Heterosexual Figure Skater Nahan Chen apologizes for homophobic remarks

Chen said in a podcastm "Yes, certainly. Especially as a male athlete... as a straight male athlete in a... fairly.... homosexual-dominated sport, or LGBTQ-dominated sport... I think that there is that connotation and there is that “Well we don’t really wanna watch guys skate around,” and [unintelligible] we’d rather watch hockey or... we’d rather watch females do that, which I think is... pretty messed up in itself... we’re all doing this... for us, it’s a genuine sport... we spend our whole lives trying to hone this craft... and to just sort of be belittled like that is not... something that is... generally taken lightly."

He later apologized.

I don't get it...what did he say that was bad? I just read his words as "ya, there's a perception that hockey is masculine and skating is feminine, which is in part contributed by that there's a lot of LGBTQ in skating." Isn't that...true? Doesn't make it right. Was he supposed to add "AND THIS ISN'T TRUE AND IF YOUT HINK THIS YOU ARE BAD."

by Anonymousreply 1July 28, 2021 12:32 PM

What he said was not homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 2July 28, 2021 12:33 PM

Was the offensive part cut out of the quote, because I don't get what he said as deserving an apology.

by Anonymousreply 3July 28, 2021 12:36 PM

I'm offended that he said "hone this craft". That's about it.

If he truly feels he said something homophobic, he could certainly make up for it by presenting hole. I would accept it as an apology.

by Anonymousreply 4July 28, 2021 12:38 PM

What is offensive about what he said? Huh?

by Anonymousreply 5July 28, 2021 12:39 PM

I'd do her.

by Anonymousreply 6July 28, 2021 12:39 PM

His remarks almost made me forget he was an Asian in a homosexual-dominated sport.

by Anonymousreply 7July 28, 2021 12:39 PM

He didn’t say anything wrong.

by Anonymousreply 8July 28, 2021 12:40 PM

I guess the truth is not what the SJWs accept anymore.

by Anonymousreply 9July 28, 2021 12:42 PM

Any straight guy who's willing to look like this is ok with me . . .

by Anonymousreply 11July 28, 2021 12:44 PM

It was questionable. It was a slight. And the use of “female” - just say “women”. Don’t objectify.

by Anonymousreply 12July 28, 2021 12:46 PM

“Questionable”

“Problematic”

“Systemic”

EXHAUSTING

by Anonymousreply 13July 28, 2021 12:47 PM

Not surprised. He voted for Trump.

by Anonymousreply 14July 28, 2021 12:48 PM

You called, R13?

by Anonymousreply 15July 28, 2021 12:48 PM

Lol R13–I’m way more “anti” than you. I’m against CRT, trans completely but this was a slight against gay men. Who’s “we” in we’d rather watch women? Not me.

by Anonymousreply 16July 28, 2021 12:50 PM

People offended by this kind of thing live in soft chambers wrapped in fluffy pillows and eat only marshmallows and spend all their time crying.

by Anonymousreply 17July 28, 2021 12:59 PM

ACCOUNTABILITY HEALING

by Anonymousreply 18July 28, 2021 1:03 PM

I don't think Chen voted for Trump - that's Vincent Zhou, another Chinese-American skater who's probably the 2nd or 3rd best US skater, at least based on number of quads.

From outsports.com:

Chen’s podcast remarks were ignorant, tone-deaf, homophobic and sexist and he deserved the hammering he took from skating fans on Twitter. What bothered me from the start was that he wasted no time assuring his interviewers that he was straight, while his contention that skating is a “homosexual-dominated sport” is both insulting and wrong.

by Anonymousreply 19July 28, 2021 1:20 PM

Oh crap... sorry to repeat the link in OP - I just read the commentary and didn't click on it.

by Anonymousreply 20July 28, 2021 1:21 PM

[quote]while his contention that skating is a “homosexual-dominated sport” is both insulting and wrong.

LOL - men's figure skating. MEN'S FIGURE SKATING.

Next you'll tell me that florist, hair dresser, and fashion designer are also dominated by straight men.

by Anonymousreply 21July 28, 2021 1:24 PM

[quote] live in soft chambers wrapped in fluffy pillows and eat only marshmallows and spend all their time crying.

