Wentworth Miller: I’m Autistic

Wentworth Miller says he learned something about himself in quarantine ... he's autistic.

The "Prison Break" star just revealed he's been diagnosed with autism, something he says came as a shock but wasn't exactly a surprise.

Wentworth says he's approaching 1 year since he received his informal autism diagnosis, which was preceded by a self-diagnosis and followed by a formal diagnosis ... saying diagnosing autism is a "long, flawed process in need of updating," particularly when experts are diagnosing adults and not children.

He says being autistic isn't something he'd change about himself, because it's central to who he is and part of everything he's achieved in his career.

With his official diagnosis, Wentworth says he's not going to suddenly dedicate his celeb platform to autism awareness, because he doesn't know enough about autism.

He says he's re-examining his life through a new lens and doesn't want to talk over the autistic community or speak for them, admitting he's still ill-informed.

Looking good, daddy!

Wow, that message is perfect. For someone who is supposedly struggling with social cues, he just had a mic drop moment AND read some shady bitches for filth.

No more neurotypical roles for me. Their stories have been told!

by Anonymousreply 11July 27, 2021 6:41 PM

To me he has always looked so much like the late child actor George Winslow. Who obviously was autistic, as well.

Huh?

No shit.

by Anonymousreply 17July 27, 2021 7:28 PM

[quote]"Came as a shock, but not exactly a surprise"

I think he's surprised that his hunch was right. He wrote that he informally diagnosed himself. Going by how he ended his post on how in the past he was shown grace but not by all, it seems he knew that he was acting in ways aligned with being autistic or on the spectrum. Now he knows for sure he is.

by Anonymousreply 18July 27, 2021 7:42 PM

He's never shown ass or cock

by Anonymousreply 19July 27, 2021 7:48 PM

ASD is overdiagnosed so I am skeptical.

by Anonymousreply 20July 27, 2021 7:52 PM

That poor lad grew up thinking a short bus was a SUV.

by Anonymousreply 21July 27, 2021 7:59 PM

The diagnostic process is arduous, invasive and takes years, it’s true. The initial assessment forms alone comb your life for every last crumb of personal information.

Currently I am in stage 1 as an adult woman, and recently I was given the optimistic estimate that I should have a formal diagnosis on record in three to four years if all goes well and smoothly. For those with more complicated situations or who don’t luck out with conscientious assessors and doctors, it can take five to several years, or even a decade if the timing isn’t great or you want second and third opinions.

Years. I could easily be married with child, homeless, in w!tness protection, or dead by then.

by Anonymousreply 22July 27, 2021 8:09 PM

R20 out of interest, what do you are the true conditions for which ASD is wrongly identified?

by Anonymousreply 23July 27, 2021 8:11 PM

Did Wentworth actually use autism as an excuse for not really being gay?

by Anonymousreply 24July 27, 2021 8:16 PM

Like, OMG! Having a mental condition is so hot right now!

by Anonymousreply 25July 27, 2021 8:20 PM

It’s so annoying to me that celebrities are all coming out with this now. It’s actually fucking miserably difficult and confusing and lonely growing up with autism or Asperger’s—imagine the fear and loneliness and frustration you felt as a gay person trapped in a Hetero hellscape, and multiply it by five or ten times. It’s that bad. And generally it’s a secret you guard with your life, because the world is cruel and not designed for people with autism. It’s not something to invoke as a way to get sympathy or press or young fans’ approval.

by Anonymousreply 26July 27, 2021 8:26 PM

Wentworth is biracial, gay, autistic, suffers from fluctuating weight and is clinically depressed. The guy has it very hard. Yes, I know he's good-looking, rich and white-passing but that doesn't make his mental health better. I actually like him a lot.

by Anonymousreply 27July 27, 2021 8:31 PM

Does “autistic” even mean anything anymore? Aren’t we all on the spectrum?

by Anonymousreply 28July 27, 2021 8:36 PM

He was great on Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. His vocal inflections were distinctive and perfect for the character. Legends of Tomorrow pisses away all the good actors for lesbian tough chick porn.

