Im OK with it. Everything is a slippery slope. If it helps capture abusers, so be it. There are literally 728 million iPhones in use worldwide....Plenty have adult content. As dan savage says, we have porn studios in our pockets. So if they use their software to find child abusers, so be it
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 6, 2021 5:05 AM |
Removing ADULT content from CRAIGSLIST was the first move. It hasn't curbed any crime and that's why ZERO other countries have done it. If anything, before banning the Personal Ads, CL helped LOCATE where crime was happening. Not to mention Craigslist is now virtually valueless--and the real Craig probably couldn't give it away now. Does Apple even pay living wages to the CHINESE workers building their phones so the executives can make MORE bonus money?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 6, 2021 5:20 AM |
R7 read again! it will scan your photos to match those in the database, it does nothing to capture the abusers, it only catches people who are sharing or downloading the photos, which brings the question, what's the purpose here? Stop people downloading CP?

R5 yeah I don’t blame you, mate. I’m due a new phone (been clinging to a melting SE for years), and even I wasn’t frankly I’m fucking sick of struggling against AppleID & iCloud (such an extortionate, glitchy, shitty verification/storage option). Thought I’d get on with the company’s product better, but it turns out after five years of gritting my teeth, actually I hate it here at Apple, Inc.
Could you or another kind poster recommend an Open-source capable Android device that’s really durable and easy to use? (and also link a way to transfer data onto one from iCloud?) Much obliged.

by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 8, 2021 2:12 AM |
You're missing the point R31.
In terms of scanning iCloud for CP content, this does nothing in terms of stopping this content being made in the first place, it won't affect those producing such content, only those viewing it. So how long until Apple announce a feature in the next next iOS that uses AI to scan videos as they're filming in real time under the guise of stopping said content being made. And suddenly there is another "feature" that is open to abuse and expansion over time.
Ios15 also brings the feature where by iMessages are scanned by AI so that if someone under 16 either receives or sends an X rated picture, it will arrive blurred and if the person opens it, it will send an alert to their parent (if they sign up to this feature). Once again it's a slippery slope. The path is paved and who is to say this can't be used for other types of images in future - anti govt protests, riots etc and alert the authorities.
Apple have announced these features under the guise of child safety knowing full well no-one is going to ague against protecting children. But then the backdoor is creeping open and who knows how this tech could be used in the future. Theres no going back.
This is very dangerous.

This comment is so stupid.
Yes, Germany does not protect PUBLIC hate speech, Nazi glorification, or holocaust denial under its free speech laws (you can still display your Nazi flag in your private home) but, in contrast to the US, privacy laws and data protection are much stricter there. Remember the hissy fit, American companies had after the EU had passed their General Data Protection Regulation?

It is indeed a slippery slope to automatically scan private content and it can lead to a lot of problems, but on the other hand child porn is the fucking worst and there should have been a concerted effort to ban this shit a long time ago.
Personally I have an android phone right now, but still no illusions about complete privacy there. I mean, Google basically owns my ass - they already know where I go, where I've been, what I've looked up and without trying to sound like a conspiracy theorist, I imagine that much more data gets saved or screened by intelligence services than we're aware of, so...
R9 At least by keeping people from downloading and exchanging CP you destroy the market and therefore hopefully reduce the demand and production.

Apple's further clarification
[quote]Apple's CSAM detection capability is built solely to detect known CSAM images stored in iCloud Photos that have been identified by experts at NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) and other child safety groups...Furthermore, Apple conducts human review before making a report to NCMEC. In a case where the system flags photos that do not match known CSAM images, the account would not be disabled and no report would be filed to NCMEC.
NCMEC has about 20,000 photos in their database, and Apple's statement made it clear if the flagged photos do not match any of those 20,000 photos, they will not file a report no matter how "bad" the photos might look like to their human reviewers, I believe this approach is to protect Apple themselves from the lawsuits since they have no idea how the photos were taken, the context and how the photos ended up in the user's phone, be it exploitation or not, Apple has no interest finding out if the photos are not one of 20,000 labelled ones.
PS how many people want strangers/human reviewers to look their photos without consent?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 9, 2021 8:03 PM |
I hate the concept of child porn but this crosses a line. There have already been too many instances of photo companies flagging innocent pics of kids taking a bath and calling it porn.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 9, 2021 9:10 PM |
Need to point out, the new photo scanning policy only applies to Apple users in the US, Apple cannot and will not do that in any other countries. It's funny how many people here in the US voice their concern what if countries like Russia, China or Saudi Arab force Apple to scan other content like political messages etc, and those "concerned" experts use that as their reasoning why Apple should not embed or utilize such technology in their products, but the fact is Apple can't even do that in any other countries. It's almost like Apple is hoping/expecting you to raise such concerns, so they can come out and firmly deny that.
[quote] Let us be clear, this technology is limited to detecting CSAM stored in iCloud and we will not accede to any government’s request to expand it.
Now your grave "concern" for political dissent in China is being taken care of, everyone should be happy! We will roll out this new policy in the coming weeks as planned in the US.

