by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 2, 2021 9:07 AM |
Love Simone Biles! I am so glad she will be returning for the balance beam! USA USA!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 2, 2021 9:15 AM |
I don't care about this quitter
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 2, 2021 9:17 AM |
It's amazing how quickly people turned on Biles.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 2, 2021 9:19 AM |
Where in Tokyo did she secure a batch of Adderall?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 2, 2021 9:19 AM |
If she actually has "the twisties" like she said, flipping around on a balance beam would seem like a recipe for disaster. She's going to end up breaking her damn back on national television.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 2, 2021 9:21 AM |
Probably from the Russians, Belarussian Crosseyed.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 2, 2021 9:21 AM |
Not really, R6. She'll just change her dismount to a double pike and be fine, unfortunately.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 2, 2021 9:21 AM |
R4 actually it's not surprising at all. These people probably can't walk to the corner and back without getting winded. It's the same beer bellied Trump supporters who find Black women an easy target - despite her being the most celebrated gymnast in her sport. They're ignorant and not to be taken seriously.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 2, 2021 9:22 AM |
oh please, she spent the whole week checking out her competition and thought she might have a chance to medal in this event so she's taking part. She ain't go no twisties.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 2, 2021 9:22 AM |
The fact that the top two in qualifying are the Chinese.... yes, Simone is quite confident she's going to end up medaling because the Chinese won't.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 2, 2021 9:25 AM |
Break a leg, Simone!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 2, 2021 9:28 AM |
Cross-eyed? Not me, right?
Meth Queen, Simoné, shouldn't try to embarrass herself any further though. It won't end well.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 2, 2021 9:29 AM |
I actually really like Biles and firmly believe she really did have some sort of breakdown. She just has no history of pulling stunts or backing out of tourneys or anything.
I hope she wins. Or at least medals.
That said, it's sorta Suni's Games now. And this will overshadow her. Which sucks.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 2, 2021 9:30 AM |
R12, yes, Simone, PLEASE BREAK A LEG!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 2, 2021 9:31 AM |
Just dropping in to say I don't care a whit about gymnastics or this Biles person. ZZZZZ.

And yet you cared enough to click this thread AND leave a comment, r16.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 2, 2021 9:33 AM |
[quote]She just has no history of pulling stunts or backing out of tourneys or anything.
She also didn't have a history of losing until Olympic Trials.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 2, 2021 9:33 AM |
I'm supportive of her as well, but I rather see her get checked out back home and start fresh in a different competition than this Olympics.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 2, 2021 9:34 AM |
Biles looks far too old to be an Olympic gymnast. To tell the truth, she looks as if she may have already entered puberty.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 2, 2021 9:42 AM |
this is her last olympics. she's already 24. she ain't no spring chicken
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 2, 2021 9:43 AM |
If Simone can't make it to at leat another 3 more Olympics than she is fa failure... most definitely NOT Goat.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 2, 2021 9:46 AM |
Drama Queen - she wants the LAST word to blunt the All Around winner. Success or failure, she's now guaranteed it. Simone GETS it.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 2, 2021 9:53 AM |
If Biles wins the beam will her fans carry on with the nonsense about how all the other events have an asterisk next to the winner's name due to Simone's withdrawal?
I have mixed feelings about Biles competing in the beam final, which happens to be the last event. If she wins that will be the closing image of the gymnastics event and she will take away the attention that the others like Sunisa Lee deserves. I wonder if Simone is perhaps turning into a bit of an attention whore who wants herself back in the spotlight.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 2, 2021 9:55 AM |
R24 of course they're going to. It will only PROVE to them that no one would win without her having pulled out.
And it's actually a win-win for Simone. If she medals, it'll be seen as a courageous moment where she rose to the challenge and came back to prove to everyone she's the greatest, regardless of the color of the medal.
If she doesn't medal... it'll be seen as a triumph of the Olympic spirit and she'll be the poster child for how it's not about medaling but fighting yoour own personal demons and doing your best!
There's a big payday for her either way and she'll get even more exposure.
If she didn't compete, her place in these Olympics would end up completely forgotten.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 2, 2021 10:00 AM |
I would say this trick baby has to be on tina to be able to fly through the air like that.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 2, 2021 10:01 AM |
Well, a gymnast certainly cannot be flying and spinning through the air if the body and mind are not aligned. It's good she dropped out of those previous competitions. An accident or fall could cause serious damage to an athlete's body.
Hope she's now feeling better and can focus. Good luck.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 2, 2021 10:02 AM |
And don't forget... she can fall and still medal... just like she did last time.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 2, 2021 10:03 AM |
r28
she didn't fall in Rio but she did have a major mistake... It's scary that Simone has won GOLD or BRONZE in every beam final 2013-2019(minus 2017 where she didn't compete). SHe is the only 3x beam champ. I do wish her the best... I hope she is ok
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 2, 2021 11:10 AM |
She is a fake ass bitch just like Naomi Osaka. I gave her the benefit of the doubt at first but then she released an obviously staged video of herself "failing" in training. And now she just miraculously recovers after she abandoned her teammates in the teams final? I think she is just afraid of losing and mental health is an easy excuse. I can't stand these attention whores who confuse having a couple of bad or stressful days with mental health problems. They are mocking people who go through real problems. Go fuck yourself Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 2, 2021 11:36 AM |
I think Osaka has legit mental health issues, r30. (I don't know enough about Biles to speculate, but given her upbringing, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.)
And tell me: are you a miserable cunt in real life, too, or just on DL?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 2, 2021 11:43 AM |
I hope she wins the gold. I'm rooting for her. Go get it Simone!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 2, 2021 11:47 AM |
At this point, I really don't care what she does.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 2, 2021 11:54 AM |
Amazing that Osaka's 'legit mental health issues' kick in on the surfaces she doesn't like.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 2, 2021 12:11 PM |
You fat greasy whores in your moms basements have no idea what it's like to be competing in a sport. Its as much mental as it is physical at that level.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 2, 2021 12:42 PM |
I think Simone Biles had legitimate issues that would have posed a huge risk to her health and her life if she had gone out and performed her high risk routines while not being all there mentally.
Naomi Osaka, I think, is full of shit and just using mental illness as an excuse to cover up the fact that she wants to control the narrative in terms of how she is presented in the media.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 2, 2021 12:55 PM |
R36 how can you tell the difference? Not trying to be snarky, but I am having a hard time believing that such a serious mental block magically disappeared within one week. The GOAT conveniently “recovers” in time for the last marquee gymnastics event of the games—and then, win or lose, she’ll be proclaimed STUNNING and BRAVE.
S. would have garnered more respected by bowing out gracefully after withdrawing from the first event to allow her teammates their share of the spotlight. And if she’s doing this last event to fulfill some sponsorship contract…aren’t THEY the ones we should blame for making S. put herself in physical danger?? Her sponsors took a gamble and lost. They should still have to pay up.

Sure would be nice to pick and choose my work.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | August 2, 2021 3:17 PM |
If she really has mental issues, she should have gone home, got help and stayed away from the media and social media. What she did however was the complete opposite and she acted like an attention whore. Now she is gonna position herself as the heroine who beats mental problem. Fuck off. You don't recover in a few days if you really have issues. It's Suni Lee who should be celebrated, not this fake ass bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 2, 2021 3:24 PM |
Why does this young black woman bring out such hate and hostility from a bunch of losers on a gay men's forum? WTF do you care so deeply that you much write such bile and hateful nonsense?
You know NOTHING about the sport and the more you write, the more ignorant you self-own.
The BEAM doesn't require the same amount of twisting that the other events do. She'll probably adjust a few of her moves but if you really were invested, you'l watch her routine to see that she performs almost no twisting. Lots of flipping but that's not the challenge. She's been through this condition before, she knows what she can still fight through and what she can't.
You hate-filled halfwitted soulless assholes really believe that she just pulled "stunt" because ... I don't know... she's lazy? Or she needs more attention? Or just she's too fragile? Or what? You're reasoning is literally insane. Your critical thinking skills are woefully low, your lousy rationale is perilously close to idiotic Trumpers who refuse vaccines, don't believe that covid is real, and still cling to the fantasy that Biden lost.
How much is Putin paying you to shit on American athletes during these O games, huh? Nothing is left off the table for Putey, right? Everyone is game, especially beloved, admired athletes who work incessantly through injury and disappointment to reach the highest pinnacle of their sport. BTW, the Russian team isn't representing Russia so why are they at the games?

