

There were some good moments in the revival but overall, it was done by people who didn't know the show.

by Anonymousreply 37August 8, 2021 6:46 AM

Maybe they could cross it over with that Munsters revival I've heard about and have Val and Gary as reanimated corpses. Alec Baldwin could appear as Joshua's ghost!

by Anonymousreply 38August 8, 2021 7:00 AM

R37 the Dallas revival season 1 was great.

by Anonymousreply 39August 8, 2021 9:20 AM

Why the terrible plastic surgery? The old bats have been around on tv since the early 70's, it isn't as if anyone is gonna think they are young starlets.

by Anonymousreply 40August 8, 2021 10:34 AM

Joan Van Ark could be my sister.

by Anonymousreply 41August 8, 2021 11:29 AM

It’s not that she had bad plastic surgery, it’s that she’s had so much plastic surgery! She’s been getting work done since the 80s! 30 years of face lifts and fillers etc. will start to look bad on some faces.

by Anonymousreply 42August 8, 2021 11:57 AM

I loved Knots Landing so much. I missed that time so bad.

by Anonymousreply 43August 8, 2021 12:06 PM

I think she started fucking with her nose around 1984. There's a big change in Val's face between S5 and S6. I think something similar happened in 1987, because her face changed considerably around that time, too.

I'm guessing Michele had a face lift around 1986.

by Anonymousreply 44August 8, 2021 12:08 PM

R20 What is up with that lipstick color, anyway? It makes her look like she's not getting enough oxygen.

by Anonymousreply 45August 8, 2021 12:10 PM
"Child, what have you done to yourself?"

"Sweetpea, what have you done to yourself?"

by Anonymousreply 46August 8, 2021 12:12 PM

I tend to believe that yes, Joan's face is damaged beyond belief forever more, however, different make-up COULD help her look better... different lipstick color, different eye make-up, hairstyle and so on....

by Anonymousreply 47August 8, 2021 12:14 PM

I think Michele and Donna look great. For God's sake, they're octogenarians now - they could be someone's great grandmothers! How many great grandmas do you know who look that good?

by Anonymousreply 48August 8, 2021 12:16 PM

Donna is stunning

by Anonymousreply 49August 8, 2021 12:27 PM

Considering the state of Joan's face, it will have to be a Halloween special.

by Anonymousreply 50August 8, 2021 12:35 PM

The 1997 reunion was so bad that I forget it exists.

According to Ann Marcus, David Jacobs and Michael Filerman weren't very interested in making the reunion. They wanted Ann to write a script where a Sid Fairgate look-alike would have returned, posing as Sid, to break up Mack and Karen. Shudder. Don Murray, Michele Lee, and Kevin Dobson would have been unbearable in that triangle and over two nights? Forget it.

by Anonymousreply 51August 8, 2021 12:38 PM

I would have liked a fake Sid. I love Karen

by Anonymousreply 52August 8, 2021 12:40 PM

Van Ark just needs darker make up... she makes this odd choice to wash herself out with light colours that emphasize the work. Why paint your lips paler than your skin tone?

by Anonymousreply 53August 8, 2021 12:42 PM

I love Karen, too, but I worry the guys would have hogged all the air in the room in that triangle.

My favorite Karen moment in the series was when she locked herself in the trunk of a Jaguar to solve a crime and exonerate another lead character. The way Karen so gamely hops into the trunk and closes it, crying out that she did it in a gleeful voice, is priceless.

by Anonymousreply 54August 8, 2021 12:45 PM

I’m glad some posters mentioned that Joan started messing with her face decades ago. I remember then how dramatically different she started looking. This link isn’t the greatest evidence of this, but it’s the best I could find looking quickly.

by Anonymousreply 55August 8, 2021 1:15 PM

Of course they want a reunion. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and so many others couldn't resist working. But it will never happen for the Knots crew. Takes money and there is just not enough interest. The execs would want the story to focus on the younger generation...and not even Karen's kids, but Karen's grandkids: the 25 to 30 year olds. And we don't know the grandkids. The children were dull enough, but the grandchildren would be like launching a whole new show. So, the true potential viewers would see the core cast only 20% of the time, the rest on new people.

Also, the show started with Knots as a middle class enclave but everyone gradually got rich as the 1980s went on and the interiors of their homes did not meet the modest exteriors. I don't know if new viewers would understand rich people living in small ranch homes with neighbors so close. Audiences have been so trained today that houses define a character. And the show just cannot work away from the cul de sac.

Also, as OP said, Knots is not streaming, so no new fan base or older fans up on the intricacies. I would however watch an intelligently done cast reunion, with a good host who knew his or her Knots history.

by Anonymousreply 56August 8, 2021 1:36 PM

I heard that Joan is in talks as host of a series they're rebooting. Tales from the Cryptkeeper.

by Anonymousreply 57August 8, 2021 1:46 PM

What is it about those nose jobs that age so horribly? They're so extreme that as a woman's face ages. the tiny boneless noses have no support and seem to crumble into their faces. Joan's and Michelle's noses have the same issues that the aged Ann Miller's and Nanette Fabray's did.

by Anonymousreply 58August 8, 2021 1:49 PM

I'm sorry but this is all very upsetting to me. I hope the cul-de-sac has faired better than it's inhabitants.

by Anonymousreply 59August 8, 2021 1:52 PM

R21, Knot's Landing was supposed to be near the ocean, i.e., one of the LA beach suburbs like Palos Verdes. The actual cul-de-sac filmed for the opening credits was in Granada Hills which is nowhere near the beach.

by Anonymousreply 60August 8, 2021 1:55 PM

Wasn’t Gary Ewing rich? He just decided to separate from his family and try and be his own man in a middle class suburb, but in reality I’m sure he had a trust he could fall back on if he needed to.

by Anonymousreply 61August 8, 2021 2:42 PM

The 1997 reunion sucked because they couldn’t get Nicolette Sheridan to do it.

With California property values where they are right now, having millionaires living in ranch homes (which are now probably worth over $1 million) does make sense, but…

What doesn’t make sense is a group of neighbors being this friendly in 2021. Who the hell hangs out with their neighbors like Val, Karen and Laura did today? It made sense when more women stayed at home, but now?

As someone mentioned above, the principal actors are too old or dead. The actors that played their children are in their 50s, and the only two of those actors with name recognition in 2021 are Nicolette Sheridan and Brian Austin Green. I don’t see anyone greenlighting a show with those two as the big draw.

This is the wishful thinking of three old bags, who haven’t realized that life passed them by on Wilshire, as they were driving to the plastic surgeon for another tuneup.

by Anonymousreply 64August 8, 2021 3:10 PM

R64 Yeah but look at Desperate Housewives, they are hanging out with their neighbors

by Anonymousreply 65August 8, 2021 3:46 PM

Can it be true that Ms. Joan Van Ark might grace my screen once again?? Give her the Emmy!

by Anonymousreply 66August 8, 2021 3:53 PM

Have any of you even watched the clip that OP put up (and completely mislabled)? No one is saying they want a KL reunion show or reboot or anything of the sort to happen, they're just saying they would love to find something for the three of them to do together.

by Anonymousreply 67August 8, 2021 3:55 PM
What doesn’t make sense is a group of neighbors being this friendly in 2021. Who the hell hangs out with their neighbors like Val, Karen and Laura did today?