by Anonymousreply 29July 27, 2021 8:40 PM

Honestly I don’t know what it means anymore. It feels like anyone socially awkward or different is declared or declaring themselves as having autism or ASD, or the ever vague, “on the spectrum”. I feel like it’s akin to the trans thing in that it becomes a catch-all diagnosis for other things that can’t/won’t be accepted/identified. Obviously it is real, but it feels like it undermines the conditions to a point that it becomes meaningless to most people—or they don’t take it seriously.

by Anonymousreply 30July 27, 2021 8:50 PM

I think more and more psychiatrists are moving away from diagnosing people because it's not that useful and it may not fix the root of their issues which usually stems from trauma. Self-diagnosis has gotten popular thanks to pop psychology websites and it leads to a spread of misinformation.

by Anonymousreply 31July 27, 2021 8:56 PM

His campy performance as Captain Cold was such a strange choice.

He's a beautiful man, and clearly quite intelligent, but he's a strange actor. I woish we could see what he can do if he moved away from action TV shows, given how striking he is.

by Anonymousreply 32July 27, 2021 8:59 PM

Would it help, Went, if I sucked your cock?

by Anonymousreply 33July 27, 2021 9:03 PM

I think Wentworth is just an introverted person with self-esteem issues. Some type of depression and OCD obviously. He reminds me of Colton Haynes. Even though he has good looks (and is aware of that) and was able to market them. He still feels very uncomfortable with himself and his body and holds himself to these high standards. I don't really see any autism spectrum symptoms in him. How many autistic people have succeeded in acting? I've heard of Daryl Hannah but who else?

by Anonymousreply 34July 27, 2021 9:04 PM

Agree that all these dozens of washed-up traumatised tv actors in their thirties do not have autism disorders. It’s like Demi Lovato with the Enby shit—it’s just actually EDINA Queen syndrome.

R34 the one famous known-autistic actor who I think truly does have an accurate diagnosis is Daryl Hannah. She is a good example of how it really comes over and what it looks like on-screen. If I had to guess, I’d say Liv Tyler has the same variety, too, though afaik she’s never been assessed.

Of course, ASD presents differently in men than in women, and presumably differently in straights than in gays.

1/3 of autistic kids are mentally retarded. It is one of the leading cause of MR in kids. So if kid has MR, autism is high on the differential.

It is a diagnosis that MUST present in childhood. Moderate to severe autism is not hard to diagnose at all in children. Most teachers are good at spotting FLKs (funny looking kids/autistics/ADHD.

These folks who get diagnosed as adults have milder spectrum illness.

Some people are weird. It may comfort some to say they are autistic to explain their weirdness.

by Anonymousreply 37July 27, 2021 9:27 PM

So many so called “ high functioning autistic” are self diagnosed and usually suffer from unhealthy narcissism.

by Anonymousreply 38July 27, 2021 9:28 PM

R19: I believe there is a very brief glimpse of his ass in the movie The Human Stain.

by Anonymousreply 39July 27, 2021 9:30 PM

R37, 🙌 yes

by Anonymousreply 40July 27, 2021 9:32 PM

Yea it's way overdiagnosed now. There is a fine line between someone having a few social issues and having an ASD. A lot of people self-diagnose so they can get away with being an asshole and saying shitty things.

by Anonymousreply 41July 27, 2021 9:33 PM

A lot of sociopaths r 41.

by Anonymousreply 42July 27, 2021 9:35 PM

I used to work at a local community clinic . I had a patient who was supposedly "autistic", he was just an asshole. He knew I was Jewish and every time he came into my office he started talking about the Nazis. I had enough and kicked him out and had him reassigned.

He also would come into the clinic and bang on the receptionist window, yelling "I'm autistic, you need to help me now."

