Home & Away’s Dieter Bummer Dead To Us At 45

His death is not considered suspicious, so sadly we know what that means.

He was still handsome beyond his teen idol days. He was an early crush. I loved Shane and Angel.

I don’t know her.

by Anonymousreply 1July 26, 2021 10:46 AM

Was he a homo?

by Anonymousreply 2July 26, 2021 10:47 AM

^ no, but did have a few addiction problems.

by Anonymousreply 3July 26, 2021 10:53 AM

It's not easy losing the bloom of youth and becoming middle-aged.

by Anonymousreply 4July 26, 2021 11:48 AM

Aww, how sad. Depression is a terrible thing. I always wonder what could have made someone feel that their life was still okay enough to stick around? One more friend? Changing surroundings? Different level of success? Really tragic

by Anonymousreply 5July 26, 2021 11:54 AM

That was autocorrect, r5. Oops. One final indignity for poor Dieter BRUMMER.

by Anonymousreply 6July 26, 2021 12:00 PM

Shane's death was the saddest TV moment of my childhood! To eight-year-old me, he and Angel were the world's most iconic couple. The actor who played Jesse (Ben Unwin) died less than three years ago and it sounded as though that was suicide as well.

by Anonymousreply 7July 26, 2021 12:00 PM

Yes, Ben killed himself in August 2019.

by Anonymousreply 8July 26, 2021 12:18 PM

I read a rather depressing article years ago about how Melissa George was doing well in Hollywood while Dieter was a window cleaner.

by Anonymousreply 9July 26, 2021 12:59 PM

Don't know who this is, but becoming famous is very isolating. You end up in an ivory tower. So many actors suffer with depression caused by loneliness. Friendships are transactional in that town and not authentic or deep and meaningful. That's why they turn to drugs and alcohol. A lot of times they abandon Hollywood and return to their old lives back in their home towns. Having worked in that business, I saw it all the time, and one of the reasons I left.

by Anonymousreply 10July 26, 2021 1:13 PM

Ben Unwin was a hottie.

by Anonymousreply 11July 26, 2021 2:22 PM

And a gay one at that, R11

by Anonymousreply 12July 26, 2021 4:03 PM

Supposedly Dieter and Melissa loathed each other.

by Anonymousreply 13July 26, 2021 4:38 PM

Yes, R13, it was all over the magazines at the time. I also remember reading an interview with an Australian actress - can't remember her name - who appeared in H&A for a few episodes and said the whole cast was nice to her except Melissa George.

by Anonymousreply 14July 26, 2021 4:47 PM

Like a lot of Australian actors, he had a side hustle going on.

by Anonymousreply 15July 26, 2021 5:14 PM

[quote] Like a lot of Australian actors, he had a side hustle going on.

I have Matt Damon. Who was his?

by Anonymousreply 16July 26, 2021 5:15 PM

Side hustle = second job.

by Anonymousreply 17July 26, 2021 5:24 PM

When Shane died, he was a teenager who already had a stepson and a pregnant wife. And the character was considered a role model. How things change...

by Anonymousreply 18July 26, 2021 9:36 PM

[quote] I read a rather depressing article years ago about how Melissa George was doing well in Hollywood while Dieter was a window cleaner.

It must be depressing that this teen show has parade of new hopeful wannabes every month trying for fame.

Chris Hemsworth is doing very, very well in Hollywood while lots of them have fallen into obscurity and two of them committed the final act.

by Anonymousreply 19July 26, 2021 9:53 PM

R10, spot on !! And it’s sad. The actual work in Hollywood is fun and well paid ..The fame part sucks

by Anonymousreply 20July 26, 2021 9:59 PM

[quote]Supposedly Dieter and Melissa loathed each other.

Didn't everyone hate her? It was funny how she had to return to Australian TV with her tail between her legs a few years back for an interview to tell her tale of woe of her custody battle with her husband. During the interview she even apologized for her snobbery against "Home and Away".

by Anonymousreply 21July 26, 2021 10:03 PM

At one time Home and Away was consldered, like Neighbours to be the nadir for serious actors. I knew an actress who came out of NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) who told me she would only work in the theatre but ended up doing short stints on both shows. She made a few films but was never the lead and is now out of the biz.

Anorexia is such a bummer. Stop all dieters from harming themselves!

by Anonymousreply 23July 26, 2021 10:09 PM

I wonder if this former teen idol committed suicide because he was going bald?

Just like Heath Ledger committed suicide because he was going bald.

by Anonymousreply 24July 26, 2021 10:10 PM

Doubtful.

by Anonymousreply 25July 26, 2021 10:11 PM

Ben went bald too.

by Anonymousreply 26July 26, 2021 10:14 PM

Ben looked more attractive bald than with hair.

by Anonymousreply 27July 26, 2021 10:17 PM

Perhaps he was immersing himself in his German heritage—

[quote] What keeps all living things busy and in motion is the striving to exist.

But when existence is secured, they do not know what to do: that is why the second thing that sets them in motion is a striving to get rid of the burden of existence, not to feel it any longer, 'to kill time', i.e. to escape boredom.”

by Anonymousreply 28July 27, 2021 12:17 AM

^ All of that is supposed to be the one quote, taken from Schopenhauer.

But Graham Greene was supposed to be the same. He was so eager to 'escape boredom' that he travelled around to danger zones in the 'Third World' and was able to observe revolutions, famines and crises close up.

I think getting the shit beat out of you and not being able to leave the country with your children is a reasonable excuse for her bad behaviour during the interview.

[Quote] At one time Home and Away was consldered, like Neighbours to be the nadir for serious actors.

Margot Robbie would be the latest actress from Neighbours to become a-list. All the rest are on CW shows like Adelaide Kane, Caitlin Stase or Dichen Lachman.

by Anonymousreply 30July 27, 2021 7:02 AM

Apparently it was suicide. His window cleaning business went under and he was living with his parents. I am guessing that he felt like he was a failure?

by Anonymousreply 31July 27, 2021 8:01 AM

Was it Keto that did him in?

by Anonymousreply 32July 27, 2021 8:03 AM

It's reported that in addition he'd ended a romantic relationship earlier this year.

by Anonymousreply 33July 27, 2021 8:04 AM

Also Sydney is in lockdown and I don't think window cleaning is considered an essential service so the work dried up.

by Anonymousreply 34July 27, 2021 8:11 AM

Very sad when anyone gets to a point where they can’t see any option but taking their own life. I watched an interview with him from 2018 today and he seemed like a very sweet man. Someone left this comment on The Age’s article about his death and it’s quite beautiful I think:

‘In the cold, dark light of night, people can believe this life is all too much. In the depths of despair, people can see no upside. But tomorrow, the sun will rise and there will be many moments even throughout a single day, that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Depression is a dwelling on the downside of our human existence. Life is a roller coaster for almost everyone except the empathy deprived and those who don’t engage in self reflection.

The people we lose through depression, are the people this world needs now. They are sensitive people who carry an unfair burden for a troubled world. Come through the night and celebrate the sunrise of a new day, a new adventure.

Goodbye Dieter, and condolences to his family and friends.’

R35. That’s lovely, thank you.

by Anonymousreply 36July 27, 2021 8:44 AM

He was a window cleaner for high rise buildings. Obviously the abseiling aspect is dangerous, and likely something he sought out.