When was the last time you were in the suburbs? Oh they all hate each other and envy each other and try to outdo each other, but they still congregate. They usually come together via the children who go to school together and they develop relationships that way. If the children don't bring them together, it's usually the hatred for either a neighbor (usually a woman) or a particular house that they can't stand which unites them.

In these threads I always expect Constance McCashin to show up. Where are you Connie?

by Anonymousreply 77August 8, 2021 5:58 PM

Because Laura Avery Sumner was everything in Knots Landing! R77

by Anonymousreply 78August 8, 2021 6:00 PM

Laura, as an outsider with acerbic wit who never quite fit into the main group, was someone I identified with as a gay teenager.

She was always sort of isolated, even within the claustrophobia of the cul-de-sac.

Laura wasn't as melodramatic as Karen and Val or as sexed up as Abby.

by Anonymousreply 79August 8, 2021 6:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 81August 8, 2021 6:23 PM

Joan Van Ark doesn’t have a face left.

by Anonymousreply 82August 8, 2021 6:35 PM

And to think I would have fucked Michele Phillips back in the 80s if she had asked. Although I'm really gay, I would have gone bi for her. So pretty and sexy.

by Anonymousreply 83August 8, 2021 6:39 PM

R61 Gary wasn’t independently wealthy until Jock died. Before then, Miss. Ellie bought ALL the cul de sac houses (go big or go home) one of which was for Gary & Val to start anew after years of being terrorized by JR. (This detail was never brought up again…I mean are we supposed to believe everyone else in the cul de sac was renting from a Ewing Oil subsidiary?) But as far as Gary, don’t forget JR hired a bunch of good ole boys to literally steal infant Lucy away from dirt poor teenage Valene and deliver her to Jock and Miss. Ellie. Anyway, Gary and Val were game and Gary got a job selling cars for Sid. Lucy tried to give it a chance with Gary and Valene, but please: Lucy was way too spoiled for boring middle class Knots Landing. Damn, these plot points are giving me chills!

by Anonymousreply 84August 8, 2021 7:33 PM

My cousin in Idaho named her daughter "Courtney Grace" so she could call her "Ciji" after Lisa Hartman's character on KL.

Thank God she realized that was a stupid name by the time the little girl was three, and instead called her Courtney thereafter. "Courtney" is a very dated name, but at least she doesn't sound like she was named for a trashy TV show character.

by Anonymousreply 85August 8, 2021 7:38 PM

Laura became an interesting character once John Pleshette left as her husband.

by Anonymousreply 86August 8, 2021 7:39 PM

R90 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That must have been a joke.

by Anonymousreply 91August 8, 2021 8:53 PM

Maybe they could set the new version in a retirement home--Val would be in memory care, which might explain her strange appearance. She would constantly be shrieking "MY BABIES! MY BABIES!" at the nurses who would have no idea what she was carrying on about.

by Anonymousreply 92August 8, 2021 9:10 PM

I’m currently watching season 10 and Greg and Abby have agreed to get married for career purposes. The only “reunion” I can see happening at this point, what with all the remaining actors being gargoyles, is maybe some filming at the actual cul de sac site, and then some interviews with them all. Ted S. looks like he died about 2 months ago and was never told.

by Anonymousreply 93August 8, 2021 9:35 PM

I never watched the show, I just wanted to see who the wax figure in the thumbnail is. Yikes.

by Anonymousreply 94August 8, 2021 10:00 PM

I think there was a fear that Knots was going to be canceled in its second to last season so Van Ark grabbed a pilot; even tho it didn't get picked up the show wrote her out till the end.

I had heard, had she stayed, Val was supposed to go to the clinic where Laura died to research Greg's biography and she was going to find Laura there, alive.

That would have been great.

by Anonymousreply 95August 8, 2021 10:55 PM

As a child, I enjoyed the Knots Landing reruns on TNT in 1991 and started watching the later seasons on CBS before it ended in 1993.

Around this time, my parents bought our first computer and it had a modem and we connected to the Prodigy service, which turned out to have a Knots Landing bulletin board. There were some really cool fans there and a co-producer on the show in those later years would come in and post and talk with us. Very nice guy and he can be seen in the series finale at the end, the new owner of the old Avery/Williams house.

Anyhow, he did a swell thing for some of us Prodigy fans and used our names in background/ADR (some were paged at airport, my name was muttered by a background player but you couldn't miss it). My parents thought I made it up because I had no friends. No, I was telling the truth and it happened as we were watching live on CBS.

"See?" said the little gayling with relish.

by Anonymousreply 96August 8, 2021 11:29 PM

I joined AOL in college when I got my first computer in early 1996. I was in NYC and going to NYU. I had been a rabid Knots Landing fan and at the time, there were rumors going around about a reunion show or a TV movie. I had been going into some of the chat rooms on AOL and was perusing the list one night and I found a room called The Knots Room. So I went in, no one was talking, so I posted- Has anyone heard anything new about the reunion movie? No response.

About five or so minutes later, I get an IM from someone in the room. It was a photo. And you remember with dial up back then how long it would take for a photo to come through, so finally after 90 seconds, it starts to reveal itself and it was a nude middle-aged woman getting fucked by a dog. I was totally shocked and grossed out (and confused).

So I picked someone else in the room and IM'ed them and asked- Is this room about Knots Landing? And they answered- Nope. So I asked what it was about, and they said- Guess. I wrote back, I have no idea but some perv just sent me a photo of Mrs. Johnson screwing the family dog! He wrote back- BINGO! I still had no idea what "knots" meant so I asked him to explain.

Meanwhile, some guy came into the room and asked the same question I had about the Knots Landing reunion show. No answer. Finally, my helpful pal explained to me what "knots" meant in terms of dogs and fucking, and I was utterly horrified. So I im'ed the guy who had just come in and said- This room is NOT about Knots Landing. he asked me what it WAS about, and I told him, and the guy reported me!

by Anonymousreply 97August 9, 2021 12:11 AM

R4 "How about a show featuring only the hideous plastic surgery failures sitting together on a couch telling each other how normal they still look?"

Joan van Ark and Donna Mills already did that part - with HOTEL's Shari Belafonte and DALLAS's Deborah Shelton in an episode of NIP/TUCK (S5E12).

R97, I'm dying, I'm dying, murder! Loved your story.

by Anonymousreply 100August 9, 2021 12:53 AM

Considering how old Knots Landing is (premiering 42 years ago) it's astounding that the vast majority of the cast is still alive. For instance, Dallas premiered only one year earlier but four of the main players (Jock, Ellie, Cliff, and JR) are dead. The only main actor of Knots that leaps to mind as being decreased is Julie Harris. Am I forgetting someone?

by Anonymousreply 101August 9, 2021 12:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 102August 9, 2021 12:55 AM

Kevin Dobson is dead, and Steve Shaw (Eric Fairgate) died in a car accident while the show was still on. But yeah, amazingly, all the original actors and just about all of the major players are still alive.

by Anonymousreply 104August 9, 2021 12:57 AM

Lisa Hartman. Lisa Hartman.

by Anonymousreply 105August 9, 2021 12:59 AM

Ted Shackelford drove me wild with lust when I was a teen gayling. I used to fantasize that I was their Latina housekeeper and that Gary would mount me on the kitchen counter. THIS was pure masculine beauty. Can you just imagine the whiff if musk and testosterone while he was working out? Yum.

