Does anyone else hate fish?

I can’t eat sea food. The smell is the only thing that makes me gag

by Anonymousreply 67July 30, 2021 6:06 PM

No I love it

by Anonymousreply 1July 29, 2021 5:37 PM

My condolences to your childlike palate, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2July 29, 2021 5:38 PM

I’m cool with shrimp when it’s made right, but other than that, yeah. No. It smells like end of the day pussy.

by Anonymousreply 3July 29, 2021 5:39 PM

I hate seafood and have never eaten it. Growing up in New England, it could be problematic.

by Anonymousreply 4July 29, 2021 5:39 PM

We can’t stand fish! Discuss

by Anonymousreply 5July 29, 2021 5:40 PM

It's ok but not my favorite. I loathe shrimp though. They are like crunchy little sea insects.

by Anonymousreply 6July 29, 2021 5:43 PM

Yeah and I feel sorry for them.

Fish live in the ocean and other bodies of water, away from humans and in a different habitat, and still can't live their lives undisturbed and in peace.

They also smell and taste like the decay that floats around in their urine-and-feces-riddled environments. Eating fish and seafood is filthy.

by Anonymousreply 7July 29, 2021 5:49 PM

I like fish, shrimp, oyster, mussel, crab, lobster but I can't do eel, octopus, squid and slugs. Sea food's one of the best sources for zinc, Omega-3 fatty acids, and other important minerals, but I can understand why the taste can be off-putting to some.

by Anonymousreply 8July 29, 2021 5:56 PM

Hold tight, hold tight, a-hold tight, hold tight Fododo-de-yacka saki Want some sea food mama Shrimps and rice they're very nice I like oysters, lobsters too I like my tasty butter fish, fooo When I come home late at night I get my favorite dish, fish

by Anonymousreply 9July 29, 2021 6:13 PM

Erna. Hates fish.

by Anonymousreply 10July 29, 2021 6:13 PM

[quote]I hate seafood and have never eaten it.

How do you know you hate it if you've never eaten it?

by Anonymousreply 11July 29, 2021 6:16 PM

r11 I guess I should've said I tried it when I was a kid. Have never eaten it since.

by Anonymousreply 12July 29, 2021 6:22 PM

You should not eat them raw, OP.

by Anonymousreply 13July 29, 2021 6:25 PM

I know 2 people like OP -- not allergic to seafood, just hate it. They'd rather not be at the same table with people eating fish because even that slight aroma can be off-putting. I love it and am a pescatarian, who eats fish but not animals or birds. I think the fish-haters are nuts, but they think the same of me so I guess we're even.

by Anonymousreply 14July 29, 2021 6:32 PM

New Englander here. I’m not trying to be precious but I can only eat seafood if it’s freshly caught and prepared at a reputable restaurant or we get it ourselves from the fishmongers on the wharf. I appreciate the salty sweetness of very fresh seafood not the ammoniated funk of days old fish which is disgusting.

In general, food is best when it’s local. I love the steaks in Omaha but I’ll skip their scallops and mussels.

by Anonymousreply 15July 29, 2021 7:23 PM

New Englander as well. I could eat seafood every day, especially fish like haddock, cod, scallops and lobster, I love it all. No thank you to fresh water fish. Fresh fish should only smell like the ocean, if it has any other odor it’s too old.

by Anonymousreply 16July 29, 2021 7:41 PM

Love most seafood, except raw shellfish - just no! Not a huge fan of breaded shrimp. Strongly prefer whole fried clams (with belly) over strips.

by Anonymousreply 17July 29, 2021 7:44 PM

Y'all seafood haters should try a dice of raw salmon in Japan. It's exquisite. Also, on a side note for the poor, the crap restaurant at Ocean city, Maryland is also relatively good.

by Anonymousreply 18July 29, 2021 7:48 PM

I hate regular fish of all kinds (although I'll have a tuna salad sandwich from time to time.) But I like most shellfish--just not the rubbery ones like clams, calamari, and oysters. I'll eat sushi that has cooked shellfish in it (or no fish at all), but that's about it.

by Anonymousreply 19July 29, 2021 7:49 PM

Fresh fish and shellfish don't smell. If it has an odor, don't eat it, it could have gone bad.

by Anonymousreply 20July 29, 2021 7:55 PM

r20 Well, there goes my sex life.