I want to live in soft chambers wrapped in fluffy pillows!

I will, however, eat whatever the fuck I want and only spend some time crying.

by Anonymousreply 22July 28, 2021 1:29 PM

It's funny how his fans are always bragging that he goes to YALE, like he's some super genius, when he can barely string a sentence together. I don't think he hates gays, but he's completely void of any personality and totally incoherent without a prepared PR script to study.

by Anonymousreply 23July 28, 2021 1:46 PM

The lady doth protest too much.

by Anonymousreply 24July 28, 2021 1:51 PM

Fuck Outsports... it was a perfectly fine and honest statement

by Anonymousreply 25July 28, 2021 1:53 PM

Saying male figure skating is being conceived as associated with being gay is not homophonic. Implying that being "suspected" as being gay is wrong, which is exactly what Chen is doing, is.

by Anonymousreply 26July 28, 2021 2:00 PM

What he said is that he’s offended by being thought of as gay for being a figure skater. Is that offensive? I guess it’s his reality, and he is fighting stereotypes. But some could infer that he’s saying being gay is bad.

by Anonymousreply 27July 28, 2021 2:02 PM

He was trying to make the point that he thinks audiences don’t enjoy watching men skate as much as they enjoy watching women skate. But then he needlessly brought up straight vs gay - which served no purpose (unless he is insecure and just wanted to claim his straightness -again.)

And his stream of verbal vomit included a switch from “homosexual” to “LGBTQ” which is a little bit like someone slipping in an “Oriental” crack before correcting themselves with “Asian”.

I get why people reacted to it - and I don’t think they are wrong to do so.

by Anonymousreply 28July 28, 2021 2:03 PM

The only "offensive" thing he did was to apologize. He sad nothing wrong. You think people like R28 will ever be satisfied?

by Anonymousreply 30July 28, 2021 2:18 PM

Why in the world would outsports.com think that stating skating is a "homosexual-dominated sport" is "insulting?" Shouldn't they be happy that a sport is "homosexual-dominated?" It seems that their response is a lot more homophobic than Nathan's original statement which was fine.

by Anonymousreply 31July 28, 2021 2:28 PM

He's trying to say, "I'M STRAIGHT", but is he................

by Anonymousreply 32July 28, 2021 2:33 PM

He says it's "belitt[ling]" to be associated with the "homosexual" image of his sport. He was very quick to point out he's NOT a homo. Until recently, there had been exactly one top skater who came out while still competing. The ones who have come out recently have talked about how much they feared for their careers, the homophobic shit they've experienced (judges/coaches telling them to skate less gay), the biases they've fought against. Basically, this straight guy is talking like he's an oppressed straight male fighting against the gaystapo.

That said, he is so incoherent I can see why his "message" got lost amongst the "likes" and "I means."

by Anonymousreply 33July 28, 2021 2:38 PM

Figure skating is dominated by a bunch of homophobic old men who want men to skate less gay. The Canadians had a whole ass "Get Tough" campaign to make skating more hypermasculine. There might be a lot of gay athletes but most of them are very fearful of coming out. He says that people skating to classical music = gay, and that it's more "masculine" to skate to pop and hip hop. LMAO. He might not be a homophobe, but he's definitely a moron.

by Anonymousreply 34July 28, 2021 2:50 PM

R32 He's is the most boring skater I've ever watched so he is likely straight.

by Anonymousreply 35July 28, 2021 2:55 PM

Adam Rippon was the first openly gay American man to skate at the Olympics. A prominent figure skating gold medalist and now commentator called Rippon "earth's mistake" and said he couldn't wait for Rippon to die. Brian Boitano didn't come out until he was 50. Johnny Weir is gay from outer space, but he didn't dare come out until he retired and was belittled and made fun of his entire career. Weir was also excluded from ice shows because he was deemed to be "not family friendly." Figure skating is full of gays, but it is ruled by a bunch of old homophobes who fall all over themselves trying to promote the no homos like this guy. He's one of the biggest beneficiaries of their biases and he's complaining? Sit down CUNT.

by Anonymousreply 36July 28, 2021 3:25 PM

His comments were homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 37July 28, 2021 4:32 PM

His ex-girlfriend came out as bi. Did he ever comment on it?

by Anonymousreply 38July 28, 2021 4:44 PM

R38 He said: "Like, yeah, like I mean, like she, like whatever, I mean, personally, NO HOMO."

by Anonymousreply 39July 28, 2021 4:54 PM

He implied that a straight man might not want to be mistaken for gay.