Guest stars include Don Stroud, Jessica Walter, and Gary Ackroyd (the original Gary on one episode of Dallas). Ginger has sung one song thus far. Diana (DL fave Claudia Lonow) has frizzy hair and is into aerobics and jazzercise.

by Anonymousreply 110August 9, 2021 1:10 AM

R101 Mack. Kevin Dobson started later than Julie Harris but he was a main player.

And Kevin just died in the last year, so the cast really did stay alive and healthy for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 112August 9, 2021 1:23 AM

RIP Julie Harris. I wish I could have met her and say and chatted about James Dean.

by Anonymousreply 113August 9, 2021 1:25 AM

I know I'm in the minority, but my favorite seasons are 1 and 2. The way the show captured a feeling of community in those early seasons was really unique. I feel season 3 completely collapses without Don Murray's steady presence, and everyone seems isolated in their own little stories. Season 4 was highly entertaining, but it started going full-on soap, and that feeling of community began to fade.

by Anonymousreply 114August 9, 2021 1:34 AM

R114, I agree. I loved the first two seasons. Season 3 is clunky, with too many ridiculous episodes. Ginger and Kenny are totally underutilized. But, I must say, Gary is at peak hotness. Hot AF!

by Anonymousreply 115August 9, 2021 1:57 AM

Larry Riley did 99 episodes of the show. He played Frank Williams. A the time he attributed his drastic weight loss to kidney problems. After he died, his wife revealed the kidney issues were the result of AIDS. He died in 1992 at 39.

With Lynne Moody who played his wife on Knots.

Whaddabout William Devane?

by Anonymousreply 118August 9, 2021 2:59 AM

Was Larry Riley bi? Wasn't he on the daytime soap The Doctors? A lot of the male actors on that show were gay and contracted AIDS.

it's all in the writing so ....get a good writer (duh)

These women know their characters so well, it could work...

I wonder what that's like, having something SO HUGE and then...you're not working; not so much the financial realities but not having that weekly star thing going on.

by Anonymousreply 123August 9, 2021 3:29 AM

Donna, Joan, Kevin, and Ted all slummed in daytime after it ended, even though they all, aside from Kevin, got their start in soaps. That had to have been a come-down. Donna remained great friends with John Conboy.

by Anonymousreply 124August 9, 2021 3:33 AM

Donna, Michele, and Joan were on the same Nip/Tuck episode. Remember? Nip/Tuck is on hulu!
We never saw Laura die. She'll reappear on the reboot...back from the "dead".

If Laura can come back from the dead, then so can Linda Fairgate. After all, we never saw her throat slit, just her lying in a pool of blood. And then Karen can finally address her lesbian tendencies and attraction to Linda.

by Anonymousreply 126August 9, 2021 3:39 AM

OMG, Linda Fairgate! Total blast from the past!

by Anonymousreply 127August 9, 2021 3:43 AM

They did Linda dirty :( She was a rare highlight in the later seasons.

by Anonymousreply 128August 9, 2021 3:48 AM

R117, if he had been on GL, I would have fired him. We needed Frank Williams to be a strong, virile man.

by Anonymousreply 129August 9, 2021 3:48 AM

Laura was the most interesting of the all the female characters IMO. Richard/Laura marriage/relationship was really wonderfullyy complex, and they played that complexity for all it was worth. Constance and John Pleshette were probably the two best actors on the show in those early years.

by Anonymousreply 130August 9, 2021 3:49 AM

I can't remember, was Richard beating Laura?

by Anonymousreply 131August 9, 2021 3:50 AM

R131, not in seasons 1, 2, or 3. Maybe in season 4? Season 4 is when Ciji shows up!

R135 Good on Julie Harris for keeping Lilimae's Texan accent throughout the show. It slipped a couple of times in the later episodes, but she kept it up and softened it appropriately as she became more Californian. Unlike Gary, who started to drop the accent after the first couple of episodes.

by Anonymousreply 138August 9, 2021 4:11 AM

Why did JR hate Gary and Val so much?

by Anonymousreply 139August 9, 2021 4:13 AM

R133, most guys dream of big dicks; me? I'd love a big hot sexy chest to lay my head upon.

No wonder Gary and Val and Ciji and Cathy and Pat and what's her name's friend and Kate all wanted Gary.

by Anonymousreply 140August 9, 2021 4:14 AM

Ted is rumored to have an exceptionally large endowment. There was talk here years ago about his fabled "third leg."

by Anonymousreply 141August 9, 2021 4:16 AM

R138, Lillimae didn't have a Texas twang; she was supposed to be from Tennessee. However, Harris seemed to use a rounder Tidewater Virginia accent.

Harris' enunciation in reality was very refined and theatrical.

by Anonymousreply 142August 9, 2021 4:21 AM

I love hearing about people watching for the first time or rewatching. Feel free to go on and on.

Season 3 is such a weird tonal shift. Even the color palette seems darker. I still think the haunted house episode is just a fever dream of Val's after seeing Gary and Abby take OIivia to Father's Night together. God, I loved that scene. 'I'm serving dessert!'

My favorite period of Knots is from the very end of S3 through the first six or so episodes of S4. There's something giddy about those eight or nine episodes where the show quickly retools, with oil fortunes falling from the sky and book launch parties and people buying restaurants and the mob and new boyfriends and lots of Gary-Abby sleaziness. I almost watch it like a miniseries.

MARY.

by Anonymousreply 143August 9, 2021 4:22 AM

These Grannies can't even get their original show on DVD....

by Anonymousreply 144August 9, 2021 4:30 AM

I agree about the dark look of season 3 versus the sunnier tone of seasons 1-2. I thought I was the only one who noticed that. I find the first half of season 3 almost unwatchable, which is dominated by Karen trying to pull things together after Sid's death. It was all very dull and plodding, and it really suffered from not having a strong leading man with Don Murray's departure. Things picked up in the last half with Richard's breakdown and the start of the Gary/Abby affair. Ratings tanked that year. It was probably only spared cancellation because of Jacobs' clout with the network re Dallas and the fact that his Secrets of Midland Heights had failed to catch on that year. Season 4 was sort of a rebirth of the show, though I preferred the episodic format of the first three seasons rather than the serial format from Season 4 and on.

by Anonymousreply 145August 9, 2021 4:33 AM

I'd love to see a show that had their glamorous characters confronting the actual problems of real octogenarian women.

by Anonymousreply 146August 9, 2021 4:54 AM

I was once pulling into the parking lot of Bristol Farms in Beverly Hills. My lights flashed on this creature coming towards me and I was like....what is that? Just some strange looking type of human I'd never seen before.

It was Joan Van Ark.

by Anonymousreply 147August 9, 2021 4:54 AM

R147, that JVA encounter reminds me of the time I drove into a Popeyes drive-through at night and there was a man dressed as a sad clown in a satin suit standing in my headlights in the drive-through lane. I reversed out of the parking lot and went to the other Popeyes down the road.

by Anonymousreply 154August 9, 2021 2:46 PM

R153 I miss the simplicity of the 80s and 90s, even early 00s. By 2008 things started becoming over the top.

You lames don’t have to keep acknowledging Gary was hot. Everyone knows. That’s why Ted was cast as him. You think they were casting a fug to lead off the spinoff? No. They wanted a handsome, fit blond All-American White Boy playing that part.

He was a Ewing, after all.

Ackroyd was probably the better actor, but looking back, he never could've pulled off the raw sexuality mixed with vulnerability the way Ted did.