It is very strange because people don’t create all of this made-up drama and BS in their heads with the male athletes, generally. It’s misogynistic.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 2, 2021 3:27 PM |
NBC is no doubt paying Simone to do the beam. Probably dangling a commentary contract at her, ready to dump Nastia Lukin. NBC KNOWS it will get blockbuster ratings for Simone Tuesday night!

R40 Suni Lee is MVP of the Tokyo olympics, this is not a dig against Biles but a statement of truth. Every athlete has their expiration date.

by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 2, 2021 3:46 PM |

Is Michael Phelps still the best swimmer in the world? No. He's practically acient in athletic years.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 2, 2021 3:49 PM |
R52 no drama. Fans and I think Biles forgot that ageing sucks, particularly in a youth dominated sport like gymnastics. Katelyn Ohashi has joint and bone problems that are more common in the elderly due to the punishing physical demands of the sport. Gymnastics is though on the body. I think the metal health excuse is a cop out. People don't want to admit that gymnastics is as grueling as it is. Occam's Razor: Biles has aged out of gymnastics.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 2, 2021 3:55 PM |
Well, 24-years-old is up there for gymnastics, but at least these days, you're seeing more gymnasts remaining competitive in the sport well into their twenties. Moreso than the late '70s through 2000 when it was all 15-year-old pixies who weighed 90 lbs.
Just on FX finals today, a 30-year-old took the silver and a 24-year-old won the bronze. But gymnastics can be very punishing, especially without the right technique and conditioning.

Simone has been nothing but gracious, sweet, and supportive of the team and she’s still getting more shit than most of those men. She hasn’t really done anything “bad” like all of those men you listed.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 2, 2021 4:43 PM |
She should bow out. ROC have better gymnasts anyways.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | August 2, 2021 4:45 PM |
R59, nobody is saying that male athletes are left without criticism.
The issue is that fans/commentariat don't pit the male athletes against EACH OTHER, like they do here. Several posts here involve some imagined fight between Suni and Simone, or Simone and imaginary Russian athlete names. This is not the case with male athletes, and it's sexist.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 2, 2021 4:54 PM |

When you court big-money sponsors and the media by proclaiming yourself the greatest athlete of all time in the months leading up to your second trip to the Olympics, you create expectations. Whether or not you meet those expectations will be scrutinized whether you like it or not.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | August 2, 2021 5:14 PM |
I agree R69. As much as mental health might need a bit of focus when reviewing the stress upon athletes, and as admirable as Biles is for bowing out and cheering her team on, when she knew she'd possibly be hurting herself - the media is afraid to be addressing how she may have contributed to her own stress by participating in her own hype machine. If there is a lesson for anyone to learn here - it is to remain humble even when faced with triumph and momentum of your own skills/talent.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | August 2, 2021 5:18 PM |

R71, I think R69 is referring to her "GOAT" iconography of late.
But it seems, from her statements, that these embroidered goat images on her costumes are defensive, as they are to 'hit back at the haters'.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | August 2, 2021 5:27 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 77 | August 2, 2021 5:35 PM |
People seem to be mistaking a competitive sport with kindergarten. I swear if fraus took over sports no one would win and everyone would get a trophy for participating. It's a fucking winner takes all competition. It's cutthroat and nasty. Stating that someone did better than another person in a physical competition is not putting them against each other.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | August 2, 2021 5:35 PM |

Yes, it’s something symbolic and meaningful to her. It was meant as a symbol of self-confidence and to celebrate her talent while encouraging others that they can be great at something and acknowledge it.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | August 2, 2021 5:37 PM |
Gymnastics is not just for the young girls anymore. The average age has been trending up. If Biles wants to compete in Paris, she will be the Gold medal favorite hands down.

Suni Lee was GOAT. Get over it.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | August 2, 2021 5:50 PM |
She is the GOAT by far... Most WORLD medals, 4 golds from Rio, GOLD on every event except UB where she won a silver, 5 Team, AA, and FX gold medals, 3 beam golds, 3 vault golds,
with that said, her going around doing commercials with goats, leos with goats etc was a little too much for me... she did put tons of pressure on herself
by Anonymous | reply 94 | August 2, 2021 5:50 PM |

Biles is yesterday's news. She's over...I'm supporting the up and coming youngsters. They need the support, not Biles. She's faking it.
She saw the weak field in the event and now her mental issues don't matter no more. FAKE.

by Anonymous | reply 106 | August 2, 2021 5:59 PM |
I am in the middle on this — Biles record speaks for itself. She should not be criticized for her mental game because it’s just soooooo hard to control that. But! I do think what she did last week disqualifies her as GOAT. I’m sorry, but a GOAT transcends their own head games. But that’s not a slam on her decision, and I’m definitely willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. It makes sense that as she’s gotten older, she has more clarity that she is not invincible, that seems like an organic, natural part of maturing. But, then she can’t be the GOAT. Sorry Simone, you can’t have it both ways.
Suni is the hero this summer.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | August 2, 2021 6:01 PM |

I always like the Chinese teams on the beam, they’re known for producing great routines and athletes on both beam and uneven bars. But on beam the Chinese beam style is known and appreciated for being special. Too bad this Chinese gymnast got injured just before the Olympics, because this routine is really showcases the Chinese beam style.

R115 Nice bringing racism into this but then again, it has been here throughout.
I’m relatively new to DL but there are A LOT of very old, white, racists here. Very bitter. They prefer their gymnasts to be anorexic, beaten by one or two Karolyis, petite, do more ballet than actual gymnastics, and WHITE preferably with blond hair/blue eyes.
That should illuminate where the conversations have gone and will continue to go.

I wasn't a fan of Simone Biles, yes I know who she was prior to this. she did really well in the last olympics was all I know. But then this happens and I read more about her...
not a fan. don't like her and not a hater. just think she's fake like Naomi Osaka. wearing and declaring you are GOAT is just not cool.
I don't care who her sponsors are and I sure ain't gonna support whatever project she has. She quit on her team.

R116 please don’t lump people who like artistic elements and athleticism in gymnastics with racists like R115. My favorite gymnasts are skilled, athletic, have good form, and keep a touch of artistry, someone like a pre-2009/ 2010 Cheng Fei for instance on vault and floor, and He Kexin on uneven bars. I’m also someone who, while not a fan of Biles’ style of gymnastics, can understand why she wins fairly under today’s rules/ scoring system which skews technical skills over execution. It’s similar in figure skating, where you can attempt jumps and fall but still be rewarded higher points than the next competitor.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | August 2, 2021 6:47 PM |
Her body is really ugly too. Compare that to the gymnasts from other countries.

by Anonymous | reply 126 | August 2, 2021 7:15 PM |
R126 It’s not just HER. Did you see the men not sticking landings and still winning? So many were going out of bounds. The Russians fell twice on beam and still won Gold as a team.

by Anonymous | reply 128 | August 2, 2021 7:29 PM |
R127, that's gymnastics life under the D + E scoring system rather than the old 10.0 system.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | August 2, 2021 7:29 PM |
The old 10.0 system was flawed, too.

by Anonymous | reply 131 | August 2, 2021 7:35 PM |
R127, that's what happens when you change the scoring system but not the deductions that go with things like stepping out or out of bounds. When they don't carry the same weight as they once did, the athletes are not going to care about staying in bounds or actually landing skills properly when they can still score big.
The fact that a step out of bounds is the same 1/10 deduction as it was 40 years ago is ridiculous. It needs to be a percentage of the athlete's score.