That's a major thought crime these days.

by Anonymousreply 40July 28, 2021 5:01 PM

He’s cute; grey hair!

by Anonymousreply 41July 28, 2021 5:02 PM

I just remembered that Patrick Chan's ex-girlfriend is an out lesbian. Is this a reverse Asian beard for a gay guy thing?

by Anonymousreply 42July 28, 2021 5:05 PM

R40 yes thought crime for a jumbled mess of misspeaking, it’s no longer ok to just let it go and accept apology. He needs to be canceled by moronic wokesters who one day will be canceled themselves for not being woke enough.

by Anonymousreply 43July 28, 2021 5:07 PM

R40 He says that as a straight main, he feels "belittled" that people think he's gay and that he and his (presumably straight) friends are trying to change that by skating to hip hop and pop music. Ironically, he skated to Rocketman last year.

by Anonymousreply 44July 28, 2021 5:07 PM

Skating is dominated by gay men. No lie there.

Nathan needs to take some cock so that he can get rid of the resentment that is stopping him from skating to more classical music.

by Anonymousreply 45July 28, 2021 5:10 PM

What was the interviewer’s lead-in question?

by Anonymousreply 46July 28, 2021 5:11 PM

R46 He was asked about skating's image as a "feminine" sport. No one asked about the gays. He's the one who made the immediate jump: effeminate = gay.

by Anonymousreply 47July 28, 2021 5:16 PM

What would Brian Boitano do?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 48July 28, 2021 5:20 PM

R48 Brian Boitano would skate in a military uniform to announce to the world that he's most definitely NOT gay.

by Anonymousreply 49July 28, 2021 5:42 PM

Does anyone remember Tollar Cranston? He had beautiful artistry.

by Anonymousreply 50July 28, 2021 5:51 PM

Amazing how at one time, US men were such a strong presence in singles skating. Now, they are so mediocre it’s not even funny. Well, Americans can’t dominate everything, I guess…

by Anonymousreply 51July 28, 2021 5:53 PM

There was a time when US men were interesting skaters. I love that Nathan keeps winning but he is so fucking boring.

by Anonymousreply 52July 28, 2021 5:57 PM

Has anyone seen this guy skate to pop and "hip hop"? He's not just boring but embarrassingly cringe. LMAO that he and his friends think this will transform figure skating.

by Anonymousreply 53July 28, 2021 6:08 PM

Some people go out of their way to find reasons for feeling offended. Gay publications and websites would go out of business if they didn't have the "offense of the week."

by Anonymousreply 54July 28, 2021 6:08 PM

This posting is DL bait: men's figure skating, allegations of homophobia or insensitivity, hurt feelings, being offended, criticism of gay media outlets like Outsports.

It's a virtual kiss and cry area at an ice skating competition.

by Anonymousreply 55July 28, 2021 10:17 PM

R14 & R19, I don't think Chen is a Trump supporter. He turned down an invitation to meet Trump at the White House a couple years ago.

by Anonymousreply 56July 29, 2021 12:45 PM

Break a leg, Nahan.

by Anonymousreply 57July 29, 2021 1:09 PM

Can everyone stop thinking Nahan is gay! He is exhausted.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 58July 29, 2021 1:39 PM

Chen is a Democrat, that fucking poster is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 59July 29, 2021 1:42 PM

R58 Of course he's exhausted. He alone shoulders the burden to Make Figure Skating Less Gay (one step at a time) Again.

by Anonymousreply 60July 29, 2021 2:27 PM

Sure sure you are so straight, bottom.

by Anonymousreply 61July 29, 2021 2:30 PM

I don't think his response was homophobic in any way, however it was a missed opportunity to challenge the question. Having said that, I've listened to Nathan's interviews and he's not really the butchest guy on skates, is he.