This being an example of bad behavior not due to autism but due to asshatery.

by Anonymousreply 43July 27, 2021 9:48 PM

"Honestly I don’t know what it means anymore. It feels like anyone socially awkward or different is declared or declaring themselves as having autism or ASD, or the ever vague, “on the spectrum”. Part of it is that - people see more conditions and subconditions as being something to diagnose and identify with. I think these people genuinely feel different or not well - but so do 80% of people. At my job, two people use these sorts of self-diagnoses defensively. Can't have expectations of them or question them because they're on the spectrum and have a serious condition they're dealing with.

by Anonymousreply 44July 27, 2021 9:52 PM

R43, these types love to harp and antagonize to provoke anger or sadness . They have zero principles and live for derision and betrayal . Do not trust these people!

by Anonymousreply 45July 27, 2021 10:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 109July 28, 2021 2:26 AM

Wentworth tried to commit suicide in Princeton, when he also drew a comic strip poking fun at Cornell West's recently acquired position teaching a lot of white students and it became hugely controversial because no one knew he was half black. I believe there was a symposium called and Toni Morrison got involved and tried to get him expelled. She later wrote him a letter apologizing.

Anthony Hopkins just got diagnosed at like 80.

Is it over diagnosed? Someone I grew up with has a kid who is autistic supposedly. To me he just seems kind of odd like his mother was as a kid and the rest of her family was too.

[Quote] I think Wentworth is just an introverted person with self-esteem issues. Some type of depression and OCD obviously. He reminds me of Colton Haynes. Even though he has good looks (and is aware of that) and was able to market them. He still feels very uncomfortable with himself and his body and holds himself to these high standards.

Didn't they date??

Wow! I wonder why Wentworth didn't just say that his father was black when they challenged him about the cartoon he made. Cornel West actually didn't care because he understood the joke and he doesn't believe in censorship. It was everyone else that was offended and made assumptions about the intent of the cartoon that was just satire. He did send a letter to apologize to West when he was filming "The Human Stain" in 2003 and West showed up at the premiere and gave him a hug.

The truth of the matter is that when looking at the four areas of human development it is easy for us to understand the physical, emotional and mental and also what a disability looks like in those realms. When it comes to the social, it isn’t easy to understand beyond the old chestnut of “antisocial” behavior. It is the realm that is least understood and appreciated since humans are such social creatures and it’s hard to think that others don’t have the ease or fluency to understand that beyond the opposites of being shy vs outgoing. There’s gradually going to more understanding of social disabilities like autism going forward and it can only help to have prominent and well known people begin to open that world and bring some understanding to it to widen people’s perceptions.

[quote] I don't doubt it. A chunk of men in entertainment are autistic, but it's mostly directors and musicians - David Byrne (who openly stated it) and David Lynch (most likely) are on the spectrum.

I'll throw in Tim Burton in there too. Maybe Bob Dylan. I definitely think there's more autistic men in music, literature, directing and sports.

I just think it would be more difficult for an autistic man to be an actor. I think autistic women are better at mimicking emotions and that's why they may succeed more, also if they are very attractive (Daryl Hannah) that can help. Female characters in films tend to be written to more passive.

In a later interview he said he didn't want to use his family as an alibi but I'm guessing the fact that he was a suicidally depressed closeted 20-year-old may have played a factor.

I’ve made fun of him here in the past for trying to mimic Eartha in his portrayal of Captain Cold, never realizing that was his intention…until now!

Having said that, I thought Eartha’s Catwoman was fun, whereas I found Wentworth affecting her speech just fucking annoying. I’m sure Greg Berlanti was so grateful that W agreed to be in his show that he was like ‘sure, Wentworth…go with it!’

by Anonymousreply 148July 28, 2021 7:33 PM

There are a lot of misconceptions about the autism spectrum here. One is that autistic people don't desire social contact. That's not at all true. However, autistic people learn early in life that non-autistic people shy away from them because they don't seem to understand or react appropriately to social cues, nor do they understand humor, especially humor conveyed by timing, vocal expression and facial expression. Therefore, autistic people tend to self-isolate. What comes naturally to most humans CAN be taught, but it will never be reflexive - it will always have to be filtered through conscious analysis. In other words, if most humans see another human approaching with a big smile, they will respond instantly with a smile or a small wave. Instead, even the most high-functioning autistic person will have to go through an analytic process - "that person is smiling at me. That means that that person is friendly and non-threatening. I can smile back". That faster that this process takes place, the more convincing job the autistic person will do at fooling the people around him this his response is spontaneous. Temple Grandin says that the miracle of human beings is that they continue to learn and grown throughout life. (She is a very well-known author about this topic, being autistic herself). Autistic people can come closer and closer to reading and reacting to other people the longer they live, as long as they are willing to invest the time and energy to learning how to do what is instinctive to others.

