Lol.
I wonder why a bunch of conservatives chose a town called "Lynchburg" to establish their university?

I disagree, r3. Athens , GA is very liberal.

I was in Colorado Springs last summer to go to Pikes Peak. We were getting coffee downtown and suddenly a few dozen of the hottest specimens of man I've ever seen jogged by.
Go Air Force!

Gainesville is kinda weird. It’s somewhat half liberal but a lot of very virulent hick types surround the place and some of the student and staff are likely conservative.

R18 Notre Dame is a census-designated place[4] north of the city of South Bend in St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It includes the campuses of three colleges: the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary's College, and Holy Cross College. Notre Dame is split between Clay and Portage Townships. As of the 2020 census, its population was 6,342

Most colleges in Texas that aren't located in one of the big cities are going to be in conservative towns: College Station, Nacogdoches, Commerce, Canyon, Alpine, Stephenville, Waco, Lubbock, Wichita Falls, Abilene, Odessa, San Angelo, Huntsville, Beaumont. That's the nature of Texas small towns.

Allegheny College is in PA not NY. If you mean Allegany/Olean NY and St Bonaventure, it’s not particularly conservative.
Don’t know if Oswego is particularly conservative. A friend of mine lives there and has never mentioned it.
Jamestown has no college other than a small community college and by no means has anyone ever thought of it as a college town. And it’s a city with a decent size black population and not particularly conservative. Pretty sure it leans Democratic.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 1, 2021 2:02 PM |
Knoxville is more of an actual city, than a "college town"
It also has a female Democrat for mayor although it did vote for Trump and other Republicans (Congress, state legislature)
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 1, 2021 2:11 PM |
R47, you might want to look at all those town's voting records, that's what I'm going by when I said "conservative". Allegany/Olean, Oswega, Jamestown all when for Trump between 57% and 63%.
Now, as far as them being considered "college towns" when their colleges may not be that well-known, well, that is a fair point.

by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 1, 2021 5:46 PM |
R4, Lynchburg was named after the region's founding family, who included a judge infamous for passing down harsh sentences, including hanging, during colonial times. Thus giving rise to the term "lynch" to mean a cruel execution without due process.

Madison’s liberalness is probably because most of the population are New Yorkers, Western hippies, and Europeans. Native Wisconsans seem a lot more conservative.
How about Decatur and Chaimpaign-Urbana, IL? Don’t know much about them.

Metro area of +1 million but still feels like a town. Liberal around the University of Arizona but has a solidly conservative populace throughout.
A true purple birthmark of a city.

I know a lot of current UC students and live a few hours away. Cincinnati is just barely liberal in national elections and the few locally elected democrats have all been indicted for fraud, including novelist Curtis Sittenfeld's brother, who I was hoping would go far.

by Anonymous | reply 74 | August 1, 2021 11:51 PM |
R74 YES - I am aware that Tucson is not OVERALL conservative that is why I called it PURPLE.
I am simply referring to the fact that when voting season rolls around there still may be many votes that aren't exactly indicative of the true population OVERALL because the population is transient. Hope there isn't too much nuance in that statement for you.
To reiterate - TUCSON IS NOT ALL CONSERVATIVE.

Not even close. Madison and Wisconsin in general have a long history of liberalism. They were voting for socialists in the early 1900s!

Greenville, NC, home to East Carolina University, a large regional state college. It's the most depressing college town I've ever seen, although it's rapidly growing into a city now.
Greenville should not be confused with Greensboro, also in North Carolina, which is much larger and quite liberal and home to 5 colleges.
There's another Greenville in South Carolina which is the most conservative of all.

Greenville is in Pitt County. Biden won Pitt County with 54% of the vote. It’s not a conservative county

I still say Colorado Springs. Even though the wider country doesn’t think ‘Air Force Academy’ when they hear the name, like Annapolis or West Point, the city itself leads with the Academy first, US Olympics second, and Focus on the Family third.
I believe they have moderated their municipal politics in the past few years but at one point they had defunded the municipal services to such an extent that they had to beg citizens to maintain the city parks!
by Anonymous | reply 81 | August 2, 2021 3:57 AM |
