It’s interesting how in the States we only care about gymnastics, swimming, basketball, and sprinting when it comes to the main events. Nobody really cares about pole vaulting and nobody knew who he was until the past week. Also, despite all the jokes about him competing for the better country, he’s famous in Sweden mainly for being American.

It's also very difficult to make the Olympic team from China, Australia, Russia, The Netherlands, Germany, etc. But in Olympic competition, Armand did compete against American pole vaulters--and he still beat them with a score of 6.02. He won the gold. The Americans came in second (5.97) and fourth who also tied with the Greek pole vaulter (5.80).

If Armand decided to compete for the US one of those other Americans would have been left home, so they should be grateful.