by Anonymous | reply 137 | August 2, 2021 8:37 PM |
R132 I agree. Also would add that bad form be deducted aptly. Don’t reward difficulty over execution too much, there has to be a happy medium.
For instance, you can have Maria Paseka of Russia scoring high and getting medals by doing the ugliest Cheng vault. She actually won with that poor technique, mainly noticeable splayed legs and flexed feet in the air. Also, at this compilation of vaulters doing the Cheng vault. Jade Carey and Shallon Olsen both start with not great form (splayed legs), able to close them but both have flexed feet throughout. Hong Un Jong of North Korea doesn’t even straighten her legs and her feet remained flexed throughout as well.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | August 2, 2021 8:39 PM |
R138, yeah they need to fix the Execution score as well as the deduction amounts.
This standard 1/10 or 1 point deduction is worthelss when the athletes will just pile on the skills so that no matter what, they'll still win. You should not be able to fall or step out and still win a medal. The fair way to do it is a base percent off your score so that it impacts each athlete exactly the same.
You go out of bounds? Each time you do it's a mandatory 10% off your total. You fall off a piece of equipment? It's a mandatory 30% off your score.
Make it actually mean something.
If deductions had actually ben given the same weight as they had prior to the scoring change, there's no way Simone would have been able to get as many titles as she has. That's no fault of Simone's, however it's a major flaw in the scoring system.
Further, they should either have a mandatory deduction for atrocious dance (looking at the Americans) or offer a bonus for actually dancing and not just standing there and waving your arms around while you catch a breath. It seems all other countries are capable of doing this but the US Team.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | August 2, 2021 9:22 PM |
R136, be sure to catch my running commentary at the link below!
by Anonymous | reply 140 | August 2, 2021 9:23 PM |
R139 Exactly, US women's FX needs more than just arms waving around between tumbling passes. Contrary to what R124 thinks, artistic elements in artistic gymnastics isn't just ballet, and yes pointed toes is part of good form. Good form is part of the whole package.
Cheng Fei's 2004 FX shows you don't have to be balletic in order to be artistic, artistry is also about putting effort into the performance instead of helicopter arms while catching breaths before tumbling passes.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | August 2, 2021 10:10 PM |
It's perplexing how the Chinese put so much work and effort into making sure their athletes not only upgraded their routines and were competitive on floor and vault, but also mentally prepared so that going in to 2008, they'd set themselves up for Gold... and then shortly after let it all slip away and went back to being basket cases when the pressure was on and not being competitive at all on vault and floor.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | August 2, 2021 10:26 PM |
R142, my thoughts exactly. It's like they gave up after winning 2008 team gold. What's going on over there?
by Anonymous | reply 143 | August 2, 2021 10:29 PM |
So true R142 they have the talent and backing system, it is perplexing to a degree why they've dropped so much. My take following the Chinese team is that they have so much young talent at the top level that the gymnasts are breaking and injuring themselves trying to get to the elite level national team. By the time they get there they're half broken and get easily injured trying to perfect the difficult skills, like beam specialist Li Shijia (R114) who got injured before Olympics. Chinese gymnasts are more compact and slim built than other countries, so not as known for their power, I think Cheng Fei was the last powerful Chinese female gymnast. Definitely the program is stale and needs to think more than just having good bar and beam workers, you do need power on vault and floor.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | August 2, 2021 10:40 PM |
I would have thought that the floor exercise would have been the obvious one for someone having the sort of difficulty she is having. Much less risky. I hope she doesn’t hurt herself.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | August 2, 2021 11:48 PM |
I don’t see an issue with how the gymnasts perform. The Americans don’t look much different than the other countries. I enjoy the hard skills back to back. I agree maybe make some deductions more severe to force them to do routines more cleanly. I heard commentators say this floor seemed really bouncy since so many had issues sticking their landings. Simone would be great under the old system, too. She executes at a high level-clean lines and all that jazz. The old system had flaws as well. Judges hammer gymnasts now on the tiniest things.
I’m in favor of the routines like the men. Just do it.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | August 3, 2021 12:07 AM |
Beam is the one gold that she has been craving since her flop in 2016.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | August 3, 2021 12:09 AM |
R146 you can't see the difference between The Russians, French, Italians, Chinese vs The Americans choreography on floor? Okay then...
And no, Simone would not have done well under the old code. Count how many times she's gone out of bounds and still won titles under this code. She would never have been able to do that in the old code.
She should be grateful she's competing in this era where she's aided by the upgraded equipment and not having to train or compete compulsories.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | August 3, 2021 12:16 AM |
Additionally, under the old system, Simone's main advantage disappears... being able to stack up difficulty increasing her skills. If she were forced to be based out of the same 10.0 cap as everyone else, she wouldn't have done as well as she has.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | August 3, 2021 12:17 AM |
R148 She wouldn’t have done the hardest skills under the old code so I agree she would have been great under the old system. She has excellent execution.
I don’t care about dance moves on the floor. I want tumbling. This isn’t dancing gymnastics. The men don’t do anything “artistic” so why should the women?
by Anonymous | reply 150 | August 3, 2021 12:19 AM |

Any beam finale predictions anyone wants to share? As usual, what I want and what I think will actually happen are two different things.
My dream podium: Guan, Iordache (my sentimental favorite), Saraiva or Urazova for bronze. Having said that, I probably cursed the aforementioned, and the opposite results will happen.
I guess Biles will dismount with a double tuck? I don't see her performing the full-in or double-double given her current head-space.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | August 3, 2021 12:45 AM |
If you like tumbling so much then go watch the tumbling championships, not gymnastics. Swear to god, these tumbling stans won’t be happy until floor routines are gymnasts doing only tumbling passes from all 4 corners.
Now for some amusement on the beams. One of the ugliest moves popularized in recent years is the wolf turn. It mimics the sit spin in figure skating but doesn’t look elegant as in figure skating because the gymnasts’ arms tend to flail to try to balance, that or their backs tense up and they look like amputated toy soldier.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | August 3, 2021 12:49 AM |
R153, I'd love for the Chinese to reddem themselves and take the top two spots, followed by Sunisa.
But we're talking about the Chinese so most likely they end up 7 & 8. Biles will dismount with a double twist and win. Sunisa will get the silver. Whoever else doesn't have a break will get the Bronze.

R157 oh fuck off with “old kween” shit. No one is saying tumbling isn’t important, you ass. Just pointing out great routines aren’t just tumbling passes but other elements.
Biles hate? Saying the truth about needing to balance difficulty with execution is not Biles hate. FYI she’s way more deserving of her floor medals than that awful Ponor who got way over-scored and rewarded for fugly floor routines. But I understand, a lot of Biles fans only started watching gymnastics in the last 10 years and have zero clue.

Larisa Latynina is the most decorated Olympic gymnast in history.
The 86-year-old Soviet gymnast has 18 medals.
Like much of the world, she was stunned to see Simone Biles, the four-time Olympic champion withdraw from events due to mental health concerns.
Biles could have challenged Latynina's record of 32 combined Olympic and world championship medals.
But the Soviet athlete says gymnastics has become even more physically and psychologically grueling than in her day.
"What we did is not comparable to what modern gymnasts do. Looking at what gymnasts do today, I'm a little afraid. I don’t know if I would have started gymnastics or not."
Biles was expected to be a frontrunner in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.
But she withdrew from the gymnastics team finals and all-around individual finals due to concerns about her mental well-being.
Her decision has sparked an outpouring of support from athletes and Hollywood for being vocal about her mental health and prioritizing it.
Latynina says it’s definitely a new trend.
"In our day that would have been - that would have been unacceptable."
In Latynina's era there was pressure, of course, to win medals for the Soviet Union, which used elite sport as a tool to boost its international prestige.
But she Said Soviet authorities' desire for the country's athletes to top medal tables was not perceived as coercion.

I think americans are now being dinged on execution scores. Which is why jade and suni had to redraw their routines on the fly.
I truly believe that Simone has mental strength issues, she just had otherwordly physical abilities to give her a huge headstart over everybody else— she has been open about this in her old interviews if you follow her. She fell and made multiple mistakes on day of team trials, she was crying pretty much all throughout the competition, but she had the crowd in st. Louis to cheer on her. In qualifications, she made mistakes and the judges low balled her team in execution— they were 2nd to russia, which nobody expected. This probably triggered a lot of self doubt in her that led to performance anxiety and eventually the yips. Suni and Jade re-tooled their routines to minimize their deductions- they had the flexibility and adaptability to do so.
I do believe Simone is going through a lot, what irks me the most is how she is on fricking social media all the time, presumably to protect her brand. The other ladies have been distracted by tiktok, insta and twitter too. How could their coaches just not tell them, hey you worked for 5 years for this, you all went through so much, why are you allowing yourselves to be distracted by social media? You claim you have mental health concerns yet you expose yourself to trolls 24/7, hire somebody to take care of your instagram sheesh! Same goes for Naomi, I believe her, she is kinda aspie, but dear lord, social media is the last place you should be in if you are mentally fragile.

