John's a nice guy and a very fine actor. He's probably doing OK $-wise. Dynasty and The Colbys were on the air for ten years total and he's done soaps and other projects, so his SAG/AFTRA pension is likely decent. Plus, John's dad was a famous broadcaster, so he comes by the showbiz thing naturally. Also like his dad, he has a great voice, which he uses in voice-over work.
The DL may want it remembered that he did a fair amount of theatre, even during his peak career years. He was one of the later tv stars who worked for John Kenley (Promises, Promises). And after Dynasty he did a tour of Dial M for Murder with Roddy McDowall that was supposed to come to Broadway but didn't, it seems to have just been out of step for the time.
Wikipedia says he's a Republican.

John James is loaded, aka filthy rich. Even Joan Collins commented on this in one of those Dynasty documentaries, telling how he'd always be on the phone with his broker during breaks on set. He's made some very wise investments over the years.

He was hot in the 80s. Boyishly handsome in those early seasons of Dynasty and Daddy in the later seasons.
Those looks faded by the time he showed up on As the World Turns as Susan's husband in the 2000s :(