Mccashins bio says her and Julie Harris were let go because of cost cutting. They were much more interesting and compelling to watch than Sheridan and Phillips.

I think Michelle Phillips had some health problems the last few years

by Anonymousreply 197August 9, 2021 4:06 PM

The first two seasons on DVD were not commercially successful, so WB will not be releasing any more. Season 1 did marginally, but season 2 totally tanked. Dallas and Dynasty DVDs were big sellers, thus probably why they got the reboots. Knots was just never as iconic a show as Dallas or Dynasty. As has been said many times, it was basically a P&G soap stuck in prime time.

by Anonymousreply 198August 9, 2021 4:08 PM

R195 R197

Julie Harris stole the movie I sucked in! Critics raved about how she was the only shining light in the puddle of bong-water that was "The Dark Half."

Her character wasn't even in the novel. They just invented her for the sucky movie, and cast that old crone so they'd seem less idiotic for hiring me!

by Anonymousreply 199August 9, 2021 4:10 PM

The "I'm offended" generation will never know how good the openings from these shows were. Recently, David Jacobs, in the Cast Reunion a few months ago said that the foreign countries where Knots Landing was very huge were Germany and France. Even the French opening was pretty good. Very 80s.

Hot Irish men seldom age well.

by Anonymousreply 215August 9, 2021 6:36 PM

I don’t think Doug Sheehan was hot. But he was boyishly handsome. I think the writers did a great job writing the Val/Ben relationship so it was believable that he was Val’s second great love after Gary. They, unfortunately, could not repeat this feat with the Danny Waleska fiasco.

by Anonymousreply 216August 9, 2021 7:21 PM

This is silly, but the thing I loved most about Knots Landing was their final scene never ended in a freeze frame like the other nighttime soaps.

by Anonymousreply 217August 9, 2021 8:40 PM

To me, the absolute best Knots Landing plot was when when Jill concocted her elaborate scheme to try and kill Val and make it look like a suicide. It was brilliant. She goes to San Francisco for a convention, picks up some dude, drugs him so he passes out in her hotel room, then drives to LA, forces Val to write a suicide note and swallow pills, then drives back to San Francisco in time to "wake up" next to the guy she picked up so she has an alibi.

And it all would've worked out perfectly if Mac hadn't seen Val through the window, passed out next to a pill bottle. He broke into her place and got her to the hospital in the nick of time!

by Anonymousreply 218August 9, 2021 8:47 PM
the foreign countries where Knots Landing was very huge were Germany and France.

I wouldn't say that's true. Cannot speak for France. But in Germany, KL only aired in the afternoon on a daily schedule like a daily soap (in the late eighties and nineties.) Dallas was on its way out when KL started in Germany. Not many took notice. But hey, it was never cancelled; they aired every episode and re-ran them for years.

Michelle Lee actually said in an interview that the lack of international success is the reason why there probably would be no reboot of the show. She called the show a national success but nothing of the sort of Dallas or Dynasty which were huge worldwide. She may want a revival, but she's always been very aware that it's not gonna happen. William Devane's take was: There is no reboot because the reunion special was fucked up by people who didn't understand the show (his words!)

by Anonymousreply 224August 10, 2021 1:56 AM

Gonna nitpick R218. It wasn't Mack who found Val after the forced overdose - it was Frank, her running partner, who had seen the twins playing on the front yard unsupervised and suspected something was wrong. When they told him Mommy was "asleep on the floor," Frank dashed upstairs to Val's bedroom and called for help.

Also, Jill flew back and forth between San Francisco and LA - she didn't drive! Her plan would never have worked with a 12 hour round/trip journey!

A LOT of discussion went on among the writers to make sure the plot was actually feasible.

by Anonymousreply 234August 10, 2021 2:35 PM

Abby and Val should've scissored. You know they wanted to.

by Anonymousreply 235August 10, 2021 2:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 240August 10, 2021 3:33 PM

Read my signature at R234, you fucking twerp.

by Anonymousreply 241August 10, 2021 3:34 PM

R240 exactly. They never mention such a thing until someone challenges them and then suddenly they “worked on” the show or film as well, specifically that episode etc.

Look at that posters posting history. He never worked on that show, and has posts that imply he is a Millennial.

I guess he worked on the show since birth.

by Anonymousreply 242August 10, 2021 3:35 PM

R241 that wasn’t your first comment. If you worked on the show why didn’t you disclose this much earlier?

by Anonymousreply 243August 10, 2021 3:36 PM

R234, I'd love to hear about the planning that went into that particular storyline. I enjoyed 'Poor Val' more than the stolen babies and was surprised that, after a weak 1987-88 season, they came back with such a strong finale and momentum that lasted for most of the next season.

by Anonymousreply 244August 10, 2021 3:37 PM

R241 Oh, well that settles it.

Now read my signature.

Okay, R237. Any comments on the write-up from R246? I mean, you worked on the show after all.

*snort*

by Anonymousreply 247August 10, 2021 3:45 PM

R246 yes, I knew that too. Just like I knew that poster was lying. They’ve been commenting for a while, but not suddenly claim they worked on the show. Why not say that 100 comments ago?

And why does he claim to be a Millennial in some posts if he worked on the show? He was working on the show at 2 years old?

by Anonymousreply 248August 10, 2021 3:46 PM

Does anyone else remember when CBS tried to showcase reruns hosted by the cast? This was in the late summer of 1989. They ran a handful of 'newer' episodes (they were all from S9 and 10, so I'm guessing those hadn't gone into syndication yet?) and had little intros from various stars out of character. They appeared to be in a bunker surrounded by Knots Landing artifacts and video tapes. It looked like my bedroom in high school.

At any rate, they re-edited the last two episodes of S9 and showed them as one episode, without any of the Santa Tecla scenes. I think Lynne Moody and Larry Riley covered the intro for 'The Perfect Crime.'

by Anonymousreply 249August 10, 2021 3:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 250August 10, 2021 4:40 PM
At any rate, they re-edited the last two episodes of S9 and showed them as one episode, without any of the Santa Tecla scenes.

This is how most fans watch them anyway.

by Anonymousreply 251August 10, 2021 4:41 PM

Actually, if you read that plot summary, it sounds like Jill both flew AND drove. She flew there, did what she came to do, but then the flights were grounded so she had to drive back. So both of the posters are correct and incorrect.

by Anonymousreply 252August 10, 2021 8:18 PM

R252 And the "I worked on the show" poster is a liar.

by Anonymousreply 253August 10, 2021 8:22 PM

I remember when Val was put in the psych ward after her so-called suicide attempt. No one would believe her about Jill (anyone who'd seen Jill drunk should have at least considered it, shit) with the exception of her senile roommate Sheila, played by Billie Bird.

