He was on Stargate: Atlantis for a few years before he booked GoT. While I'm sure he wasn't making loads of money, he at least had a steady paycheck during that time. He said he was in debt after GoTs because that money ran out, the show wasn't the hit it would become yet and he was killed off. He has had a couple of other shows that lasted a season or two but right now he's on Apple TV's, "See" with Alfre Woodard which got renewed.