by Anonymousreply 21July 29, 2021 7:59 PM

Rhode Island kills it with their calamari. So many different prep styles and flavors and all so delicious. Find the Italian mom & pops. I’m in Massachusetts so we fight over seafood and pizza and shit but I’ll give RI the win for Best Calamari. 🏆

by Anonymousreply 22July 29, 2021 7:59 PM

OP = Chasten with dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets

by Anonymousreply 23July 29, 2021 8:02 PM

Shrimp has been ruined by over farming. It mostly tastes nasty now. Gulf shrimp is still good but less flavorful than it used to be.

by Anonymousreply 24July 29, 2021 8:08 PM

I only started eating some fish in my 30s and 40s. Not a fan of shrimp or lobster. Crab is okay in small amounts. No to oysters, raw or fried. I tried charred octopus a couple years ago which wasn’t bad. Also a sea urchin dish which didn’t leave much impression other than the presentation despite being expensive

by Anonymousreply 25July 29, 2021 8:14 PM

I try to eat some fish or shellfish every day

by Anonymousreply 26July 29, 2021 8:34 PM

Sea urchin has the texture of grainy snot.

by Anonymousreply 27July 29, 2021 8:36 PM

Barramundi is awesome.

by Anonymousreply 28July 29, 2021 8:39 PM

Love seafood and fish of most kinds. I don't care for dark meat or super oily fish like dark meat tuna (gag!). Love crustaceans and mollusks. I won't eat octopus because they are too smart and majestic to be eaten.

by Anonymousreply 29July 29, 2021 8:43 PM

I'm quite a big fish eater, but once I had a shellfish meal that made me gag.

Conch (sea snail) Stew. It is the worst thing I have ever eaten, since I sampled it I have come across it all through The Caribbean, South America and West Africa. I know what it is called in seven languages now so that I can avoid it.

Another New Englander chiming in here. As has been mentioned, being freshly caught is key to fish flavor, aroma and avoiding the curse of Cheryl and Erna.

If you like fish broiled or baked, or non-batter dipped, the last place you want buy anything fish would be some inland sub shop or seafood takeout joint.

by Anonymousreply 31July 29, 2021 8:48 PM

R30, what did you find so disgusting about conch?

by Anonymousreply 32July 29, 2021 8:50 PM

People complaining that seafood live in filth - by no means universally true - are more than happy to eat fruits and vegetables grown in LITERAL manure!

by Anonymousreply 33July 29, 2021 8:50 PM

OP, then stop buying fish at Walmart and go to a proper market where it is actually fresh.

by Anonymousreply 34July 29, 2021 8:54 PM

R32 Conch retains a kind of weird slime on it's surface, probably why they make a strongly flavored stew to disguise it. Try it sometime and see what you think?

by Anonymousreply 35July 29, 2021 9:01 PM

Gay men tend not to like seafood

by Anonymousreply 36July 29, 2021 9:18 PM

I prefer freshwater fish to seafood. It’s more delicate. I’m a delicate person.

by Anonymousreply 37July 29, 2021 10:19 PM

[quote] Does anyone else hate fish?

Um, this is a gay message board. We all do.

by Anonymousreply 38July 29, 2021 10:30 PM

I only hate it and will pass if it's cooked or served in tomato sauce, or with cheese. I also loathe fooked oysters, only fresh and raw for me. If I overthink shellfish, especially shrimp, crawfish, soft shell crab, or some others, the idea of them is a bit unsettling. Many things are like that however, and I simply try not to think about how they resemble insects. Soft shell crab is like a deep fried Tarantula, but lovely with a salad and French or Italian bread.

I do agree with the posters upthread that the fish may often be unhealthy, but many things I eat at times are RATHER unhealthy.

I don't shame people for what they like or don't like; we're all different.

by Anonymousreply 39July 29, 2021 10:34 PM

^ cooked or fooked is probably bad!

by Anonymousreply 40July 29, 2021 10:35 PM

Although I really hate most fin fish (i.e., not shellfish), I can deal with very mild-flavored white fish like cod or haddock. But salmon, catfish and the like? Gross. I'll bet I'd like fish and chips, but I've never really tried it. There's always something I know I'll like better on the menu.

