The real relationship between Capote and Harper Lee

Was Truman jealous of her with “ Mocking Bird “ success ? Dominick Dunne referred to Capote as duplicitous. Was Harper insecure , fear of failure? What say you insightful ones at DL?

I don't know, but "In Cold Blood" is one of my favorite books.

Excellent true crime book. It’s pathetic that Capote had a crush on Perry Smith

Capote was jut a sad little man with a personality disorder. ICB is definitely a great book, but I still think he seemed to be a salty little shit.

What personality disorder? Narcissism?

R4 maybe. He was a Cluster-B for sure.

R4 I think he was bipolar or something like that.

Insecure for sure. After the enormous success financially and especially critically of Harper’s book “ To Kill..”. She did not write more prolifically. Was it fear of not being able to top her legendary hit?

R2 I think everyone missed the boat over the years in writing off Capote's self destruction as due to a crush or attraction to Perry Smith. That makes it too easy to just say he was sexually attracted to Smith. I don't buy it. I think it ran much deeper than that. It's like with Johnny Carson and how miserable he was as a person. If I'm remembering correctly Truman gave Joanna Carson refuge at his house any time Carson was abusive to her which was quite often. Capote told Joanna it's what Johnny's mother did to him during all the years she made it clear she never wanted him. She didn't want boys because according to her they were too much bother. She never acknowledged Johnny's success no matter what he did. Neither Capote or Carson's mothers should have ever had children. They clearly didn't want them.
