College towns with a conservative populace

Excluding the infamous Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA.

by Anonymousreply 84August 2, 2021 6:11 PM

Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC.

by Anonymousreply 1July 31, 2021 10:39 PM

[quote] College towns with a conservative populace

have the best dick

by Anonymousreply 2July 31, 2021 10:41 PM

Athens, GA and Oxford, MS, home to UGA and Ole Miss both fit the build.

by Anonymousreply 3July 31, 2021 10:45 PM

Lol.

I wonder why a bunch of conservatives chose a town called "Lynchburg" to establish their university?

by Anonymousreply 4August 1, 2021 12:33 AM

I disagree, r3. Athens , GA is very liberal.

by Anonymousreply 5August 1, 2021 12:36 AM

Knoxville, TN.

Clemson, SC.

Gainesville, FL.

by Anonymousreply 6August 1, 2021 12:38 AM

Colorado Springs, CO, home of the US Air Force Academy which has been a hotbed of conservatism for several decades.

by Anonymousreply 7August 1, 2021 12:40 AM

I was in Colorado Springs last summer to go to Pikes Peak. We were getting coffee downtown and suddenly a few dozen of the hottest specimens of man I've ever seen jogged by.

Go Air Force!

by Anonymousreply 8August 1, 2021 1:25 AM

How about Denton, TX and Harrisonburg, VA?

by Anonymousreply 9August 1, 2021 2:25 AM

Auburn, Alabama.

by Anonymousreply 10August 1, 2021 2:26 AM

So we're just naming Southern towns - no surprise there.

by Anonymousreply 11August 1, 2021 2:29 AM

Gainesville, FL is not conservative.

by Anonymousreply 12August 1, 2021 2:31 AM

Tuscaloosa Alabama

by Anonymousreply 13August 1, 2021 2:35 AM

Grove City, PA

by Anonymousreply 14August 1, 2021 3:12 AM

[quote] So we're just naming Southern towns - no surprise there.

As a Texan I can't argue with any of these. They are all terrible college towns. I'd add Waco.

What about wherever Wheaton and Hillsdale are? Bumfuck, Illinois or Michigan?

by Anonymousreply 15August 1, 2021 3:14 AM

Notre Dame. Indiana.

by Anonymousreply 16August 1, 2021 3:16 AM

Orono, Maine

by Anonymousreply 17August 1, 2021 3:17 AM

Notre Dame isn't a town, genius R16. And how conservative can South Bend be if they elected an out gay Democrat as mayor?

by Anonymousreply 18August 1, 2021 3:18 AM

Gainesville is kinda weird. It’s somewhat half liberal but a lot of very virulent hick types surround the place and some of the student and staff are likely conservative.

by Anonymousreply 19August 1, 2021 3:23 AM

Tulsa, OK--home of Oral Roberts U.

by Anonymousreply 20August 1, 2021 3:27 AM

Gainesville, no. Tallahassee (home of Florida State, alma mater of the beloved Burt Reynolds), yes.

by Anonymousreply 21August 1, 2021 3:52 AM

I lived in Gainesville when it went for Dukakis, and there was a huge Unitarian Church there.

But you're right, R19, it's surrounded by the cast of "Deliverance"

by Anonymousreply 22August 1, 2021 3:55 AM

Kearney, Nebraska

by Anonymousreply 23August 1, 2021 3:58 AM

[quote] I lived in Gainesville when it went for Dukakis,

That was thirty-three years ago.

[quote] Athens, GA

The original home of bands like R.E.M. and the B-52's? I don't think so. Clarke County, where Athens is located, went 70% for Biden over Trump. It's Athens and Atlanta that helped Georgia finally go blue in 2020.

by Anonymousreply 26August 1, 2021 4:00 AM

Stillwater, OK

by Anonymousreply 27August 1, 2021 4:04 AM

R24, my dear old homies came through in 2016:

Alachua County (Gainesville/University of Florida, with 52,000 students);

Biden: 62.9% - about 90,000;

Trump: 35.7% - about 51,000.

by Anonymousreply 28August 1, 2021 4:05 AM

* Oops I mean 2020. Think my arteries done froze.

by Anonymousreply 29August 1, 2021 4:06 AM

29 comments and no one has mentioned Lubbock TX, as ugly as the name implies, and home of Texas Tech, where idiots struggle with 6th grade texts.

by Anonymousreply 30August 1, 2021 4:08 AM

Muncie, IN

by Anonymousreply 31August 1, 2021 4:08 AM

OK so I'll do 2016 - Alachua (Gainesville):

Hillary 59% - Trump 36.4 - Johnson 3.2 - Stein 1.2.

by Anonymousreply 32August 1, 2021 4:09 AM

R18 Notre Dame is a census-designated place[4] north of the city of South Bend in St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It includes the campuses of three colleges: the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary's College, and Holy Cross College. Notre Dame is split between Clay and Portage Townships. As of the 2020 census, its population was 6,342

What is Charlottesville VA like politically.