When I was a kid and we couldn't eat meat on Fridays, I often ended up eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches because I couldn't stand the filet of sole my mother made.

by Anonymousreply 41July 29, 2021 10:41 PM

Go into a seafood restaurant before they open or start cooking.

by Anonymousreply 42July 29, 2021 10:44 PM

I only like certain types, but in general I'm not a massive fan.

by Anonymousreply 43July 29, 2021 10:45 PM

I know where this is goin' and I don't like it. You start talking about hating fish and before long the thread will be talking about hating black fish in particular. You're a bunch of racist and misogynistic homos.

by Anonymousreply 44July 29, 2021 10:53 PM

I disliked fish as a kid, since my exposure was very strong bluefish as a kid from a family friend, always giving my folks gifts of his catch.

by Anonymousreply 45July 29, 2021 10:54 PM

Hated it as a kid. Eat it several times a week as an adult. Love it now.

by Anonymousreply 46July 29, 2021 11:01 PM

Not surprised Jada Pinkett Smith has strong opinions on fish

by Anonymousreply 47July 29, 2021 11:02 PM

Love fish with scales. Can’t bear ‘seafood’ like lobsters and crayfish and shrimp, those feelers and claws, they disgust me, it’d be like eating insects. Don’t like mussels and clams etc either.

by Anonymousreply 48July 29, 2021 11:14 PM

Why can't Catholics eat meat on Fridays? I've always thought that was asinine.

by Anonymousreply 49July 29, 2021 11:37 PM

Cause the priests might bugger them!

by Anonymousreply 50July 29, 2021 11:39 PM

I'd like to try it, R35 -- I do know a few tourists who ate it in the tropics and loved it.

by Anonymousreply 51July 29, 2021 11:42 PM

I'm glad people (and pets) either love or hate seafood. If we all loved it we'd have finished off the oceans a lot sooner.

by Anonymousreply 52July 29, 2021 11:48 PM

Cheryl!!!!

by Anonymousreply 53July 29, 2021 11:50 PM

How do fish shit?

by Anonymousreply 54July 29, 2021 11:50 PM

R49, abstinence is a form of penance and the Catholics are big on repenting for their sins (as part of their weekly confession, for example). In 1966, the ecumenical council decided that it would be enough to abstain from eating meat only on certain Fridays (e.g., during Lent) rather than every week. I liked meatless Fridays because I loved grilled cheese sandwiches!

by Anonymousreply 55July 29, 2021 11:54 PM

I disdain fish and all of its analogues

by Anonymousreply 56July 29, 2021 11:56 PM

R54 I take it you never had pet Goldfish?

It looks like this:

All the fish in the ocean are radiated from the non stop nuclear ooze of fukashima.

No thanks

by Anonymousreply 58July 30, 2021 12:14 AM

I'm a fan of sushi, but not sashimi.

by Anonymousreply 59July 30, 2021 12:15 AM

[quote] Why can't Catholics eat meat on Fridays? I've always thought that was asinine.

That ended in the 60s, or have you been asleep since then.

My family is Anglican, but we had been told by a Catholic convert relative that it was because Christ died on a Friday.

by Anonymousreply 60July 30, 2021 12:17 AM

R15 & R16 My favorite seafood memories happened over freshly-caught Maine lobstah, some of which was used in the most amazing Lobstah Corn Chowdah I've ever had (I need to ask my friend for her mother's recipe).

Seriously though, it's was insanely delicious, and my experiences with fresh-caught New England seafood aren't vast, but I definitely got a taste of what you're both describing. And it definitely does make a difference.

by Anonymousreply 61July 30, 2021 12:17 AM

The real reason was to support the fishing industry.

by Anonymousreply 62July 30, 2021 12:18 AM

I like salmon and shrimps , cooked . Don't like very fatty fish .

by Anonymousreply 63July 30, 2021 12:22 AM

We almost tried some fish once, but we immediately collapsed onto our fainting couch.

by Anonymousreply 64July 30, 2021 12:25 AM

I've had fish food poisoning three times in my life (each time with Moules marinière, mussels) yet I still order it, though never from a place that has poisoned me.

As long as you are healthy It's quite short-lived, maybe 3-4 hours and I really like the dish if it's well made.

by Anonymousreply 65July 30, 2021 12:38 AM

[quote]That ended in the 60s, or have you been asleep since then.

I wasn't even born yet. I'm asking because I know a few old Catholics who still do this. Most people I know are not religious at all. I know nothing about the intricacies of the Catholic Church.

by Anonymousreply 66July 30, 2021 12:45 AM