Because Marta Karolyi is no longer there to tell them THE FUCK OFF if they get out of line.
She would probably kick their asses off the team, if they pulled that shit with her.
Now they're being coddled by their equally undisciplined American coaches. Which is why the wheels are coming off the wagon.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | August 3, 2021 1:47 AM |
R172 I was thinking the same thing. She pulled out of competition due to mental health issues, and the next day she was online defending herself. A coach should have stepped in and taken the phone away to help her focus/not exasperate the issue.

Suni Lee was also in the running for gold in bars, had one of the most difficult bar routines, and had been consistent but after AA they made her go from one interview to another when she was still in competition. She was also updating her instagram like mad. The whole team was doing this. Well, of course, she missed her connections, and somehow still medalled. The team is run by enablers who are too scared of what Simone will say about them to the media. They dont want no media bites that Tom took away the phone, which is nothing compared to the Karolyis feeding gymnasts an apple a day or something.

What are the vaults mostly being performed? Double Twisting Yurchenkos, which every Soviet athlete was doing in 91.. and what's the other one? Oh, a 2 1/2 twisting Yurchenko... who did that? Oh a Romanian.
What tumbling passes are routinely done? Double double? First done in 88... by a Romanian. A full twisting double layout? Done back in 91.
The sport really has not advanced much from the late 80s/90s. Think about it, at most, the most common skills done today were done 30 years ago and at most, the only upgrade is an additional twist.

For Olympics athletes, Adderall can be brought to Tokyo if they apply for exemption, Ritalin requires even more medical documents. I don't know the details but I have a feeling the reason she had trouble in Tokyo is related to the pills she is taking, her medication documents arrived late?
Talking about ADHD medication, it's widely abused in college because it helps you concentrate and focus. It comes no surprise that many elite athletes now are diagnosed with ADHD in sports that require concentration, it's sort of like the "contagious" asthma among swimmers, so many young kids overcome their asthma and become world class swimmers!

I doubt the social media is actually run by the gymnasts themselves.
Gymnastics is an industry and it wouldn't surprise me if it has some deal with NBC and/or the Olympics to have to keep social media buzzing.

She was sexually abused by the gymnastics doctor! It took her a good while to admit it publicly. Not unusual. Then good old NBC does a big interview with her right before she left for the Olympics, to tell the country all about it. They make her the person who calls out USA gymnastics! Right before the Olympics! How alone she must have felt when she arrived there! And I'm sure talking about all of it brought all the horrible stuff right back. She needs lots of therapy and support. All of this emotional stress and competition stress would bring down anybody. Including you!

So I’ve been watching on the NBC Sports app this whole fucking time and they decide to not show this NOW? Every rotation was available as a replay in the morning and this one isn’t - obviously they want to keep it for primetime tonight. Ugh!
I hate NBC.
by Anonymous | reply 217 | August 3, 2021 1:45 PM |
This morning was my last 2 am wakeup to watch events LIVE on Peacock. (Until Beijing.) NBC’s primetime broadcasts do suck as so many athletes are not shown. The best part of the Olympics is watching the “lesser” athletes and then comparing them to the top ones.
Has anyone used the Olympics app? Someone upthread said it was 4 screens without commentary. Is this true? And how did using it go?

The NBC Sports app is basically all olympics now. I favorite my sports to follow and watch them the next day. They had multiple apparatus feed for the AA - I don’t think they had that for these - but they were showing everyone.

She did a lot better than Sunisa. The hysterical Simone haters are gonna blame her though. Sunisa wasn’t as great this Olympics as they’re letting on. She won one gold, fucked up in the uneven bars, and did poorly in the balance beam. Sunisa is being overrated by the Simone haters because they’re using her against Simone.

Unless the scoring has changed, the balance beam scores seem low this year compared to the last Olympics. Simone's score of 14.000 would have got her a seventh place in Rio. Her Rio bronze medal-winning score of 14.733 would have got gold this year. And nobody got over 15.000 this year.

Sigh. What a sign of the times that on one hand you have unhinged Simone haters tearing her down with little-to-no knowledge of gymnastics itself, and on the other hand, you have Biles' rabid Twitter/Reddit fans who won't stand for any discussion of her unless it's a declaration of her being GOAT and how much everyone else sucks in comparison.

nothing. just a lazy, former great gymnast who rested on her laurels and didn't practice as much, using mental issues as an excuses to not compete coz she didn't want to look bad with no medals. She waited the whole week, checked out the competition and decided she could medal in one event and got bronze. All her mental issues went away like magic!

R237, that she's not a quitter and pulled out because of a very real and serious condition, and good for her, because who wants to see an athlete get injured in what can be a very dangerous sport? It's very clear to me that most of the harshest comments are from trolls who don't watch the sport, but they've become gymnastics experts overnight.
And at the same time, it's okay for gymnastics fans to make legitimate criticism about some of her gymnastics/have different stylistic preferences without getting shouted down with all the stupid GOAT talk.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | August 3, 2021 4:31 PM |

It was the Simone haters who first brought up the GOAT thing and then tried to say Sunisa was GOAT. That’s laughable.
by Anonymous | reply 245 | August 3, 2021 4:54 PM |
Both sides are wrong. Elite athletes all have some degree of psychological issues in their career. Whether it’s mental block, confidence issues, or stress of training and competition. These athletes have to try to balance athletics with life, normal life stressors just like the rest of us.
That said, it is wrong for the media and athletes themselves, to twist the psychological stress of being elite competitors into mental health disorders. These are two, distinct things. Public discourse on mental health is now centered on celebs and athletes. We’re told these people of privilege should be held up as examples of suffering from and overcoming mental health disorders. But all that does is trivialize actual mental health disorders and the people who live with them.
Biles has invited some of the pressure and criticism herself, but people need to give her benefit of doubt instead of piling on quitter pejorative shit. Yes she got payback by going the Goldie the GOAT, that’s on her. She also didn’t help herself by not letting the team and coaches know the extent of her troubles so they could prepare accordingly. Also, the evolving reasons gave people opening for criticism. First it was stress of competition, then it became mental health, and finally a case of the twisties, before now circling back to mental well-being . Maybe she had a little of each, who knows?
I’m not a fan of her style if gymnastics and yes, she’s benefited from the current scoring system which rewards difficulty over execution. Unbiased gymnastics fans kniw that Biles strengths lie in her difficulty, her execution is mostly in the middle range. But Biles has deservingly won under this system and you can’t take that away from her.
In her life she’s had her share of challenges, she seems like a nice person overall. I’d say leave her alone. That goes for Biles stans who aren’t really gymnastics fans but into cultivating cult of personality in Biles, and those who label her un-American for quitting. One dan criticize Biles without dragging politics into things. But People can critique the current scoring system too, without Biles stans accusing racism and not knowing that artistic gymnastics has artistic components or that artistry is not just ballet.

Gymnasts train for the scoring system they are in. (same with skaters). Biles trained for a system that emphasized certain aspects over others. If she had trained under a different system, he would have still have been among the best ever because she would have emphasized those aspects. No one goes from mediocre to best in the world just because the scoring system changed slightly.
by Anonymous | reply 247 | August 3, 2021 6:11 PM |
I tried to argue with the anti Biles loons in the various threads and it's just not worth it... that said I am very glad she was able to compete and do fairly well(and not kill herself)
by Anonymous | reply 248 | August 3, 2021 6:16 PM |
R247 did I say that she’d be mediocre otherwise or are you reading too much in trying to curb any perceived critique against Biles? You pretty much made my point about Bikes stans being unable to discuss the scoring system without taking offense at good arguments that has nothing to do with hating Biles. R139/ R148/ R149 made some good arguments which I won’t rehash here. Biles or not, today’s scoring system is heavily weighed towards difficulty, this is why stepping out of bounds or falling, or having atrocious form can still be rewarded with medals. As I’d said before look at Maria Paseka’s atrocious form on her Cheng vaults, fugly form but she won on difficulty. Biles stepping out of bounds or falling yet still winning, as she herself said, is another example.
Or how about in general, the crooked nature of not judging equally and finding deductions in order to lowball score certain gymnasts from not so powerful (influential) countries in the sport. Conversely, not taking deductions according to rules when favored gymnasts fail to execute or just plain omit an element? Not saying the old system was perfect because it wasn’t, but the current system sucks ass too.
So no, this isn’t a about Biles personally as you like to think. I said she seems like a nice person who’s had to deal with some challenges in life, and coming through it. But saying that I don’t particularly like her style of gymnastics or that she’d benefited from current system is not a personal attack. Because it’s not about her, she’s still a great athlete and she would’ve been great under the old system, but just that her advantage wouldn’t have been as significant. Again, unbiased gymnastics fans know that today’s judging/ scoring, difficulty is overvalued over execution and judges find ways to deduct or not deduct from E scores depending on whether gymnasts are favored. Russians and Americans have benefited the most under this form of favoritism, but gymnasts like Mai from Japan with usual lowball scores, have not.

