Michael Che under fire after sharing shocking joke about Simone Biles

Saturday Night Live star Michael Che has sparked significant online backlash after sharing an offensive joke about Simone Biles.

Che on Instagram wrote, "Man, I wanna make fun of Simone Biles," the gymnast who recently withdrew from competitions at the Olympics to focus on her mental health, per Page Six.

"I got like 3 mins of Simone Biles jokes in my head," he wrote.

From there, Che posted a joke about Biles that was shared with him, which said that Larry Nassar "understands Simone Biles better than anyone" because "he too had to quit doing what he loved at the pinnacle of his career because of mounting pressure." Nassar is the former U.S women's national gymnastics team doctor and convicted sex offender who Biles has said sexually abused her. Che reacted to this joke by calling it "absolutely tasteless" but rating it a "9/10." He also shared another joke that said, "Who said black don't crack," which he also praised and rated an "8/10."

Che's Instagram posts quickly drew heavy criticism, with director Matthew A. Cherry blasting the comedian as "trash" and journalist Stephanie Guerilus writing, "Michael Che is disgusting. He's always punching down. Simone Biles has more than enough going on without her sexual assault being turned into a cheap punch line." Activist Farrah Khan also wrote, "Larry Nassar sexually assaulted over 300 gymnasts including Simone Biles. Jokes about this immense violence are never okay," while tagging HBO Max and NBC and questioning why the comedian is "still on your roster."

After Che jokingly claimed to have been "hacked," Newsweek notes his entire Instagram account is now empty. Based on his reaction, writer Delia Harrington tweeted the comedian perhaps "had no idea how beloved Simone Biles is, or just how messed up it is to share a Larry Nasser joke."

The black don’t crack joke is good.

by Anonymousreply 1July 30, 2021 8:03 PM

Comics simply should not broadly share comedy-insider jokes.

The Holy Writ of Comedy includes a statement that whatever our imagination and craft lead us to is accepted because humor and wit must be free.

It also adds, "....but outside the Guild, know your fucking audience, you idiot."

by Anonymousreply 2July 30, 2021 8:12 PM

Nothing at all funny about creepy and vile Dr. Nasser giving massage treatments to young gymasts from the inside of the vaginal canal to "relax muscles and release tension".

I've found him funny so many times in the past, but this is terribly disappointing. It's sort of like when Joan Rivers made that quip about the US Veterans coming back without arms and legs... After some of these, it makes it really difficult to like them any longer.

by Anonymousreply 3July 30, 2021 8:30 PM

Comedians can no longer make jokes. Too many people react like R3 now.

by Anonymousreply 4July 30, 2021 8:35 PM

He had a good run.

by Anonymousreply 5July 30, 2021 8:37 PM

2 problems: 1. He bigged up his jokes before he made them, and they weren't anything special, wasn't offended, didn't laugh. 2. His role on SNL's Weekend Update is sometimes that of a sort of moral judge, so he's a bit of a hypocrite.

by Anonymousreply 6July 30, 2021 8:41 PM

*before and after he made them

by Anonymousreply 7July 30, 2021 8:42 PM

but he's saying he was hacked... right? i'm confused

by Anonymousreply 8July 30, 2021 8:44 PM

She is indeed a pathetic loser so there is some truth in humor here.

by Anonymousreply 9July 30, 2021 8:47 PM

[quote]Comedians can no longer make jokes. Too many people react like [R3] now.

Comedians can make jokes.

They just shouldn't make jokes about teen girl rape.

Which, I'm 90% sure, anyone would tell you.

The problem is people like R4 who think avoiding a subject like September 11th is the same as avoiding EVERYTHING.

by Anonymousreply 10July 30, 2021 8:47 PM

I’ve never like his ugly ass and with him being SNL’s head writer, I truly believe he’s the main reason the show hasn’t been good lately. Fire Che and I bet the show will get better. Colin could do Weekend Update either by himself or with an SNK player who doesn’t tend to laugh at most of their own jokes.

by Anonymousreply 11July 30, 2021 8:51 PM

I must be getting soft but I found the first joke offensive, or at least not that funny. The second one was good, though.

by Anonymousreply 12July 30, 2021 8:55 PM

Cheers R10.

R4 Some things are NEVER funny, and any of these sophomoric attempts to make jokes is hurtful as well as disrespectful to the victims, their families, and other victims of sex abuse far beyond Nassar's reach.

