Vanity Fair 2003 “Raining Teens” Issue
I remember this issue when it came out and it was a must have for me! I was a teen myself and loved all these girls! The issue put the hot teen female stars they also felt would have a long career ahead of them.
They’ve all had their moment, and some had comebacks after career downs (I’m looking at you, Mandy Moore).
I do want Lindsay and Amanda to have a comeback, honestly.

I hate how Raven was pushed to background in this shoot. That's So Raven was much bigger than the Olsen twins and Mandy Moore at the time. Hilary in the center makes sense because Lizzie McGuire was a huge franchise and she just got off the success of the movie. Gilmore Girls was a big show (for the time) but Alexis wasn't a teenager. She does look super-young for her age though.

R29 this isn’t a reality star. These are two girls who worked since 9 months old and became household names all over the world by 3. By the final season of Full House they were making $150k an episode each, at 8 years old. They released a shit ton of merchandise as kids and teens, from clothes to video games to CDs. In 2001 their products brought in over $970 million, and they surpassed $1 billion the following year…
They now own TONS of property in NYC, Paris, Spain, LA, Miami etc.
They’re rich. This isn’t some reality star claiming they made $1 billion off of makeup.

I wanna know what happened to them.

R21 The Olsen twins mostly targeted elementary and middle school aged girls. Their careers were built on merchandise and direct-to-video releases. Once their big budget Hollywood film New York Minute flopped, their careers were over. Yes, they built a fashion empire and became tabloid fodder but they weren't icons to teenagers at the same extent that Hilary, Lindsay and Raven were. Also, Mandy got more famous from doing movies like "A Walk To Remember", "Saved" and "Tangled" but she wasn't nearly as big an idol as Britney, Christina and even Jessica and Ashlee who were famous for... other reasons.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | July 26, 2021 1:07 AM

R35 but they were the most powerful teens in Hollywood. The issue isn’t about the age group these girls are aimed toward, it’s Hollywood’s most powerful teens, and they were at the top then.
Their career didn’t end with NYMinute, they chose not to make another movie because they feared they would lose a lot of money. They financed their own film. The film “flopped” in that it didn’t make a profit. They didn’t lose much of anything either. They made back what they spent pretty much.
Ashley decided to quit acting and stick with Fashion, and Mary-Kate did a few acting projects before deciding to focus on Fashion also.
They wouldn’t even come back to Fuller House for just a cameo.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 26, 2021 1:16 AM

Dualstar was owned by Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen. They are very rich women that seem damaged and want nothing to do with Hollywood. They focus on their clothing line and perfumes and that’s it.

It's kind of amazing looking at these photos and remembering how fame is certainly fleeting.
Either they didn't get enough brakes (Mandy, Hillary), had personal issues of their own creation (Lindsay), personal issues not of their own creation (Amanda), never rose above TV star (Raven, Alexis), left the business completely (the Olsen twins). Heck, if you look at the other photos from the issue, I'm sure many people wouldn't even be able to remember what some of their names are. Lacey Chabert, Gregory Smith, Christina Millian? I haven't seen any of them in years. Aaron Carter and Bow Wow only appear in the news when they did something controversial.
Shia had a pretty good run until he started acting nutso.
The Harry Potter kids are still known even if they don't seem to work all that much in things people see.
It reminds me of the "who will be the most famous from the cast of Stranger Things" thread. I said that people usually have no clue who will be around a decade from now and it's never quite who you think it is. I really do believe that.
Solange Knowles is in the same issue. She drops an artsy album that gets critical acclaim every few years. She went on to win a Grammy Award.
Keep turning the pages and you'll run into these three: Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Padalecki and Kaley Cuoco. They're probably the people that have worked the most and Kaley and Jared are rolling in it.
(I'm not talking about money with any of these people. We know the Olsens have the most money and they're likely followed by Kaley.)
None of those people made the cover.

