Silly lyrics, but such a great feel-good song

I have a video of my mom dancing to this song as part of her dance group in high-school! The version at R1

Back when Margot Oliverra was the bass player before she was replaced by Kathy Valentine

When pop music was actually fun and not Billie Eilish's creepy killer baby whispering in your ear.

We have Alanis Morrissette to thank for that, R6. I heard one of her songs in a grocery store the other day that I hadn't heard since it was new, then I tried to play it when I went back in the car. After 25 years of singers trying to imitate that, I couldn't finish it.

Richard Gottehrer produced the re-recorded version and their first album, Beauty and the Beat.
He found the band's playing so hopeless that he and his studio hands played all the instruments on the final tracks of that album.

Although this gives me a seizure to watch, I think the sound is pretty good. But I've used Zoom a million times and I really can't believe that this was recorded live.

"We Got The Beat" was The Go-Go's biggest hit single. It almost reached the hallowed #1 spot - #2 for 3 weeks and earned them a gold record.

The Go-Go's didn't last very long. Belinda Carlisle wanted to leave and pursue her own solo career and some of the members of the group were VERY angry with her.

I like the song, but now when I listen to the GoGos and Belinda Carlisle, the lead vocals sound really thin and tinny.

She never had much of a voice compared to Pat Benatar or Joan Jett.

It was the 80s!
Do you know how much aluminum the coke was cut with?!

I always thought it was a weak excuse that Belinda was the lead singer, so Jane shouldn't sing lead on any songs, which led to Jane quitting.
The Bangles, Heart, The Cars, Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones, U2, Smashing Pumpkins, REM all include songs sung by various band members on their albums.

As a gayling I bought and listened avidly to their big album....can't remember the name. But looking back and re-listening, they were one of the lightest weight and inconsequential 80's acts (to me). They sound terrible to me now.

I always thought it was “We Got Big Feet.”

It isn’t really about the quality of the music.
It’s sbout then having the balls to play music, get fucked up, and GET LAID!

Belinda and Michael Hutchence were fuck buddies for years and stayed under the radar

With that short butch haircut and being plump Belinda looked like a lesbian.

Today, instead of losing 30 pounds before her first solo album, Belinda would gain another 30, get two tattoo sleeves and come out as non-binary. While keeping her drug habit.

"Our Lips Are Sealed" for me.

^^me too, it’s my fave song by them. Have you heard the slow version by Moon Talk? It’s amazing.

Bitchlinda felt threatened. It ruined the band and killed Talk Show the album, which was a great album, on par with Beauty and the Beat.

I mean, they would have been disappointed no matter what but it was HOW Bitchlinda did it. The band hired a new member to replace Jane, made a whole bunch of commitments, and then Bitchlinda called a meeting and said, we're breaking up. Without talking to anyone else (except Charlotte, who she was working with on her new music).
She's always been a shady cunt. The threads we had here when they kicked Kathy out....most of that mess was Bitchlinda. It always is.

hearing the song sounded so transgressive at the time. . . . . . .

R31 I can't find it. Where did you hear it at?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 5, 2021 2:59 PM |
I like this version from Urgh! A Music War. I think this is where Belinda says she was her fattest.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 5, 2021 3:15 PM |
R34 oh, i first heard it in 2015, ABC used it to promote the Lily Rabe/Milo Ventimiglia show ‘“The Whispers.” I bought it off ITunes.
