Hawaii in December

Any recommendations on what to do? Where to stay

by Anonymousreply 24August 2, 2021 12:37 AM

It's like the most expensive time to go to HI, so just keep that in mind. Car rentals in particular are shockingly expensive.

Not the White Lotus!

Honolulu?

I prefer quieter locations, but if you’re going to Honolulu, you have lots of options. I once stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which I loved. I had a room facing the ocean and would sit in the balcony in the morning with coffee. The beach there is used exclusively by hotel guests, so isn’t crowded. I also stayed at a vrbo condo once, two blocks from the beach. It had free parking and a full kitchen, which was handy.

If you plan on eating in restaurants and won’t spend much time in your room, I suggest getting a room in one of the hotels away from the beach. Much cheaper.

Things to do-visit Pearl Harbor. Go through the museum there, which many tourists don’t do. It’s totally worth it. But go very early. It’s free but fills up very quickly.

Charter an afternoon excursion with this guy, and enjoy the scenery.

Stay away from burial grounds.

Go snorkeling at Hanauma Bay but you have to make reservations now.

Besides Pearl Harbor, there's also a WWII museum in Honolulu. I went (I'm not a beach person) and thought it was really cool.

I never thought about it before, does Hawaii even have seasons? Is December just as sunny and beautiful as July?

The guy linked at R10 is a total fucking nut.

Maui is a complete shit-show now, so I can only imagine what December will look like.

Honolulu is the most boring part of Hawaii. Why go there? It’s just a city

The Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design is just outside Honolulu. It’s Doris Duke’s old house that was turned into a museum after her death. I’ve never been, but it looks stunning. Go and report back for us!

R14, the article is only available to subscribers. What’s going on in Maui? Btw it’s my favorite place on the planet.

It's pretty amazing. Don't know if it's open now but in the past you would go to the Museum of Art in downtown and get taken there.

My partner and I went to Iolani Palace on a rainy day. It was interesting, but it was so small. The best part of that day was walking across the street to take a picture of the King Kamehaha statue. As I was taking a shot, a drunk woman popped out from behind the statue, screamed at us incoherently and threw her full cab of beer at me.

by Anonymousreply 19August 1, 2021 11:48 PM

^^^^^^^ Yes....an entire cab of beer. Glad it didn’t hit me.

🙀

OP- Stay HOME

by December we may be enduring another bout of Covid

by Anonymousreply 21August 2, 2021 12:04 AM

Hawaiians don't like white people and it has been like that for years. Don't know if it is still true, but there use to be a hierarchy there. Do you know that most if not all property is leasehold?

by Anonymousreply 22August 2, 2021 12:08 AM

There is certainly a segment of native hawaiins who resent all the haolies coming and ruining their homeland.

by Anonymousreply 23August 2, 2021 12:32 AM

Oahu sucks. Maui is so much better. I think Hawii is overrated and is where Americans with no imagination go.