Sorry to the person above who says that most self-proclaimed autistic people are just socially awkward as he is himself. Sorry, Mr. , but you ARE autistic if you are socially awkward. What do we mean when we say that someone is socially awkward?. We mean, a person who doesn't respond appropriately to greetings, to humor, whose voice is always too loud or too soft for the social context, the person who leaps in with an answer to a joke, where the timing is part of the punchline, the person who cannot ever find a way to comfort another person in distress, or who can't comprehend why a person might be in distress, or who always laughs at a joke 30 seconds after everyone else has laughed at it. There are also painfully shy people, but most people recognize easily the difference in someone who is shy vs. someone who is socially awkward.

There are certain red-flags in recognizing autism spectrum people. One is single-minded focus never broken by distraction. Another is obsession with a very narrow subject field where their knowledge will be exhaustive. Baseball statistics, airplane models, plant names, memorizing every Barbra Streisand album, the year it came out, and what songs are on it. (Substitute any other artist).

As a musician, I meet many autistic people in my profession. There are many in the sciences, many many many in the STEM fields, plenty in academia. Who cares? They are all just trying to get through life the best they can.

R149, your description of autism is quite bleak. Are you a robot? Sure sounds like it. You won’t admit that most autistics are retarded. It’s bad enough these so called high functioning ones are as fucked up as you describe. People like sincerity , kindness , lite hearted and compassion. People like people who can truly connect. Autism is brain damage period!

by Anonymousreply 152July 28, 2021 9:22 PM

R152 You are a terrible person, R149 did a great job in explaining autism. The R word deals with cognitive abilities, again autism is a spectrum on the social realm of human development, which isn’t to say there aren’t times when mental disabilities and social disabilities intertwine.

One of the biggest things that set back the understanding of autism was WWII, when Aspergers’ research and understanding of autism and it being a spectrum was suppressed and basically lost for decades, and the only more profound and extreme understanding of autism dominated the understanding of the disability. Then you had Bettelheim, a concentration camp survivor, who didn’t really have the proper credentials and training infiltrating the field with his destructive theories. It took decades of undoing these complications to even get autism grounded in the right approach.

by Anonymousreply 153July 28, 2021 10:06 PM

I sometimes wish I were autistic so that I could cause endless pain and emotional damage to everyone I meet and just not care. People might consider autism a curse. I consider compassion and a conscience to be curses, not autism.

MRI can best diagnose Autism. Sciencedaily has a summary research article provided by the Radiological Society of N. America. Its lenghty. I can post it but lots to read. If you are interested I suggest you check it out. Self diagnosis is not definitive, nor is a psychological test. The brain photography is what is definitive.

This is not autism. Autistic people do care in their own way and the knowledge that they upset and alienate people often causes them a lot of confusion. They can't easily put themselves into other people's shoes in a direct and intuitive way. But they can and do imagine what other people must feel like and many of them learn about human behavior by careful study and rote.

It's not unlike being good at math naturally vs having to study formulas and memorize multiplication tables over and over until you get it. You may both get a high grade on the math final, but only one of you gets math intuitively and one of you will never find it easy even if you pass all the tests.

A lot of incels are autistic

by Anonymousreply 177July 29, 2021 3:14 AM

Good Lord, the ignorance on display here is frightening.

Autism is a spectrum. Many autistic people, especially women, are very good at understanding other people's emotions, but have a hard time understanding their own. They may be hyper-sensitive and empathic, but hide it and don't show it, because they are not always sure of how to show that in a socially acceptable way.

