My parents were born in the 1940s, and we listened to the radio quite a bit growing up (1980s and 1990s). They exposed me and my siblings to the music from their youth (50s, 60s, and 70s). I grew to love all of that.
Later, I found (and loved) 1930s & 1940s Big Band,1950s Cool Jazz, and Bebop on my own, as a result of playing much of it in school. Sometimes, I even fantasized about life in those decades...but that's material for another thread or three.
This never fails to get me moving.

This was my friend David's "up 'n' at 'em" song, as he called it.

Ugh. One bit of machine made pop schlock after another.
You people are all so hopelessly low brow. Are you sure you're gay?

[quote] One bit of machine made pop schlock after another.
Technically, nearly every musical instrument is a machine (an apparatus using or applying mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite function and together performing a particular task). A piano is a machine. Even a guitar is a machine. So your complaint is basically that the music is not made on the machines you prefer.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 28, 2021 1:35 PM |
R45, any time you start an argument with "technically," your mission is doomed. You give away in the very first word that your argument is going to be a stretch, that it all rests only a small kernel of truth. It's never persuasive. Never. A machine is a device of great precision and efficiency, designed for a particular task. An instrument is a tool that a person can use to achieve something much greater.
As instruments, a hammer and a flute are more closely aligned than either would be to a machine.

You must be new here R43
DL music threads ALWAYS devolve into Cringe-Pop fests with lots of bad 70s and 80s pop hits that Basic Bitches loved.
It does put the Frau-obsession into perspective though, as you realize these are the same songs that Ginny In Billing and her friends would choose.
"Celebration"
SMH
It's the poster child for cheesy wedding songs and a meme in its own right, but I suspect whoever posted it is not the only DLer who loves it.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 28, 2021 1:46 PM |
I’m not sure the DL taste makers will allow this…but Curtis Mayfield’s Move On Up is a great motivator
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 28, 2021 1:57 PM |
This is poppy and driving enough for DL tastes but still within this century (08 or 09 IIRC). And the lyrics are sort of funny/ironic
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 28, 2021 2:05 PM |
I always thought that any 60 seconds of this song would've made a great theme song to NBC's Chuck tv show (better than what they had).

Cathy's record label was being dumb for saying the rise of grunge in the mid 90s was reason enough for shelving this great album.
Why pay for it at all? They already knew she wasn't a grunge act.

911 was such a fun song complete with a PeeWee Herman cameo...

My favorite Bananarama song. During winter in PE, boys stayed on one side of the gym for wrestling, the girls did aerobics. This was one of the songs for their daily routine, & I still remember the teacher & class had to say “whew” right near the opening. Oh how I wished I could’ve switched gym sides…

Madonna has a writing credit on this Marilyn Martin album. I still have no idea how they got along well enough to work together.
They seem like oil & water.

Are you trying to call out a song R235?
None of these posted songs have made me want to slit my wrists or anything.
Some seem like they're 51% cheerful with some depressing moments mixed in certain places.