UVA is there, alma mater of our own Clarice Starling. It's not a charm school you know.

by Anonymousreply 34August 1, 2021 4:23 AM

Thank you r33. R34 Charlottesville is very liberal. There is a large subculture of transient homeless there. The community is very supportive of them and offer lots of resources.

by Anonymousreply 35August 1, 2021 4:34 AM

Athens, GA isn’t that conservative.

by Anonymousreply 36August 1, 2021 4:35 AM

In other words, R35, they are enablers.

by Anonymousreply 37August 1, 2021 4:38 AM

San Luis Obispo (home of Cal Poly) is surprisingly conservative, though not compared to some places on this list.

by Anonymousreply 38August 1, 2021 4:39 AM

Conservatives in California are more liberal than liberals in the South.

by Anonymousreply 39August 1, 2021 4:41 AM

There are several conservative college towns in upstate New York, like Allegany, Oswega, and Jamestown (yes Lucy's place).

by Anonymousreply 40August 1, 2021 4:42 AM

Burlington, Vermont

by Anonymousreply 42August 1, 2021 4:44 AM

Most colleges in Texas that aren't located in one of the big cities are going to be in conservative towns: College Station, Nacogdoches, Commerce, Canyon, Alpine, Stephenville, Waco, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, Abilene, Odessa, San Angelo, Huntsville, Beaumont. That's the nature of Texas small towns.

by Anonymousreply 43August 1, 2021 4:50 AM

Then I guess they were not dumb enough to fall for postmodernism.

Burlington, Vermont isn't conservative! The home of Ben and Jerry's? It went about 76% for Biden in 2020.

by Anonymousreply 46August 1, 2021 6:15 AM

Allegheny College is in PA not NY. If you mean Allegany/Olean NY and St Bonaventure, it’s not particularly conservative.

Don’t know if Oswego is particularly conservative. A friend of mine lives there and has never mentioned it.

Jamestown has no college other than a small community college and by no means has anyone ever thought of it as a college town. And it’s a city with a decent size black population and not particularly conservative. Pretty sure it leans Democratic.

by Anonymousreply 47August 1, 2021 2:02 PM

Knoxville is more of an actual city, than a "college town"

It also has a female Democrat for mayor although it did vote for Trump and other Republicans (Congress, state legislature)

by Anonymousreply 48August 1, 2021 2:11 PM

R47, you might want to look at all those town's voting records, that's what I'm going by when I said "conservative". Allegany/Olean, Oswega, Jamestown all when for Trump between 57% and 63%.

Now, as far as them being considered "college towns" when their colleges may not be that well-known, well, that is a fair point.

by Anonymousreply 49August 1, 2021 3:27 PM

What are you babbling about, R44?

by Anonymousreply 50August 1, 2021 3:31 PM

Davis, California

by Anonymousreply 51August 1, 2021 4:10 PM

OP, why ask this question? Most of us want to avoid conservative, asshead cities.

by Anonymousreply 52August 1, 2021 4:12 PM

Tuscaloosa and Auburn are generally liberal compared with the rest of Alabama.

by Anonymousreply 53August 1, 2021 4:18 PM

Speaking of Gainesville, FL, here's a song by that name by Linda Ronstadt that many people haven't heard. It's one of my favorite songs she's ever sung.

Opposing Israel is a deplorable, reactionary, and racist position.

by Anonymousreply 57August 1, 2021 5:05 PM

Norman, Oklahoma was much more conservative than I thought it would be.

by Anonymousreply 58August 1, 2021 5:06 PM

What's Bloomington, Indiana like?

by Anonymousreply 59August 1, 2021 5:46 PM

R4, Lynchburg was named after the region's founding family, who included a judge infamous for passing down harsh sentences, including hanging, during colonial times. Thus giving rise to the term "lynch" to mean a cruel execution without due process.

by Anonymousreply 60August 1, 2021 5:46 PM

[quote] Norman, Oklahoma was much more conservative than I thought it would be.