Once again, American people fell for Apple's dirty trick, I said American people here I will explain later. First, let's rewind how the whole thing unfolded in public
1. Apple announced they will scan iPhone and iCloud for CP automatically without users' consent (a tiny footnote from their announcement: limited to USA users only)
2. As expected, a lot concerns were raised. For average users, it's the intrusion of privacy, you can find tons of comments online, people are not happy about this feature forced on them, but the "disapproval" voices you heard from news media and tech blogs are slightly different, they focused more on something else or as they claimed, something BIGGER and more important, this feature opened the door for mass surveillance , what if China, Russia or countries like Saudi Arab demand scanning for political or social messages?
3. After intense debates played out in news media for days, Apple issued a clarification. First we are very sorry for the confusion and miscommunication, but let us assure "you", by "you", they meant the news media and tech blogs, the function will be limited to scanning for CP only, it will not expand to other areas and we will never yield to the demand of other governments (that is China, Russia...)
4. After the clarification, the "noises" died down by the end of the week, which completed the 5-day news cycle.
Back to American people, as mentioned the scanning is limited to American users only, not in other countries, why not? Now please ask yourself, on what earth you think adversary countries like China or Russia would allow an American company to scan their users phones, forget FISA court and NSA, an American company from USA with unrestricted access to Chinese or Russian iPhones? That's NEVER gonna happen! The grave concern of mass surveillance in China or Russia is a complete bullshit! They would like to have an easy and handy tool to watch their own citizen, but it won't be Apple, an American company cannot be trusted here! Then why the news media and tech blog experts loudly asked questions based on a non-existent scenario and made a huge fuss about it?
Were these people paid by Apple to raise fake concerns and divert the real ones? - maybe!
Were these "smart" people too dumb to realize they were played by Apple? - more than likely!
There is no way that Apple didn't expect the backlash from this policy, they were fully aware of its impact and fully prepared the people will come out against it. But to reduce the negativity, Apple carefully planned the whole thing, they issued an announcement with minimum amount of information on what they will scan and without any context on why and how they will do it, or whether they are capable of scanning other things like text etc... because they were waiting for you to ask questions so they can answer them to disperse your concerns. If Apple had issued a plan with all the details, scanning your photos to match a database of about 20,000 photos, and the function is limited to photos only not texts, and they will not do it in other countries especially won't expand the capability to the demands of governments like China or Russia etc...there be no questions to be asked and the concern will be solely on invasion of privacy of American people, and that's very hard to defend for Apple. So by letting you ask questions, especially the stupid ones on China or Russia, Apple can proudly answer them "No we will not listen to Chinese government..."
"We are sorry for the confusion...?" No, they were not sorry, they were smiling, the media played along exactly as Apple had expected, turned the focus away from your privacy to the government of China and Russia, and Apple came out on top again as the fighter for freedom, the invasion of privacy? it's just a "tiny" noise now, Apple didn't even have to answer.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | August 22, 2021 8:17 AM |
This is really insidious. They start with child porn, because anyone who would complain about it must be a pedo, right? You're not a pedo, ARE YA?

The "what do you have to hide" cunts can fuck off the nearest cliff. It's called the expectation of privacy.
You don't strip nude and walk into your office everyday; what do you have to hide???
If you don't have a thing to hide, then please post an erotic photo of yourself from your phone, in this thread, right now.

R92 Samsung is the market leader for Android phones and personally I think they manage to provide top quality for their respective market segments (from cheap to expensive). Although I think Xiaomi is gaining fast by selling very capable hardware at cheaper prices than Samsung (however I've heard they also use ads to get those low prices - but Samsung has bloatware too). I just don't know what Xiaomi's service and update policy is like.
In general the problem with Android phones is that you probably won't be able to hang on to your phone for 6-7 years like you apparently did with your iPhone 6. Apple is the best in that regard, Samsung is fairly good for Android standards, but even they only promise three updates for their top phones (which essentially means 3 years). Of course you can still use your phone afterwards, but at some point your old Android version will be too old for some apps and might have safety issues.
In terms of privacy they might not scan your phone's images (at least not officially), but I'd say in general Google is actually way worse of a data leech than Apple. I'm an Android user myself, but I'd say no such thing as privacy with Google.

It does seem like it may be necessary though. Child porn is truly one of the most evil things on earth and I’m comfortable giving up some of my freedom if it can help fight it.

I inherited my child porn from my grandparents .

Samsung's biggest problem is the bloatware. No one wants their knockoffs of Google apps or their "Bixby" AI assistant, but they refuse to put in good ways to turn them off. They also are much more complex than almost any Android phone as far as configuring settings.
And, Samsung had ads in some of the bloatware too, at least until recently.
Xiaomi is a Chinese company and headquartered in Beijing. I would not want Chinese-made smartphones because China is not a benign nation under its current leadership.

R110 I know you think you're being funny, but that's a great way to 1) contribute to the "gays are pedos" stereotype, and 2) have the intelligence services take a closer look at you. There are, in fact, some things you should not say in an open forum, even if joking.

R113 sorry to break it to you but the Karen meme is tired and played out. Only idiots and those late to the trend are still using it.