Of course there are people with Autism who are assholes because they are human. There are horrible people who are autistic, just like neurotypical people. That does not mean that autism = asshole. Quite the opposite in fact. Some of the most caring people I have ever known have been autistic, who are kind to others and cannot understand why others are mean and cruel. In fact, some autistic people are in danger of abuse from others because they can't understand why someone would behave badly towards them, why someone would lie, or behave dishonestly.

In any case, Wentworth Miller has done a good thing in sharing his autism diagnosis. Perhaps the stereotypes can die once people realize that their stereotypes are wrong and cause harm to others.

by Anonymousreply 178July 29, 2021 3:22 AM

He'd look at me, look at the cast, and say, "Well, what DO you want to do?" After three weeks of me having the cast, he said he wanted to break up with me because "I wasn't any fun any more". How can someone not comprehend the limitations of a broken leg????

In fact, some autistic people are in danger of abuse from others because they can't understand why someone would behave badly towards them, why someone would lie, or behave dishonestly.

Yes, exactly.

Personally, I can attest to this. I have been exploited and mistreated by others all my life, because by nature I am overly trusting and too blindly naive to red flags & tells. Because I’m thought to be an intelligent and high-functioning individual, though, no-one has looked out for me in this regard, believing I can handle it easily by myself.

For example, school classmates used to talk cruelly about me and gaslight behind my back, and I didn’t find out until graduation. Someone in College led me on romantically, only it turned out it was just a time-killing sick little joke on their part and I did not see it coming. My last employer was stealing from me for over a year before I realised what was happening. By now, all of this has left me very jaded, very depressed, and very averse to human interaction.

With time and experience and reflection, my detector for abuse & bullshit is becoming better. But it’s still not got the acute strength and sensitivity it should, especially for an adult woman. There’s a lot I feel I can’t do to get ahead in life, because my safety is compromised by my own social gaps, I.e. dating and sleeping around, making opportunistic career moves, networking. Sometimes, it makes me feel like a silly teenage girl trapped in a grown woman’s body.

Autism is extremely rare. But terrible parenting is common sadly.

by Anonymousreply 208July 29, 2021 4:12 PM

Most young children who become autistic start to development normally during the first year of life and meet milestones and bond well with their caretaker. Then between 12 to 18 months there is a very noticeable shift that in retrospect parents can distinguish a before and after moment of something irrevocably changing in their child. It is precisely this that the antivaxxers latch on to, as of course they see a completely scientifically unfounded cause and effect with the regular vaccination schedule of young children.

What are these people getting out of the autism diagnosis? Are they getting some kind of disability payment? I just don't get it. Autism is scary as hell. R193, do you understand humor? Do you understand abstract reasoning? You are not on the spectrum. I have similarities to you and I am about as far from autistic as a person can be. I think and think and think (well, I used to. Now I'm all pilled up) and I don't understand why people are mean. I try to understand what motivates others. That's not being autistic, that's called being interested in psychology. Trying to understand the human condition.

Here's a tidbit for everyone: About fifteen years ago when autism was REALLY big, really in the news, this happened: My cat had a lump on his back. Took him to the vet and one of the vets told us something interesting. She checked to see if he had had a vaccine from a single dose bottle or a multi dose bottle. Apparently when you get a vaccine, it is either drawn from a bottle with one dose in the bottle or a bunch of doses. The themerisol (sp?) mercury stuff was used as a preservative in the multi-dose bottles. The nurse or whoever was supposed to shake the bottle before every dose was drawn from the bottle, but often they didn't. So the mercury would settle to the bottom of the bottle and the last dose from that bottle would be full of mercury. This caused tumors in some cats, Anyway, the lump turned out fine but we learned a lot. I'm not saying that all autism is caused by this. I think autism is a bunch of different issues lumped into the ...

by Anonymousreply 223July 29, 2021 5:33 PM

...a lot of different issues lumped into the same diagnosis. Some was probably from the vaccine issue, some is from old sperm, some is from pre-term births where the brain didn't develop correctly, some is just part of mental retardation, some is hereditary.

But autism is no joke. It's not just being a little shy or awkward. Autistic people don't understand or care about emotions. They don't TRY to understand motives and emotions. That doesn't even occur to them.