by Anonymousreply 62July 29, 2021 2:34 PM

Further proof that you can’t express an opinion today without offending someone and later feeling like you need to apologize. Ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 63July 29, 2021 2:36 PM

Chen is all technique, without the artistry. GOAT = Yuzuru Hanyu.

by Anonymousreply 64July 29, 2021 2:41 PM

R63 Hard to say what opinion he was expressing - you really have to piece that word salad together to figure it out. Does he go to Yale or Yale Total Landscaping?

by Anonymousreply 65July 29, 2021 2:53 PM

Homophobic Chenk

by Anonymousreply 66July 29, 2021 2:56 PM

[quote] He alone shoulders the burden to Make Figure Skating Less Gay (one step at a time) Again.

That shrimp is no Evan Lysacek! Hubba hubba!!

by Anonymousreply 67July 29, 2021 5:22 PM

I hope he apologizes for putting MSG in people's food and then lying about it.

by Anonymousreply 68July 29, 2021 5:49 PM

I wanna see his barefeet

by Anonymousreply 69July 29, 2021 11:01 PM

R69 since she is going by the Evan Lysacek playbook, you might be able to find her at your local Equinox steam room.

by Anonymousreply 70July 30, 2021 12:10 AM

He is hot as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 71July 30, 2021 12:11 AM

R71 is "fuck" homely and inarticulate?

by Anonymousreply 72July 30, 2021 12:18 AM

He didn't say anything wrong.

by Anonymousreply 73July 30, 2021 12:37 AM

R69, you don’t. Trust me. Skaters feet are ghastly looking.

by Anonymousreply 74July 30, 2021 3:32 PM

At leats he didn;t say it was a "homosexualist-dominated sport."

by Anonymousreply 75July 30, 2021 3:42 PM

Did French heterosexual wet dream Brian Joubert ever marry?

by Anonymousreply 76July 30, 2021 5:30 PM

R17 is probably offended by Colin Kaepernick

by Anonymousreply 77July 30, 2021 5:34 PM

R63, people who accuse others of being easily offended are usually the first ones to get bent out of shape by things like football players kneeling and "critical race theory"

Also, Dataloungers who accuse others of being easily offended are usually offended by harmless words like "cisgender" and they are offended by anything connected to trans people.

by Anonymousreply 78July 30, 2021 5:37 PM

It wasn't offensive in my opinion.

But even if it was "offensive", I wouldn't have been offended because I don't let what strangers think upset me. Feels like a waste of energy.

by Anonymousreply 79July 30, 2021 5:44 PM

This reminds me of when there's that one odd straight male fashion designer on Project Runway.

by Anonymousreply 80July 30, 2021 5:46 PM

R76, Brian Joubert is going to be 37 in September, but he still doesn't appear to be married.

He looks like he's gained some weight since he stopped skating:

by Anonymousreply 81July 31, 2021 9:42 AM

by Anonymousreply 82July 31, 2021 9:47 AM

Figure skating: Where even the straight men seem gay.

The only thing Miss Chen has to apologize for is not being attractive.

by Anonymousreply 83July 31, 2021 10:01 AM

Joubert should not have allowed himself to get so old so quickly.

by Anonymousreply 84July 31, 2021 9:24 PM

The French embrace aging better than Americans do.

by Anonymousreply 85August 1, 2021 2:09 PM

R54 so you’re including this guy for being offended that he’d be perceived as gay in your complaint then, right? Or are we saying that it’s acceptable to find homosexuality offensive.

by Anonymousreply 86August 1, 2021 2:26 PM

So Chen is not gay? That's a shock.

by Anonymousreply 87December 19, 2022 7:10 AM

Rice on Ice

by Anonymousreply 88December 19, 2022 7:39 AM

I actually thought his gold medal routine was the best male skating routine I've ever seen. That being said, I was very, very careful not to watch the mens skating growing up, for fear of being outed. Is Nathan Chen the Simone Biles of male skating? Perhaps, but he does nail the routines. Not everyone can have the artistry of Tonya Harding's overly bleached bangs, or Johnny Weir's overly dyed black hair.