Silivas' routine was my personal favorite.

R254, yes, it's unfortunate. There is much more emphasis on difficulty and power -- which in itself isn't bad -- but without compulsories and proper emphasis on things like form, toe-point, and dance, has made for a less elegant sport.
Silivas is probably my all-time favorite gymnast. Charismatic, elegant, original.

R252 Ponor was always overscored on FX, bad form frequently not deducted from her score. Look no further than ‘04 Athens floor routines, how the fuck did she get the scores that she did? Well, I'm sad that this competition is over. It was kind of a wild gymnastics ride this cycle, with lots of unexpected twists and turns. But even dispute being bummed that Simone had to go out this way, I found myself generally very pleased with how the WAG medals/placements turned out.
The good: most elegant Olympic AA podium in a long time; Rebeca Andrade getting it together was a revelation (she's a true lady); Yeo, Murakami, Ferrari medaling; Guan Chenchen winning beam; Suni Lee's success.
The not-so-good: Simone Biles twisties/drama; Larisa Iordache's rotten luck; underwhelming bars final.

I hate seeing gymnastics over but NBC ruined the coverage. I watched the full routines on Peacock, but it took the fun out of it. We all know NBC creates drama in primetime. That made it fun. It also made gymnastics very popular. I get not showing men’s rings or pommel horse in primetime, but they barely showed the men at all. Shockingly, the women’s coverage wasn’t much better. This will hurt gymnastics. Did USA gymnastics piss off NBC?
Highlights: Andrade, Murakami, Suni, Jade, Angelina (I actually warmed up to her), and the Italian girl on floor. A lot of firsts which is nice.

Bingo, R295.
The self-described “GOAT” has perfected the art of turning into the victim when the “GOAT” moniker no longer applies.
It’s insulting to other gymnasts and gymnast fans.
The rest of us in the public see a familiar HERO (or in this case “GOAT”)——->VICTIM play.

That brings up another point. Prior to the Olympics, Simone expressed concerns that she wouldn't perform as well because there'd be no audience. She needs the cheers and attention and applause of the audience.
Was part of her issue that she cant perform unless there are a ton of adoring fans supporting her? Was she able to compete in the last night of Finals because it was the maximum crowd of athletes possible with their eyes on her?

We often talk about the loathsome cunt Mary Lou Rotten winning an undeserved gold at the 1984 Olympics. When I looked up the results of the men's horizontal bar event at those Games I realized how successful the American men were in LA.
Team: Gold
All-around: Silver (Vidmar)
Parallel bars: Gold (Conner) and Bronze (Gaylord)
Pommel horse: Gold (Vidmar) and Bronze (Daggett)
Rings: Bronze (Gaylord)
Vault: Silver (Gaylord)
Floor and horizontal bar were the only events in which the US team didn't win a medal. I think this was an even bigger example of home advantage, biased scoring and benefiting from the Soviet-bloc boycott than Rotten.
The US men have never even come anywhere near matching their haul from LA.

There is worlds coming up in October which will still use the current code, the new code starts next year. I'm hoping gymnasts like Iordache, Flavia et al can go to worlds get some hardware. I would love Rebeca be the AA champ!

by Anonymous | reply 312 | August 4, 2021 1:09 PM |
R312 the code gets revised every few years.
by Anonymous | reply 313 | August 4, 2021 3:02 PM |
I hope the FIG revise the scoring for execution because only 1/10 deduction for falling is so ridiculous, this is partly why you can have multiple falls yet be in contention for medals. The E-scores is where judges have most leeway to find extra faults or overlook them. While on the difficulty values, judges can’t make deductions, they may decide not to reward you points if they see you omit or do your planned elements incorrectly. But like I say, pack your routines with elements with high D-scores, do them correctly but with so-so form and/ or fall, you’ll still get your high D scores.

I wish Simone had just competed, toned down her routine and lost like a good sport. Now Suni will always have an asterisk next to her name and the Biles loons will never let any of the other gymnasts who competed and won have closure. They are like a weird combo of sore winners AND sore losers.

very true but without her HUGE error on her dismount she would have qualified 1st or 2nd(most likely 2nd though)
by Anonymous | reply 320 | August 4, 2021 5:40 PM |
I see your point R317 but wouldn't everyone have been upset with her for watering down the content, and possibly losing the gold because of that? It was just a no-win situation. From all I'm hearing about her attitude coming into the games, she never should have been in Tokyo - was saying all year (longer?) that she just wanted this to be over.
by Anonymous | reply 321 | August 4, 2021 7:05 PM |
I think Simone has proven herself to be a champion, even as someone who dislikes her style of gymnastics and thinks she’s benefited from current scoring system I have to give her props for being a great champion. In retrospect she shouldn’t have been on the team this Olympics, her just wasn’t into it physically or psychologically. She’s accomplished so much in her life, hopefully she takes time off before resuming next stage in her career. We should celebrate her accomplishments in a wonderful career, instead of dumbfuck celebrity wannabe/ influencers who have zero talent. Bravo Simone, you may not be my style of gymnast but you earned your accolades.
by Anonymous | reply 322 | August 4, 2021 7:30 PM |
Exactly, R322... and by putting herself on the team, despite not being physically or psychologically ready... and "wanting it to just be over...."
She seflishly took a spot from someone else who worked heard than she did and wanted to be there.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | August 4, 2021 8:33 PM |
R320, but she had the error Blanche, she did!
And she definitely wouldn't have placed first in Quals, even if she did a flawless routine. Guan Chen Chen's 6.9 D-Score, effectively shut that shit down. Essentially, Chen's routine did to Simone what Simone's routines have done to others.
Further, people really need to stop with this narrative of, "if Simone hit, nobody else could win..." bullshit. She didn't hit, that's that. People can't keep using her PAST success to claim she'd beat everyone now, "IF she only would have hit," or "IF she had competed.."
That's basically like saying, "Simone Biles would never win anything if she were somehow, magically, competing against Daniela Silivas, at the top of her Game... if Silivas didn't have to compete compulsories... and trained on new, better, equipment!"
by Anonymous | reply 324 | August 4, 2021 8:39 PM |
I forgot to finish and sign my post at R324...
It's also like saying Simone would never win against the greatest, Gina Gogean, if Gina were competing today.

Yep, Amy Chow is the only non-nutjob out of the bunch, and the most accomplished outside of gymnastics.
Back to the CoP, I guess they're never going to ban the Prudonova vault the same way that they banned the Thomas salto for women. Shushunova used to do Thomas salto regularly in her floor routines. For newbies who keep insisting that gymnasts today like Biles are more athletic, let me remind you that the tumbling skills are pretty much the same today but done on springier floor and better equipment. Some elements that are now considered so difficult and dangerous that they were banned or strongly discouraged like the Prudonova vault.

I didn't know about Borden being a Trumpster, but I guess I'm not surprised. I don't know know much about what Jaycie Phelps is/isn't up to (last I heard she was a big pothead). Did she lose her chill?
KKKerri Strug is a Republican. She presented with Mary Poo Retton at the Republican National Convention some years back.
Amy is the most professionally accomplished, laidback, and non-attentionwhore-y of the bunch. She probably looks at all her teammates and thinks -- "These bitches be cray."