I wanna know more about his uncut cock :)

by Anonymousreply 231July 29, 2021 6:24 PM

Is it a false rumor?

by Anonymousreply 232July 29, 2021 7:04 PM

R229, see Sally Anne Doll Test. Autism and Down Syndrome are VERY different.

by Anonymousreply 233July 29, 2021 7:11 PM

Anyone else ever feel like they are living in the film Spartacus?? You know that that bit, when everyone is saying..No, I'm Spartcus, No, I'm Spartacus.

This week the flava' of the month is.. I'm autistic, No, i'm Autistic, NO I"M AUTISTIC.

Show me your MRI results & DNA results, then I might listen..

" Many people with autism have abnormalities at a specific site on the 16th chromosome known as 16p11.2. Deletion or duplication of a small piece of chromosome at this site is one of the most common genetic causes of autism spectrum disorder.

"People with deletions tend to have brain overgrowth, developmental delays and a higher risk of obesity," said study author Julia P. Owen, Ph.D., a brain researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, who was at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) during the study. "Those with duplications are born with smaller brains and tend to have lower body weight and developmental delays."

by Anonymousreply 234July 29, 2021 7:29 PM

Here's more of the MRI studies. Autism is like being pregnant..either you are or you aren't.

The results showed some striking differences in the brain structures of deletion and duplication carriers compared with non-carriers. For instance, the corpus callosum, the fiber bundle that connects the left and right sides of the brain, was abnormally shaped and thicker in the deletion carriers but thinner in the duplication carriers, compared to the control group and familial non-carriers.

Other stark differences were apparent. The deletion carriers displayed features of brain overgrowth, including the extension of the cerebellum, the bottom back part of the brain, toward the spinal cord. The duplication carriers showed characteristics of brain undergrowth, such as decreased white matter volume and larger ventricles -- the cavities in the brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid.

When the researchers compared cognitive assessments to imaging findings, they found that the presence of any imaging feature associated with the deletion carriers -- such as a thicker corpus callosum -- indicated worse daily living, communication and social skills, compared to deletion carriers without any radiological abnormalities. For the duplication carriers, the presence of decreased white matter and corpus callosal volume and increased ventricle size was associated with decreased full-scale and verbal IQ scores, compared to duplication carriers without tho

[quote] Autistic people don't understand or care about emotions. They don't TRY to understand motives and emotions. That doesn't even occur to them.

This is wrong. You are not informed or knowledgeable on the subject. Perhaps you had a negative interaction with someone on the Autism spectrum, but you can't use that to generalize about everyone with Autism.

by Anonymousreply 236July 29, 2021 7:46 PM

R236, that is an opinion piece.

I don't get you guys. Is it somehow cool to think you're autistic?

by Anonymousreply 237July 29, 2021 7:57 PM

^^^No, no one is saying that. The above is not an opinion piece, it's a recap of research done on this subject. Autistic people are not more special, better, or whatever than anyone else. But autistic people deserve to not be stereotyped by badly informed people about who they are and what they are capable of or not.

I don't understand why some posters like yourself seem to have such a hard time with having your stereotypes challenged. Asking you to learn more, challenge your biases, and stop stereotyping people is not harming you.

by Anonymousreply 238July 29, 2021 8:03 PM

They absolutely think they are special and gifted . Totally delusional

by Anonymousreply 239July 29, 2021 8:07 PM

Okay R238, peace. Nah, I can't stop. Having my sterotypes challenged? It's a diagnosis. It's a thing. It's not whatever you want it to be. Like an above poster said, you can't be kind of pregnant. You are or you're not. If you're going to broaden the diagnosis to apply to half the population, then it won't mean anything. It's a handicap. It's not a good thing. It's not like a being black or being a woman, where we need to have better understanding.

by Anonymousreply 240July 29, 2021 8:42 PM

You can't be kind of pregnant but you can be severely dyslexic, or just innately terrible at spelling, or you're okay at spelling, or you're a spelling bee champion who can spell anything.