You mean compared to the rest of Oklahoma? That should not have surprised you.

by Anonymousreply 61August 1, 2021 5:48 PM

I thought Madison, WI was liberal...as well as Bloomington, Indiana

by Anonymousreply 62August 1, 2021 5:56 PM

Bloomington has a big town/gown split. The nearest towns of any size are Klan enclaves.

by Anonymousreply 63August 1, 2021 5:58 PM

Madison, WI is EXTREMELY liberal. Not one Republican or conservative holds any city office and the mayor is an out lesbian. Even the cops are liberal in Madison

by Anonymousreply 64August 1, 2021 6:53 PM

Provo, Utah.

by Anonymousreply 65August 1, 2021 7:07 PM

Eugene, Oregon

by Anonymousreply 66August 1, 2021 7:23 PM

Madison’s liberalness is probably because most of the population are New Yorkers, Western hippies, and Europeans. Native Wisconsans seem a lot more conservative.

How about Decatur and Chaimpaign-Urbana, IL? Don’t know much about them.

by Anonymousreply 67August 1, 2021 9:25 PM

Tucson, AZ.

Metro area of +1 million but still feels like a town. Liberal around the University of Arizona but has a solidly conservative populace throughout.

A true purple birthmark of a city.

by Anonymousreply 68August 1, 2021 9:48 PM

I know a lot of current UC students and live a few hours away. Cincinnati is just barely liberal in national elections and the few locally elected democrats have all been indicted for fraud, including novelist Curtis Sittenfeld's brother, who I was hoping would go far.

by Anonymousreply 69August 1, 2021 10:30 PM

R68 -- You are quite wrong. Tucson voted quite convincingly for Biden in Pima County -- Trump got less than 40 percent of the vote.

by Anonymousreply 70August 1, 2021 11:16 PM

R70 Tucson is a huge snowbird destination with many of the snowbirds being conservative. Many of them cast their votes elsewhere. It is definitely very conservative in parts. I know because I live in Tucson.

by Anonymousreply 71August 1, 2021 11:39 PM

R18 Notre Dame, Indiana is indeed a town.

by Anonymousreply 73August 1, 2021 11:47 PM

Tucson is not conservative overall. See election results

by Anonymousreply 74August 1, 2021 11:51 PM

R74 YES - I am aware that Tucson is not OVERALL conservative that is why I called it PURPLE.

I am simply referring to the fact that when voting season rolls around there still may be many votes that aren't exactly indicative of the true population OVERALL because the population is transient. Hope there isn't too much nuance in that statement for you.

To reiterate - TUCSON IS NOT ALL CONSERVATIVE.

by Anonymousreply 75August 1, 2021 11:59 PM

College Park, Maryland

by Anonymousreply 76August 2, 2021 2:23 AM

[quote]Madison’s liberalness is probably because most of the population are New Yorkers, Western hippies, and Europeans. Native Wisconsans seem a lot more conservative.

Not even close. Madison and Wisconsin in general have a long history of liberalism. They were voting for socialists in the early 1900s!

by Anonymousreply 78August 2, 2021 2:47 AM

Greenville, NC, home to East Carolina University, a large regional state college. It's the most depressing college town I've ever seen, although it's rapidly growing into a city now.

Greenville should not be confused with Greensboro, also in North Carolina, which is much larger and quite liberal and home to 5 colleges.

There's another Greenville in South Carolina which is the most conservative of all.

by Anonymousreply 79August 2, 2021 2:59 AM

Greenville is in Pitt County. Biden won Pitt County with 54% of the vote. It’s not a conservative county

by Anonymousreply 80August 2, 2021 3:09 AM

I still say Colorado Springs. Even though the wider country doesn’t think ‘Air Force Academy’ when they hear the name, like Annapolis or West Point, the city itself leads with the Academy first, US Olympics second, and Focus on the Family third.

I believe they have moderated their municipal politics in the past few years but at one point they had defunded the municipal services to such an extent that they had to beg citizens to maintain the city parks!

The city of Greenville SC itself is not that conservative anymore - but the suburbs are. This NY Times by precinct link shows Greenville as mostly blue.

Hamilton College sits in a tiny village but the surrounding area is standard upstate New York which might as well be Kentucky. (They fly Conferate flags up there. )