Val coming out of her coma only to see Jill standing there... God, that was good. And then Jill got shoved out of the hospital room by said dotty roommate.

by Anonymousreply 254August 10, 2021 8:27 PM

man, i need to get a bootleg of the full series and watch it again. Fuck the cheap bastards for only putting out the first two seasons on DVD. You cannot fucking tell me that Falcon Crest sold better than KL.

by Anonymousreply 255August 10, 2021 8:29 PM

KL used a lot more popular music than the other nighttime soaps , because of Ciji/Cathy, and Anne/Mack later on. I wonder if that’s why it isn’t available.

by Anonymousreply 256August 10, 2021 8:31 PM

I, for one, would be fine never having to hear Ciji/Cathy sing again.

by Anonymousreply 257August 10, 2021 8:35 PM

R257, it certainly did come across as filler, didn't it? By 1984-86, I was fast forwarding her song sequences.

by Anonymousreply 258August 10, 2021 8:39 PM

I hated Latham/Lechowick era. Their writing was very tongue-in-cheek, and it was if they were mocking some of the characters. I switched to LA Law at that point and rarely watched it again. The earlier seasons were played much more dead-seriously, even when the storylines started going over the top by S4 or S5.

r279 That's awesome! Did it resemble the set for Karen's house?

by Anonymousreply 281August 10, 2021 10:33 PM

R279, no, not at all. But the interior of the Falcon Crest house matches the studio set(s) for that show.

by Anonymousreply 282August 10, 2021 11:07 PM

Years ago my friend and I went to Crystalaire Place.

Before we got there, he put that Television’s Greatest Theme Songs CD into his car’s CD player, and cued up the Knots theme.

We pulled into “Laura’s” driveway, as the owner came out of the garage. He suddenly yelled at me, “HOW DARE YOU SLEEP WITH MY HUSBAND” and slapped me across the face. Before backing out and driving away.

The owner of the house looked confused. I was annoyed. My friend laughed.

by Anonymousreply 283August 10, 2021 11:58 PM

I hate the way the they always single out Karen, Abby, and Val as the central female characters. Laura was very important to the series too, and gave the show a unique voice. Yeah, okay, she didn't stick around for the entire run, but neither did Donna Mills, who only did a net of one additional season than McCashin. I think they tried to recapture Laura's wit/sardonic personality with Melinda Culeo's Paula, who probably came much cheaper than McCashin, but it just wasn't the same.

by Anonymousreply 284August 11, 2021 12:22 AM

What happened to Knots Landing Motors? Did Karen finally sell it? Did Gary commit arson for the insurance money?

by Anonymousreply 299August 11, 2021 1:29 AM

Paul Carafotes (Harold) and Boyd Kestner (Alex) were the two hottest guys on the show for me. Too bad they didn't know how to use either one of them, though.

I enjoyed the later seasons a lot too, although the much maligned first half of Season 13 left a lot to be desired. However It wasn't all bad. Thankfully they turned things around for the second half.

Melinda Culea's Paula character was originally brought on to come between Mack and Karen, but viewers weren't having that and they eventually paired her up with Devane. She wasn't intended to be a Laura replacment. She wasn't particularly memorable, but there far worse actots and charaters than she was. Jean Hackney, Amanda Michaels, Joseph Barringer, Pierce Lawton, Benny Appleman and Vanessa Cunt, err Hunt were far worse. Thankfully most of them didn't last too long.

by Anonymousreply 300August 11, 2021 1:33 AM

When Desperate Housewives started, I hoped in my heart that I would find the neighborhood atmosphere I loved so much in the first three seasons of Knots Landing. You know, the cul-de-sac mood... It was definitely not the same. It was good but different. They don't make them like the soaps from the 70's and 80's anymore

by Anonymousreply 301August 11, 2021 1:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 303August 11, 2021 1:37 AM

Wait, I thought Teri Austin's Jill was the one that was supposed to come between Mack and Karen. When the viewers weren't having it, they rerouted her into Gary's orbit. Or am I getting that wrong?

by Anonymousreply 311August 11, 2021 1:45 AM

R304 I think Jill was supposed to be just a tease for an affair for Mack, but untimately would't happen. Jill was originally intended to be a short term character, but Teri Austin impressed TPTB so they kept her on. Then they seen the chemistry between her Shackleford and paired them up. They were lovers in real life for a few years also.

I think the Mack and Paula affair was supposed to happen, or Karen at least thought it happened, to break them up for a bit.

by Anonymousreply 312August 11, 2021 1:46 AM

Always interesting when a character is created with the intention of a short story arc or just a one season character but they end up popular with viewers or with producers so they’re kept around.

Ciji was supposed to be a one season character who is killed at the end of her debut season but she became so popular they kept her around longer. Devane's character was supposed to have an 8 episode arc then be gone but he became so popular he ended up on for 9 seasons, etc.

by Anonymousreply 313August 11, 2021 1:49 AM

I thought it was a nice touch that they had a disabled actress on the show. I wouldn't know any other show that had a disabled actor on the payroll without much fanfare. John Pleshette claimed in an interview that he was the one who had the idea for Knots Landing Motors. He told the producers that the characters needed a place other than the homes and cul-de-sac to interact, so David Jacobs incorporated his idea. Looking back, that was never a place where the characters inter-mingled. I think the creation of the Daniel restaurant in S4 was a much better vehicle to have the characters interact. Too bad they dropped it at the end of the season.

by Anonymousreply 336August 11, 2021 3:36 AM

Is KL running on streaming services? I see "Dallas" all over the place but no "Falcon Crest" or KL

by Anonymousreply 362August 11, 2021 1:02 PM

I believe Dynasty and The Colbys are on Hulu.

Dallas was on there too, idk if they still are.

KL is nowhere. And no, they were never as big as the other two anywhere in the world. Michelle Lee says that they had “good” ratings but nothing compared to the other two and hardly anyone would speak about their show because everything was about Dallas and Dynasty. KL was secondary to those two. One of the creators said KL “struggled” for a long time because they were always overshadowed by the other two.

by Anonymousreply 363August 11, 2021 1:05 PM

Now that the streaming industry is starting to consolidate, I am hoping that services shift their effort away from gaining customers to keeping them. What other show type is better suited for that effort than a serialized soap? Here is to a new dawn of weekly soaps. (I refuse to call 2017 Dynasty a worthy soap, or even a TV show)

by Anonymousreply 364August 11, 2021 1:20 PM

I think KL never did well in syndication/reruns. No reason to stream it if it’s not going to be profitable. But if they know it’s not profitable, they shouldn’t enforce their copyright so aggressively either. Just let it be “abandonware.”
I believe Dynasty and The Colbys are on Hulu. Dallas was on there too, idk if they still are.

None of those is streaming on Hulu, which only has the new Dynasty.

by Anonymousreply 366August 11, 2021 2:23 PM

Dynasty and The Colbys very much was on Hulu at one point, with both being taken down.

by Anonymousreply 367August 11, 2021 3:10 PM

I think original Dallas is in IMDb TV right now.

by Anonymousreply 368August 11, 2021 5:15 PM

Warner Bros. owned Lorimar at one point so maybe KL will run on HBO Max. If not there perhaps Paramount+ since it was a CBS show.

by Anonymousreply 369August 11, 2021 7:29 PM

The final verdict: KL is not streaming anywhere, Dallas is free on IMDB, The Colbys is free on YouTube (search for it, duh), Dynasty is not streaming anywhere, and Falcon Crest is not streaming anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 370August 11, 2021 10:07 PM

Obviously there are no plans to reboot Knots. If WB was even scoping out a reboot, they would've made old episodes available somewhere, even on a pay per view basis, to get attention and an audience for a reboot.

If you rewatch the early Dallas episodes where they discuss and introduce Gary...through the eyes of today. It really seems like it would be leading to Gary coming out of the closet...instead of moving to Southern California with his hillbilly wife.

by Anonymousreply 377August 12, 2021 12:09 AM

R377 times have changed. People move non stop now, but then it was expected of you to continue life with/near your family.

by Anonymousreply 378August 12, 2021 12:14 AM

R378I mean more the drinking...them going on about how he was closer with Miss Ellie rather than Jock...he was "highstrung"...Lucy could have been the result of a young Gary sleeping with a woman to figure out his sexuality...etc...