The joke Joan made about the planes being able to hold more Iraqi vets and use less fuel because.... was just utterly revolting and disrespectful to all amputees and military vets. Some things are inviolate. Victims of such tragedies are not fair game to be made sport of.

by Anonymousreply 13July 30, 2021 9:00 PM

^such GRUESOME tragedies

by Anonymousreply 14July 30, 2021 9:02 PM

I hate that we've lost our sense of humor.

by Anonymousreply 15July 30, 2021 9:05 PM

He would get many WWs here on DL. We appreciate dark comedy from dark comedians about dark people.

by Anonymousreply 16July 30, 2021 9:10 PM

[quote] [R4] Some things are NEVER funny

🙄🙄🙄 Whatever, frau.

by Anonymousreply 17July 30, 2021 9:10 PM

Can I do a “pee pee in your coke” joke?

by Anonymousreply 18July 30, 2021 9:18 PM

Yes they are funny. But they are also tasteless and cruel.

That's what humor often is - tasteless and cruel. To someone.

Spare me the nanny posters.

In England a guy was on trial essentially for tasteless jokes (no matter what they formally name it) because he built a model of Grenfell Towers and then burned it and filmed it.

He was acquitted at trial. The government appealed the acquittal (I cannot believe that is allowed!) and the Court of Appeals reversed the acquittal.

I am still unsure which is worse - that there is a criminal offense for tasteless jokes or that the prosecution can appeal an acquittal.

by Anonymousreply 19July 30, 2021 9:19 PM

The Nassar joke is not even a joke

by Anonymousreply 20July 30, 2021 9:21 PM

[quote] Some things are NEVER funny

To you, maybe. Let other people decide for themselves.

by Anonymousreply 21July 30, 2021 9:22 PM

R15 I hope by your words you mean it's sad this passes as humour for some, rather than suggesting those (like me) who find it extremely distasteful and sick are killing comedy, or comedians. I haven't lost my sense of humour, as mine isn't reliant on victimising victims.

Well, either way, you certainly can't use Che's joke as an example to lament, as there's nothing funny about it. This isn't a PC or a a typical tale of some slightly tasteless jokes being panned by prudes, it's simply no way to treat a young women, no way to treat one's fellow countrymen as an athlete competing, no way to treat victims.

Some may argue a joke such as this has a timeframe, wherein ten or twenty years it could be found less offensive, or tolerable as a truly tasteless subject. I still think it sucks for the future, yet Biles may be more detached, and will have had some time to heal.

Biles is still experiencing panic attacks and is brave enough to be open about her struggle with mental health. Only a perverted bully finds her fair game. This is also a different situaton to telling a joke to a friend, this is out there for Biles to read, and possibly feel more needless shame over.

R17 Not a frau here, but I am compassionate enough to imagine how she might feel. I also can wuite easily imagine how I'd feel if she were my sister or my niece.

by Anonymousreply 22July 30, 2021 9:24 PM

I suppose I am a free speech absolutist of sorts because to me

[quote]Some things are NEVER funny,

implies someone has to determine what those "things" are. And that's were it gets tricky.

Of course he means the latter and not the former. Do you have reading comprehension problems? God, sanctimonious and dumb and fuck.

by Anonymousreply 27July 30, 2021 9:32 PM

I haven't declared myself judge, jury, and executioner here... Just think it's about as low as a man can go really. I didn't even opine on whether he should apologise... I also didn't call for his ousting @ SNL, so give yourselves each a MARY! for your responses.

by Anonymousreply 28July 30, 2021 9:33 PM

R27 You should give yourself a clout about the head, AND a MARY! I was leaving room to be polite, as it's quite possible that others here have read his ideas for thirty minutes of Simone Biles jokes, and asked themselves, "What...?"

The tolerable tasteless jokes at least make some people laugh, or are witty... Any of you really bent over shuddering with glee and struggling to take a breath? Sounds like a certain type here has found his ultimate topic to ironically become an SJW to defend: the indefensible which spews from these brilliant comedians' mouths. "Just an utter wellspring of good humour and glee that Michael Che happens to be"... "Ah yes, his talent is a great gift to the world some say"

SPARE ME

by Anonymousreply 29July 30, 2021 9:42 PM

Bottom line: We need to cancel Joan Rivers and Pete Davidson.

Again, speak English. What is this gibberish?

by Anonymousreply 31July 30, 2021 9:47 PM

He's brilliant, and filling a role society needs now as much as it ever has. By saying "fuck off" to people trying to silence and control what were ALL allowed to talk about, he's taking on the intellectual and social mantle of George Carlin, et Al. We should all thank Michael Che.

SNL has sucked for decades. Lorne Is the one who needs to be replaced.