Social skills understanding is exactly like that. Everyone has a degree of competency that is a combination of innate facility and learned behavior. It's not like there are 2 kinds of people in the world: those with zero social skills and social wizards. It's a spectrum and it's no small irony that the people screeching about autistic people are the ones who are being too literal and obtuse to see that.

by Anonymousreply 241July 29, 2021 9:01 PM

R241,an aspie gaslighting and demonstrating borderline tendencies. A lot of parallels between the two conditions.

by Anonymousreply 242July 29, 2021 9:54 PM

I'm not on the spectrum at all, R242, but you sure do sound hyperfixated all over this post.

by Anonymousreply 243July 29, 2021 10:00 PM

Sure, Jan .

[quote]He still lives in NYC? Maybe he's going to retire?

I thought I read on one of his now-deleted Instagram posts that he had moved back to LA, presumably to try to get more work. I don't think he's lived in New York for a while?

R243, loves her projections.

He was living close to NYC until fairly recently. His mother lives in Westchester County near the CT state line. She was recovering from an illness (I think cancer) and Wentworth was looking after her.

by Anonymousreply 247July 29, 2021 10:22 PM

It's interesting to me that the loudest voices calling autistic people damaged, cold, unable to feel empathy are the ones demonstrating their own damage, their own coldness, and their own inability to feel empathy. Pot to kettle.......

by Anonymousreply 248July 29, 2021 10:26 PM

Ha ha r248, keep blasting off that reflection in the mirror.

by Anonymousreply 249July 29, 2021 10:28 PM

I agree with r248. A lot of unhappy self-hating queens on DL.

by Anonymousreply 250July 29, 2021 10:36 PM

Downs are usually sweethearts, very affectionate and empathetic. Autistics however, are generally aloof, mean spirited and consumed by their own weirdness. And that’s the so called high functioning ones. The retarded ones are a life of screeching, destroying property and all out misery.

by Anonymousreply 251July 29, 2021 10:40 PM

Aspergers is such an ugly word.

As silly as Hambergers.

I refuse to use it as a label.

by Anonymousreply 252July 29, 2021 10:48 PM

R240 Stop with the strawman arguments. Nobody wrote anywhere on this thread that having autism is a good thing. It's a developmental disability that can cause difficulties for people and negatively impact their lives. However, with support, people with autism that require moderate or minimal support can learn to manage this disability and succeed in life despite it.

One way to support people with autism is to stop with the stereotypes, actually learn about autism and the autism spectrum, and treat each individual with respect. That's it.

by Anonymousreply 253July 30, 2021 12:00 AM

Fuck you r253! Don’t tell us what to do

by Anonymousreply 254July 30, 2021 12:07 AM

R253, it's an obvious troll, just ignore.

by Anonymousreply 255July 30, 2021 12:19 AM

^^^You are wise to remind me, thank you.

by Anonymousreply 256July 30, 2021 12:20 AM

I think some of the more virulent posters here may be coming at their ideas from Malcom Gladwell. I was forced to read one of his books for work and as a librarian I was appalled at how he misuses information and research to construct a narrative to support whatever grandiose idea he has. He is a hack and I’m truly disturbed by the audience he has and worshipful followers who are the very definition of sheep.

by Anonymousreply 257July 30, 2021 12:24 AM

Gladwell is not far from truth .

by Anonymousreply 258July 30, 2021 12:29 AM

R248 yep I put that person on ignore and literally all the ugliest rantiest vitriol on this post disappeared. Weird as fuck.

[quote]He was living close to NYC until fairly recently. His mother lives in Westchester County near the CT state line. She was recovering from an illness (I think cancer) and Wentworth was looking after her.

Yeah he'd been living in Connecticut for years. I had heard, I think from another DL thread, that it was actually Alzheimer's his mother had, though she may have also had cancer given her age. But I think he posted on Instagram that he had planned to move to LA, which I think is where he is now aside from his stint on L&O. I'm not sure what happened there.

by Anonymousreply 259July 30, 2021 12:44 AM

Good job!

by Anonymousreply 260July 30, 2021 3:38 AM

He is, as I expected from his late Instagram posts, a fully functioning person yet.

by Anonymousreply 272August 2, 2021 1:35 AM

A lot of people who are awkward and shy have jumped on the autism bandwagon. Just like a lot of fat and lazy people jumped on the fibromyalgia train.