All 14 seasons of Knots are on youtube but unlisted, but are currently set to private by the uploader. You can only access them in their playlist. They do this fairly often, unfortuately. I think they do this to keep them from being removed by copyright claims. I need to get a new external harddrive and download them all the next time they're unlocked.

by Anonymousreply 388August 12, 2021 4:53 AM

R388, not anyone. The episodes were removed this past Tuesday.

by Anonymousreply 389August 12, 2021 4:57 AM

R389 They might have just set to private where only the uploader can see them. I'm guessing they found out it was linked somewhere and set it to private. They've done this several times before. They also renamed the account, so it could be back at some point. Check back a few times a week and they might have them viewable again.

by Anonymousreply 390August 12, 2021 5:03 AM

Fuck WB for continuing to shove [italic]Friends[/italic] and [italic]Full House[/italic] down our throats while holding out on the great [italic]Knots Landing[/italic]. If MTM Productions had made it, it would have won 50 Emmys.

by Anonymousreply 391August 12, 2021 5:35 AM

C'mon can you see some of these characters in close-up on a 75" TV in 4K?

by Anonymousreply 392August 12, 2021 1:04 PM

R392 lol. The look of the original series starts getting more washed out in season 8 as the actresses demanded Vaseline on the camera lens.

by Anonymousreply 393August 12, 2021 1:47 PM

By season 5, Donna Mills looked like someone doing a poor drag impersonation of her.

by Anonymousreply 394August 12, 2021 3:06 PM

David Jacobs said that Diana Fairgate was the most hated character on the show by viewers. Not love to hate, like Abby, JR, etc, pure hatred because she was so damn annoying. She was really miscast. Unlike Pat Petersen and Steve Shaw, she did not look like she was swimming in the same genetic pool as Michele Lee, Don Murray, or Donna Mills.

by Anonymousreply 395August 12, 2021 5:00 PM

Diana was very annoying, especially in seasons 4 and 5. I think they realized it was a mistake making her a main cast member. After the Chip storyline ended, mid-season 5, she wasn't seen very much, before being totally written out early in season 6.

Though to be fair, Knots real weakness was intigrating the younger cast into storylines once they grew up. The same thing happened with Michael, Eric, Olivia, and Julie.

by Anonymousreply 401August 12, 2021 5:46 PM

It sure is. Lucy is not having it.

by Anonymousreply 402August 12, 2021 5:46 PM

Lucy took a pin and pricked that pretentious twat right in the hot air valve and I love her for it.

by Anonymousreply 403August 12, 2021 5:58 PM

Lucy was fine.

by Anonymousreply 404August 12, 2021 6:00 PM

R398 Joan Van Ark doesn't seem to be the least bit bothered by the fact that she's aged horribly compared to her two co-stars.

by Anonymousreply 405August 12, 2021 6:04 PM

She's terribly chagrined, you just can't tell because her chemical peel never healed.

by Anonymousreply 406August 12, 2021 6:06 PM

R403, Lucy in this clip is a hint of how damn funny she could have been as a 'dirty old lady' type in an 80s sitcom. If only she'd been less dependent on the old persona, Gale Gordon, writers. etc. She's bawdy and bitter and fantastic here. This should have become her schtick.

by Anonymousreply 407August 12, 2021 6:11 PM

R407 nobody wanted that from Lucy. It’s horrifying.

by Anonymousreply 408August 12, 2021 6:31 PM

I was not a fan of that long hair on Constance in R411. I think that was Season 3 or 4 hair. Before the mullet, which I also disliked but for different reasons.

Constance always killed on Pyramid. I can't see Michele or Joan pulling that off, though I love them dearly.

Quick note about Season 4: Ginger really hit her stride as a character that season, with Kim Lankford playing her as constantly irritable and near murder and full of eye rolls and smirks. Ginger's just done.
Though to be fair, Knots real weakness was intigrating the younger cast into storylines once they grew up. The same thing happened with Michael, Eric, Olivia, and Julie.

One of the biggest mistakes [ital]Knots made was writing out Olivia. She was groomed to be the new Abby, including being married to that lunkhead beefcake. Instead they abruptly send her to live in Miami for no reason whatsoever. And then they brought on the God-awful Stacy Galina and the gorgeous but vapid Felicity Waterman who both flat-lined.

by Anonymousreply 414August 12, 2021 10:06 PM

The other year when she was on GH, my father was flipping through the channels and saw her. After figuring out who she was he said, "Damn...she's still hot!"

by Anonymousreply 417August 12, 2021 10:14 PM
Joan Van Ark doesn't seem to be the least bit bothered by the fact that she's aged horribly compared to her two co-stars.

Miss Joan Van Ark is a Yale-trained actress. Yale, darling, YALE! Her ambivalence is a Master Class of subtlety.

by Anonymousreply 418August 12, 2021 10:16 PM

On another thread they are talking about Jennifer Lawrence is playing agent Sue Mengers, whose first real break as an agent was when the then primarily stage focused Julie Harris signed with her because she wanted to do an episode of Bonanza, and more tv... Mengers arranged it and the producers had a special script commissioned. So...without her we might never have gotten Lilimae.

by Anonymousreply 419August 12, 2021 10:24 PM
So...without her we might never have gotten Lilimae.

I could've had that role if it's weren't for that stuck-up ginger bitch! That's what I get for offering David Jacobs a blowjob.

by Anonymousreply 420August 12, 2021 10:30 PM
One of the biggest mistakes Knots made was writing out Olivia.

I feel the opposite. To me they should have written her out along with Abby. I never cared for the character. I don't think she had (m)any redeeming qualities, so I could have loved to hate her. She was always unreasonable and confrontational for no reason. She was basically whining all day about her evil mother or inconsiderate boyfriend or whatever else rubbed her the wrong way. Urgh... When she was fighting Abby, I always rooted for Abby. The other aspect is that the actress was not strong enough to convey a multi facetted character that could carry her own stories. Not her fault. Like any other child actor, they were hired for their cuteness, not for their acting chops. But bottom line: When she left it wasn't too soon for me.

by Anonymousreply 421August 12, 2021 10:31 PM

r421, but surely you don't think that Stacey Galina, Penny Peyser, or Felicity Waterman were any better? At least Olivia had history.

by Anonymousreply 422August 12, 2021 10:41 PM

Remember when JR Ewing’s shooter Kristen Shepard came to KL and Ginger walked in on her and her husband Kenny having sex? It was implied that Kristen was giving him a blow job.