Chances Biles does the Paris Olympics.
I say, right now, under 50%.
I really have enjoyed her dominance over that last 8 years. I realize it could get boring but at least she was American. I route for Team USA 90% of the time.
by Anonymous | reply 361 | August 5, 2021 8:35 PM |
R361, Hmm, she's 24 now so she will be 27 for Paris. At 19 years old she was already the oldest gymnast to win the all-around aside from mostly Soviet gymnasts (which was a different era). Athletes age like dog years professionally so that would be 'old' as a gymnast but I think she has the talent for sure to still win medals. Vanessa Ferrari has just got her first Olympic medal at the age of 30.
Whether Biles has the drive and motivation still is another thing. I think that what happened at Tokyo suggests that's an issue. She has lots of money, a nice big house. It must get harder to put yourself through that kinds of gruelling training as time goes on especially if you've already got the medals and money. However, some athletes take a break, find that the sport is the only thing they really know and then they try to make a come back so that wouldn't surprise me either.

Amy Chow is the only one of the Mag 7 that has a life completely unattached to Gymnastics. The rest of her teammates.. those Olympics make up the trajectory and foundation of their entire lives. To Amy Chow it was basically some random thing she did one summer.. like summer camp.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | August 5, 2021 9:04 PM |
^ some random thing she did one summer and has only ever thought about when her teammates beg her to join in on some interview commemorating the anniversary of an event she doesn't really care that much about.
by Anonymous | reply 366 | August 5, 2021 9:05 PM |
People also have to understand that being dominant in the sport of gymnastics is often down to physique and luck. Both contribute to staying consistently at the top. Biles and Khorkina come to mind, both were blessed with physiques that remained relatively free from injuries. That and conditioning went a long way to allow for elite level training and competition. Most great gymnasts with major international medals to their name are at top maybe 6-7 years at most before serious injuries and effects of old injuries start making it impossible to remain top contenders. Gymnasts like Elena Zamolodchikova and Cheng Fei come to mind.
Biles is blessed with a compact, muscular physique, her career hasn’t up to this point been plagued by injuries. That contributed to longevity in the sport. I think if she wishes to continue she could physically do it. But I think she’s done, there’s nothing left to prove and she probably wants to live normal life with boyfriend and make money from her celebrity status.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | August 5, 2021 9:16 PM |
24-25 seems to be the age when the wear and tear plus the psychological grind of training take their tolls. Khorkina was ancient at age 25 at the 2004 Athens games and it was obvious even with overscoring that her best days were past her.
by Anonymous | reply 368 | August 5, 2021 9:22 PM |
I think Biles will be in Paris as a vault and floor specialist (maybe beam as well) she just loves the spotlight.
by Anonymous | reply 369 | August 5, 2021 9:27 PM |
I think Dawes has a case of the Dommies (Moceanu).
Moceanu has completely absolved her abusive father of all the disgusting things he did by transferring her anger and accusations at Bela. Not that Bela is innocent, but the about face Moceanu did re: her father is strange... and most of it is because she's gullible and believing her parents when they said none of the abuse at their hadns was THEIR fault but everyone else's.
Dominque Dawes' mother's ambivalence and abuse towards her was well documented in countless fluff pieces that NBC aired. I'd bet she's misplacing the anger and blame on to Kelli HIll.
Unless someone else has stories of other people complaining about how awful and abusive Kelli is/was.
by Anonymous | reply 370 | August 5, 2021 9:27 PM |
R369, USA Gymnastics woudl have to let her go... they won't.
by Anonymous | reply 371 | August 5, 2021 9:28 PM |
The avg age for gymnasts is climbing. With better physical care from sports medicine and an overall better ability to keep athletes safe, Biles could easily compete and be the favorite for Paris. Easily. There is no one else who comes close when she’s on mental. That will be the main issue. Does she want it? Aly came back hungrier and better than ever after London to grab the AA Silver. If Biles wants it, it will be hers.
She hates bars so that may be the one area she decides she doesn’t want to work on repeating her AA Gold from Rio.

I do wish they were lower the age to 14 again but at the minimum, they need to allow gymnasts who will be age eligible for the olympics compete in the qualifying meet to the olympics. For example, if a gymnast will be 16 by the end of 2024, they should be able to compete at the 2023 worlds
by Anonymous | reply 386 | August 6, 2021 12:24 AM |
Age eligibility rules increasing to 16 really screwed the '97-00 quad, if I remember correctly. Girls who were 15 in 1997 couldn't compete at a major Worlds until two years later in 1999! The 1982-1983 girls (my age peers, ha) were screwed.
By contrast, Moceanu was allowed to compete in Atlanta at 14 (she was turning 15) later that year in '96.

the gymnasts of the 97-00 quad would look pretty good at nationals but then shat the bed at worlds... it's like they peaked too early. That quad also was screwed out of a worlds in 98 where we could have had Atler as a double gold medalist and Domi M an AA medalist(possibly gold)

Simone definitely had a change in attitude over the last season. She didn’t seem to be enjoying herself. I do blame the boyfriend. I believe her when she says she wasn’t able to perform after Qualifications. She would have cost the team the Silver they won.

The Karolyi's didn't give two shits about what Shannon was doing in 92-95, since they weren't involved in the sport. And Shannon stopped "dominating" (ie, Judges stopped overscoring her and moved on to someone else) after 94.
What Bela probably hated about Shannon, aside from her being a crybaby, is how the USGF bent over backwards to screw Kim over at Trials, in order to prop Shannon's scrunchie up.
by Anonymous | reply 467 | August 8, 2021 1:03 AM |
R457, you mean by doing it Bela's way... since Nunno basically ripped his program off him, unsucessfully, actually.
Shannon would have been a champion training anywhere, except the Karolyi's.
It's telling that Nunno couldn't produce even another Regional champion.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | August 8, 2021 1:05 AM |
R464, Kim did compete in the AA, but went out bounds on her first event and it was over for her... because unlike fake Champions today, you couldn't go out of bounds and still win back then.
Kim had the highest optionals score during the Team AA final, so she very well could have won. I persoanlly don't think the judges were going to give it to her anyway. I think they had decided Pre-Barcelaona that they were moving on to the #2s on the team.
by Anonymous | reply 469 | August 8, 2021 1:09 AM |
For Kim, it was less mental pressure to win than it was her stress fracture which she kept super quiet about.
It's fascinating that the Karolyi's were so good at training their athletes but always did a shit job at timing them to peak at the right times as well as managing their injuries. Every single one of their "contenders," were injured with a stress fracture at the Olympics, Mary Lou, Kim, and Moceanu.

R478 she was not overscored, at least not as much as the Russians. She did dominate 92-96. She had injuries in 95. She had injuries in 94. She was the top scorer after compulsories, team finals, and first day of the AA. She had one stumble or she very well could have won Gold in the AA in 96. She got her individual gold there and was instrumental in the team Gold.
by Anonymous | reply 488 | August 8, 2021 9:23 PM |
Again, delusional. If you don't see some of her scores from even the 92 Olympics as having been overscored? Then there's no hope. And you don't dominate if you don't win. She didn't win from 94-96.

R488, while you're correct that Miller was important for team gold and she was the top American after compulsories, the overall top scorer at Atlanta after compulsories was Podkopayeva, and Dawes provided the highest optional score for the Americans in Team Finals.
I would argue that Miller was beyond her gymn. prime after 1994 (growth spurt and burnout), and while the AA was stacked with many talented gymnasts, the medal contenders were probably Podkopayeva, Huilan (headcase), Amanar, Dawes (headcase).
Also, the Romanians were truly overscored in this era. Their bars scores were a joke. And I count many Romanians as some of my all-time faves.

I'd agree with that list, except I would say the medal contenders were:
Podkopayeva, Huilan, Amanar, Dawes, Kochetkova, Khorkina, Milosovici, and Gogean.
Those are who actually could have medaled. Realistically though, the ones the FIG was going to allow to medal: Milo was a carry over favorite and Gogean, obviously they jizzed every time she ever set foot on any apparatus.
Podkopayeva, Amanar, Milo, Gogean, Kochetkova, Khorkina.
by Anonymous | reply 496 | August 8, 2021 9:49 PM |
It's funny though looking at the list of All-Arounders from 96, while it was a deep field, Podkopayeva really had no competition. As long as she stayed on all four events, they were going to hand it to her, which they did.
They'd never let Huilan win Gold, even if she hit everything perfectly. Hell, she basically did, only had one step out, and that was enough to deny her a medal at all. Clearly they didn't want her on the podium. Milo was already barely hanging in there and she was never the type of gymnast they would put on top of the podium. Gogean, while they loved her, they also couldn't make AA Champion as she was mostly a B-player. Amanar was too young and new for them to reward her.
I don't think Gymnastics was diverse enough to give the top spot to Dawes either back then. Even if she hit all four events, they would have placed her at best, second to Lilia.

