The char-broilin’ filled a niche deliciously, but alas not enough of one it seems….

I passed near one during a local business trip and had lunch. The food was simple but good and reasonably priced. I'd have returned if it hadn't been located so inconveniently out of the way.

I went into the one on 6th Ave. Greenwich Village. I felt sick and needed to eat something. I got a small container of mashed potatoes and the were DELICIOUS. I got some chicken to go. They were really good. I don’t eat fast food, but I made an exception for KR. It restaurant was plastered with smiling Kenny. PR head shots, movie stills, Kenny Kenny Kenny. Was surprised when they went out of business. So tasty!

If you enjoyed giving your $ over to the religious right like Pat Robertson which Kenny was a big fan of (appearing on his show The 700 Club numerous times) and yes since his death it's been revealed that this family values devoted husband had a girlfriend in every major touring city that he did despite being married at the time.

It was before the internet.

Was it like Boston Market or Chicken Out?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 1, 2021 1:48 AM |
More like a Rax or an Arby's

Too bad you can no longer eat it after smoking Willie Nelson‘s weed.

It was very good 0P - they had a chicken wrap, back when wraps were still kind of exotic, that was wonderful — the shredded chicken, cheese, lettuce & tomato had some kind of garlicky Italian dressing on it.

I liked it. Not exactly fine dining, but definitely better than its competitors.

Their BBQ chicken pita was sooo good and somewhat healthy. I used to have one by my work and loved to get one on lunch hour.

r8 it was like Boston Market but better
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 1, 2021 6:39 AM |
R5: It's not like he was Mormon like Gladys Knight. They probably get 10% of all the money from her chicken restaurant.
The rest went to this:

R16 Mormons today are more LGBT friendly than the rest of the religious right
so I don't know why you're trying to give Kenny Rogers a free pass on anything.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 6, 2021 1:42 AM |
No. I remember trying it just because of the Seinfeld episode and I was incredibly disappointed.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 6, 2021 1:46 AM |
We don't have a Kenny Rogers where I live.
Is there a fast food chicken restaurant that is comparable?
Like R20, I really got a craving for it after I watched the episode.

Im with R11 ,the wraps were divine. I found their chicken rather meh ,though. At that time I was heavily into Popeyes (remember when they were great?) .KFC had a tasty chicken wrap too. Damn,Im stoned and now craving some fried chicken.

They had a few in southern California back in 1997 and I ate there a couple times. I really liked it. Sorry it went out of business.

There used to be one UES I think on Second. It was so good! Like Boston market but much better. Not surprisingly, it was all about the sides.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 6, 2021 1:56 AM |
Ours closed and now so did our Boston Market. Boo.

[quote][R16] Mormons today are more LGBT friendly than the rest of the religious right
If that were true, then I would be getting banged by Ricky Schroder on a nightly basis.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 6, 2021 6:31 AM |
Mormons aren't pro-gay, they're just more likely now to turn their gay sons into heterosexual daughters rather than throwing them out. Either way, they are still being subjected to conversion therapy so this is NOT a win.

So was the chicken Caesar pita. That was my go-to. The cornbread muffins were really good too, moist and not too crumbly.
Whatever the reasons were for the chain going out of business, it wasn't because of the food. I'd still take it over any of the other chicken chains, any day.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 6, 2021 6:42 AM |
Looking it up on Wiki the chain is still alive and popular in Asia.
Despite the chain's end in the United States, Kenny Rogers Roasters continues to flourish in Asia under the ownership of Berjaya Group. An article published by Time.com in 2011[22] reported that Kenny Rogers Roasters had grown to almost 140 restaurants across Asia, with continued expansion in Malaysia,[23] the Philippines,[24] and more recently southern China.
In Malaysia, the Kenny Rogers Roasters chain of restaurants is developed and operated by Berjaya Roasters (M) Sdn Bhd. Under a corporate exercise by Berjaya Corporation Berhad in 2011, Berjaya Roasters (M) Sdn Bhd became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berjaya Food Berhad.

And I was thinking a 90 minute drive for a Kenny's Rogers lunch was inconvenient.

Believe it or not, they used to have one of those damn things in Khobar, Saudi Arabia. It was decent. Meanwhile, they have Church's Fried Chicken over there, but they call it Texas Fried Chicken 'cause of the whole church thing in Islamic countries. I'm serious.

Boston Market used to be Marketed Chicken.