R273 There’s a train, how do I get on it and is it free for the Fybroids?

by Anonymousreply 278August 2, 2021 5:16 AM

Interesting that his most famous public relationship was 13 years ago with Luke Macfarlane, who has severe learning disabilities and is extremely dyslexic. Dyslexia is one of the developmental disorders that also qualifies as "neurodivergent" along with autism, ADHD, OCD and a few others.

by Anonymousreply 279August 4, 2021 8:33 PM

Hm, maybe they felt so safe just being together.

Damaged people are often drawn to each other because they wrongly believe they can heal each other.

by Anonymousreply 281August 4, 2021 10:51 PM

Being with Luke calmed him down because Luke's so laid back and a nice guy! THEY'RE very cute.

by Anonymousreply 282August 4, 2021 11:34 PM

Watching a couple of his interviews on Youtube.... he's very intelligent, thoughtful, very articulate and self aware...when answering questions. I don't see autism, but then, I'm not qualified to make that a true determination. That would be the furthest opinion I would have of him.

by Anonymousreply 283August 5, 2021 12:35 AM

Autistic people can be all those things, but I have noticed that he was painfully shy in interviews, didn't always make eye contact, and if you've followed him on social media at all, has a very very quirky sense of humor and tends to take the things people on social media say to him very literally. He once posted an entire essay about how he didn't like it when people left comments calling him "sweetheart" because "he isn't sweet."

by Anonymousreply 284August 5, 2021 1:40 AM

R284, you make that like he’s endearing. What an exhausting asshole . And remember, many autistics use their autism as an excuse to be an asshole or creep .

by Anonymousreply 285August 5, 2021 1:44 AM

One day the cops will be going through Wentworth's freezer and it will make Jeffrey Dahmer look like a vegan.

by Anonymousreply 286August 5, 2021 2:50 AM

R283 Obviously! Wentworth got a B.A. at Princeton..

by Anonymousreply 287August 5, 2021 2:57 AM

He’s adorable and seems highly functional…he’d survived the rigors of filming and film promotion. If he’d not had decent interpersonal skills, he’d have been a tv and film extra, with cater-waitering as his primary job.

by Anonymousreply 288August 5, 2021 2:57 AM

R288

I couldn’t agree with you more. "he’d survived the rigors of filming and film promotion. " This sums up everything.

by Anonymousreply 289August 5, 2021 5:05 AM

He's not autistic. He's introverted and overly sensitive...as many actors are.

Yes, you have to have great interpersonal skills to be more than an extra.

by Anonymousreply 294August 8, 2021 7:15 AM

Was there like someone from the makeup department whose job is was to help scrub him down after the full body tattoo filming?

Does Wentworth like blue?

by Anonymousreply 297August 8, 2021 7:26 AM

I completely missed this thread. Only today did I learn Wentworth is autistic.

by Anonymousreply 298August 18, 2022 5:31 AM

I think Tom Cruise is autistic. He doesn't seem capable of nuance and goes extreme in everything whether it's method acting, religion and PR. Hyperfocuses a lot. When he was younger, he had difficulty giving eye contact and speaking clearly. Still very introverted and doesn't seem to have any friends whatsoever. Being very goodlooking of course deflects from these qualities makes it easier to pass.

by Anonymousreply 299August 18, 2022 12:51 PM

[quote]I think Tom Cruise is autistic.

It wouldn't surprise me.

by Anonymousreply 300August 19, 2022 4:02 AM

The autism spectrum is very broad. Many of us born before 1990 would probably have been diagnosed as being on the spectrum in childhood. Instead, we were the kids everyone just considered "weird", and we were shunned and mistreated.

by Anonymousreply 301August 19, 2022 5:07 AM

R301 I agree with you. Wentworth is a very intelligent, funny, charismatic guy and looked great in 2021 on L&):SVU. I enjoy seeing him on things so I hope he comes out of retirement one of these days.