R31 Could you kindly just fuck off about now? Now, let's get one thing straight as an arrow: I speak the English, and you speak the American. You're an ugly troll as well with a lousy sense of humour if criticism of Michael Che gets your arse so inflamed.

by Anonymousreply 34July 30, 2021 9:52 PM

Bigot.

by Anonymousreply 40July 30, 2021 10:28 PM

lol he wiped his instagram cuz of all the backlash

can't take the heat despite going after people with awful jokes

I hate when comedians say they "comedic license" to make jokes about anything. Some subjects are not funny

by Anonymousreply 41July 31, 2021 1:08 AM

He is not very smart, isn't he? He could simply issue an apology for that awful Larry joke and move on quickly, it's not his joke but it's poor taste to reply that, people would forget in a week. By claiming hack now, he amplified a non story on IG to national headlines, and he has become a joke himself and he will be forever stuck with "I am hacked" which no one will believe, even worse a mini public outrage for condoning a molester joke is on the horizon, he might have to issue a formal apology.

by Anonymousreply 42July 31, 2021 1:35 AM

Besides the fact that he wasn't hacked.

As someone else said, how bad do his normal jokes have to be that no one believes he was hacked?

by Anonymousreply 43July 31, 2021 2:03 AM

Was Michael Che "hacked," like Joy Reid was "hacked?"

by Anonymousreply 44July 31, 2021 2:10 AM

Why did he rally and instigate others to gang up on Biles? He’s a scumbag. Boycott SNL.

by Anonymousreply 45July 31, 2021 2:20 AM

by Anonymousreply 49July 31, 2021 3:06 AM

R32 Also stand with you on this.

by Anonymousreply 50July 31, 2021 3:08 AM

I hope that all the people bemoaning how comedians can't make jokes also defended Kevin sHart's homophobic jokes.

Che is one of the least funny people on SNL and this just underscores that. Jokes require good timing, wit, shouldn't punch down, and have to actually be funny -- the latter being the most important if you're going to make an offensive joke. Biles is a sexual abuse survivor who dropped out of a MAJOR global competition due to mental/physical health issues. What in the world would make Che think it would be a good idea to bring up her abuse and liken her stepping back to her sexual abuser losing his career and social standing? This guy is a jackass.

by Anonymousreply 51July 31, 2021 3:18 AM

[quote] shouldn't punch down

R51 Biles is an Olympian, Che is a nobody.

by Anonymousreply 52July 31, 2021 3:30 AM

R49 Are you not essentially doing the exact same, objecting to one's personal opinion that he finds some topics unfunny? I don't see the difference. Perhaps you can elaborate and help me to understand.

There's no automatic serious consequence for someone simply stating that opinion honestly. Freedom of speech doesn't come without consequences like some people objecting It's so very interesting what a paradox this has become.

You stand with the poster who claims a statement such as that (mine) implies... No such thing was said to that end mate. You're just championing something you believe you have a right to do, which is fine, but both of you shouldn't put words in my mouth either. Smells and tastes a bit trollish, come to think of it, doesn't it?

I never said he ought to be censored, or anything. I just personally don't find anything even remotely funny about a sixteen through eighteen year old girl (in Biles case) being repeatedly molested by Team USA's doctor. I get to say that whether you think I'm the stodgy cunt or not.

There's nothing altruistic in saying you're protecting freedom of speech by trying to squelch my opinion, because such an opinion by itself, leads to or promotes censorship. What utter tosh. People who make bold statements such as "implies someone has to make such decisions" without any proof or evidence of that are guilty of making an intellectual cop-out really.. I said many things, yet I implied nothing of the sort.

I believe I've made myself clear.

by Anonymousreply 53July 31, 2021 4:05 AM

Of course Mr. Che has the freedom to make any joke he likes.

He also must try to survive the consequences of his actions. He must have or should have known.

And hacked? Man up or at least be original. What an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 54July 31, 2021 4:06 AM

Weren’t they kids when that doctor diddled them?? I am just going to say dude should have known better than to post this shit. I mean, has he seen the society we are currently living in?

by Anonymousreply 55July 31, 2021 4:18 AM

[quote] the society we are currently living in?

We are living in the McCarthy Witch Hunt Society.

by Anonymousreply 56July 31, 2021 4:21 AM

For the posters here who (for whatever reason) are unable to empathise with, or relate to a young female victim, Dr. Nassar molested teen boys as well. Jacob Moore was twenty-one years-old when he decided to be the first male victim to come forward publicly. There have been several others since who remain hidden to the public. Maybe just for a moment, try to imagine yourself there as a young boy on Dr. Nassar's exam table.

by Anonymousreply 57July 31, 2021 4:25 AM

The jokes would be funnier if Che had written them to be delivered by Colin Jost.

by Anonymousreply 58July 31, 2021 4:37 AM

[quote]Maybe just for a moment, try to imagine yourself there as a young boy on Dr. Nassar's exam table.