Yes, a few of them have had some success again over the past few years. Evan Rachel Wood with Westworld, Mandy Moore with This Is Us, Alexis Bledel with Handmaids Tale (which won her an Emmy), Hilary Duff has been on Younger for a few years etc.

[quote]Mandy had a major comeback with This Is Us, alongside Milo inside that same issue.
More like Milo went from Gilmore Girls to Heroes, did a few movies and then This is Us. He never had to make a comeback. He's worked pretty much every year. I loved Mandy growing up.
[quote]same with Evan Rachel Wood, with Westworld
She had a gap between True Blood (which she popped up on occasion) and Westworld where she wasn't doing anything remotely remarkable. As for Westworld, it gets a lot of attention, but it has only aired 3 seasons in 6 years. Why, I don't know? That's what I meant by not enough breaks.
She and Mandy should have been bigger stars than they are.
The second question on Google when you search for Hilary is asking what happened to her. Yes, she's on Younger but it's on TV Land. And yes, Alexis was great (I no longer watch it) in Handmaids Tale which is also not her show unlike Gilmore Girls which was her show.
My point was, the people who worked the most consistently, became the biggest stars, and made the most money weren't the ones who were featured with the exception of the Olsens who don't act anymore. None of them became a Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, or even a Jennifer Lawrence but at least some of them had long-running series and in Kaley's case made a lot of money on an extremely popular show before producing her own.

All of them lived pretty clean lives too and are consistently working. Except for Lindsay and The Olsens who are drug addicts. The Olsens at least have "fuck you" money from their almost 20 years of nonstop child labor and they built a fashion empire that caters to a wealthy minority. They can blow off money off on coke and still have stuff left over. Amanda has a mental illness sadly, she is lucky her parents intervened before it was too late and she retired early bu with all the money she made.

Raven would be such a bigger star if she came up around now, a la Lizzo, Nicole Byer and other fat black women. Her and Amanda Bynes had amazing comedic timing in their prime, better than many other adults at that time. It's a terrible shame they didn't star in a big movie or sitcom together. Idk, something changed with Raven post-view, post-come out, and post-30
by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 26, 2021 5:39 AM

Raven was a big star in the 90s and 2000s . She was pretty on par with the Olsens and Macaulay Culkin in the early 90s with the overexposure. She was on Disney as a teen and was pretty popular in the mid-2000s, I think things that happened behind the scenes messed her up. Given the problems that her costars Orlando and Kyle had. I don't think Raven wasn't affected but she was in the industry since she was a baby that she was already hardened. I imagine like most child stars who have been acting since toddlers often because of stage parents, Raven grew resentful and bitter of how she didn't have a normal childhood. That's why she acted so juvenile and immature into her late 20s and early 30s. Anyway, she seems more at peace now since she got married, her wife is pretty and seems to adore her.

Well in Jared's case i would put it down to luck. Who could have predicted Supernatural getting such a rabid fanbase. They have done very well thanks to the convention circuit. And Kaley works best as a sitcom actress. But i'm glad The Flight Attendant was a success.

Hilary was a coke addict with an eating disorder. And her relationship with Joel Madden would not fly today.

The US, white people were so repulsed at the idea of mixing races that they passed laws to segregate the races socially and economically, made anyone with mixed heritage a "person of color" and forced them into segregation away from "pure white" people and made interracial sex and marriage a crime. The One-Drop Rule is considered a laughably stupid concept in pretty much every other country. Anyway, if you watch American film from between the 1910s to the 1990s or watch American TV from the 1940s to the 1970s. You would think The US had no Black people at all and that the Black people who were there were all just thugs, maids, athletes, musicians and dancers. I don't get why people on this thread like to play dumb and not realize how fucked up that is. More diversity in the media is a threat to NOBODY.

R57 I believe Raven Symone should be a movie star right now. The View and the Disney reboot aren't enough. She should be getting comedic roles every year. This isn't her fault, she probably had a hard time being young during the early 00s when you had to be a white blond coke whore with an eating disorder to be considered beautiful.