Remember Gary grieving over his brother Bobby Ewing’s “death”? Great acting by Ted Shackelford. Interesting that they never acknowledge he was actually alive.

by Anonymousreply 423August 12, 2021 11:01 PM

Who did Lucy Ewing suck and receive on her one and only KL episode? She never returned to meet her half sibs, visit her grandmother, comfort her mom when her dad ran off with Abby, etc.? Now THAT is trashy!

by Anonymousreply 424August 12, 2021 11:13 PM

It's funny, I thought Stacy Galina was more interesting in her two episodes as Mary Frances than in her three seasons as Kate. She at least had a little fire as Mary Frances and such a bore as Kate. I hated that they used her so much (along with Brian Austin Green) in the 1997 mini series.

by Anonymousreply 425August 12, 2021 11:21 PM

R419, I'm imagining Lilimae playing her autoharp and trademark songs for Sue Mengers.

by Anonymousreply 426August 12, 2021 11:21 PM

The reunion they should have is who got the worst plastic surgery contest. They all look like shit.

by Anonymousreply 427August 12, 2021 11:39 PM

Oops, Lucy Ewing didn't have half sibs, she had *full* sibs (the twins). Still, she never met them. What a B!

by Anonymousreply 428August 12, 2021 11:54 PM

My assumption was that Gary's affair with Abby, the separation and divorce, Val's book and tabloid publication of her life with Gary, etc. all caused a massive estrangement between the three somewhere in the middle of S4. At the beginning of S5, Val confides to Karen that she hasn't heard from Lucy in months and months.

Maybe Lucy just got sick of their Gary and Val shit.

by Anonymousreply 429August 12, 2021 11:57 PM

Lucy was tired of Val trying to pass her off as her barely younger sister. Bitch please!

by Anonymousreply 430August 13, 2021 12:13 AM

Does anyone remember why DL fave Danielle Brisebois was replaced as Mary Frances by the complete and total cipher Stacy Galina?

by Anonymousreply 431August 13, 2021 1:26 AM

Stacy was 10 cents on the dollar.

by Anonymousreply 432August 13, 2021 1:50 AM

Abby should have manipulated Gary into adopting Olivia and Brian, to ensure they received a Ewing inheritance. It also would have given them both a reason to stick around after Abby left.

I loved how Olivia had Abby’s number , even as a child. Olivia and Val’s relationship was interesting-Olivia resented Abby for keeping her away from Val.

by Anonymousreply 433August 13, 2021 2:31 AM

I liked Olivia and her character was important as she humanized Abby.

by Anonymousreply 434August 13, 2021 2:34 AM

Can someone give me a little context behind the Amy Carter reference in that JR interview? I know who she is but I'm not familiar and don't get why it was so funny.

by Anonymousreply 444August 13, 2021 5:06 PM

John Pleshette said that he and Connie didn't get along so well at first, since she had wanted her real-life husband to be cast as Richard. Sour grapes on her part. He also said that he and Jim Houghton did not get along at all.

by Anonymousreply 445August 13, 2021 5:29 PM

Were the four women the prototype for the SATC gals?

Karen = Carrie

Abby = Samantha

Val = Charlotte

Laura = Miranda

by Anonymousreply 446August 13, 2021 5:43 PM

R446 no and none of them were alike.

The Golden Girls gals were more prototypes, and back then the two shows got compared.

by Anonymousreply 447August 13, 2021 5:46 PM

Wouldn't Lucy be a little P.O'd that her parents dumped her with her grandparents?

by Anonymousreply 448August 13, 2021 5:51 PM

When you grandparents are worth billions, while your daddy is a drunken loser and your mama is a waitress in a dive diner in Tennessee, it's really a no brainer.

by Anonymousreply 449August 13, 2021 6:19 PM

Lucy was a pass-around ho in Knots Landing.

by Anonymousreply 450August 13, 2021 9:25 PM
He also said that he and Jim Houghton did not get along at all.

Talk about sour grapes. BTW, how the fuck did Richard bag Abby in S2? Huh? I know she was playing him for free legal help against her ex-husband Jeff but she should have been savvy enough to put out for that chimpanzee-looking man. He wasn't even hot enough for Laura.

by Anonymousreply 458August 14, 2021 5:22 AM

R454 I thought it was realistic for Laura’s character that she would have a husband who wasn’t good looking enough for her. In the earlier seasons, she had extremely low self-confidence.

Valene gets called “the little engine that could” by Karen, but it’s just as apt a description for Laura, who truly transformed with her successful real estate career and started putting her foot down with Richard on occasion.

When Gary married Abby, I always thought it was sweet karmic justice when Abby’s daughter Olivia bonded with Valene more than her mother.

by Anonymousreply 465August 14, 2021 4:15 PM

I still remember Olivia's crying scene when she learned that Gary banished Abby from the ranch, thinking she had to leave him too. True-to-life, Abby tried to guilt Gary with her broken-up kids.

by Anonymousreply 466August 14, 2021 4:18 PM

In 1980 women who were stars in the late 30s did not look this horrific. They looked anywhere from surprisingly well preserved to elderly; with some pulled a bit too tight, but they still looked human.

I'm just a little bit curious about what some of you think these women should look like. Or is it that because they look like they look it calls into question how you look. Because time hasn't stood still for any of us, and I'm assuming that if you're posting on a Knots Landing thread you are at least in your late 40s. Tick tock, cunts.

by Anonymousreply 488August 15, 2021 2:24 AM

R488 I know people who prefer the miniseries to the Cameron film

by Anonymousreply 489August 15, 2021 2:26 AM

Really r489? I’m not one of them. I thought that it was terrible. Henner should have been waterboarded for her inept and hammy portrayal of Molly Brown. And Waterman was equally craptacular. Then the ship sinks she lets loose this feral wail as she holds the baby of the family she works for. Her acting throughout was ghastly.

by Anonymousreply 490August 15, 2021 2:29 AM

Felicity Waterman was no Fiona Hutchinson. That's for sure.

by Anonymousreply 491August 15, 2021 2:31 AM

R490 I liked the film better too, but do know people who liked the that tragic tv one more. Idk why.

My mother was one of them.

Wow, a Titanic mini-series sounds terrible. Why would anyone want to watch that? 🤮

by Anonymousreply 493August 15, 2021 2:35 AM

Because cast member from KL was in the miniseries r493.

by Anonymousreply 494August 15, 2021 2:38 AM

I don't even remember Felicity Waterman from KL. I know who she is, I ONLY know her from KL, but I can't picture her, nor do I remember who she played.

by Anonymousreply 495August 15, 2021 2:51 AM

OMG! Donna Mills looks like a freak. Who would do that to some poor old lady.

She's a cross between a bad Barbra Streisand and that Cat Lady.

She needs to be locked away so no one has to look at her. They'll just turn to stone if they do.

R502 - Yes, I'm sure that Donna Mills was petrified that she would be out-sexed by a nine year old.

by Anonymousreply 507August 15, 2021 1:27 PM

I always got a lipstick lez vibe from Donna Mills. Ya sort of had the feeling that Abby fucked Gary, Greg, etc., solely for money and power, but it was Karen she really wanted to scissor with.

by Anonymousreply 508August 15, 2021 2:23 PM

Rumor has long been that Donna Mills is a lesbian. A friend of mine (yes, I know) ran into her at an LGBTQ fundraiser back when Knots was still on the air, and she she was there with a female companion with whom she was clearly intimate.

Personally, couldn't care less one way or the other. At least she was her then-cache to support gay rights.

by Anonymousreply 509August 15, 2021 2:34 PM

Imagine how different the show would have been with Penny Marshall cast as Laura Avery.

This was never a thing, was never going to happen, but yet I wonder.

Sort of like if Elder Lucille Ball has been cast as Lilimae Clements. Gary and Val's house would have reeked of cigarettes and there would have been a subplot about Momma having to go smoke out back and her growly-voiced resentment of her dim bulb daughter and that jellyfish husband of hers.