R57 honest question: why? Why should I have to imagine that? Am I supposed to think that this justified her doing whatever she wants without criticism? You're trying to be emotionally manipulative and that's wrong.

by Anonymousreply 59July 31, 2021 4:38 AM

Emotionally manipulative isn't as bad as digitally manipulative (i.e. fingers in anus)

by Anonymousreply 60July 31, 2021 4:41 AM

Nassar molested over 500 girls?

It's so shocking that none of them told their parents.

by Anonymousreply 61July 31, 2021 4:46 AM

Michael Che said that he doesn't judge men for being homophobic because "he doesn't know what they've been through"

by Anonymousreply 62July 31, 2021 4:57 AM

R59 I find quite often those who find humour in such things have some sort of problem identifying with the victim. Perhaps those who are such ardent defenders here may feel differently if they could relate better to their own sex. Nassar was more repulsive than the more common abusers who frot or just touch. He put accupunture needles in he boys' penises and testicles.(like Jacob Moore). He told some they worked better if they were erect as well. He shoved his entire hand into girls' vaginas. There are some rather sick pigs on this thread who cannot appreciate any of this.

by Anonymousreply 63July 31, 2021 5:00 AM

So sick of these fucking humorless Karens. They need to get fucked even worse than I do.

by Anonymousreply 64July 31, 2021 5:00 AM

[quote]After Che jokingly claimed to have been "hacked"...

Oh, for Christ's sake! This foolishness!

Has anyone's Twitter account really ever been "hacked" and had the hacker post over a period of hours? Joy Reid also tried this desperate lie, didn't she? I guess all the black people get hacked because RACISM! Che is a major ASSHOLE!

by Anonymousreply 65July 31, 2021 5:04 AM

Wow. I used to like him. I cannot abide this.

by Anonymousreply 66July 31, 2021 5:05 AM

R64 Right, this is just the funniest material you've ever heard, right? It's all brilliantly hilarious. Who the fuck cares how the victims feel. Let's give them all something to be ashamed of by making light of it all on SNL.

by Anonymousreply 67July 31, 2021 5:05 AM

He is fucking old school lmfao funny but his jokes go over better on video when you can see his aw shucks expression.

by Anonymousreply 68July 31, 2021 5:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 70July 31, 2021 5:18 AM

R59 No one here said Biles could never be criticised for the rest of her life, that isn't what this is about. It's about victim shaming with malice as regards material for his Nationally aired, and Internationally watched television programme. He said he "wants to make fun of her"... and goes straight to the sex abuse.

As an American, if you feel she has let you down, and you're seriously disappointed in her quitting, talk about that. Again, no one poster said anything like that.

by Anonymousreply 71July 31, 2021 5:19 AM

The amount of people screeching " no sense of humour" remind me of the Trump bootlickers who defended Trump when he mocked the reporter who suffers from Parkinson's Disease. Yeah, really funny. I feel embarassed for many of you.

by Anonymousreply 72July 31, 2021 5:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 80July 31, 2021 7:32 AM

R63 I'm r59 and I'm thinking about what you said. The "male framing" isn't necessary (CSA is gross regardless of the victim), so what we have is an adult victim of CSA and the question is how permissive do we as a society feel of that fact being publically joked about. Put that way, I think I do agree with you that the joke is not only in bad taste (which I thought before; I just was uncomfortable with Che being piled on), but that maybe it should be condemned.

I think I was confusing the CSA joke with the quitter joke. I 100% think that the quitting can be and should be able to be (but not necessarily should be) joked about, but your have convinced me on the Nassar joke that it was inappropriate. I just hate agreeing with the wokescolds because they are masters of leveraging a small, reasonable ask into a huge, bizarre demand.

by Anonymousreply 87August 1, 2021 3:38 AM

R81 Glad to see you've come round. I don't particularly fancy myself a "woke-scold" but see that end of it. I'm not even saying someone shouldn't make a personal joke privately (delivered to another, or even anonymously here, without naming names) or generally about pedophiles, hebophikes, or ephebophiles really.

It's very much the public victim shaming via social media; declaring he aims to make fun of her that way, and asks others to pile on for his SNL material. In addition, I do feel it's very poor sportsmanship to publicly denigrate her whilst she's still over there, possibly competing in other future events. This is especially poignant as they're both Americans.

I feel for her that she's shared part of her problems are from dealing with the PTSD. She seems like a humble and lovable young lady to boot.
