I never went to the Continental baths, but I did see Bette sing "Friends" in Washington Square during the 1973 Christopher Street Liberation Day parade. A guy named Stanley walked up to me and asked me to be his friend, and we went to his 15th Street apartment and got better acquainted.

I went to the Continental Baths in, eary 80s. It was completely deserted - a ghostly place then - but I went to pay my respects to ruttings past.

OP, you need options for those of us who were not adults before 1974. The only people who could have legally heard her in the bathhouses are at least in their late sixties now.

I saw her in a performance at NYU circa '71- '72. Manilow was her accompanist. She was great - fresh, vulgar, still seemed to be figuring out where to go with her Divine Miss M persona.

I also, quite accidentally, saw her on Broadway as Tzeitel in FIDDLER in 1969. She was unknown then, but stood out in the cast with her big voice and big head of read hair (even under a babushka). I didn't connect her with the later Bette until an article mentioned that she had played in FIDDLER.