The list above illustrates what a lie the whole, "Shannon won compulsories/optionals" after the Team Finals.
Not only were Shannon's scores not in the lead after Team Finals, she did NOT win the Compulsory round, Lilia did.
The optional winner was Simona Amanar. Interestingly enough, if Moceanu had landed one of her vaults, she would have come at least second, after Amanar, in the optional round and placed at least third, just after Shanon, by 5/100 of a point, in the combined totals. That's only consider if Dominique would only have scored .5 more for not falling. More than likely she would have made above a 9.7 on vault, and would have placed above Shannon.
If Mo Huilan had not made the two errors she made during the team competition, she would have tied Podkopayeva's Optional scores exactly.
by Anonymous | reply 502 | August 8, 2021 10:48 PM |

Amanar was still rather enjoyable in 1996. It's amazing to see the deterioration of her bars from '96 to '00. Her compulsory UB set was one of the better ones.
by Anonymous | reply 504 | August 8, 2021 10:59 PM |
R504, I believe that's because she was relatively new to the Senior Team. It happens like that a lot to the Romanians. As Juniors they actually had difficulty and unique skills, which they would retain through out about the first year on the Senior National Team. After that, they go through re-programming, and become the robots that they spend the rest of their careers competing as. Even Gogean was much more enjoyable in her first year. But, the Romanian Federation knew what they were doing.. they won countless medals with their bland ass, boring as shit, does the bare miminum, athletes.

R506, it's hard to believe that the 1995-1997 Zombie Gogean was the same gymnast who was throwing counter-kims on bars in '91. Belu/Bitang really did suck the life out of her. Plus that scary beam fall really did traumatize her.
Bitch could stick dismounts and landings though. No lunges, hops, or steps.

Proves Shannon was a contender. The same Shannon hater posts over and over. Shannon had a stumble or she would have medaled in the AA.
Watch the re-play of the AA in 96. Listen to what the announcers say about Shannon’s previous scores.
Shannon had so many injuries after 94. She still was the reason her team (also very deep) won Team Gold and then she was beam champion.

by Anonymous | reply 511 | August 8, 2021 11:38 PM |
Not gonna acknowledge the repeated lying about how Shannon placed first in compulsories and optionals and the "first night," of AA?
Solely counting her optionals from the Team competition she barely comes in fifth, and that's with her on her complete A game.
Shannon was never going to medal in the AA, unless five other gymnasts fell all over the place. Especially with that floor routine. Even SHE questions why they thought that routine was a good idea when she only successfully landed the double layout once.
That isn't HATE to Shannon, it's facts.
by Anonymous | reply 512 | August 8, 2021 11:53 PM |
And Shannon wasn't the "reason" the US Team won Gold. That team wasn't a team that revolved around her. That Team had the perfect storm of athletes without that exact mix, more than likely Team USA would not have won Gold. Shannon need those team Members as much as they needed her. Shannon's scores were not on average higher or even mostly higher than the rest of her teammates.

If you replace Shannon's score on floor with her score from the Team Competition, Shannon still only comes in 7th in the AA competition.
by Anonymous | reply 517 | August 9, 2021 12:14 AM |
yeah, Shannon was not her best on FX because of her hip injury. I still don't understand why she just didn't do a whip to fullin for a mount instead of the double layout but she hadn't trained it in over a year(I think). It was a pass she competed for years but I guess she couldn't do it(or Nunno didn't think of it)
by Anonymous | reply 518 | August 9, 2021 12:19 AM |
R518, people have brought that question up to her and she said she didn't compete it because she hadn't been training it and it was one of those things that you don't change your pass because that's not what you've been training...
And they wanted to prove she could do it but... they never really did.
by Anonymous | reply 519 | August 9, 2021 12:22 AM |
Miller was not winning the Atlanta AA without serious help from others faltering. The strength of her compulsory scoring was not going to help her there.
by Anonymous | reply 520 | August 9, 2021 12:35 AM |
Shannon was leading or second after two rounds in the AA. If she had a more appropriate FX, she absolutely could have medaled.
Also, it’s true the announcers say she was the top scorer coming into the AA.
by Anonymous | reply 521 | August 9, 2021 12:59 AM |
They might have said that... doesn't mean it's true. You can see the scores yourself... she was not the top qualifier going into the AA. She may have been the TOP AMERICAN, but that doesn't mean anything. Especially considering 3 of her teammates had falls or errors.
Leading after x rounds of a competition doesn't mean you're going to win or that you have a shot to medal. It means you more than likely competed on your two better events while others hadn't.
Ask Li Li who led after 93 Worlds!
Would Shannon have had a better shot at the podium if she didn't have that awful Double Layout? Probably, but she still would have needed help from the Romanians and Mo Huilan to fuck up. Lucky for her, Mo always gave you an 80% chance she would.

r521
can you post the clip of them saying that?
by Anonymous | reply 523 | August 9, 2021 1:20 AM |
Gymnastics is ALWAYS about who fucks up more than who is more on.
by Anonymous | reply 524 | August 9, 2021 1:20 AM |
Shannon could have medaled, even gold, but she was too injured. Despite that, she did incredible.
by Anonymous | reply 525 | August 9, 2021 1:22 AM |
R524, hah, no it isn't!
by Anonymous | reply 526 | August 9, 2021 1:31 AM |
Oh, is that what we're going with?
Awesome.
I would have kicked Shannon's ass all over the floor if I wasn't injured!

R526 Biles has excellent execution. Fact.
Miller is one of the greatest.
by Anonymous | reply 528 | August 9, 2021 1:37 AM |
ONE of the greatest... soon to be forgotten.

We can all agree NBC did the worst coverage to date. Just terrible. I miss Bob Costas.

I thought this thread was about ME??
by Anonymous | reply 536 | August 9, 2021 6:22 AM |
It initially was, Simone at R536, but the crazy cunt Shannon attempted suicide after you tied her medal tally. She tried to hang herself with the BB gold from Atlanta but ended up breaking that, so technically she now has one medal less than you.
She then tried it using one of Steve's old, used condoms (she has saved them all) but that broke too and she has now started to endlessly write, "I finished first in qualification. USA won the team gold only because of me. I dominated between 92 and 98. Take away the minor mistake on FX and I would of won the Atlanta AA."
(Yes, I know. Oh, dear. Would have, not would of, but you know, you can take the hick out of Oklahoma but....)