Can David Jacobs get Halle Berry to reprise her role as Debbie? That would be a great selling point for a Knots reboot.

by Anonymousreply 513August 15, 2021 4:11 PM

I don't think Halle has been very busy lately so it's possible.

by Anonymousreply 522August 16, 2021 5:54 PM

Tonya was a very good child actress but somewhere around her promotion to ingenue in 1985-86, her performance became super whiny and unfortunately mannered. It was like she started taking acting lessons and ruined herself.

I wasn't sad to see her go in 1990. They sort of tried to make her more Abby-like, but she played it at sitcom level and just didn't have the chops. Lar Park Lincoln was doing the NuAbby thing much better. Tonya's dramatic work was sitcom-level. God, I hated Harold and Olivia's poverty storylines/bits.

In the early years of Knots, I assumed Brian Cunningham was slow, like Carrie Ingalls. When the Notorious BAG took over the part in 1986, Brian was suddenly articulate, outgoing, lively, etc. Before that, he was kind of a slug and had about three lines each season. Even the legion of Jason Averys got more to do.

by Anonymousreply 523August 16, 2021 6:03 PM

"Harold" is a terrible prime-time soap name.

by Anonymousreply 524August 16, 2021 6:06 PM

R520 it was only like 4-5 years after Knots ended.

by Anonymousreply 525August 16, 2021 6:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 531August 16, 2021 8:39 PM

What was Constance thinking with that mullet in season 4? She was thin to begin with, but after she lost the baby weight, she was scary thin for a while, and that hairdo just accentuated her sunken facial features. Then she had that perm for a while, which was aful. She looked much better with her trademark longer hair. I think she looked her best in season 3.

by Anonymousreply 553August 17, 2021 1:29 AM

Couldn’t the producers have found a way to cut the budget other than dumping Laura and Lilimae. It’s not like either of them were in every episode. I hated that Lilimae wasn’t brought back after Val overdosed , or “died,” or was battling Danny Waleska- she should have been there to support her grandkids.

by Anonymousreply 559August 17, 2021 2:29 PM

Aunt Ginny was a fine replacement. Betsy Palmer was amazing. I was like, Julie Harris who?

by Anonymousreply 560August 17, 2021 2:33 PM

Long hair doesn't look good on older women, unless it's put up. Someone needs to tell Joan...

by Anonymousreply 561August 17, 2021 2:34 PM

I wouldn't label Joan exactly an older woman. It's not like she's 85 or 90 sitting in a nursing home making lanyards all day, for heaven's sake.

by Anonymousreply 562August 17, 2021 2:36 PM

Joan Van Ark is like 98 years old and is rocking a middle part!

by Anonymousreply 563August 17, 2021 3:11 PM

Oh I hated Aunt Ginny. Nothing against Betsy Palmer, but it was a weak substitute for Lilimae (and a slap in the face to Julie Harris, who gave that show some much coveted class).

by Anonymousreply 564August 17, 2021 3:35 PM

Aunt Ginny was so loud.

I liked when Lilimae went bonkers for a period in S5. I hated how they wrote her after Joshua's death.

by Anonymousreply 565August 18, 2021 3:12 AM

Aunt Ginny was a big ol' country dyke. She scared the hell out of Paige.

by Anonymousreply 566August 18, 2021 3:31 AM

Jim Houghton once said in an interview that most of the cast was intimidated by Julie Harris and maintained a bit of distance, except for Kim Lankford, who basically had no idea of how big a star Julie was. Jim said that Kim was the first person to knock on Julie's dressing room door. She introduced herself and welcomed her to the cast, and they became fast friends.

by Anonymousreply 569August 19, 2021 12:27 PM

Joan is 78, r562...This does make her a "senior citizen"

by Anonymousreply 570August 19, 2021 12:52 PM

The great thing about JVA these days is that she could be anywhere between 78 and 150 and no one would know because aging is not the problem...As they say: when you get older you have two choices: To look old or to look weird.

by Anonymousreply 571August 19, 2021 6:22 PM

I always considered Knots Landing, the older version of 90210, with similar characters and friendships and bonding mixed with the obligatory soapy theatrics and social issue stories

Melrose Place was way too over the top, campy and mean spirited tonally compared to Knots or 90210

by Anonymousreply 572August 19, 2021 6:25 PM

But KL lasted long. Longer than anyone thought that it would. The characters were much more relatable than the characters in [italic] Dallas & Falcon Crest[/italic].

by Anonymousreply 573August 19, 2021 7:00 PM

R569 Kenny and Ginger were supposed to be the young, newly married couple. You could always tell they were afterthoughts to the show runners/writers though. It was pretty telling that they didn't appear after the pilot episode until episode 4. Ginger did get some decent character development though overall. You got some of backstory and could understand her motovations. Kenny was pretty one demensional though. Both were disposable though, and their departure was no loss really.

by Anonymousreply 574August 19, 2021 7:21 PM

I wanted Gary and Kenny to spit roast me, while Richard jerked off his super-hairy cocklet in the corner.

A reunion for a show that only people in nursing homes remember? I don't think so.

by Anonymousreply 584August 20, 2021 4:42 PM

I remember one of Knots' funniest moments was when Greg tried sneaking in on Abby in the shower, trying to catch her without make-up on, declairing "Gotcha!" only for Abby to turn around, fully made-up, blinking her meticulously made-up eyes at him and giving him a coy smile as he frowns in dissapointment. Too funny.

I don't remember this scene. Did that really air? That's almost breaking the fourth wall. Must have been in one of the later seasons.

by Anonymousreply 588August 20, 2021 6:50 PM

R588 season 10 to be exact. It was a little too cute/too clever as the later seasons tend to be, but it worked.

by Anonymousreply 589August 20, 2021 7:03 PM

I loved that they played the Fargates as a regular nuclear family those first few seasons. That element kind of faded away when Don Murray left.

by Anonymousreply 590August 20, 2021 7:15 PM

That's because the show got more soapy after Murray left.

by Anonymousreply 591August 20, 2021 7:53 PM

R591 a similar thing happened with 90210

The early years were mostly self contained episodes revolving around the wholesome Walsh family then its spin-off Melrose Place took off and 90210 became more soapy and now serialized to compete with Melrose and the Walsh parents were soon written out

Poor Tonya Crowe. The only season she was elevated to the opening credits was the season they went without cast shots, and instead used that stupid sand castle. They probably did that so that viewers wouldn't be reminded that Donna Mills had just left, but still it was stupid. However, this is the worst of their opening credits IMO. So fucking pretentious. And Connie's pivot is the worst pivot in the history of opening theme pivots.

Yes, and the time when Greg had sex with her pillow never noticed the difference.

by Anonymousreply 596August 20, 2021 9:52 PM

Agreed, R594. That pretentious, faux-Leroy Neiman painting with the oh-so-precious artsy black and white head shots in dramatic turns was incredibly cringe-worthy. Favorite all time was the floating boxes (season 4-8?), then the cast shots inside the cul-de-sac (seasons 1-3?), then the sandcastle. They also did kind remake of the floating boxes later on with very 90s color frames... meh.

I hated the sandcastle opening

Granted, Constance's head twirl was no Susan Sullivan on Falcon Crest, but I wasn't expecting to see her at all once news of her exit came out.

If they had gone to Connie and said, 'here's what we're paying Samantha Sollers and her husband and daughter; we can pay you that much.' She might have stayed.

I heard a rumor that if JVA had stayed for that last season, Val would write Greg's memoir; she was going to go to the hospital where Laura went to die and FIND HER THERE.

Remember they lost her body after she 'died.'