Was Carrie Bradshaw bitching about Shannon Miller when she kept screaming "sc-RUNCH-ie" in that SATC episode?
by Anonymous | reply 539 | August 9, 2021 7:13 AM |
Of course, R539, because I am a Pop Culture ICON that sends TRENDS!
by Anonymous | reply 540 | August 9, 2021 7:53 PM |
R536, I think it says something about the state of the sport that we've been arguing about '90s gymnastics results for the last third of this thread..
by Anonymous | reply 541 | August 9, 2021 8:09 PM |
It says something that in all of the Gymnastics threads... it always mostly veers off into discusison about the late 80s-late 90s gymnasts. That was obviously the pinnacle of the sport.
Also to be noted that the majority of posts end up talking about how great Gina Gogean was and how she was everyone's favorite.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | August 9, 2021 8:18 PM |
Suddenly when Americans became dominant is when our non-American posters started hating gymnastics.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | August 9, 2021 11:28 PM |
R543, I'm American, and there have been lots of American gymnasts over the years who I like. Sadly, the ones I like best are rarely the ones who find the most international success (i.e. Shantessa Pama, Michelle Campi). Dominique Dawes was my fave American gymnast and probably the most successful one. I had hopes for Jaycie Phelps and Vanessa Atler, but it wasn't meant to be. I enjoyed the much more regal Moceanu in 1998 vs. her cutesy Karolyi era. I really liked Courtney McCool in 2004 (excellent form, toe-point, extension) and thought it was sad that her Olympics was a letdown.
Sorry, not really a great fan of Mary Lou/Kim Zmeskal/Shawn Johnson/Carly Patterson. I liked Nastia's bars. I like how Simone pushes the difficulty envelope on FX/VT. As much as I bust her balls, I appreciated Miller from '91-92; not so much after '93. I always thought trickster Amy Chow (and her unique set of skills for the time) was cool.
I won't be negative and even get into my opinions about the truly eyesore gymnasts (i.e. Kristen Maloney, Aly Raisman, MyKayla Skinner).
by Anonymous | reply 544 | August 10, 2021 12:13 AM |
R543 Those posters always hated American gymnasts and it started with the little cunt Mary Poo Rotten, who can blame them ?
by Anonymous | reply 545 | August 10, 2021 12:16 AM |
I wonder what American gymnastics in the 90s would have looked like if the Soviet Bloc hadn't boycotted LA. Without the boycott the cunt Mary Loo Rotten would have managed a top 8 finish at best and then returned to West Virginia to her true calling: Crack and Jesus.
I guess lots of American girls were inspired by Mary Loo not only to take up gymnastics but also embrace her style of she-hulk truck driver tumbling. Maybe if the hideous Mary Poo had never become a star we would have been spared the likes of Kimbot Zoomeskal and that may have trickled down further to the later generations and spared us the hideousness of all the Mack trucks in leotards that were Shawn Johnson, Aly Raisman, Jordyn Wieber and Mckayla Maroney.
by Anonymous | reply 546 | August 10, 2021 7:11 AM |
Aly and McKayla were hot sluts and not stump she hulks though. Plus they seem cool.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | August 10, 2021 7:21 AM |
Sluts? You forgot to sign your post Gabby at R547.
by Anonymous | reply 548 | August 10, 2021 8:01 AM |
Wrong, R546, it would have still happened exactly as it happened.
Kim was already training at Bela's gym prior to Mary Lou winning in 84.
The US would still have gone on to lose Bronze in Seoul because of Rhonda, the 91 Worlds would still have been held in Indianapolis, and the FIG would have still awarded the Crown to a hometown, hero, which could only have been Kim Zmeskal.
And I'd still refuse to shake her hand.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | August 10, 2021 8:06 AM |
I liked that at least Gabby didn't pretend they were all BFFs who loved each other. She hated Aly and the other bottom feeders in the team and they hated her back.
by Anonymous | reply 550 | August 10, 2021 8:08 AM |
Svetlana at R549, I am glad you didn't shake Kimbot's hand. She was gifted an undeserving win and besides, who knows what kinds of diseases you might have picked up from shaking her filthy hand. By the way were her bug eyes and cartoon face scarier up close than they were on TV?
by Anonymous | reply 551 | August 10, 2021 8:12 AM |
What's actualy interesting though is if you think about Mary Lou Retton's influence on the US gymnastics program... it actually wasn't that big.
Mary Lou won in 1984... she didn't influence anyone on the 1988 or 1992 Games because those athletes, because of their ages, were already in gyms training.
The first generation of kids who would/could have been influenced by her, meaning, got into the gym because of watching her, would have been at the 1996 games. But her influence there was pretty much nonexistent becuase you had 4/7 members of the US team who were still competing from 1992, and in the gym before Mary Lou won. Amy Chow was also already in the gym before MLR, and only got into gymnastics by happenstance. Dominiqe was forced into gymnsatics because of her parents, not by any influence of Mary Lou Rotunda. The only one of the Mag 7 that would possibly have taken up the sport because of MLR was Jaycie.
The generation after that team, the 2000 squad, would mostly have been too young to have even watched the 84 Olympics... and the generation after that, probably hadn't been born yet so she didn't influence them.
So, basically, Mary Lou did shit for American gymnastics.

[quote] So, basically, Mary Lou did shit for American gymnastics .
Mary Poo did shit in her depends.
by Anonymous | reply 553 | August 10, 2021 8:42 AM |
I believe Mary Poo did influence some to get hideous dyke hairstyles, like Phoebe Mills, Kim Kelly, Kerri Strug, Amanda Borden etc.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | August 10, 2021 8:51 AM |
Even if the state of US gymnastics would have remained unchanged at least the Eastern Bloc participation preventing Braying Mare Loo from winning gold would have meant we would have been spared her hideous grin over the next three or four decades. The bitch would have returned to WVa instead of becoming the media presence that she did.

by Anonymous | reply 558 | August 10, 2021 9:45 AM |
Mary Lou would have absolutely won a medal, likely Gold. Some of you forget, it doesn’t matter what country the event is held in since these are INTERNATIONAL judges who always favor Russians and Romanians. Mary Lou had already beaten the Russians in an INTERNATIONAL competition or two BEFORE the Olympics.
Some of you loved your gymnasts anorexic. Others don’t. Who is the psycho saying Aly and MyKayla were Mack trucks? They were slender especially McKayla who had PERFECT form.
Fuck that ho ButtholeSky. What a cunt to refuse to shake hands with Kim. I’m sure the Belarusian STD was just angry she was a moose in a leotard who looked worse next to pixie Kim.
Plus, Shannon was on her way to end the dominance of the old guard.

Kindly shut the fuck up and sit back down. IM the one that didn't shake her hand first because I'm a bad ass bitch. Learned it from Marta.
And Shannon wasn't on her way to do shit... but keep posting that bullshit about her "leading the AA after compulsories and AA in Atlanta, bullshit." Shannon never beat the Former Soviets at shit like I did... three motherfucking times.

R556 Kirstie to be fair most desperate men forget all about you a few seconds after they pull out of your hairy loose snatch... here’s some nostramdumbass shit for giggles.

Stupid, bitch R561. Like after all my eating disorders I could ever grow hair on my snatch.

Why didn’t Kim shake her hand?
by Anonymous | reply 563 | August 10, 2021 9:42 PM |
R563, because she's a CUNT.
But she claims it's because she got confused during vault ceremonies. Being a useless American, she says she wasn't used to being involved in a lineup if you didn't middle. Because there wer ties, and so many people, she CLAIMS she got confused and didn't know whose hand she already shook, etc. and therefore "skipped," The Goddess of Gymnastics.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | August 10, 2021 9:48 PM |

You meanButthokesky? The moose of gymnastics?
by Anonymous | reply 566 | August 10, 2021 9:53 PM |
At least Svetlana has gold medals from both the Olympics and the Worlds. The only Olympic highlights Kimbot has are memories of falling off the beam and landing out of bounds on the FX. And one measly bronze and even that a team medal. In terms of the hype surrounding a gymnast relative to her actual success at the Olympics, Kimbot must rate as one of the biggest flops of all time.
by Anonymous | reply 567 | August 11, 2021 6:41 AM |
R567 Kimbot might be a flop in the Olympics, but she isn’t the MOOSE of gymnastics.
by Anonymous | reply 568 | August 11, 2021 11:36 AM |
I feel sorry for the poor balance beam and the floor when I think of Kim jumping up and down on them in the true Kimbot truck-like style. This is a very flattering picture though. Her eyes don't look as bug-like in this and the photo captures her at her most svelte period (Barcelona 92).
by Anonymous | reply 569 | August 11, 2021 2:20 PM |
My favorite Boginskaya moment, by far, was when she mocked Kerri Strug's atrocious floor choreography!

by Anonymous | reply 572 | August 12, 2021 1:51 PM |
R572, her American Cup win! Which apparently convinced her she had a legit shot at an AA medal. Remember how sulky she was about not being able to compete because of her injury?
by Anonymous | reply 573 | August 13, 2021 3:46 PM |
R573
I think that mags more to do with history repeating itself as the same thing happened in Barcelona but to be fair she would never have even been in the third position if others hadn’t fallen. She did get her shot in the AA in 95 and did not dazzle anyone
by Anonymous | reply 574 | August 13, 2021 4:22 PM |
R573, ok, yeah, the legendary competition that is the American Cup. Is it more prestigious than the Chunichi Cup that Mary Loo Rotten's fanatics keep bringing up to explain why she would have won the Los Angeles AA gold even without the boycott?
by Anonymous | reply 575 | August 13, 2021 8:23 PM |
People don't call it the scAm Cup for no reason.
